.DS_Store files begone
Judging by the reaction to my MS Remote Desktop Client post, it is safe to assume I am not the only Mac user working in a Windows dominated office (nor am I the only one who takes care of lots of Windows machines). Therefore, extrapolating a little bit, I think I can safely say that folks who read this blog connect to Windows machines over the network for file-sharing.If you connect to a Windows file server (or any other file server) with OS X something is happening that you might not be aware of. OS X creates a .DS_Store file for each folder that you look at. This file contains preferences for the way those files and folders should be viewed. They are hidden away on OS X, so you never see them, however, if you connect to that Windows share with a Windows machine (after the Mac has connected) those darn files show up everywhere.Apple details how to stop OS X 10.4 from creating this files on remote servers, but warns that unforeseen consequences might be encountered.[via Paul Stamatiou]
MacBook Invisble Shield reviewed
Paul Stamatiou has a MacBook and he is concerned about the possibility of discoloration. What's a geek to do? Why, apply ShieldZone's Invisible Shield plastic protector, that's what.Paul says that applying the shield isn't easy, but it isn't hard either (how's that for a review?) though an extra set of hands is recommended. Overall, if you're worried about sullying your precious MacBook Paul says these are for you.
Productivity on OS X
Paul Stamatiou is more productive on a Mac. Why? The combination of Exposé, Quicksilver, and Spotlight. These three things taken together really make the Mac a powerhouse of productivity (and I should know since I use the very same tools, though I tend not to need Spotlight that much. I'm just that good).Now, I spend a fair amount of time using Windows and it isn't an awful experience (Windows is good for some things), however, whenever I am on my Mac I feel like I'm getting more done.So, TUAW readers, share your productivity hints in the comments so that we can all become dynamos of productive power!
