In two paragraphs, Mat Smith sums up his experience with three generations of Nintendo DS handhelds, while Dan Cooper attempts to explain why he's still using a gadget he obviously hates. Nintendo's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NintendoDs/">twin-screen wonder</a> has seen almost as many reinventions as Lady Gaga, so it may not come as a huge shock to hear that the DS (in all its guises) has now sold over 50 million units in the US. The home entertainment maestros are still chasing similar success for its three-dimensional sibling, the 3DS, however. Nintendo has managed to sell almost half a million three dee units units after its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/09/nintendo-on-price-reduction-no-glasses-required-to-see-3ds-sale/">weighty price cut</a>, but there's now some very <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/apple-claims-50-percent-of-portable-gaming-market-ipod-touch-o/">potent competitors</a> seeking their own slice of the (portable) gaming pie. Good luck, Nintendo, you're probably going to need it.</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/15/nintendo-sells-over-50-million-ds-units-3ds-sales-fall-flat-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo sells over 50 million DS units, 3DS sales fall flat in comparison</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/15/nintendo-sells-over-50-million-ds-units-3ds-sales-fall-flat-in/">Nintendo sells over 50 million DS units, 3DS sales fall flat in comparison</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 15 Oct 2011 05:23:00 EST. We caught wind of an internal <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gamestop/">GameStop</a> memo this morning announcing the discontinuation of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSLite/">Nintendo's DS Lite</a>. The memo (pictured above) asks employees to remove displays of Crimson, Black, and Metallic Rose models, once they've burned through their stock -- we've since confirmed the fact with an employee of the gaming chain. Not a huge shocker, of course, given the fact that the five-year-old system has since been eclipsed by 2009's DSi and, more recently, the company's glasses-free 3D portable, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/19/nintendo-3ds-in-depth-preview-slight-return-video/">3DS</a>. We have reached out to Nintendo for comment on the matter and will update this post with official word once received.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: We heard back from Nintendo, receiving the usual "Nintendo doesn't comment on rumor and speculation."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/22/ds-lite-discontinued-at-gamestop/">DS Lite discontinued at GameStop</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 22 Apr 2011 09:06:00 EST. Nintendo is slashing the DSi to $149.99 and the DSi XL to $169.99 (that's down $20 apiece) on September 12 in North America, after dropping prices in the UK and Japan in June. We still don't know what the 3DS will be going for or when it will land, that announcement is still slated for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/nintendo-issues-a-3ds-release-date-date/">end of this month</a>, but we're sure at this price (or any) Nintendo will manage to sell a good many million of the current crop between now and then. PR is after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/30/nintendo-dropping-dsi-and-dsi-xl-prices-on-september-12/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo dropping DSi and DSI XL prices on September 12</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/30/nintendo-dropping-dsi-and-dsi-xl-prices-on-september-12/">Nintendo dropping DSi and DSI XL prices on September 12</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 10:19:00 EST. Although <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/06/nintendo-net-profit-declines-for-first-time-in-six-years-panic/">foreshadowed</a>, it's hard to believe that the once mighty Ninty, a company with unshakable profits even during last year's global economic downturn, just recorded a Q1 net loss of &yen;25.22 billion ($288 million) compared to a net profit of &yen;42.32 billion during the same 3-month period a year earlier. Revenues dropped from &yen;253.50 billion to &yen;188.65 billion. Lower DS portable gaming machine prices coupled with a strong Yen (86.5 percent of its sales were outside of Japan) helped pull Nintendo into the red. Regardless, Nintendo continues to forecast a full year net profit of &yen;200 billion on revenue of &yen;1.4 trillion. We'll see.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/nintendo-posts-q1-loss-on-strong-yen-and-lower-ds-prices/">Nintendo posts Q1 loss on strong Yen and lower DS prices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 04:43:00 EST. When it comes to video games that make you look <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/natal-river-rush-gameplay-glimpsed-first-wild-gesticulation-r/">absolutely ridiculous</a>, nothing beats Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kinect/">Kinect</a>, but Nintendo's got a substitute if you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/14/microsoft-kinect-for-xbox-360-launches-on-november-4/">just can't wait</a>. The aptly-named <em>Face Pilot</em><em>:</em> <em>Fly With Your Nintendo DSi Camera!