The Nintendo Video channel, accessible through the corresponding eShop app on 3DS, will introduce a handful of new shows this fall. Five shows in total are coming, including The Misadventures of Link, Pikmin Nature Documentaries, Bravest Warriors, Wildheart Riukiu and Bee and PuppyCat. The Misadventures of Link is a series of comedy shorts starring the tunic-wearing hero, promising to portray Link "in a new and hysterical light." The series will be based on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. Pikmin Nature Documentaries, a spoof on traditional nature shows, will highlight Captain Olimar's colorful pals as seen in their natural environment. Bravest Warriors, from Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward, is about four teenage heroes-for-hire who traipse across galaxies helping aliens in crisis. The four teenagers vanquish their enemies with emotional powers and will be featured in Bravest Warriors every Friday on Nintendo Video. Rounding out the quintet is Wildheart Riukiu, a new series of 3D shorts from the creator of popular Nintendo Video series Meat or Die, and Bee and PuppyCat - a two-part series following an unemployed woman who meets a mysterious creature resembling both a puppy and a cat. The new content will start trickling out tomorrow, on November 1, and release throughout 2014.

Shigeru Miyamoto is working on translating the Pikmin series into animated shorts. The Nintendo executive showed one episode of his new project to Polygon last week. Olimar appears to be blending Pikmin into a delicious smoothie during the episode, but is actually blending up non-sentient carrots."When Olimar first discovered the Pikmin he named them based on the PikPik brand carrots in his home world, so he clearly loves carrots," Miyamoto said. "I thought it would be fun to have a scenario where it seems like he is going to eat the Pikmin. So it's kind of dark, but he doesn't eat them."The project comes from Miyamoto's desire to "give more life to the Pikmin characters," and is structured like brief 4-panel comics. The original episode and the Pikmin-themed logo animation recently shown in Japan's Toho theaters were made by Nintendo with the help of an animation studio. The Pikmin shorts will be released "sometime before the release of Pikmin 3," Miyamoto said, putting it somewhere in the first half of 2013. According to him, they may appear on the 3DS video service, or Nintendo may sell the shorts on the eShop.

Netflix, Swapnote, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, Pokedex 3D, and Nintendo Video have each been downloaded over one million times in the US alone, Nintendo's Scott Moffitt just announced. What do these random apps have in common?*

Nintendo Video, the bizarrely unpredictable passive-delivery video service for 3DS, is getting an infusion of new music. If you've left SpotPass on, your system is likely already downloading music videos including Wale's "Sabotage" and B.o.B.'s "So Good."Future releases include The Shins' "The Rifle's Spiral," OKGo's "Skyscrapers," Skrillex's "Breakn' a Sweat," Death Cab for Cutie's "Underneath the Sycamore" and "Save World Get Girl" by chiptune/rock band I Fight Dragons. We were just wondering what bands did with the expensive music videos they were still producing in 2012 for some reason. The answer, it turns out is YouTube and Nintendo Video.

Nintendo made it really, really easy this week for us to notice the release of its original 3DS download game, Freakyforms. Unfortunately, it did this by releasing nothing else on eShop (save some Zelda music on Nintendo Video), and very little on DSiWare (a tower defense game about monkeys popping balloons, and a generic strategy title). Meanwhile, on WiiWare ... step aerobics. So yeah, Freakyforms! It looks really cute!%Gallery-139045%

Do you like the short clips available on Nintendo Video, but wish they wouldn't randomly disappear from your system when new ones come along? Starting today, Nintendo is offering a selection of previous Nintendo Video shows from DreamWorks, downloadable from the eShop for $2 each. It's sort of like buying an episode of your favorite TV show on iTunes, we suppose, if that episode was five minutes long and only viewable on a 3DS. Kind of weird, but at least it's an additional option. In other news, Double Dragon! The ... Game Boy version!%Gallery-137124%

After faking us out yesterday with a "coming soon" icon, Nintendo snuck its 3DS Nintendo Video service out late last night in North America. The initial video offerings include a "Nintendo Video Is" ad, a Captain America trailer, Dinosaur Office, and a short film called Sunday Jog. Next week, on July 27, a new OK Go video will be released and Nintendo will post the 3D version on the service -- it'll be the second OK Go clip to be released as a 3DS video. Other content teased by Nintendo includes "exclusive 3D videos from Jason DeRulo, Foster the People, CollegeHumor and the world-renowned Blue Man Group, plus extreme sports and action videos, animation from various independent studios and 3D trailers for upcoming Hollywood movies." Of course Nintendo will be removing old content when new content is released, so if you have any interest in seeing the initial offerings, check them out soon.

