One of the notable innovations in this year's lineup of HDTVs are the extremely slim bezel flat panels available from Samsung like the D7000 model pictured above. Now that this and many of the other 2011 HDTVs are on sale, we're wondering whether that's actually a strong selling point for you, or if you like big bezels any you cannot lie. Select a poll choice and let us know why an extra half-inch or so of material around the picture is really that distracting.
The rumor mill indicates we can expect serious competition for Netflix's Watch Instantly service sometime soon, so we're wondering what features anyone else diving into the game may want to focus on in order to get your attention. Given the service's wide reach we figure you're probably a subscriber or at least gave it a shot whether by word of mouth or through one of those annoying pop under ads (why do they still run those?) and have seen some room for improvement. We've put a few of our ideas as options in the poll below, let us know what you'd like to see most in the comments below.
Even as the supply of great Blu-ray discs continues to increase, so do the competing ways to get movies, even in HD. So we're wondering if the advent of streaming and downloading is cutting into your disc based movie habits yet, or if you're still addicted to those old platters. Let know how it's going in the poll results and comments below.
Reincarnation may not be part of everyone's belief system, but ABC has apparently embraced the concept for its eavesdropping Sync iPad app, which blipped in and out of existence after My Generation failed spectacularly last fall. At least that's what Rick Mandler, vice president of digital media at ABC, shared at Hill Holiday's TVnext conference, stating, "we went back and said, let's try this again with a show that we know is going to be around for a while." Now, the app is being called away from the pearly gates to serve as an iPad companion for Grey's Anatomy and presumably will operate much like the original, by providing synced polls, quizzes, and social media ties-in -- you know, playing into that whole three screens trend. There's also no word on whether the app will receive a makeover befitting of its new McSteamy / Dreamy subject matter, or when this revival will actually take place. If ABC really wants this new media interaction experiment to go differently this time, though, we expect to learn more from an intense voice talking over flashes of frantic gurney races and risque locker room encounters sometime soon.

Update: Disney / ABC Television group has now made an official announcement about the application. Apparently, the latest iteration will launch with this Thursday's episode and includes new features such behind-the-scenes extras as well as the ability to "check-in" to special environments shown in the episode. In other words, our dreams of hopping on the same elevator with McDreamy can come true virtually -- and best of all, we can let the world know through Facebook. To see what we mean check out the video after the break.
Continue reading ABC's Sync iPad app is getting revived for Grey's Anatomy (update)

ABC's Sync iPad app is getting revived for Grey's Anatomy (update) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 13:37:00 EST. TruMotion, expletive inducing Auto Motion Plus, MotionFlow, every manufacturer has some slick name for its 120Hz / 240Hz / 480Hz etc. motion processing technology that speeds up the refresh and interpolates frames for an ostensibly smoother video experience, but we know that isn't always the case. It can vary from the implementation to the content viewed, but after the "triple ball effect" and experiencing one too many films that suddenly look like soap operas, finding out how to disable the effect is one of the first things we've learned how to do on many TVs. Of course, everyone has their preference, let us know how you feel and when it's best put to use.
View Poll

Poll: Do you turn your HDTV's motion processing on or off? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 16:50:00 EST. UK-based research firm Mintel has taken some time out of their usual schedule tracking the sales of pies and pasties (Beef Pie is leading) to investigate consumer reaction to HDTV and says its results indicate women are far less enthusiastic than men about high definition televisions. Even with nearly 20 million HDTVs in Britain, less than half of the people surveyed are actually receiving HDTV broadcasts. According to Mintel, women are turned off by a focus on sports in the programming and don't think the increase in picture quality is worth paying for. Interestingly, while they were also less interested in 3DTVs, they were nearly as likely as men to be interested in watching 3D movies at the theater and to agree it was worth paying extra for. If you believe in the notion that targeted programming is the answer, on this side of the pond networks like E!, Lifetime, Food Network and others have jumped to high definition in recent years, not to mention that the overwhelming majority of primetime and daytime programming has already upgraded to a higher resolution so we're wondering if you're seeing the same results in your household.
View Poll

Poll: Do women care about HDTV? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 13:40:00 EST. We've seen various providers from Comcast to U-Verse to Verizon roll out / refresh their online portals with loads of streaming TV content, bringing the cable video on demand experience to the PC, but is anyone taking advantage of TV Everywhere? Other options like Slingbox and of course, pirated streams and downloads have been around and will remain, plus newer unaffiliated sources like Hulu and Netflix, so we'll see if there's any room left for these initiatives, and if they're enough to keep you paying that ever-expanding TV bill each month.
View Poll