</em> does exactly that, letting you literally direct a virtual hang glider with your face, by using the Nintendo DSi's camera to track your head in 2D space. Sure, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/eyetoy">Sony's EyeToy</a> did similar things earlier this decade and you could program Windows-based FreeTrack software to do the same, but neither provide the portable hilarity (or challenge) of <em>Face Pilo</em><em>t</em> played on commuter rail. The downloadable title will set you back 500 Nintendo Points ($5) at the DSiWare store; watch a quick video demo after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/26/nintendo-dsi-game-lets-your-face-do-the-flying-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo DSi game lets your face do the flying (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/26/nintendo-dsi-game-lets-your-face-do-the-flying-video/">Nintendo DSi game lets your face do the flying (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 21:15:00 EST. Good news for Nippon-based handheld lovers: from June 19, Nintendo will be selling the DSi at a new reduced price of &yen;15,000 ($165), accompanied by a more affordable <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/nintendo-dsi-xl-review/">DSi LL</a>, which lands at &yen;18,000 ($198). That will make the jumbo portable console cheaper than the regular-sized one costs today, while the whole effort seems clearly aimed at maintaining the market for Nintendo's classical wares after it blows all our minds with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/nintendo-announces-3ds-the-glasses-free-3d-successor-to-the-d/">3DS</a> debut at E3 in a couple of weeks. We look forward to it, we just wish this price cut would go global -- Europeans need love too, you know.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> We've also just learnt Nintendo is bringing out a trifecta of new color options for the Japanese LL: blue, yellow and green jumbo DSis will be available on June 19, right alongside the price trim. Come past the break to see the other two hues.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/nintendo-trims-dsi-and-dsi-ll-prices-in-japan-makes-no-promises/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo trims DSi and DSi LL prices in Japan, adds new color options for bigger console (updated)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/nintendo-trims-dsi-and-dsi-ll-prices-in-japan-makes-no-promises/">Nintendo trims DSi and DSi LL prices in Japan, adds new color options for bigger console (updated)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 03:46:00 EST. Nintendo's 2009 financial results have just been released and, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/29/nintendo-profits-sink-on-declining-console-sales-weak-game-sele/">shockingly enough</a>, the company hasn't been able to break its profit record yet again. In fact, annual net profit dipped -- for the first time in six tenths of a decade -- to $2.44 billion, a 12 percent drop from the previous fiscal year's $2.79 billion. Sales of the Wii were down 21 percent year-on-year, but Nintendo still managed to shift 20 million units globally, so it's not exactly all doom and gloom at Mario HQ. And while <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/25/project-natal-experience-to-premiere-at-e3-on-june-13th/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/playstation-move-bonus-round-move-party-hands-on-and-interview/">Sony</a> are working on their own motion-sensing offerings, Ninty is reloading the only way it knows how -- bringing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/05/nintendos-black-wii-console-arrives-early-at-best-buy/">the noir Wii</a> to fashion-conscious Americans, and an all-new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/3ds">3D portable console</a> for the rest of us. Anyone willing to bet against Nintendo's income sheet improving next year?<br />

As jaded as we are, we just can't bring ourselves to criticize this. Coming with a felt interior and elastic straps to keep your Ninty nice and minty, it also offers a zipped compartment for storing games and accessories, as well as "puppet functionality." That last bit means you can shove your hand inside it and use the little fella as part of your awesome ventriloquist act. Priced at $19.99, it's available now, but we've just got one oustanding question -- what <em>animal</em> is this supposed to be?<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/29/puppet-pouch-puts-fur-on-your-ds-dsi-smiles-on-peoples-faces/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Puppet Pouch puts fur on your DS / DSi, smiles on people's faces</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/29/puppet-pouch-puts-fur-on-your-ds-dsi-smiles-on-peoples-faces/">Puppet Pouch puts fur on your DS / DSi, smiles on people's faces</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 29 Apr 2010 09:03:00 EST. Since Nintendo first asserted sole domination over the handheld gaming market with the release of the paperback-sized <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/23/nintendos-game-boy-turns-20/">Game Boy</a> in 1989, the company has striven time and again to make its pocket systems smaller, meeting fantastic financial success along the way. Nintendo did it with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/02/game-boy-pocket-fitted-with-backlit-screen-one-mans-life-now-c/">Game Boy Pocket</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/17/video-gba-sp-gets-touchscreen-hack-turns-concept-into-reality/">Advance SP</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/05/19/game-boy-micro-vs-game-boy-advance-sp/">Micro</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/04/ds-lite-us-launch-june-11-for-129-99/">DS Lite</a> and again ever so slightly with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/02/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/">DSi</a> -- the last even at the expense of backwards compatibility and battery life. Now, for the first time in the company's history, it's made an existing platform <i>bigger</i>, with questionable reasons as to why. Does the Nintendo DSi XL squash its predecessors flat? Or is Nintendo compensating for something? Find out inside. <br />

