This past week, we've seen T-Mobile expand its network coverage <em>and</em> take an argument to the FCC regarding interoperability requirements of the 700MHz band. These stories and more await after the break. So buy the ticket and take the ride as we explore the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/mm">best of the rest</a>" for this week of March 12th, 2012.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/17/mobile-miscellany-week-of-march-12th-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mobile Miscellany: week of March 12th, 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/17/mobile-miscellany-week-of-march-12th-2012/">Mobile Miscellany: week of March 12th, 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 17 Mar 2012 19:06:00 EST. Micro-ia? The madness continues! Nokia front-man <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Stephen+Elop">Stephen Elop</a> let it be known that his company's moniker will be making its way to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Bing+Maps">Bing Maps</a> in the near future, and he's not just talking about on the desktop. During a CES interview with <em>Pocket-lint</em>, Elop explained that any "property" utilizing Microsoft's Bing Maps service -- including mobile platforms -- will be co-branded with the Nokia logo. "<span class="blueLinks">We are clearly placing a bet on the Windows Phone platform; t</span><span class="blueLinks">hey [Microsoft] are placing a bet on our location-based platform</span>," he said. The CEO cited BlackBerry as a non-Windows Phone device that will see the Nokia tattoo in its Maps app -- RIM <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/03/blackberry-to-integrate-bing-services-at-the-os-level/">recently announced</a> its intention to integrate Bing Maps at the OS level. No word on when Microsoft branding will make its way onto Nokia software... <em>oh</em>, wait a minute...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/19/microsoft-adding-nokia-branding-to-bing-maps/">Microsoft adding Nokia branding to Bing Maps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 15:09:00 EST. Well, one gift at least: the free-of-charge Car Mode app, which helps to transform your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/symbianbelle">Symbian Belle</a> smartphone into a turn-by-turn sat nav, with all the power of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nokia%20drive/">Drive</a>, traffic updates, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/09/nokia-music-breaks-free-from-lumias-chains-brings-windows-phon/">Music</a> and voice calling presented in a more dash-friendly manner. (Did we just say 'Symbian'? <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/23/nokia-responds-to-questions-over-symbian-name-swap/">We didn't mean to.</a>) The other offering is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/10/nokia-announces-car-mode-with-mirrorlink-support-for-symbian-bel/">Car Mode with MirrorLink</a>, priced at &pound;17.99 (roughly $28), which we took for a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/27/nokia-drive-with-mirrorlink-on-toyota-touch-life-hands-on-video/">bump-free ride</a> back at Nokia World, and which repeats the smartphone's screen on compatible systems such as Toyota's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/toyota-introduces-touch-life-smartphone-mirroring-system-your-p/">Touch Life</a>. Head to the source link to claim your prize.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/04/nokia-car-mode-for-symbian-belle-now-ready-for-download/">Nokia Car Mode for Symbian Belle now ready for download</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 08:34:00 EST. There seems to be a bit of confusion about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/nokia-announces-drive-mix-radio-cloud-services/">Nokia Drive's</a> future in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/windowsphonemarketplace">Windows Phone Marketplace</a>. News of its impending arrival -- for a price -- was originally tweeted by a third-party and then <em>re-tweeted</em> by Nokia India. Sadly, we're told this was all just a mistake. We originally reached out to Espoo's finest to confirm the story, and well, we met a giant brick wall in the process. According to the company's media relations department, "Nokia Drive comes pre-installed on our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nokialumia">Nokia Lumia</a> range and there are currently no plans to make it available for Windows Phone based devices from other OEMs." It's a heartbreaker, indeed, but the crew at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/garmin-demos-upcoming-mobilenavigator-for-ios-and-android-lates/">Navigon</a> can certainly breathe a sigh of relief -- for the time being.