A Toshiba executive has warned that there aren't any plans to bring more netbooks to the US; the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/toshiba-nb510-netbook-ces-2012-appearance/">NB510's</a> presence at CES this year is now as close as Yankees will get to any more Atom-powered notebooks from the outfit. Instead, all of Toshiba's enthusiasm for ultraportables in the country will be spent on Ultrabooks like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/18/toshiba-portege-z835-review/">Portege Z835</a>. It's a sad day for those who like their computers tiny, especially as it hikes the minimum price for a super-light Toshiba laptop to $800, but it's hard to ignore a rapidly declining market. We also imagine that Toshiba will gladly steer you to one of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/10/toshiba-excite-7-7-10-13-announced/">Excite tablets</a> if you're looking for the basics in a small shape.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/toshiba-bows-out-of-netbooks-in-the-us/">Toshiba bows out of netbooks in the US, sees Ultrabooks as the wave of the future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 11:07:00 EST. Sitting high on a shelf in Microsoft's booth, hidden among the earthly clamshell laptops, is the Toshiba Portege M930, a prototype whose 13-inch screen slides down to completely cover the keyboard. All told, it's awfully reminiscent of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ASUSEeePadSlider/">ASUS Eee Pad Slider</a> -- complete with a propped-up display and squat keyboard. The keyboard is so narrow, in fact, that Toshiba had to forgo a traditional trackpad and instead put a touch sensor and buttons over on the right edge. Though it's a bit heavy for an Ultrabook, at 4.2 pounds, it has some Ultrabook-grade innards, including a Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, Intel HD 3000 graphics and a 256GB solid-state drive. Take a tour around the device and you'll also find the usual array of ports: dual USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI, an Ethernet jack, an SD reader and separate headphone and mic ports.<br /><br />Even when we <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=site%3Aengadget.com%20eee%20pad%20slider%20hands-on%20dana&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CDMQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com%2F2011%2F09%2F14%2Fasus-eee-pad-slider-arriving-at-months-end-starting-at-475-v%2F&amp;ctbs=lr%3Alang_1en&amp;ei=DNAQT_LjJY6_2QXD-d2DCg&amp;usg=AFQjCNESEy-pD4M2t7sniBKdhI86eAT8Pw&amp;cad=rja">previewed</a> the Slider we weren't keen on sacrificing that much deck space in the name of bold industrial design and here, too, the keys feel unnecessarily crowded. The good news is that the hinge mechanism feels smooth and controlled -- not too tight, but rigid enough to inspire confidence in its build quality. That 13.3-inch screen also looks bright enough, though we imagine that 1280 x 800 resolution will be a turn-off for more than a few of you. Unfortunately, the M930 is so early its development that the touchscreen wasn't even working, though it responds just fine to the pen, which stows in the back of the laptop. No word on pricing or availability (Toshiba isn't even showing it at its booth), but even if this thing never materializes we've got some hands-on photos and video below.<br /><br /><em>Mat Smith contributed to this report</em><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-portege-m930-slider-hands-on-at-ces-2012/">Toshiba Portege M930 prototype hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-portege-m930-slider-hands-on-at-ces-2012/#4751328"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/toshdsc00611mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-portege-m930-slider-hands-on-at-ces-2012/#4751329"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/toshdsc00612mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-portege-m930-slider-hands-on-at-ces-2012/#4751330"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/toshdsc00613mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-portege-m930-slider-hands-on-at-ces-2012/#4751331"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/toshdsc00614mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-portege-m930-slider-hands-on-at-ces-2012/#4751332"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/toshdsc00615mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/13/toshiba-portege-m930-prototype-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toshiba Portege M930 prototype hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/13/toshiba-portege-m930-prototype-hands-on-video/">Toshiba Portege M930 prototype hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 20:20:00 EST. If we got you interested in the Tosh's Portege line earlier this week, you can now snag a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/01/toshibas-portege-z830-is-an-ultraslim-ultrasexy-ultrabook/">Z830</a> of your own without leaving the house. Depending on your preference of internals, you'll be able to choose between four models ranging from $929 up to $1,429, or opt to build your own ultraportable starting at $1,099. Of course, you can grab a Z835 direct and avoid Best Buy's guerilla marketing we encountered during <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/18/toshiba-portege-z835-review/">our time</a> with the lightweight -- but you'll miss out on the exclusive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/10/toshibas-portege-z835-coming-to-best-buy-for-899-aims-for-fea/">$800</a> model. If you're looking to place an order for the holidays, hit that source link below and get ready to part with a good bit of that Black Friday fund.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/25/toshiba-portege-z830-series-ultrabooks-now-up-for-sale-online/">Toshiba Portege Z830 Series Ultrabooks now up for sale online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 25 Nov 2011 05:04:00 EST. Toshiba should know a thing or two about skinny, featherweight laptops. Back in 2007, the company unveiled the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/05/toshibas-12-1-inch-portege-r500-is-worlds-thinnest-with-disc-d/">Portege R500</a>, a 2.4-pound laptop measuring what was then an anorexic 0.77 inches (19.6mm) thick. Much to everyone's disbelief, it managed to squeeze in an optical drive.<br />