Whoa, now this is a whopper coming (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/16/rumor-mill-says-nintendo-ds2-might-be-headed-for-e3-unveiling/">almost</a>) out of nowhere. Nintendo has just slipped out a press release in Japan informing the world that all-new 3D-capable portable hardware is coming, with a full unveiling set for E3 2010 this June. Tentatively titled the 3DS, this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/10/intel-shows-off-glasses-free-3d-demo-now-this-is-more-like-it/">glasses-free</a> 3D wonder is pitched as the successor to both the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nintendods">DS</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nintendodsi">DSi</a>, and will use a "compatible cart" that should ensure backwards compatibility with your vast library of favorites from the older consoles. Nintendo expects to launch the 3DS into retail "during the fiscal year ending March 2011."<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Unofficial reports from Japan suggest the 3DS will have a parallax barrier 3D LCD from Sharp, a vibration function, and a "3D control stick." Sure, it's been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/29/nintendo-dsi-ll-goes-large-in-japan-on-november-21/">available in Japan</a> for quite some time, but this is the first chance we've gotten to really sit down and play with Nintendo's "more communal" (as we overheard one PR rep describe it, given it's propensity for more eyes comfortably viewing the screens) portable gaming experience, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSiXL/">DSi XL</a>. So let's get the comparisons out of the way: obvious volumetric differences aside, the maximum brightness versus the DSi seems to be slightly higher, and the stylus is inexplicably a handful of millimeters longer -- not a big deal, but you'll definitely figure it out when trying to stuff it into an older model. We're not really a fan of the top lid being glossy again -- we rather like the matte DSi lid, and this one seems even more fingerprint-coveting than its DS Lite predecessor. So with all that said, is the extra screen size worth it? Admittedly we do appreciate the extra room, and it comes without a cost to the picture clarity. The inherent tradeoff, however, is a complete inability to stuff this in our pockets -- we had better luck with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Mini5/">Mini 5</a>, to be blunt. You'll be able to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/24/nintendos-oversized-dsi-xl-heading-to-the-us-on-march-28th-for/">decide for yourself</a> soon enough, but in the meantime, there's pictures below and video after the break! <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-hands-on/">Nintendo DSi XL hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-hands-on/#2740464"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/dsi-xl-hands-2010-02-2420-21-19-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-hands-on/#2740465"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/dsi-xl-hands-2010-02-2420-21-29-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-hands-on/#2740466"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/dsi-xl-hands-2010-02-2420-21-40-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-hands-on/#2740467"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/dsi-xl-hands-2010-02-2420-21-46-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-hands-on/#2740468"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/dsi-xl-hands-2010-02-2420-21-52-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/25/nintendo-dsi-xl-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo DSi XL hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/25/nintendo-dsi-xl-hands-on/">Nintendo DSi XL hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 25 Feb 2010 00:00:00 EST. The last we heard, Nintendo's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dsixl%7Cdsill">super-sized DSi XL</a> (or DSi LL if you're Japanese) would be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/29/nintendo-dsi-xl-coming-to-america-in-q1-2010/">hitting the Colonies </a>sometime in the first quarter of 2010. As of now we have no information contrary to that, but we do have news specifying when the European nobility will get theirs: March 5. That means UK gamers have less than two months to determine whether they are eligible for an upgrade from the slender DSi, and if you're not sure how to check, just measure the depth and breadth your pockets. If you have room in there for the new version, with its stereo 4.2-inch screens, you'd better make with that pre-order: Nintendo Japan sold more than 100,000 of the things in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/24/nintendo-dsi-ll-sells-103k-in-two-days-ripped-open-in-two-minut/">just two days</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/14/nintendo-dsi-xl-coming-to-europe-march-5-us-eventually/">Nintendo DSi XL coming to Europe March 5, US eventually</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 14 Jan 2010 08:26:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Meanwhile, in the Netherlands... Engine Software has developed a hitherto yet undisclosed method of motion sensitivity for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NintendoDSi/">Nintendo DSi</a> (which we're guessing utilizes the camera). That got your attention, right? Well, wait'll you get a load of this: the company has been kind enough to try the thing out on a game of Tilt -- on <em>video</em>. According to our friends at <em>Joystiq</em>, the company's currently working on a DSiWare title that incorporates the technique. See for yourself after the break.</div>

