Square Enix's Project Hikari makes a good case for VR comics
Comics are big business in Japan, but here in the West, Japanese and American titles alike tend to get overshadowed by movies, television and video games. In fact, many of those programs might even be adaptations of popular comic titles. For its first big VR project, Square Enix's Advanced Technology Division is putting the spotlight back on manga. But it isn't just about taking these stories and pasting them into a headset. Due for release in 2018 on all major VR platforms, Project Hikari aims to capture the look and feel of reading a manga while taking advantage of the immersive nature of VR to let the viewer delve deeper into these worlds.
'Batman: The Animated Series' is coming to Blu-ray in 2018
Batman: The Animated Series is finally getting the remaster treatment it deserves. From this weekend's New York Comic Con Warner Bros. announced that "later in the year" in 2018 it will release the influential animated show to high-def formats. As Polygon notes, the specifics are a bit fuzzy at this point. Will the 85-episode show come out all in one boxed set, or in volumes like the DVDs before? At this point that's up in the air. However, any package will likely look and sound better than streaming the show on Amazon Prime. Plus, every episode will almost assuredly have the iconic opening credits sequence attached.
Magic Leap will get Madefire mixed reality comics on launch day
Magic Leap is getting Madefire's mixed reality comics from day one. Reps from both companies announced their partnership at the New York Comic Con, revealing that they've actually been working together for the past five years. They promise you'll be able to view comic panels like they're 3D illustrations floating mid-air and that you'll be able to pin them around your room like digital wallpaper. Madefire plans to bring all its graphic novels to Magic Leap, including comics from Marvel, DC and Blizzard, along with original titles made just for the device.
‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ trailer pits John Boyega against kaiju
Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim was a geek's fever dream, mixing together elements of kaiju (giant monster) films, huge robots and anime. Now, the cinema gods have blessed us with a sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising. This time, it's John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) in the starring role, playing the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost from the first film. He's a former Jaeger pilot turned criminal who finds himself as part of the resistance fighting against a new wave of monsters. And as you'd imagine, they're even bigger than what we saw before.

Amazon is no stranger to sci-fi author Philip K. Dick's somewhat skewed vision of the future, having found success with The Man in the High Castle and its alternative history timeline. The company teased its new anthology series based on the author's work, Electric Dreams, this past August, but now fans are getting a much more in-depth trailer at New York Comic Con. It's full of weird and wonderful visions of our future, all based on Dick's writings. The team also screened a short clip from The Man in the High Castle's third season.
Sphero’s R2-Q5 ‘Star Wars’ droid is basically a goth R2-D2
Sphero just announced a new app-controlled robot a few days ago, the Mini, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have anything else in the works. The company has now revealed the latest member of its Star Wars family, R2-Q5, the Empire's version of the beloved R2-D2 character. As is the case with all of Sphero's toys, you can take charge of R2-Q5 via its Droids app for iOS and Android, where you'll be able to drive it, hear it make sounds and use it to play various mini games. You'll need to act fast if you want one for yourself: Sphero says the number of R2-Q5 numbers made is in the "low thousands," and Best Buy has an exclusive on it in the US, while John Lewis has that honor in the UK. Pre-orders are open now for $200/£200, with shipping expected to happen November 5th.
Hulu’s next show pulls a gamer into the past to save the future
Hulu's surely riding high after its original show The Handmaid's Tale took home the Best Drama Series Emmy, but its next series looks to be a bit lighter-hearted. Created by Seth Rogan and frequent partner Evan Goldberg, Future Man tells the story of a janitor at a biotech company who beats a video game -- only to be chosen by its creators for a mission to the past in order to save the future.
Netflix's next original is a personal kind of superhero story
Finding superhero stuff on Netflix isn't difficult whatsoever, but the streaming service and actor Michael B. Jordan have a new type of origin story in mind. Raising Dion asks what it'd be like to, as its name suggests, raise one from childhood. Dion has telekinetic powers, can summon blue flames in his hands (perfect for roasting marshmallows indoors), make himself literally invisible and teleport. He's still very much a seven year-old boy though, and doesn't quite have a handle on the hows and whys of his powers. For example, he asks his mom why his poop isn't invisible too. It's a fair question.
