If you're anything like us, you've already enjoyed two wonderful years with your Nintendo Switch, and there's no end to the honeymoon phase in sight. Though you're probably sinking way too much time into trying to win a round of Tetris 99 right now, between Nintendo's first-party classics and the eShop's vast catalog of celebrated indie titles, there's always something new to play. This endless supply can take a toll on the finances, though, especially when the same game is often more expensive on the Switch than it is on PCs and other consoles. But there is a way to save a few bucks here and there by buying games at their cheapest, and making your money go further is simply a case of shopping around.

Starting today, players will be able to download Super Mario Galaxy 2, followed by Punch Out on January 22, then the Metroid Prime Trilogy on January 29. As announced in late October, digital pre-loading on Wii U will start with the home console version of Super Smash Bros. Nintendo recently elaborated on how the pre-loading service will work for the upcoming fighting game. Starting on Tuesday, November 18, Nintendo will send a download code to those that pre-ordered the game through its online store. Redeeming the code will allow players to download most of Super Smash Bros. to their Wii U systems right away. Starting at 12:00 a.m. ET on the day of its official launch, Friday, November 21, a small update will be available to download that unlocks the game. Alternatively, players will be able to complete the same process by purchasing Super Smash Bros. for Wii U from the system's eShop directly, or by obtaining a download code from another retailer. Pre-orders for Super Smash Bros. surpassed that of Mario Kart 8 according to Nintendo, which expects "the impact on hardware will be similarly dramatic" to that of Smash. [Image: Nintendo]

Given that it made its debut in 1984 on NES, Duck Hunt just celebrated its 30th anniversary. While Nintendo didn't reveal an exact date for its launch, the game will arrive "soon" on the eShop and will require a Wii Remote controller to play. [Image: Nintendo]

Sega announced plans to re-release five games from its catalog on 3DS in 2015, the publisher announced today. The next set of "3D Classics" from Sega will reach North America and Europe next year, starting with After Burner 2 in early 2015. Sega plans to issue one game every month from that point on, each priced at $5.99 (£4.49 / €4.99) on Nintendo's 3DS eShop. Though it did not list the order in which the games will appear on the eShop, the other four games getting the 3D relaunch treatment are Fantasy Zone, Fantasy Zone 2, OutRun and Thunder Blade. The first set of 3D Classics launched in late November 2013 and included games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Ecco the Dolphin and Shinobi 3. Games in the 3D Classic catalog such as Space Harrier feature additional game settings that allow players to optimize the difficulty, number of lives and other bonus functions, improving on the original games. The Wii U also gets Zen Studios' nifty action strategy game, CastleStorm. Nintendo is pulling its eShop services offline today starting at 4:00PM Eastern (1PM Pacific), the company announced on its Facebook page. The decision follows a rocky Japanese debut for Pokemon X and Y's Pokemon Bank service, which was part of the blame in crippling Nintendo's servers. The publisher postponed the launch of the Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter services in Europe and North America for the time being. The Wii U and 3DS eShops will resume activity at 4:00AM Eastern (1AM Pacific) tomorrow morning, at which point Nintendo expects to have rectified the connection issues users are having.

Sega continues doing what Nintendoes this week, releasing updated 3DS versions of two more of its classics, namely Streets of Rage and Shinobi 3. In addition to these reworked Genesis games, the 3DS Virtual Console library expands with the weird urban track and field game, Crash n' the Boys: Street Challenge. The Wii U picks up a re-released classic of its own with the NES version of Castlevania on Virtual Console. The Wii U also grabs the interesting – though perplexing – Knytt Underground. If all of that isn't enough to warm up your winter, there's a sale running on the bizarre, oddly engrossing game about burning things, Little Inferno. You can buy it – and subsequently toss it into the fireplace – for just five bucks.

Dear Santa, Seriously, guy, where is my The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on Wii U? It's out on the European eShop this week, but I'm not seeing any Best SNES Games of All Time in the North American releases. Why is that? Wasn't I a good boy this year, Santa? Don't I deserve the chance to revisit a classic Zelda on my new Nintendo system? Wouldn't I get such joy from playing it alongside its 3DS sequel, A Link Between Worlds? That's all I wanted this year, Santa. That's all I've ever wanted. Tell me, Santa: Do you want to watch the world burn? Is that who you are? I hate you. Sincerely, Tommy PS: I would also like a Super Soaker 5000.