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/25/psa-nokia-reiterates-drive-isnt-coming-to-windows-phone-market/">PSA: Nokia reiterates Drive isn't coming to Windows Phone Marketplace</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 25 Nov 2011 23:14:00 EST. When Espoo trotted out its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/nokia-announces-the-lumia-800/">"first real Windows Phone,"</a> it did so with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/nokia-announces-drive-mix-radio-cloud-services/">bevy of exclusive features</a>, one of which brought baked-in offline navigation. Since the announcement of that proud product launch, Nokia Drive's been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/05/nokia-drive-hacked-takes-trip-abroad-to-rival-windows-phones/">wrestled free from its polycarbonate chains</a>, but the perks of being a Lumia owner are still incoming. Confirmed to Dutch site <em>All About Phones</em>, the Finnish company's Mango phone in an N9 shell is due for an update that'll bring full offline use of the app, ensuring those re-routed calculations don't hinge upon a network connection. Sure, any geek with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/02/nokia-maps-to-be-available-for-all-windows-phone-handsets-sans/">WP7 handset's set to get Maps</a> sometime soon, but rest assured you and your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/the-engadget-interview-peter-skillman-talks-design/">sinuously tapered</a> device are still the sole beneficiaries of Nokia's robo-toned, front seat copilot.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/22/lumia-line-to-get-nokia-drive-update-fully-cuts-the-network-cor/">Lumia line to get Nokia Drive update, fully cuts the network cord</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 02:08:00 EST. <p>
	While we knew that Nokia Maps would be arriving on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/02/nokia-maps-to-be-available-for-all-windows-phone-handsets-sans/">full range</a> of Windows Phone devices, Nokia indicated that its Drive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/27/nokia-drive-with-mirrorlink-on-toyota-touch-life-hands-on-video">voice navigation feature</a> would stay an Espoo hardware exclusive. Alas, it seems that enthusiastic WinPho meddlers had other ideas, already managing to transplant the Lumia series' voice navigation functionality to Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/20/samsung-omnia-7-review/">Omnia 7</a> -- and presumably any other handsets they'd like. Just because you don't have a new Lumia handset doesn't mean you won't be able to use <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NokiaMaps/">Nokia Maps</a> -- or most of it, anyway. According to <em>ZDNet</em>, Windows Phone users should expect to see Nokia Maps pop up as a free app on the Windows Phone Marketplace "within the next couple of weeks," though offline voice navigation feature will remain restricted to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/nokias-lumia-710-windows-phone-announced-alongside-the-800/">Lumia 710</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/nokia-announces-the-lumia-800/">800</a>, in the form of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/27/nokia-drive-with-mirrorlink-on-toyota-touch-life-hands-on-video/">Nokia Drive</a>. No word yet on when the app will officially hit the market, but we'll definitely keep a close eye on it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/02/nokia-maps-to-be-available-for-all-windows-phone-handsets-sans/">Nokia Maps to be available for all Windows Phone handsets, sans voice navigation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 07:35:00 EST. Fancy some turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, cloud based music or sports highlights on your brand new Nokia smartphone? You don't need an app for that: the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/nokia-announces-the-lumia-800/">Lumia 800</a> is now the only Windows Phone with full navigation built-in. Nokia announced its Drive navigation, which has a look and feel that should be comfortable with users of its former Ovi Maps suite. It also looks to have similar functionality, enabling the download of maps so that you can find your way into offline areas (see gallery, below).<br />
<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-drive-music-sport/">Nokia Drive, Music, Sport</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-drive-music-sport/#4558180"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/201110265627-1319623041_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-drive-music-sport/#4558181"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/201110265630-1319623042_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-drive-music-sport/#4558182"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/nokiaworld0098-1319623042_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-drive-music-sport/#4558183"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/nokiaworld0099-1319623043_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-drive-music-sport/#4558184"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/nokiaworld0100-1319623043_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />
There's also exclusive Music and ESPN Sports Hub apps. The former features Mix Radio, a service that streams "locally relevant music" across hundreds of channels. The latter, meanwhile, allows sports fans to check up on stats, scores and news, and to pin their favorite teams or leagues to the start screen. All told, the company is promising a "uniquely Nokia" experience -- guess their slick hardware won't be the only way they break out of the WP7 pack. Check out a video demo of the navigation embedded after the break.<br />