The newer, embiggened <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/21/nintendo-dsi-ll-set-loose-in-japan/">Nintendo DSi LL</a> (as it's known in Tokyo Town) has been available to the kids in Japan since the beginning of the week, and Enterbrain, Inc. is reporting that Nintendo has pushed 103,524 units in its first two days. To perspectivize things, the DSi was snatched up to the tune of about 170,000 units in the same time period, while the PSPgo sold around 28,000 units. To celebrate, the kids at <em>PC Watch</em> have ripped one of these bad boys -- and you'll never guess what they found! (OK, maybe you will.) Check out the link below for the hardcore details -- and don't say we didn't warn you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/24/nintendo-dsi-ll-sells-103k-in-two-days-ripped-open-in-two-minut/">Nintendo DSi LL sells 103k in two days, ripped open in two minutes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 10:04:00 EST. Feels nice when a company keeps its promises, doesn't it? Nintendo said it'd have the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/the-dsi-xl-gets-sized-up-then-joystiq-answers-your-nagging-ques/">newly bulked up DSi LL</a> out in Japan <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/29/nintendo-dsi-ll-goes-large-in-japan-on-november-21/">for November 21</a>, and shockingly enough that's exactly what's happened. Eager Japanese upgraders have today gotten their mitts on the 4.2-inch (both screens, of course) device, while similarly inclined European and American Nintendo lovers are once again left to envy from afar. Their helping of jumbo DSi, to be known as the XL, will be showing up some time in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/29/nintendo-dsi-xl-coming-to-america-in-q1-2010/">first quarter of 2010</a>, long after bragging rights and gift-giving holiday occasions have passed. We're not sure whether to consider it consolation or cruelty, but you'll find a gallery containing close-ups of the new machine at the read link. <br />

<div align="left">Majesco's just announced an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/augmentedreality/">augmented reality</a> game for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSi/">DSi</a>, <em>Ghostwire: Link to the Paranormal</em>. While the Ghostwire title had been previously unveiled, Majesco has apparently just signed on to publish it. The game makes use of the DSi's camera and microphone so the player can hunt for ghosts in their surrounding, actual environment. Once the ghosts are detected, the player will have to track down objects to bribe them into peacefulness. <em>Ghostwire</em> is expected sometime in 2010, but until then, we'll just keep walking with our own ghosts.</div>

The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NintendoDSi/">Nintendo DSi</a> in its current form is just about to round its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/31/nintendo-dsi-coming-stateside-by-summer-2009-tomorrow-in-japan/">first Japanese birthday</a> on November 1st, and if <em>Nikkei</em> has anything to say about it, the two-screener's all set for an oncoming growth spurt. According to a report from the publication, who has a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/27/newfangled-nintendo-ds-on-the-horizon/">good</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/25/video-distribution-coming-to-japan-wiis-early-2009-overseas-lat/">track record</a> on Nintendo reports thus far, a new DSi with 4-inch screens (versus 3.25 currently) is coming to the land of the rising sun sometime before this year's out. No other spec differences, the report claims this was in response to older gamers having trouble seeing the action. It'll replace the current model and retail for the same price, &yen;18,900 (US $205.50). If history tells us anything, we'll be waiting a lot longer for this new model to make it overseas.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>As noted by our <em>Engadget Japan </em>friends, the original <em>Nikkei</em> piece does mention a possible increase in resolution, to the effect of saying games and apps can display more info on screen, but it's very unclear if that was the intended message here or simply a confusion in terminology.<br />