Poll: Are you using TV Everywhere, anywhere? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 22 Aug 2010 14:15:00 EST. The launch of Android in the living room is closing in on us, and with the Chrome to Phone push app going official plus a quick mention by partner Dish Network on its earnings call we're wondering what you're thinking of Google's technology so far. As a mobile platform Android is doing well, and there have already been a few apps demonstrated that could bring some interesting wrinkles on the TV, but this is far from the only competitor in the networked TV market. Of course, last year when we proposed the question before anything was announced, 37% of you were into the idea. Now that we've had some time to let the demonstrations and videos sink in, do you see Google TV in your future?
View Poll

Poll: Are you interested in buying Google TV hardware? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 15 Aug 2010 15:55:00 EST. After breaking down every difference we could think of between the TiVo Premiere and a Windows Media Center CableCARD setup, we're wondering what you feel is really important . If you're a heavy TV watcher, a DVR is a must, and if you're on this site, we're assuming it's connected to an HDTV. But if you had to narrow it down to one extra feature, what would win out, whether it's a UI you can't live without, the ability to schedule recordings from anywhere, access to internet video or just having enough capacity to record any and everything you want to watch, let us know what you're checking off first.
View Poll

Poll: What's the most important feature in a DVR? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 08 Aug 2010 16:12:00 EST. It's been a while since we asked how you feel about the progress Blu-ray is making, so let's hear it. Whether you're an owner with a massive library, occasional Netflix renter, stubborn holdout or somewhere in between we've spent years debating whether or not Blu-ray's 50GB movie platters would find a place in the market, and they have, but is it enough?
Sure, mom might say it's not polite, but we've got to know how many people are really coming out of pocket for the highest priced HDTVs. Of course, these days it's just as easy to grab a value priced model off the shelf at the local superstore or online outlet, or any price level in between. So check out the responses and let us know where taste and budget came together to make your newest HDTV possible.
WWDC's still a few hours away, but we're pretty sure of at least one thing: we're going to see the next iPhone revealed on stage tomorrow. What we don't know, however, is what that magical revolution will be called. We figured we take this one to the people and ask you -- feel free to hit us up with your own suggestions in the comments if we missed something, and don't forget to check out our live coverage of Steve Jobs' WWDC keynote tomorrow.
We're sure you get HD from a number of different places, but until the software engineers that make Engadget work add the ability to create polls that allow you to vote for more than one answer we're going to have to stick with these types of questions. That's ok though because everyone has one favorite source of HD content and we want to know what it is. If you do have two, you're just going to have to decide on a favorite. With all the talk of cord cutting the results of this one could prove to be interesting.
It's been exactly one year since we asked what display tech you were looking forward to purchasing next, and it's time to see if opinion have changed. 12 months later are you still optimistic OLED displays will ever be on sale in large screen sizes? Impressed by the progress of LCDs? Wowed by the 3D and 2D performance of the latest plasmas? Of course, there's still a few RPTVs kicking around, projectors have their place and there's other display tech on the horizon, so let us know what you're looking forward to in 2010 and beyond.
We don't know if an iPad has joined you for some couch computing yet -- or ever -- but reminiscent of its long journey from rumor to release, predictions of an Apple branded HDTV have appeared yet again. Our burning question for this week? Whether or not anyone is still waiting to see if the company makes the jump to such a competitive and often low-profit margin business. So if you can't see Apple mixing it up with the likes of VIZIO at Wal-mart, or can't wait for an improved UI and content experience engineered by the geniuses at Apple, let us know how you think things could go.
3D isn't just for TVs, among 2010's Blu-ray players and receivers the tag of "3D ready" has crept in ahead of the coming storm. So, are you looking for those two characters on the bullet point list of features before you even have a 3D home theater setup (if you plan on ever getting one)? Make a choice, then let us know why in the comments.
One last followup on the trends of CES '09, last time we checked about 20% of you were at least thinking about grabbing a new HDTV with internet features last year. Of course, that was before VIZIO's XVT 55-inch was delayed and we were slightly disappointed by the widget performance on Samsung's LED model and desires cooled off a bit. So, how many of you are currently watching the conference championships on screens with Ethernet or WiFi hookups embedded in them? Anyone actually tweeting or pulling in Facebook updates via their remote? According to what we saw this year, televisions acting as embedded platforms for more services is a trend that will keep growing, but how is it working out so far?
While last year's CES darling -- widget HDTVs --has expanded into full blown app stores built into every display or set-top box around, there's no question that the big news in Las Vegas in 2010 was 3D. Details on prices and exact shipping dates are still at best, sketchy, but we put our eyes into enough shutter glasses to last us until 2011. So, here's this year's question: are you ready to upgrade your HDTV for a World Cup, Avatar or BCS National Championship Game ready 3DTV? Or are you more inclined to wait for more content / lower prices before jumping in? Finally we can't forget those who never intend to buy a 3D ready setup and are perfectly happy with things the two dimensional way they've always been. Get your vote in, and as always, feel free to let us know why in the comments.
First Warner, now Disney, we're wondering if any of you are actually interested in any of these DVD trade in programs? Besides the issues of availability & selection there's whether or not you get to keep your old discs, and the simple hassle of participating. Still, clearly the studios think there's a market for these programs to get people jumping into Blu-ray discs and players, so let us know, are you biting?
According to the National Retail Federation, 29 percent of Black Friday shoppers visited electronics stores and some of the hottest items were those that are near and dear to our heart like HDTVs and Blu-ray players. So we wonder what you might have bought on Black Friday. Personally we wouldn't be found dead near any store on Thanksgiving weekend -- and generally avoid retail stores for the month of December -- but then again it shouldn't be much of a surprise that we do most of our shopping online.
Blu-ray players aren't the only deal going this weekend (check out our Black Friday roundups for more) but the fabled Blu-ray player for less than a hundred bucks is making an appearance at multiple stores this weekend so we've just got to know, will you be buying one? While Amazon and Newegg dole out LG BD270 players for around $99, Meijer has a Sylvania model for $89 and Wal-mart brings an $80 Magnavox NB500MG1F, matched by hhgregg's $80 Toshiba offer. Not cheap enough yet? onSale.com has refurbed Magnavox's for a mere $70, although with all of these you'll be missing out on some features from the higher priced players. but even the thriftiest among us can grab a Netflix streaming, BD-Live ready Insignia NS-BRDVD3 from Best Buy for a penny under a Benjamin, so what's your excuse going to be?