	<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NokiaMaps/">Nokia Maps</a> is still getting development love, despite the Finnish manufacturer pinning its smartphone hopes and dreams on Windows Phone. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/html+5">HTML5</a>-powered maps are now willing to play ball with iOS and Android devices. Previously one of Nokia's strongest built-in functions on its own phones, the maps perform well on rival hardware -- although pinch-to-zoom isn't working on our Google devices. With Microsoft's Windows Phones touting some impressive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/windows-phone-adds-multitasking-deep-phone-integration-and-sen/">HTML5 credentials</a>, it wouldn't shock us to see something very similar running on Nokia's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/19/nokia-800-press-shots-leak-espoos-windows-phone-mango-lovechil/">incoming WinPho</a>. There's a smattering of online settings, including transport directions, but the best part is a new offline mode that will download neighborhood maps from your WiFi connection. Navigate your phone browser to the source link below to see how it works.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/25/nokia-maps-officially-arrives-on-ios-and-android-touts-offline/">Nokia Maps officially arrives on iOS and Android, touts offline storage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 11:11:00 EST. Still searching for today's internet time sink? Then look no further than Nokia's just launched beta version of Ovi Maps 3D. Thanks to some software wizardry and mysterious mapping know-how, it's now able to display cities in a new 3D view that you're able to zoom in and around to your heart's content. You can also do the same thing in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/googleearth">Google Earth's</a> 3D view, of course, but Nokia just might have a leg up in some respects. Unfortunately, it's still staying mum on exactly how it all works, but you can dive right in and start exploring for yourself at the link below.<br />

Yo <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/27/tomtom-go-1000-live-to-offer-capacitive-touchscreen-webkit-brow/">TomTom</a>, wake up and smell the competition. While the original gangster of navigation devices is still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/29/tomtom-reveals-plans-for-app-store-in-battle-against-smartphone/">mulling over</a> an app store, Nokia has raised the smartphone pathfinding bar a little higher by letting people record (and share) their own voice instructions. It's not the most complex process in the world, you just get the extra Own Voice app to go with the latest version of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ovi+maps">Ovi Maps</a> and set your vocal talents free. At the end you'll get a neat little voice pack to utilize on your handset or to share with the world, which is surely just dying to hear your Mr. T impressions. Let the silliness commence!<br />

Nokia's new Ovi Maps software just made its way to the venerable <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2008/06/19/nokia-e71-review/">E71</a> and <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/2008/06/30/nokia-e66-mini-review/">E66</a> business handsets. While Nokia was constrained from offering its premium nav services like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/21/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globa/">Guide Michelin and Lonely Planet</a> on these legacy S60 3.1 handsets, owners are nevertheless being treated to free walk and drive navigation with turn-by-turn guidance. So really, you can't complain... unless of course you picked up a US-flavored <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/e71x">E71x</a> which isn't eligible for the free update. <div style="text-align: left;">Nokia may still not have brought turn-by-turn navigation to Maemo with its own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ovimaps">Ovi Maps</a>, but N900 users can now get their fix courtesy of Sygic, which has just released a version of its Mobile Maps app for the device. Available only in Europe to start with, the app costs &euro;60, and includes maps of both eastern and western Europe, along with the usual "millions" of points-of-interest, speed camera locations and speed limit warnings, and plenty of customization options (including support for multiple languages). No firm word on availability outside of Europe just yet, but Sygic does say that additional regions will be announced "gradually." Head on past the break for a quick demo video.<br />

Those lovely people over at Nokia have furnished us with a few images of what their dashboard integration will look like, as well as the names of a few more partners for the Terminal Mode initiative. Intended to smarten up your car's hardware with the phone's capabilities -- whether that be to play back music, use Ovi Maps, browse the web, or whatever else -- this was announced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/03/nokia-and-alpine-integrating-handsets-into-cars-bringing-ovi-ma/">in partnership with Alpine yesterday</a>, but today we're hearing that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/10/blueandme-equipped-fiat-500-to-hit-europe-this-year/">Fiat</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/harmanbecker">Harman Becker</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/16/valmet-automotive-announces-plans-to-build-fisker-karma-plug-in/">Valmet Automotive</a> are also getting in on the fun. The gallery below shows off a mockup from Valmet, which plops your Nokia into a cradle just under the Eva concept's "on" button, and then transfers all the important stuff onto an LCD integrated into the dashboard above. Nokia tells us that each OEM will have their own particular design, so this might not be how they'll all look, but as far as ease of use goes, we don't know how you can improve much on what's being shown already. Let's just hope the software is as effective as the presentation is handsome.