Hey Europe, Nintendo has stopped neglecting you! After Japan had <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/25/nintendo-dsi-now-in-3-more-colors-you-cant-buy/">color options</a> before anyone else even had the DSi, the USA got in on the fun with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/01/black-wii-remote-bundle-coming-to-north-america-no-matching-con/">extra pink and white</a>, and Europe was left wearing the black and white dunce cap. That monochromatic dystopia is about to be vanquished on October 23, however, when Nintendo is set to offer the handsome red, blue and turquoise options you see above all over the good lands of the Old World. Facebook photo uploading will come preloaded, as well as the Flipnote Studio app for creating multimedia missives. You can see a couple more shots after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/22/nintendo-introduces-some-color-to-european-dsi-options/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo introduces some color to European DSi options</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/22/nintendo-introduces-some-color-to-european-dsi-options/">Nintendo introduces some color to European DSi options</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 10:50:00 EST. Have a habit of losing those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSi/">DSi</a> carts on the bus, in between the couch cushions or in other darker, more taboo locales? Fret not, as the carefree crew over at Blaze has your best interests in mind. Hailed as the first 3-in-1 game selector for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nintendo/">Nintendo</a>'s DSi, this mildly unsightly attachment simply plugs into your game port and then houses a trio of your favorite titles. Once you've got it mounted, just flip the switch to change the title, though we'd suggest powering your DSi down before doing so. It's available now to solve a problem you probably only <em>think</em> you have for &pound;14.99 ($24).<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/16/blaze-nintendo-dsi-game-selector-improves-cart-management-uglie/">Blaze Nintendo DSi game selector improves cart management, uglies up your handheld</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 16 Sep 2009 12:52:00 EST. Hey North America, jealous of your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/30/dsi-v1-4-firmware-happening-now-in-japan-bringing-facebook-conn/">Japanese</a> and European friends who've already got Facebook integration on their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSi/">DSis</a>? Fear not, Nintendo of America's announced that firmware 1.4 will be pushed out tonight after 8:00PM ET -- in other words, any time now. We still haven't gotten the update yet, but let us know if and when you've got better luck!<br />

Back at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/E32009/">E3 2009</a> it was announced that Nintendo would roll out the capability to upload photo to Facebook from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSi/">DSi</a>. Well, we're hearing from <em>Engadget Japanese</em> that that firmware updating is now occurring. It's a pretty minor update which includes the aforementioned ability to upload photos to Facebook, and brings a faster "image display speed" in the DSi's camera. We're sure there's some behind the scenes tweaking going on too, right? No word on when this update will hit elsewhere, but we'll keep our eyes on our DSi until it happens. You know, for work. Check out <em>Engadget Japanese'</em>s video of the upgraded features after the break. <br />

Oh sure, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSi/">DSi</a> was the definite hotness when it sprung onto the scene earlier this year, but if you're growing somewhat bored of the same old camera + touchscreen action, why not spruce things up with an all new exterior? The case you're looking at above does require the disassembly of your console, and thus, you can kiss your remaining warranty goodbye. Frankly, we view the sacrifice as thoroughly worth it, as XCM's Eye Candy shell is practically guaranteed to get more eyes, fingers and tongues on your machine. And really, who wouldn't want that?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2009/07/09/xcm-eye-candy-ninten.html">Boing Boing</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/translucent-xcm-eye-candy-case-encourages-licking-of-dsi/">Translucent XCM Eye Candy case encourages licking of DSi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 12:57:00 EST. <div align="left">Nintendo's talkative global president <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SatoruIwata/">Satoru Iwata </a>turned a few heads when he told CNBC that the company had another handheld gaming system completed and ready for production sometime in the past three years, but that it ultimately decided not to release it. Though he didn't give any details on the handheld, he did say that, "in the history of Nintendo <span id="WSODQ_COMPONENT_NTDOY_ID0EGF15839609">

Despite a statement back in April from prez Satoru Iwata that the company would <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/06/watch-out-n-gage-nintendos-right-on-your-tail/">make a phone</a> if it could avoid monthly subscription costs, it looks like Nintendo will not be getting into the cell biz any time soon. Reggie Fils-Aime, president and CFO of Nintendo of America just put the kibosh on all that with a statement to the <em>New York Times</em>, saying, "Telephony is not in our wheelhouse. It's not something I anticipate us getting into." So, you're telling us that telephony is not in your wheelhouse? Hmm... okay. Thanks for clearing that up! Looking for a new way to burn money on your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSi/">DSi</a>? How's about a few new charging solutions from the folks at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Thrustmaster/">Thrustmaster</a>? Today, both the T-Standee Charger and T-Strap Charger were introduced, with the former expected in mid-June for $12.99 and the latter checking in next