Just how far audiophiles will go to experience sensory nirvana -- and whether it's all in their mind or in their ears -- is a subject that can be discussed forever, but for now we'll try to break down just how much it means to you. We know the vast majority of the Engadget HD community is already surround sound equipped, but how far do you go to get the absolute top notch experience? Drop the details of your setup in the comments below, especially whether you think you've done enough or have even further to go in the audio quality arena.
The ratings are in and ABC's V was the highest rated series premier this season with a rating of 5.0, a 13 share which equals 13.9 million viewers. Of course this doesn't mean that many actually liked it and since we were pretty split here at Engadget HD, we wanted to know what you thought of this new Si-Fi show.

With Christmas right around the corner and the CEA predicting that consumers will spend more on electronics this year then last, we have to wonder what our dear readers think is the best Blu-ray player. Of course the PS3 is the most obvious answer since it pulls double duty as a gaming device, but movie lovers might prefer a standalone with other streaming features like VUDU or Netflix. At the same time, home automation nuts might prefer a player with discrete IR codes or maybe an RS-232 port. So keeping everything include the price in mind, which is the best Blu-ray player?
With Blu-ray disc adoption continuing to grow, we're wondering if your buying habits have changed. Last year Amazon ran away with the results, but it's 2009 now, Wal-mart has expanded its focus on Blu-ray (even nabbing the exclusive on TDK-style IMAX scenes for the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen release next week), Circuit City no longer exists and that weird guy in the white panel van even has a much better selection than he used to. So, where are you buying Blu-ray movies?
It all started with an iPhone-borne MMS video of a Kirby plush toy that I tried to send. You see, I don't have a 510 number -- that AT&T mobile number belongs to a friendly gentleman living in Fremont, CA, about 40 miles from where I reside -- but that didn't stop the message from going through the airwaves with his number listed as sender. Confused? Yeah, so are we, and a quick look through various forums say we're not alone. We've contacted AT&T for more information, but in the meantime, let us know if you've noticed any similar problems.
Blame Christmas Creep ((C) Tuesday Morning Quarterback), but we're already getting our Black Friday (R.I. P. KURO Friday) attack plan laid out. With prices diving and features spreading on Blu-ray players, receivers, LCDs and plasmas -- remember when a $1,000 42-inch 1024x768 plasma was a big deal? -- we figure you must have an idea of a big ticket item getting replaced in the next few months. Poll choices are for which component is getting added/swapped out sooner rather than later, let us know what product you're waiting for a price drop on in the comments.
The technology exists, or will soon, the only question is how or if it should be used. We know it won't require a huge stretch for your provider to deliver 1080p broadcasts, and CableLabs is right in step with others trying to figure out how to bring 3D home, but as a viewer which one would you rather see? Are older Zune models going the way of the brick? We've received a handful of tips pointing us to the official Zune forums, where reports are coming in that apparently a number of the non-Zune HD units haven't been able to sync with Zune 4.0 software. Although a few people have elaborated on some steps to take (hint: it involves a lot of downgrading and reinstallation of both firmware and Zune software), there doesn't seem to be a clear consensus on its effectiveness. Honestly, it's hard to tell from our end if this is really a widespread issue and we haven't seen it ourselves, so we're putting it to you, deer reader: has your Zune device forgotten how to sync with the mothership?