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-terminal-mode/">Nokia Terminal Mode</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-terminal-mode/#2768387"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/4mar10nokab835rf_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-terminal-mode/#2768388"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/4mar10nokia08235vde_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-terminal-mode/#2768389"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/4mar10nokia94333vde-1267704801_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-terminal-mode/#2768531"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/4mar10ou234btogr_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/04/nokias-terminal-mode-spotted-in-the-wilds-of-the-geneva-motor-s/">Nokia's Terminal Mode spotted in the wilds of the Geneva Motor Show</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Mar 2010 07:31:00 EST. What's the one biggest hurdle to throwing out your dedicated GPS nav unit and going ahead with the free turn-by-turn navigation <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/25/smartphone-gps-shootout-google-ovi-and-verizon/">offered by your smartphone</a>? If your answer was that most phones don't have the great big screens or easy installation systems of some satnav devices, look out, because Nokia's about to shake up your world all over again. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/alpine">Alpine</a> has just announced its partnership with the Finnish giant aimed at integrating Nokia handsets -- complete with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/21/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globa/">free Ovi Maps navigation</a> -- into car dashboard systems. Yes, that means you can use your superb six-amp speaker system to boom out music or voice nav instructions from the phone, as well as your in-dash 7-inch LCD for showing you the right way home. There's further interaction with widgets keeping an eye on your fuel levels and engine condition, leading to location-based services such as the phone notifying you of the nearest and cheapest petrol station. Connectivity is done over either USB or Bluetooth, and Nokia promises that this Terminal Mode will be showing up in its phones in the very near future. The sooner the better, we say.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/03/nokia-and-alpine-integrating-handsets-into-cars-bringing-ovi-ma/">Nokia and Alpine integrating handsets into cars, bringing Ovi Maps to your dashboard</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Mar 2010 06:40:00 EST. <img width="230" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="339" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/hang-in-there-kitty.jpg" alt="" />As everyone knows, Garmin and TomTom have their backs against the ropes in a fight to remain relevant in an age of free GPS turn-by-turn navigation on smartphones (thanks <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/google%20navigation">Google</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/03/ovi-maps-downloaded-1-4-million-times-in-first-week-since-going/">Nokia</a>). While dedicated personal navigators are almost always superior to their converged competition, the gap has certainly narrowed such that it's become difficult to justify another device when an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/23/gartner-apple-android-and-rim-winners-in-2009-smartphone-os-g/">increasing number of people</a> already carry a fine navigation device in their pockets. But that's just gut instinct talking, where's the hard evidence? Certainly not <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/28/the-game-has-changed/">speculative stock prices</a>. A good place to start is in forward-looking financial statements like the one Garmin, the leading navigation device maker in the US, just issued. Gamin says that it expects competition to cause prices to decline by about 10% in the personal navigation device (PND) industry putting pressure on margins, and thus profits, in 2010. It also sees flat or slightly declining revenue over the same period. Fortunately for Garmin, it has a diversified product offering that includes the Nuvifone. However, Garmin admits to being disappointed by sales of the handset that "won" our Editor's Choice award for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/22/the-winners-of-the-2009-engadget-awards#editors">Worst Gadget of the Year</a>. <br />
<br />
