The PlayStation app is live and ready to download in Europe, after making a fashionably late entrance in line with the fashionably late PS4. The console arrives in a few days time on November 29, some two weeks after hitting North America. Still, it could be worse - couldn't it, Japan? To recap for our Euro-pals, the iOS and Android companion lets you access the PlayStation Network to chat with friends, compare trophies, purchase stuff on the store, access system guides, and a fair bit more besides. It also syncs up with the PS4 in various ways, including as an on-screen keyboard, and by offering the same Second Screen functionality (note: not Remote Play) that the Vita provides with certain PS4 games. Sony also detailed that 18 apps will be available on the PS4 across the European launch, although a lot of them are limited to certain countries. The UK will get BBC News, BBC Sport, BBC iPlayer, and Demand 5 apps, for example, and there are similar TV-based apps for specific countries like Germany, Belgium, and Spain. As for the more generally available apps, they include IGN, Netflix, Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited, and VidZone. The PS4 companion app, while initially due today in Europe, has been pushed back to November 29 – the day of the PS4 launch. Sony needed the extra time to make "some final tweaks to ensure the experience is butter-smooth for you ahead of the PS4 launch next Friday," the company announced on the PlayStation Blog. The free app, compatible with both iOS and Android devices, integrates with the PS4 by allowing users to browse their friends lists, Trophies, the PSN store and unlock certain second-screen experiences – like extra in-game content or alternative control options. The app went live in the US two days prior to the PS4.

PS4 owners-to-be can put twiddling thumbs to use by downloading the PlayStation App, which is out now on iOS and Android in North America. As for Euro twiddlers, unless they have an Android device they may have to wait until nearer November 29, when the console launches on that side of the ocean. North Americans still have to wait until Friday to check out of the app's PS4-based features, such as providing a screen-based keyboard for the console, or a second SmartGlass-like screen for certain PS4 games. In the meantime, there's always things like text chat with PSN friends, trophy comparisons, profile viewing, game alerts, and PS Store browsing to keep you occupied. When the console does arrive on November 15, PS4 owners will be able to use the app to download purchased content directly to their new black box. Also, one very useful thing the app links to is the console's web-based user manual. As it happens, we can do that too.

PlayStation Vita owners will receive a PlayStation 4 companion app after installing the portable's next firmware update, Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida revealed via Twitter. The "PS4 Link" app will head up Sony's planned expansion within the mobile marketplace, which Yoshida detailed last week. A similar app will be released for iOS and Android devices at the PlayStation 4's launch. Originally announced as "PlayStation App," Sony's mobile utility will give users access to supplementary material during gameplay, similar to Microsoft's SmartGlass initiative for the Xbox One. PlayStation App also allows users to purchase content online, browse status updates from friends, and watch streamed gameplay from a linked PlayStation 4 console.

With a new PlayStation app, Sony plans to extend the PlayStation 4 console experience to a second-screen. Announced for iOS and Android devices, the app will allow players to enhance their gaming experience by accessing information – such as maps for the PS4 title being played – as well as make purchases for their console on the go and "remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."Based on its description, the app seems similar in purpose as Microsoft's SmartGlass application; however, Sony's offerings expand further with the addition of updates to its PlayStation Vita. As revealed during its PlayStation 4 reveal event, the Vita will be able to remotely play console games with the use of Gaikai's streaming technology.

Nintendo isn't the only gaming outfit playing around with a second screen -- Sony has plans of its own. The aptly named PlayStation app promises to expand gameplay to a player's iOS or Android device, propagating in-game maps, social networking tools or simply an easier way to access the PlayStation store. The application's functionality sounds an awful lot like the Wii U GamePad, though Sony hasn't mentioned if off-screen play via tablet will be a possibility. Even if that function doesn't come to your smartphone or tablet, it's definitely available on PlayStation Vita, which fills out the rest of the company's second screen plans with its remote play feature. It's not quite a PlayStation Phone, but Sony has announced a PlayStation app for phones. That's still pretty cool, right? SCEE will soon release "The Official PlayStation App" in Europe, offering light PSN interaction on your iPhone or Android device -- "light" as in you won't be playing games through it, but you can look at your Trophies and the status of your friends. You can also keep up with the EU PlayStation Blog from within the app. The first version of the PlayStation App will be available soon in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. Sony is working to add more countries to that list and also planning new features. No announcements have been made for a release outside of Europe, however.

The European PlayStation site today announced an upcoming official PlayStation app for the iPhone and Android platforms. The first version of this app will allow you to check your PlayStation trophies, read your friends' status updates, and keep up with news about the PlayStation console and its games. You'll even be able to share your favorite products with your friends via social networks like Twitter and Facebook. We don't have word on a US version of the app yet, unfortunately, so until then, this is just for you folks in Europe. The app's initial release will only be available in France, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. Sony is already working on expanding the app to other countries; we're obviously hopeful that it will reach the US. [Via MacStories]