<br />
Fast forward four years and it's entering the Ultrabook market with the Portege Z830 (that's the Z835 if you get it at Best Buy). And here comes the d&eacute;j&agrave; vu: it's even lighter than the competition, at 2.47 pounds, but still houses a full suite of ports, including USB 3.0 and 2.0, HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet. It also promises more than eight hours of battery life, besting claims made by the likes of Apple, Acer and ASUS. Not to mention, with a price of $800 (Best Buy only), it undercuts competing models -- and at a time when every other Ultrabook seems to have some fatal flaw, whether it be a flaky touchpad or skimpy battery life. Clearly, there's lots of room here for something more carefully thought-out. So is Toshiba's Portege know-how just what the market needs? Let's see.<br />

	Ready for your first helping of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/30/intel-reveals-skinny-ivy-bridge-ultrabooks-moores-law-defyin/">Ultrabook</a>? Because it's here. Behold: Toshiba's Portege Z830. Checking in at 2.5 pounds and 0.63 inches thick, the 13.3-inch magnesium-clad beaut that lies before you is 20 percent lighter and 40 percent thinner than its (relatively) svelte sibling, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/toshiba-puts-its-business-laptops-on-a-diet-intros-the-portege/">R380</a>. But don't be fooled by that diminutive profile, as Toshiba still managed to cram some serious silicon (an optional Core i7 CPU), up to 6GB of RAM and an eight-cell 47Wh battery inside. On top of those guts resides a keyboard that's both backlit and spill-resistant (!), a 1366 x 768 display and a 1.3 megapixel webcam in the lid. Also onboard are three USB ports -- one 3.0 and two 2.0, one of which does sleep and charge -- an Ethernet jack, HDMI and VGA output and an SD card slot. There's also the obligatory 802.11b/g/n WiFi radio, along with optional <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/IntelWirelessDisplay/">Intel Wireless Display</a>.<br />

	We're still waiting for a full rundown of the various configurations and specs, but Toshiba did tell us that the Z830 line will start at under $1,000 when it goes on sale come November. Until then, hop past the break for some brief impressions of a prototype unit.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/toshiba-puts-its-business-laptops-on-a-diet-intros-the-portege/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/04/toshiba-b2b-lead-image.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Toshiba/">Toshiba</a>'s thin-but-full-powered <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PortegeR700/">Portege R700</a> was such a hit among business types that the company is now designing other machines in its svelte image. Tosh just unveiled the Tecra R840 and R850 -- both of which ape the R700's slim build -- along with the Portege R830, a refresh to the R700 itself. The R830 looks the same, though it has a strip on the edge of the lid that looks like it's made of magnesium alloy, but is actually plastic -- a material that's expected to improve the signals of the the various antennae housed underneath it. And -- surprise, surprise -- this refresh adds a USB 3.0 port and Intel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SandyBridge/">Sandy Bridge</a> processor, which the company says should bump the rated battery life to a max of 11 hours, up from eight. Not the corporate type? The company will also sell an $889 consumer version, the R835, that has a one-, not three-year, warranty, and loses enterprise-grade features -- namely, Intel's vPro technology, a docking connector, and an ExpressCard slot. <br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the 14-inch R840 and 15.6-inch R850 are also getting Sandy Bridge CPUs, USB 3.0 ports, chiclet keyboards and all-around trimmer silhouettes. These laptops are now made with fiberglass-reinforced casing and the same Honeycomb rib structure that made last year's R700 sturdy enough to grab one-handed. Of the two, the R840's slim-down is more dramatic: it's 25 percent thinner than the last-generation Tecra M11, as you can see in the comparison shots past the break. That's largely thanks to Intel's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/AirflowCooling/">Airflow Cooling</a> technology, which rearranges all of the heat-generating components in a row and draws in cool air from outside the notebook, instead of within. <em>And</em> Tosh claims the battery can last up to ten hours on a charge (11 with an SSD) -- a vast improvement over the five and a half to six hours it promised the last time around. Moving up in size to the R850 will get you a number pad, but not that cooling technology. But it <em>is</em> about an inch thick at its thinnest, a point the PC maker is pleased as punch about. The R830, R840, and R850 start at $1,049, $899, and $879, respectively, and are available now on Toshiba's site, with the consumer-friendly R835 on sale at Best Buy and through the Microsoft Store. <br />