Things aren't all doom and gloom, though. Garmin has a pair of Nuvifones in the chute including the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/11/garmin-asus-nuvifone-a50-runs-android-knows-where-you-are/">Android-powered A50</a>. And its Q4 results of $1.43 per share easily beat analyst expectations of 95 cents a share. Even TomTom surprised many last week with a 1% increase in Q4 revenue and net profit of &euro;75 million compared to a &euro;989 million loss a year ago. So there's some hope left for the dedicated PND market... but not much.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gps/" rel="tag">GPS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/25/garmin-and-tomtom-cling-to-profits-hope/">Garmin and TomTom cling to profits, hope</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 25 Feb 2010 02:44:00 EST. People sure do like getting something for nothing. Since Nokia made the big move to stop charging for its walk and drive navigation last week, 1.4 million of us have downloaded the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/21/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globa/">Ovi Maps software</a> -- on average, that's a download a second since launch. The response has been so good that it's exceeded Nokia's expectations according to Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia Executive Vice President, with China, Italy, UK, Germany and Spain representing the top 5 downloaders. Hardly a surprise to see consumers responding so favorably to a free offering that makes a device you already have (your smartphone) that much smarter even if it does make your dedicated satnav <strike>somewhat</strike> mostly redundant. Now that we've heard the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/21/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globa/">big news</a> from Nokia's London press event, it's only natural to get our hands dirty with the upgraded <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ovi">Ovi</a> Maps. The preloaded map does indeed load much quicker than its old network counterpart, and hey, did we mention it's free too? Enjoy the photos and video after the break with your breakfast.<br />

Man, you thought Garmin and TomTom <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/28/the-game-has-changed/">were in trouble</a> when Google announced its free Navigation service... wait until investors hear Nokia's news. <em>Reuters</em> is reporting that Nokia will offer free navigation on its smartphones. However, instead of just the US (the current Google limitation sans hacking), Nokia will be demonstrating its reach by offering free turn-by-turn directions in 74 countries and 46 languages -- a move that should cover 20 million smartphones globally with Ovi Maps available in over 180 countries. Damn. <br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: The original <em>San Francisco Chronicle</em> report has been pulled but <a href="http://news.google.co.uk/news?hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&amp;hs=tKD&amp;q=san%20francisco%20chronicle%20nokia%20maps&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;sa=N&amp;tab=wn">Google cache caught a bit more</a> saying that Nokia's navigation service is "capable of operating completely offline" unlike Google Navigation which requires data connectivity.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2</strong>: Nokia just made the <a href="http://www.nokia.com/maps">download link live</a>. Hey, where's the N97 and N900 love?<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 3:</strong> And it's official. Starting today, Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation is free across the globe. Drivers receive turn-by-turn voice guidance including lane assistance, traffic information (in 10 countries including the US), and safety camera and speed warnings while pedestrians will be guided on shortcuts through parks and pedestrian-only zones in over 100 cities across the globe. It all works offline too, which should extend battery life and keep that navigation humming even while puttering about in data dead zones without racking up international roaming charges (take <em>that</em>, Google). From March 2010, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will come installed with the new Ovi Maps application and pre-loaded with local country map data and walk and drive navigation with access to location-aware Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost. Additional premium guides like a weather service and events / movies are also included. Just 10 devices from Nokia's massive catalog are available today -- a list that includes the N97 Mini, 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 navigation edition, E52, E55, E72, 5230, 6710 navigator, 6730 classic and X6. <br />
<br />
So what's missing? The N97 and N900 of course. Find out why after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globally/">Nokia offering free turn-by-turn navigation on smartphones globally</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globally/#2638523"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/ovimapsplayerapimapviewlowres_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globally/#2638524"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/apmashup1lowres_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globally/#2638525"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/mapsplayersanfranciscolowres_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globally/#2638526"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/safety02lowres_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nokia-offering-free-turn-by-turn-navigation-on-smartphones-globally/#2638527"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/trafficinfo3lowres_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />

