  • Poll results: Do friend codes ever keep you from playing online?

A week ago, we asked you how you really felt about Nintendo's friend code system on the DS, and it turns out there's a real difference in opinion out there. It's particularly interesting to note that nearly a third of our readers who voted definitely spend more time gaming online on other platforms. Maybe these are the kind of numbers Nintendo should be looking at when they evaluate the company's online future, instead of these numbers. Thanks to everyone who took part!

The results of our rigorously unscientific poll are in and they reveal a shocking truth: our readers like the DS Lite. Almost half of you purchased a DS Lite on launch day, an interesting fact given that most of you likely already own a DS Phat. There were those that decided to stick with the old model exclusively (14%) while others decided to wait for a lower price or a more appealing color (21%). As for the 18 readers who didn't approve of the DS Lite, we'll deal with you soon enough.

  • Poll results: (Reevaluated) next-gen combo platters

After receiving over 30,000 votes -- a new Joystiq record methinks, and nearly four times as many responses as our earlier poll -- we finally have a winner! For our poll, we wrote, "With a finite amount of entertainment dollars going to next-gen consoles, it could be argued that every extra dollar spent on a PS3 is one less being spent on another console like the Wii." With a more expensive PSWii combo, our readers aren't going to be dropping the Wii so much as they'll be buying less PS3s. Even with a much larger test bed, the percentage of respondents who intend to purchase a Wii is roughly the same; however, the PlayStation 3 suffered a significant setback, resulting in an increase in Xbox 360 purchasing intentions. Total percentages: # of votes - % of votes - previous %Wii: 26204 votes - 85.93% - 84.21%PS3: 6581 votes - 21.58% - 48.41%360: 17629 votes - 57.81% - 46.30%Market share: new % - old %Wii: 51.98% - 47.06%PS3: 13.05% - 27.06%360: 34.97% - 25.88%It is clear that Peter Moore's assertion that people are "going to buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii" has some legs, with a plurality of voters choosing the Wii60 combo platter. Nintendo's console combo strategy also appears to have withstood Sony's price announcement, just resulting in notably less PSWii bundles.Of course, these numbers may have no analog in real life sales for any console (statisticians we are not) but they do represent an accurate depiction of what Joystiq readers think. Have at 'em.(Update: corrected some grammatical confusion.)

  • Poll results: Hitachi drives rule the roost, Samsung ain't so quiet

Well, it looks like most of us are proud owners of the (reportedly) louder Hitachi drive. While we won't disagree that the Hitachi drive is loud, many of our readers disagree that the Samsung drive is quiet. Simon writes, "Well I have the Samsung but it isn't anywhere near what I'd call quiet."; Todd agrees, "my Samsung [is] LOUD too, I have it sitting next to my G5 Mac and that thing definitely takes over in the sound department when on." The list goes on and on. So there's two different drives and both are apparently pretty loud. There have to be some trade offs for the increased 12x read speed; loud drive or fast load times?
