Other manufacturers may be jumping off DVD bandwagon, but Toshiba's still got some love for the format -- not to mention the waning days of summer. The Regza SD-P100WP is more than just a portable DVD player, of course -- for one thing, the gadget's got a 1024 x 600 display, for watching your stories on the go. There's also a built-in TV tuner and wireless LAN, so you can watch content recorded on network-connected Toshiba TVs and Blu-Ray players. Oh, and then there's the IPX7-level waterproofing, for when you absolutely need to catch up on old seasons of Breaking Bad on the beach. The SD-P100WP has an SD slot for playing music, looking at pictures and the like, and should give you about eight hours of DVD-watching on a charge.

So you're one of the dwindling few still in the market for portable DVD, eh? And you like Sony's latest but it's just a bit too rich, right? Pssst, yeah you, come 'ere. Evergreen has just slid open the trench to reveal this 7-inch portable DVD player doing what Sony's can't -- play DiVX files. In the US, anyway. Oh sure, the EG-D570X ekes-out 2.5-hours after recharging that external battery for 5-hours -- less than half the juice and nearly 2x the charge time as the Sony, but they both feature that same sucktastic 7-inch display capable of a mere 480x234 pixel resolution. Of course, Evergreen's not exactly synonymous with quality, but you'll be saving a Grant at just ¥17,980 or about $151. Now, whatcha gonna do, we ain't got all day? [Via Impress]

Wouldn't you know it? Right after we got done throwing away recycling all of our laptop PCs in favor of an explosion-free, desktop computing environment, Consumer Reports comes along with the disturbing news that some of our other favorite gadgets may have been tainted by Sony's huge batch of crappy batteries as well. In its On Safety blog, CR quotes Consumer Product Safefy Commission spokesperson Julie Vallese as saying that "the upcoming Sony recall [in October] could very well expand beyond notebook computers and could include DVD players and portable gaming devices." That's right folks, not only is it unsafe to use a laptop anymore, there's also a slight chance that all your battery-powered devices are ticking timebombs that could totally ruin a quiet night of Grand Theft Auto or Kill Bill. We'll keep you posted on the latest developments here, but if you just can't get enough of this inflammatory (ahem) fear-mongering, head on over to our new spin-off -- Engadget Recalls -- for round the clock coverage of what has now become the defining issue of our time.

If you've been looking for a portable DVD player that's a little more stylish than the usual fare, you may want to head down to your local Nakimichi distributor to check out the company's new 7-inch Lumos with its "jewel polished, sensuous black frame." We have to admit that this slot-loading model does look rather sensuous, and is all the more appealing when you find out that it supports both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs, MP3 and photo CDs, and even images and movies straight from your digital camera, thanks to the built-in SD slot. Your $512 also gets you NTSC/PAL support, a pair of speakers, digital audio output, leather strap and carrying case, and what looks like a rather poorly designed remote -- hey, you can't have it all.[Via Popgadget]

When you've got two kids screaming and kicking in the back seat of the car trying to share a single portable DVD player, you might as well not have one at all. Enter Axion's new AXN-6079 dual 7-inch screen portable DVD player, capable of accepting a video-in for in-car gameplay, or good for just splitting the screen two ways for your little brats darlings who haven't yet learned to play nice and share. We're pretty sure, however, these things aren't wireless, so if you're cable-phobic, be forewarned before plunking down your $230 when they're available at some point this month.