Unless you're talking about a carrier-branded solution like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VZNavigator/">VZ Navigator</a>, turn-by-turn nav is still a pretty rare offering on featurephones -- let alone low-end ones -- which makes Nokia's new 2710 Navigation Edition an interesting announcement. Billed as Espoo's "most affordable navigation device ever," the simple candybar features a digital compass, 2.2-inch display, 2 megapixel cam, FM radio, and the all-important 3.5mm headphone jack for those times when you're not blaring voice guidance over the loudspeaker. The company says we can expect to see this one launch both in developing and developed markets, one of the first times we've seen a nav-centric device cross over like that -- and at &euro;110 ($163) unsubsidized, we can see the appeal. Look for it to ship in the second quarter of next year. Follow the break for Nokia's promo video.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/07/nokia-2710-navigation-edition-navigates-stays-cheap/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition navigates, stays cheap</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/07/nokia-2710-navigation-edition-navigates-stays-cheap/">Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition navigates, stays cheap</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 07 Dec 2009 12:41:00 EST. The Garmin-Asus <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nuvifone">nuvifone</a> is finally <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/20/both-flavors-of-garmin-asus-nuvifone-coming-to-atandt/">inbound</a> to domestic retailers, but it's taken so many wrong turns on the way that it's given the competition plenty of time to catch up and prepare their own nav-enabled mobile offerings. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/06/tomtoms-iphone-car-kit-and-navigation-software-priced-overseas/">TomTom's iPhone kit</a> is due any minute, and now Nokia is getting into the game, announcing the 5800 Navigation Edition. Instead of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/13/orange-bringing-comes-with-music-equipped-nokia-5800-xpressmusic/">coming with music</a> it comes with a pre-loaded copy of Ovi Maps and lifetime licenses for voice-guided driving and walking directions. It also includes a car charger and a handy-dandy auto mounting kit, all swingingly demonstrated in a video below, and is set to ship sometime in the third quarter of this year (i.e. soon) at an expected retail of &euro;285 (about $410).<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/21/nokias-5800-navigation-edition-finding-its-way-to-stores-soon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nokia's 5800 Navigation Edition announced, finding its way to stores soon</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/21/nokias-5800-navigation-edition-finding-its-way-to-stores-soon/">Nokia's 5800 Navigation Edition announced, finding its way to stores soon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 07:02:00 EST. After a pleasingly brief <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/02/11/nokia-goes-public-with-maps-2-0-beta-plans-series-40-version/">public beta</a>, Nokia's glazing its Maps 2.0 navigation app with a thick coating of gold and sending it off into a waiting world of S60-toting fiends to fend for itself. No question about it, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/the-nokia-n78-in-european-and-north-american-flavors/">N78</a> and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/the-nokia-n96-redefines-high-end/">N96</a> are the heavies in Nokia's Mobile World Congress announcements, but there are a couple gems on the lower end, too -- if you can really call a navigation-ready handset and a 5 megapixel smartphone "lower end." Taking advantage of the company's newly-introduced Maps 2.0 app, the 6210 Navigator succeeds the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/02/12/nokias-6110-quad-band-hsdpa-gps-navigator/">6110</a> by adding pedestrian navigation and an accelerometer to make it more responsive than AGPS alone. The 6220 classic, meanwhile, is an S60 candybar that slots in beneath the Nseries lineup, but still manages to clean up in the photography department with a Carl Zeiss lens, 5 megapixel sensor, and xenon flash. Check out the full rundown of the announcements over on Engadget Mobile!