Google is rolling out media playback and messaging updates on Android Auto to make it more convenient while keeping safety at the forefront. The refreshed media interface should quickly help you find something you want to listen to , while the system can display short previews of texts -- but only when the car is stopped.
Pocket Casts' new features make it arguably the best podcast app
Even with a number of workable free services for listening to podcasts, Pocket Casts is a popular option for episodic audio. Indeed, it does cost you a few dollars, but the app is well designed and offers a more comprehensive feature set that some of the free software doesn't. Following its sale, in May, to a public radio group that includes NPR, Pocket Casts is debuting a big overhaul today that makes what many consider to be the best podcast repository even better.

Pocket Casts, the incredibly popular podcast application, announced today that it is opening up a public beta program for Android users. This will allow any interested user access to the app's newest features, with the caveat that builds might be broken or unstable. NPR, This American Life, WNYC Studios and WBEZ Chicago have teamed up to buy Pocket Casts, a cross-platform podcast app. The public radio outlets hope to improve the podcast discovery experience, help creators find new audiences and improve insights for producers.
Pocket Casts for Android lets you see what people near you are listening to
If you use Android and love podcasts, chances are good you've stumbled upon the Pocket Casts app. It's well-designed, easy to use and includes a host of excellent features to help you discover new podcasts. Today, developer Shifty Jelly is adding another new discovery option, and it's a rather unconventional one: Pocket Casts now includes a "Nearby" feature that shows you what other users near you are listening to. If you go to the "Discover" tab in Pocket Casts and tab on "Nearby," you'll see the top podcasts being listened to by others who've enabled this sharing feature. You'll also see what shows you have in common with other users near you (chances are good you'll be seeing Serial pop up a lot here).