View Poll

Read - Sync Error Code C1010007
Read - More info on sync errors

Poll: Is your Zune device out of sync with Zune software? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 19:04:00 EST. Let's be clear right up front, we're not asking you how much you want to pay because we already know the answer; as little as possible. We want to know, what is the most you would pay. Now before you answer, lets put this into perspective. A dual tuner TiVo HD costs $300 at retail (plus subscription), a Moxi is $800 and the old ATI single CableCARD tuners were $300 -- so unlike the Ceton tuner, you'd have to rent four CableCARDs instead of just one. So keeping all that in mind, what is the most you'd pay for a single PCI-E card that could turn your Windows 7 PC and Xbox 360 into the best premium content HD DVR today?

According to a recent Nielsen report, 57 percent of US internet users reported that they've surfed the internet while watching TV. This sounds spot on to us, because we do it all the time. In fact we surf almost constantly while watching football to keep up with stats and fantasy teams, and have even been known to look up a forgotten character on Lostpedia while watching our favorite show. So are you as bad as us and record shows that you plan to playback while you have your laptop with you on the couch, or are we just weird. In the interest of full disclosure, this post was written in a room with no TV and was not influenced by any HD programming.

Finally, it's official and in our hands for a review. Now you decide, with the addition of HDMI-CEC, bitstreaming for the latest codecs, and in a quieter smaller case (although it might be a little slower loading, for now) the PlayStation 3 Slim is better and cheaper than ever for your home theater. So let us know, is that enough to get you to purchase one?
View Poll

Filed under: Polls, Blu-ray, Players, Sony

Poll: Will you buy a PS3 Slim to use as a Blu-ray player? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 29 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. It's that time of year, from now 'til CES a constant stream of new displays will finally be launched, touting specs, features and bullet points. Of course, once it's time to buy a new one we'll all have our own list of priorities, but which one is the least likely to make you consider a certain model? Whether it's a Hz race that doesn't concern you plasma fans, a complete disregard for useless contrast ratio measurements, or if you've already decided widgets aren't for you, let us know.

View Poll

Poll: Which HDTV feature are you least concerned about? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 23 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Studies just released by RBC Capital and ChangeWave Research polled iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre owners on their respective levels of satisfaction with their devices -- then compared them. In the studies, 200 iPhone 3GS users and 40 Palm Pre owners were polled. Overall, 99 percent of owners of Apple's phone proclaimed themselves to be "satisfied," while 82 percent of that number declared they were "very satisfied." The poll of Pre owners showed that 87 percent are "satisfied," and 45 percent of those owners describe themselves as "very satisfied." Interestingly, the 42 percent of "very satisfied" customers are the highest score ever attained by a Palm device, and it's a number that's only ever been bested by RIM and Apple. When asked about their respective reasons for buying their devices, Palm Pre owners listed the touchscreen interface, ability to multitask, and ease of use in the top three, while iPhone users cite its touchscreen, ease of use and faster web browsing as its biggest draws. So what about drawbacks? iPhone users (a whopping 55 percent of them, in fact) say that AT&T's network is their main gripe with the device, while Pre owners list short battery life and lack of third party apps as the devices biggest drawbacks. All in all, a pretty good showing for both -- though the microscopic sample size (especially for the Palm Pre) makes us wonder about the validity of the findings a bit.

Read - Apple's iPhone 3GS has 99 percent satisfaction rate
Read - iPhone vs. Palm Pre: Satisfaction bakeoff
Filed under: Cellphones

Palm Pre, iPhone 3GS owners' satisfaction polled, compared in new study originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 20:02:00 EST. We've discussed it again and again, the ills done by so-called HD channels against perfectly good content, whether it's passing off SD as high definition with Fox Widescreen, vomit-inducing stretching on TNT & TBS or the inexcusable cropping, zooming and pan & scanning of movies broadcast on AMC and HBO. But which one is the worst? Let your voice be heard, and if we forgot anything drop us a line in the comments.

View Poll

Poll: What's the worst mistake HD channels make? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 09 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Now that we've gone in depth with Windows 7 Media Center, with enough pictures, videos and explanations to make your head spin, if you haven't already made the jump are you considering making it a part of your home theater? Talking about it on the podcast this week, cost was a big reason why not, but moving beyond that the benefits of customization, integration, multiroom and everything else it can do are very compelling. Let us know if you've tried it out and how you're feeling about the latest iteration of Media Center.

View Poll

Poll: Do you / will you use Windows Media Center in your home theater? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 01 Aug 2009 15:30:00 EST.