month for a penny under $8. As the name implies the T-Standee is basically a charging kickstand / docking station, while the T-Strap builds a charging port right into the strap that can be connected to any powered USB socket for on-the-go recharging. Gnarly, right? Full release is after the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/thrustmaster-intros-t-standee-and-t-strap-chargers-for-nintendo-dsi/">Thrustmaster intros T-Standee and T-Strap chargers for Nintendo DSi</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/thrustmaster-intros-t-standee-and-t-strap-chargers-for-nintendo-dsi/#1528812"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/mini-packshot-tstandee_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/thrustmaster-intros-t-standee-and-t-strap-chargers-for-nintendo-dsi/#1528813"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/mini-t.standee_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/thrustmaster-intros-t-standee-and-t-strap-chargers-for-nintendo-dsi/#1528814"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/mini-tsc-pack-prod-w_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/thrustmaster-intros-t-standee-and-t-strap-chargers-for-nintendo-dsi/#1528815"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/mini-tstandee_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/thrustmaster-intros-t-standee-and-t-strap-chargers-for-nintendo-dsi/#1528816"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/mini-t-strap_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/01/thrustmaster-intros-t-standee-and-t-strap-chargers-for-nintendo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Thrustmaster intros T-Standee and T-Strap chargers for Nintendo DSi</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/01/thrustmaster-intros-t-standee-and-t-strap-chargers-for-nintendo/">Thrustmaster intros T-Standee and T-Strap chargers for Nintendo DSi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 01 May 2009 07:23:00 EST. <div align="left">We haven't been hearing a whole lot about the planned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/25/video-distribution-coming-to-japan-wiis-early-2009-overseas-lat/">video distribution service</a> for the Wii as of late, but looks like folks in Japan will soon be able to try it out first hand, as the service is set to launch in the country on May 1st. Dubbed the "Wii no Ma Channel," the service is rolling out with a little help from advertising firm Denstu, and includes both free and paid content, as well as some other various services and special offers from sponsors. Even more interesting, however, is word that a free DSi app will launch alongside the service, which will let you download video from the Wii to the DS, and even download coupons from advertisers, which can then be scanned directly from the screen. Head on past the break for a quick video overview -- which, of course, doesn't include any word of a launch 'round here.</div>

We already heard that the Big N managed to lighten its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSi/">DSi </a>inventory <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/09/600k-dsis-sold-opening-weekend-in-us-and-europe/">by 300,000</a> during the handheld's first full weekend in America, and apparently another 135,000 procrastinators swooped in to grab one as the week finished up. Potentially more amazing, however, is the overall impact of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nintendo/">Nintendo</a> in the month of March. Last month, Nintendo systems accounted for just south of 60 percent (58.4 percent, if you must know) of all video game hardware sold in America. And yeah, that's even despite a shocking <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/17/nintendo-shares-fall-after-surprising-drop-in-wii-demand/">17 percent drop</a> in Wii sales during the same 30 day window. Have we mentioned lately that things seem to be going quite well in the Mushroom Kingdom? 'Cause they definitely do.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/dsi-sold-435-000-in-first-week-in-us/">Joystiq</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/20/nintendo-moves-435-000-dsi-handhelds-during-first-week-in-us/">Nintendo moves 435,000 DSi handhelds during first week in US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 20 Apr 2009 07:47:00 EST. <div align="left">Nintendo may have been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/09/nintendo-president-squashes-talk-of-wii-price-cuts/">denying</a> any rumors of a Wii price cut earlier this month, but it looks like it could possibly be reconsidering its options if this latest sales trend keeps up. Apparently, sales in the U.S. for the month of March clocked in at around 601,000 consoles, or about a 17% drop from a year earlier. During the same period, however, Xbox 360 sales were reportedly up a healthy 26%, while PlayStation 3 sales dipped 15% -- although, in sheer numbers, both were still well behind the Wii. That unsurprisingly didn't make investors too happy, with Nintendo shares falling 6.6% on the Osaka Securities Exchange after the news broke, which accounted for it's biggest drop in more than two months. Also contributing to the sell-off was a 19% drop in Nintendo DS sales compared to the previous year, although the company seems to be betting pretty heavily that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dsi">DSi</a> will quickly turn those numbers around.<br /></div>