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/02/11/the-nokia-6210-navigator/">Read</a> - Nokia 6210 Navigator<br /><a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/02/11/the-nokia-6220-classic/">Read</a> - Nokia 6220 classic<br /><a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/02/11/nokia-goes-public-with-maps-2-0-beta-plans-series-40-version/">Read</a> - Nokia Maps 2.0<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/transportation/" rel="tag">Transportation</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/nokias-6210-navigator-6220-classic-and-maps-2-0/">Nokia's 6210 Navigator, 6220 classic, and Maps 2.0</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 04:15:00 EST. Previously available <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/09/nokia-maps-2-0-in-beta/">only to a select group</a>, Nokia is turning the beta version of its Maps 2.0 navigation app onto the masses. In addition to the car mode existing users will be familiar with, 2.0 adds "Walk," a new mode tailored to pedestrian use. Another new feature is the ability to purchase "multimedia guides" for destinations that hook you up with photo, video, and audio streams that detail places to go and things to see on your magical journey. As we'd previously mentioned, 2.0 also adds real-time traffic information and hybrid satellite views, both features that help to bring Maps in line with Google Maps for Mobile. The beta is available immediately, while a final cut is expected to be available in the second quarter of the year.<br /><br />Separately, Nokia has announced that it'll be bringing its Maps franchise to Series 40, swinging open the door to high-function navigation on the company's mass-market, non-smartphone handsets. It'll be ready in the first half of 2008, though no plans have yet been outed regarding availability on specific Series 40 devices.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/nokia-goes-public-with-maps-2-0-beta-plans-series-40-version/">Nokia goes public with Maps 2.0 beta, plans Series 40 version</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 04:15:00 EST. The Nokia Navigator is back, and this time around, it's got enough 3G to satisfy pretty much everyone. Succeeding the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/nokias-6110-quad-band-hsdpa-gps-navigator/">6110</a>, the 6210 Navigator slider obviously puts an emphasis on providing directions to your destination, and a few nifty features help it excel at the task. First up, it features the just-announced Nokia Maps 2.0 app, which provides pedestrian in addition to the typical auto navigation -- a logical feature, considering this thing spends much of its life in your pants, not mounted to your windshield; secondly, it sports an integrated accelerometer that can keep the map updated at a reasonable rate while you're trolling about on foot ; third, the car mount is standard fare in the retail box, along with a 1GB microSD card. The S60 Third Edition handset also features an FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, 3.2 megapixel camera, 120MB of internal storage, and -- get this -- can be used for navigation without a SIM card. Imagine that! It'll come in no fewer than four versions -- one with EDGE only and three with various flavors of HSDPA for different corners of the world -- in the third quarter for &euro;300 (about $435).<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/the-nokia-6210-navigator/">The Nokia 6210 Navigator</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 04:15:00 EST. Though the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/13/nokia-refreshes-maps-application/">refresh</a> late last year was a welcome bonus, Nokia's Maps app that gets bundled with many of its S60 devices still lags Google Maps for Mobile in several key areas -- real-time traffic and satellite view, just to name a couple. Great news, though: Nokia's been hard at work crafting its next-gen navigation client, and it looks like it's shaping up to be a real gem. The software has been seeded to a few key folks in the public domain (but isn't yet available for download to the masses) so we're starting to see some first impressions trickle in, and in short, it looks like everything's better than it was before. The auto navigation screen is clearer and uses translucency to prevent large swaths of the map from being concealed, there's a new pedestrian mode, and satellite views and traffic data are now both available. There's no word yet on when the beta or the final version might go public, so we'll all have to be satisfied with the previews for the time being.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/09/nokia-maps-2-0-in-beta/">Nokia Maps 2.0 in beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 09 Feb 2008 12:32:00 EST. Google Maps is good -- some might say great, actually -- but one of the biggest beefs from the get-go was its inability to use GPS receivers, and when it finally "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/24/google-maps-for-mobile-gets-gps/">supported</a>" them, many didn't work. Symbian-Guru had obviously been circling the Google Maps camp like a hawk (as have many N95 owners), waiting for the day that the Nokia superphone's integrated GPS would work. Don't get us wrong, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/13/nokia-refreshes-maps-application/">Nokia Maps</a> is a fine application, but Google Maps has a certain mystique about it (traffic and satellite imagery, perhaps?) that make it worthwhile, too. Anyhoo, there's a native version of Google Maps for the N95 available immediately, featuring the aforementioned GPS support plus a direct save-to-contacts feature that's sure to see some heavy use. Grab it now!