After some will they / won't they drama, Nintendo snuck out its new Video app for the 3DS, giving owners of the handheld a little something to enjoy in 3D between gaming sessions. That said, we hope your Netflix queue is full because there are apparently only four selections available at any given time. At launch, those slots are filled with an intro video, two short films (Sunday Jog and Dinosaur Office) and a Captain America movie trailer. Users should expect a continuously updated carousel of content going forward, but for now if you're not near your glasses-free 3D machine (or don't own one at all) check out these shots provided by one of our tipsters. Otherwise check for the app in the eShop; though with only a four-pack to start, we'd suggest pacing yourself instead of diving in all at once. Check out the PR after the break. • Nintendo Video's 3DS app plays coy, is / is not launching in the US today

Is Nintendo Video launching in the US, or is it just coming soon? Someone over at the house that Mario built needs to make up their mind -- Reggie knuckle sandwich, anyone? The application was quietly announced this morning via Nintendo Download, then listed as a non-downloadable item on the eShop and featured on the company's official site with a release dated today. So, where is it then? Your guess is as good as ours. When it finally hits your parallax display, expect this 3DS only app to update weekly with fresh content, promising limited-time only 2D and 3D comedy, action and adventure shorts. Head to the eShop right now, and you'll be treated to a music-backed, text-only tease of the service and a College Humour video, apparently. If a curated experience from the makers of the Wii U fits your bill, then go right ahead and set that Spotpass to download.

The Nintendo Video service will be available from the 3DS eShop this week. We're looking forward to seeing what kind of short videos Nintendo has chosen for our entertainment. Well, "looking forward" might be a bit strong. We're curious. Maybe we're also dreading it, a little. Meanwhile, there's a new 3D Classics remake to play on 3DS: Xevious, which is based on a game a damn sight better than Urban Champion. DSiWare also adds the gravity-flipping platformer, Antipole. Update: Actually, it wasn't Nintendo Video at all, but a new entry on the eShop's front page to tell us that Nintendo Video was "coming soon." We're still confused.

  • Nintendo Video arrives on Japanese 3DS tomorrow, American equivalent and Netflix 'later this summer'

It wouldn't be a Nintendo product if the JDM release didn't get special treatment, and that practice continues here for the 3DS. The Nintendo Video service hits the Japanese version of the parallax-busting handheld tomorrow, allowing the download of 2D and 3D content that's been "recommended" by the house Mario built. It's actually the second video service to hit Japanese systems, following SpotPass TV's earlier launch with original content. When will we Americans get something fulfilling? "Later this summer" according to a Nintendo statement, which also confirms Netflix will be available "soon" -- soon enough to save your subscription?

  • 3DS 'Nintendo Video' service available tomorrow in Japan [update]

Tomorrow, Nintendo of Japan will launch its 3DS "Nintendo Video" service, following the debut of that service in Europe. Confusingly, this is the second 3DS video service, with its own dedicated app, in Japan. There's also SpotPass TV, which started late last month. What's the difference? SpotPass TV is original content produced by Fuji TV and Nippon TV, all in 3D, and delivered daily; Nintendo Video, according to Andriasang, offers periodic releases of 2D and 3D content "recommended" by Nintendo. It's quite likely that two teams were working on two services, and Nintendo just released them both. Still, with the eShop finally merging the "shopping" and "ranking" functions for downloadable games, it's odd to see another offering split into two apps along arbitrary lines. As is the trend for Nintendo now, this service is coming to Japan and Europe well before any news of an American release. It could show up here with the eShop update this Thursday, with content specific to the North American region ... or never. Update: Nintendo of America told us that its own "short-form video service" will be available "later this summer," and took the opportunity to remind us that Netflix is still on the way to 3DS. The statement is after the break.