Sure, we saw the Nintendo DSi get its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/10/nintendos-dsi-gets-cracked-wide-open/">teardown treatment</a> back in November, but now that it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/05/nintendo-dsi-now-available-in-north-america/">available stateside</a>, <em>iFixit's </em>decided to go for round two and rip the portable completely apart, snapping pics at each painful step. Taking it a step further, we also get to see in finer detail some of the differences between the new hardware and its DS Lite predecessor, including the now smaller 840mAh battery that we hear's been contributing to some shorter play sessions. At long last, US and Canadian gamers can finally join their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/nintendo-dsi-on-sale-in-europe-dsi-shop-open-for-business/">European</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/31/nintendo-dsi-coming-stateside-by-summer-2009-tomorrow-in-japan/">Japanese</a> brethren in picking up Nintendo's latest portable, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/02/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/">DSi</a>. Price of entry is $170 and if you're interested in a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/25/nintendo-dsi-now-in-3-more-colors-you-cant-buy/">color more vibrant</a> than blue and black, you'll probably be waiting a while. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/02/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/">Nintendo's DSi</a>, the youngest of the dual screen triplets, is now available in Europe, priced at &pound;150 (US $222) in UK and &euro;170 elsewhere. As for everyone across the pond, we'll have to wait until Sunday for the official North America debut, but if you somehow managed to procure one early (hello there!), you can check out the DSi Shop, which has officially flung open its doors for eager buyers. Check out video of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/bloggers/joshua-topolsky">Josh</a> spending some quality time with the DSi Shop after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/nintendo-dsi-on-sale-in-europe-dsi-shop-open-for-business/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo DSi on sale in Europe, DSi Shop open for business (video)</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/nintendo-dsi-on-sale-in-europe-dsi-shop-open-for-business/">Nintendo DSi on sale in Europe, DSi Shop open for business (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 14:27:00 EST. Still on the fence about picking up a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NintendoDSi/">Nintendo DSi</a> this Sunday? Our BFFs at <em>Joystiq</em> have a rather exhaustive video hands-on with the portable, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/02/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/">pre-recorded cheers</a> and all. Witness firsthand the unboxing, the inevitable side-by-side comparison with the DS Lite, and a walkthrough of the new camera and sound recordings apps, all thanks to the power of moving pictures. Grab some popcorn and hit up the read link to have all your dual-screen questions answered, and then some.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/02/nintendo-dsis-us-debut-gets-sized-up-on-video/">Nintendo DSi gets sized up on video ahead of US debut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 02 Apr 2009 18:33:00 EST. Now this is a pleasant surprise. We expected to get our hands on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSi/">DSi</a>, just not today. Like the baby in a carriage of fictions-past, the little bundle of gadget joy arrived on our doorstep this morning. Regardless, Nintendo has outdone themselves on presentation this time around, seating the console in a large box that emits a sample of cheers and shines bright lights on you when you pop the lid. Seriously. Other than that, the DSi is about what we expected -- slimmer, sleeker, lighter... generally a lot more DS-y. We ran into a few issues off the bat, like the fact that it can connect to our network, but not to Nintendo servers (this is an issue addressed in the manual -- it makes no sense to us), and we found the menus to be slightly unwieldy to navigate through, but mostly we're as excited as school children on X-mas morning. Take a look at the vast gallery below to see what's what, and stay tuned for a more in-depth look at the DSi.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/">Nintendo DSi unboxing and hands-on!</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1467666"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/dsi_unbox20_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1467665"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/dsi_unbox19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1467662"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/dsi_unbox35_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1467640"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/dsi_unbox02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1467644"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/dsi_unbox21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/02/nintendo-dsi-unboxing-and-hands-on/">Nintendo DSi unboxing and hands-on!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 02 Apr 2009 10:19:00 EST. <div align="left">Man, the folks over at this year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GDC">Game Developer's Conference</a> are having all the fun -- and now the <span style="font-style: italic;">Joystiq</span> crew just got a rare look at two <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GameBoy/">Game Boy</a> models that never made it to production, unveiled during a talk by the project leader for the development of the DSi, Masato Kuwahara. The first, developed around 1995, was labeled "Game Boy Advance Predecessor," and was based on a 32-bit ARM RISC processor. The project stalled in development due to poor graphics performance. The second device was essentially a touch-screen Game Boy Advance SP, with a clamshell case thrown in for good measure. Apparently, this one didn't make the cut due to its lack of a backlit display. We've got a picture of that one for you too -- and it does look somewhat familiar. Check it after the break.</div>