  • 3DS update is live, adds support for Miiverse, combined eShop balances

3DS owners can finally doodle sweet nothings on Nintendo's Miiverse network, thanks to a system update that went live after maintenance yesterday. As detailed in last month's Nintendo Direct, the update also lets users tie a Nintendo Network ID to their 3DS systems, meaning they can register their handhelds under the same IDs used on their Wii Us. In turn, that means users can combine 3DS eShop balances with Wii U ones. Once the update's completed, you'll find the green Miiverse icon in the top toolbar of the 3DS menu. You won't be able to access Miiverse without a Nintendo Network ID, so you'll have to create one for the 3DS, or register an already created ID, such as one your Wii U is tied to. After that, it's Miiverse city: You'll be able to post, scribble, attach screenshots, and browse to your heart's content. One contentment your heart has to wait for is Friends functionality, which isn't available on 3DS Miiverse at the mo. We hoped to check out how the update affected the 3DS eShop, but at the time of writing we couldn't access it. According to last month's Direct, the update lets users purchase Wii U content on the 3DS eShop (but not play it on the 3DS!), and vice versa.

An assortment of Mario games at 30 percent off isn't a bad way to do Black Friday, but the eShop really gets into the mood with Shin Megami Tensei 4. The 3DS JRPG is just $30 until December 2, an top price for what we called "a great entry point" to the Atlus series. If we had you at "Mario games at 30 percent off," let's fill you in on the details. Both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 feature, while Super Mario Land 2 and Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move are also discounted on the 3DS eShop, and Super Mario World and the original Mario Bros. get price dips on the Wii U eShop. We'd say there's no better time to revisit SMB2 then after playing Super Mario 3D World - gotta love that floaty Peach. If you're done with discounts and just want the new stuff. we've got that, too - including the first batch of the long-time-coming Sega 3D Classics, and episodes 1-10 of Pokemon: BW Rival Destinies. Head past the break for the full rundown of newly-released games.

As eShop weeks go, this one's a bit spectacular. A new five-star Zelda? Check! A new five-star Mario? Check again! What's more, you'll be able to download them as soon as today becomes tomorrow, midnight sharp. Wait, you want more? You're genuinely not satisfied with Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, both games we awarded five stars to? Really? Not even if we chuck in a week-long sale that lasers 30 percent off Mega Man 1-4 on 3DS and Wii U? Surely you aren't that greedy? Fine.... fine. Fine. Be like that. Let's go through the whole list already.

Everyone may be all abuzz with PlayStation 4 madness (you're keeping up with our launch coverage, right?), but that doesn't mean the eShop is taking a week off. In fact, it's a very solid week for all the Nintendo downloaders out there. Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games debuts on both Wii U and 3DS today, and staring on November 19, both platforms also pick up Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW!. Today on Virtual Console, the 3DS gets the classic beat-em-up and pompadour simulator, River City Ransom. Elsewhere on Virtual Console, Nintendo is running a sale on Zelda games. The 3DS and Wii U versions of The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link have been knocked down to $3.49 each. Meanwhile, Link's Awakening DX, the old Game Boy Color essential, is discounted to $3.99. The sale runs from Nov. 14, 9 a.m. PT through Nov. 21, 8:59 a.m. PT. And, what's this? A WiiWare game? It is! For all you Wii obsessives, your collection won't be complete without Deer Drive Legends.

    11.07.2013

There's a little something for everyone on the Nintendo eShop this week. The Wii U picks up Wii Sports Club (the epitome of "for everyone"), the original Toki Tori and the Virtual Console release of Wario's Woods. The 3DS also takes a trip to Wario's Woods, and it gets the eShop version of Kid Icarus: Uprising (which probably doesn't include that handy stand, for obvious reasons). If you're feeling a little more creative, you could try KORG M01D, a fully-featured music synthesizer program that lets you share your songs with other 3DS owners. You can even save the MIDI to the SD card so you can transfer it to a computer. And it wouldn't be a new week on the eShop without a sale on an Atlus game or two. From 9 a.m. PT on November 11 through 9 a.m. November 18, both Etrian Odyssey 4 and Code of Princess will be $10 off.