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2007/10/google-maps-now.html">Symbian-Guru</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/12/google-maps-gets-cozy-with-n95s-internal-gps/">Google Maps gets cozy with N95's internal GPS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 12 Oct 2007 11:50:00 EST. How appropriate that a car not much bigger than a cellphone (okay, that's an exaggeration, but this thing's pretty tiny) would get slapped with Nokia branding, right? Sadly, the integration between the automotive and cellular worlds isn't particularly tight here; Renault hooks up proud new owners of Twingo Nokia special editions with <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/02/12/nokias-6110-quad-band-hsdpa-gps-navigator/">Nokia 6110 Navigators</a> -- perfect for use with the integrated Bluetooth -- but that's about it. There's some sort of "Nokia tech-themed" decal stuck on the Twingo's B-pillar, too, but we're pretty sure that thing would have to get removed right quick if we found ourselves with one of these in the garage. Sorry, Nokia; don't get us wrong, we're happy to take a 6110 off your hands, but no free advertising for you. Especially when it doesn't look badass.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/transportation/" rel="tag">Transportation</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/04/renault-teams-up-with-nokia-for-twingo-nokia-special-edition/">Renault teams up with Nokia for Twingo Nokia special edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 04 Oct 2007 08:17:00 EST. Now don't get too excited -- we suspect the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/nokias-6110-quad-band-hsdpa-gps-navigator/">6110</a> still doesn't have any US-friendly HSDPA that was hurriedly added since its introduction at 3GSM, but we can still take comfort in knowing that Nokia's thinking of us on this one. Heck, we might even end up seeing it at a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/21/nokias-chicago-flagship-exclusive-walkthrough/">flagship store</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/05/nokia-nyc-flagship-store-preview/">two</a>. As a refresher, the 6110 Navigator is a S60-based slider with integrated GPS, quadband GSM (hence the FCC nod, we reckon) and 3G data all the way up to HSDPA speeds; other features include a 2 megapixel cam, 40MB of onboard storage, and microSD expansion. No word on just when we might get our paws on a sample, but FCC approval is a solid first step.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gprs/" rel="tag">GPRS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/03/nokia-6110-navigator-gets-its-fcc-wings/">Nokia 6110 Navigator gets its FCC wings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Apr 2007 21:39:00 EST. The software package rings in at $6/month for 10 trips and $10/month for unlimited use, offering all the same navigational features that you'd find on TeleNav's previous Cingular offerings -- the 8125 / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=8525">8525</a>, Treo 650, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/25/hps-ipaq-hw6920-hw6925-finally-hitting-cingular-next-week/">HP hw6925</a> -- with a couple of added bonuses on the E62: the new "fuzzy search" feature, as the name implies, completes user entries based on predictive logic and previous searches, while 3D maps also make an appearance for the first time. Sorry, 680 users... maybe next version.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/telenav-gps-arrives-on-the-e62-202561.php">Slashgear</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.telenav.com/about/pr/pr-20061120.html">Read</a> - Nokia E62<br /><a href="http://www.telenav.com/about/pr/pr-20061122.html">Read</a> - Treo 680<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/software/" rel="tag">Software</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/palm/" rel="tag">Palm</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/palm-os/" rel="tag">Palm OS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/24/telenav-expands-to-nokia-e62-treo-680/">TeleNav expands to Nokia E62, Treo 680</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 24 Nov 2006 17:11:00 EST. In what seems to be a brilliant marketing maneuver, Nokia is hyping its new CK-20W Car Kit as the "first integrated hands-free solution to combine high-quality communication, music, navigation and push-to-talk in the car," when all you're really getting is a dash-mounted dock and a remote. According to Nokia, you need to supply your own GPS Bluetooth receiver if you want navigation functionality (they suggest the forthcoming Nokia LD-2 Navigation Pack), although music streaming and hands-free chatting are achievable right out of the box. The kit is compatible with most Nokia phones and even standalone MP3 players if all you want are some tunes, but adding the nav pack requires you to own a S60-powered device to run the Route 66 mapping software. Prices have not been announced yet, but both the car kit and GPS receiver are expected to be available next quarter.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://blog.wired.com/cars/index.blog?entry_id=1486707">Wired Blogs</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/peripherals/" rel="tag">Peripherals</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nokia/" rel="tag">Nokia</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/symbian/" rel="tag">Symbian</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/24/nokia-ck-20w-car-kit-promises-to-bundle-talk-tunes-and-nav/">Nokia CK-20W Car Kit promises to bundle talk, tunes, and nav</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 May 2006 16:00:00 EST.