<div align="left">Good news for all you crazy kids <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/nintendo-dsi-now-up-for-amazon-and-gamestop-preorder/">waiting in eager anticipation</a> for the Nintendo DSi's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/nintendo-dsi-to-launch-on-april-5th/">Stateside release</a>. According to very scientistic benchmarks conducted by the folks over at <em>N+</em>, the up-and-coming handheld's Opera browser not only loads the <em>New York Times</em> website much faster than the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dslite">DS Lite</a> does, but it's clever enough to start with the text -- giving you something to read while you wait for pictures of the war torn Gaza Strip to materialize (and bum you out on an otherwise beautiful Monday afternoon). Unlike the DS Lite, Opera for the DSi is free, and it can be saved directly to the device's internal memory. No fuss, no muss -- right? But don't take our word for it, we've been kind enough to provide a video for your after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/ds-browser-vs-dsi-browser/">Joystiq</a>]</div>

Those of you feeling the need to tell someone your credit number before the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/nintendo-dsi-to-launch-on-april-5th/">Nintendo DSi's April 5th US street date</a> take heart: Amazon and GameStop are now both accepting preorders. You're looking at $169 for the base system from either retailer, but GameStop will happily jack the price with some bundled accessories if you're feeling generous. Anyone gonna throw down?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/02/18/dsi-preorders-available-at-amazon-and-gamestop/">Joystiq</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TADAC0?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B001TADAC0">Read</a> - Amazon<br /><a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=020307&amp;affID=77777&amp;sourceID=aOUs5qjvzDc-EJxFpBeD3aZGwB4x45xh3w">Read</a> - GameStop (black)<br /><a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=020308&amp;affID=77777&amp;sourceID=aOUs5qjvzDc-a453VGmeGDgfTerDxmgMVg">Read</a> - GameStop (blue)<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/nintendo-dsi-now-up-for-amazon-and-gamestop-preorder/">Nintendo DSi now up for Amazon and GameStop preorder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 12:43:00 EST. If you're still feeling all giddy about getting your mitts on a DSi here in the States <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/nintendo-dsi-to-launch-on-april-5th/">on April 5th</a>, prepare for a bit of a downer. Nintendo Europe has just announced gamers within its territories be getting the multi-screen multi-cam wonder a full two days earlier, on April 3rd, but hasn't said how much they'll be paying for the privilege. Also, while we're stuck with black and a rather cheeky baby blue, Euro gamers will be getting the more stolid/boring color selection of black or white, which may be good or bad depending on your monochromatic tendencies. Regardless, whether you're domestic or abroad, you'd best get your pre-orders in now.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> LostProphet commented to say that it's showing up for pre-order abroad at &pound;149.99, or about $214. That's quite a premium for a few days worth of exclusivity. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=hp&amp;hl=en&amp;u=http://www.nowhereelse.fr/sortie-nintendo-dsi-europe-16399/&amp;sl=fr&amp;tl=en">Nowhere Else</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/nintendos-dsi-planning-a-european-tour-ahead-of-us-release/">Nintendo's DSi planning a European tour ahead of US release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 07:13:00 EST. <div align="left">It was bound to happen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/31/nintendo-dsi-coming-stateside-by-summer-2009-tomorrow-in-japan/">sooner or later</a>. We've seen it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/04/dsi-already-hacked-greets-us-with-a-lusty-hello-world/">hacked</a> and seen it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/10/nintendos-dsi-gets-cracked-wide-open/">cracked open</a>, and now it looks like the Nintendo DSi might finally get that Stateside release. According to IGN, the device will be hitting the shelves here in early April for $179.99. If this is for real, for real -- as the site is quick to point out, Nintendo "doesn't comment on rumors and speculation," so there's been no official confirmation -- it looks like it's only a matter of time before the fun lovin' game console finds its way into our hands. Because it's already found its way into our hearts.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/13/rumor-nintendo-dsi-coming-to-us-on-april-4-at-179/">Joystiq</a>]</div>
