Pokémon Go is coming up on its one year anniversary and Niantic is planning a major celebration. Events are scheduled around the world but the biggest will be Pokémon Go Fest taking place in Chicago on July 22nd. There aren't many details about the event just yet other than that it will take place in the city's Grant Park.

If there's one thing our (fictional) mom always told us, it's that we shouldn't go out walking at night with our smartphone on show. The folks at Niantic Labs feel differently, and think that poorly lit Fall nights around Halloween are the perfect time for everyone to catch some pocket monsters. The company is launching its first "global in-game event" to encourage Pokémon Go players to go out and catch some spooky 'mons.

The head of The Pokémon Company has let slip that his outfit is working on a pocketable monster title for Nintendo's NX. Given that TPC is part-owned by the Japanese gaming giant, he's probably seen the new handheld/console/tablet hybrid up close and personal. The Wall Street Journal quotes Tsunekazu Ishihara as saying that "the NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device."

Pokémon Go may be a smash hit in the US, Canada, UK, New Zealand and about 20 other countries -- but did you know that nobody is playing the game in the Japan? It's not for want of trying. Despite being the franchise's homeland, Pokémon Go still isn't available to Japanese users. What's the deal? According to Niantic's CEO, Japan's servers just aren't good enough to handle the game.

Remember that Nikkei report that said Nintendo was eyeballing mobile devices? The one that Nintendo immediately denied? It might be true after all -- sort of. The Pokémon Company has confirmed that the Pokémon Trading Card Game Online will be available as an iPad app later this year. The app, a digital update of the 1996 trading card game of the same name, was spotted by Twitter user Josh Wittenkeller at a Play! Pokémon event. Nikkei's original report suggested that Nintendo was planning to use mini-games on smart devices to lure gamers to its console products, and this definitely seems like a step in that direction.

Having covered some basically illicit Pokémon content, we'll turn now to more official channels-- it doesn't get more "official" than Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara. Ishihara believes that a certain franchise is going to win the "hardware war" for Nintendo. Guess which franchise? No, not Clu Clu Land. "The hardware which has Pokémon on it will be the winner," he told Gamespot. Ishihara was also down on multiplatform development, saying that not being able to design around one system's unique features stifles creativity. Amusingly (to us) Ishihara hinted that he had "ideas" for the next Pokémon games. Of course he does! We all do: they're all in the previous games. We love Pokémon, but we are willing to admit that they're pretty much all the same game.[Via Next Generation]