Integrated 3G is <i>so</i> 2009. These days, your laptop just ain't a mobile workhorse without a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/4G/">4G</a> module embedded under the hood, and Toshiba's making sure it keeps with the times by launching a pair of WiMAX-capable <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/toshiba-portege-r700-slides-in-with-a-thin-design-core-power-an/">Port&eacute;g&eacute; R700</a> models. The 13.3-inch ultraportable is relaunching with an integrated DVD drive, WiMAX support, the latest Core 2010 CPUs, an ExpressCard slot, eSATA / USB combo port, 4GB of DDR3 memory, inbuilt webcam and a six-cell battery. The Port&eacute;g&eacute; R700-S1332W in particular ships with a Core i7 CPU and 128GB SSD, while the Port&eacute;g&eacute; R700-S1322W steps down to a Core i5 and a 320GB (7200RPM) hard drive. Both units are shipping now from Tosh's preferred partners, with the high-end option going for $1,699 and the low(er)-end one selling for $1,349. It's on you to activate a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Clear/">Clear</a> plan, though.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/13/toshibas-13-3-inch-portege-r700-gets-a-pair-of-wimax-models/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toshiba's 13.3-inch Portege R700 gets a pair of WiMAX models</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/13/toshibas-13-3-inch-portege-r700-gets-a-pair-of-wimax-models/">Toshiba's 13.3-inch Portege R700 gets a pair of WiMAX models</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 17:45:00 EST. Stuck on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/toshiba">Toshiba</a> Portege R705's magnesium alloy palmrest is a shiny sticker celebrating the company's 25 years of "laptop innovation." Now, we're the first to hate on the plethora of decals that festoon Windows laptops these days -- and this one also deserves to be peeled off and tossed into the garbage -- but the sticker actually happens to speaks volumes about why the $800 R705 is such a big deal. We promise to keep the history lesson short, but for years the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/portege">Portege series</a> has been Toshiba's top-of-the-line ultraportable brand, featuring the latest CPUs while usually setting the standard for portability, and always been attached to seriously hefty price tags. Take the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/05/toshibas-12-1-inch-portege-r500-is-worlds-thinnest-with-disc-d/">Portege R500</a>, which was the worlds lightest laptop in 2007, and cost two grand. <br />
<br />
The Portege R705, which is exclusive to Best Buy for now, changes that formula. And in celebration of the big two-five, Toshiba's put out a 3.2-pound, Core i3-powered stunner that's less than half the price of past Porteges. Oh, and did we mention it has an on-board optical drive, 500GB of storage, Intel's wireless display technology and promises 8.5 hours of battery life? We won't beat around the bush -- it's impressive. But did Toshiba maintain the same Portege standards when creating the R705, or did it cut quality along with the dollar signs? That's been our main question, and we'll answer it and others after the break in our full review. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-prot-g-r705-review/">Toshiba Portege R705 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-prot-g-r705-review/#3165697"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/toshibaproteger70501_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-prot-g-r705-review/#3165698"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/toshibaproteger70502_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-prot-g-r705-review/#3165699"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/toshibaproteger70503_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-prot-g-r705-review/#3165700"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/toshibaproteger70504_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-prot-g-r705-review/#3165701"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/toshibaproteger70505_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/12/toshiba-protege-r705-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toshiba Portege R705 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/12/toshiba-protege-r705-review/">Toshiba Portege R705 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 12 Jul 2010 17:06:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Toshiba/">Toshiba</a>'s announced more than enough laptops for us in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/toshiba,laptops">past week</a>, but the 13.3-inch Port&eacute;g&eacute; R700 is ranking pretty high up there on our favorite list. The ultraportable has gotten a complete redesign at its core -- there's a new magnesium chassis that's been re-engineered with an internal honeycomb metal that aims to dissipate heat, as well as a new chiclet style keyboard. Yet, despite its mostly metal build and onboard optical drive, it measures less than an inch thick and only weighs three pounds -- yep, Toshiba is in fact claiming it's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/07/toshiba-building-worlds-lightest-13-inch-laptop-with-fast-charg/">lightest 13.3-inch laptop</a> ever. Rather unexpectedly, it doesn't chicken out with ultra-low voltage power -- instead there will be Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 versions. And the pricing is really enticing -- the Core i3 version with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive will retail for $999, the i5 model with a 320GB 7,200rpm drive for $1,299, and an i7 / 128GB SSD combo for $1,599. And there will also be a blue colored Best Buy version with a Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive for $899. Told you it was rising to the top of our list. These bad boys start shipping today, but if you need some more info before whipping out the plastic, hit the gallery below and the press release after the break. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-port-g-r700-hands-on/">Toshiba Portégé R700 hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-port-g-r700-hands-on/#3095506"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/proteger70001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-port-g-r700-hands-on/#3095507"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/proteger70002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-port-g-r700-hands-on/#3095508"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/proteger70003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-port-g-r700-hands-on/#3095509"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/proteger70004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-port-g-r700-hands-on/#3095510"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/proteger70005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-protege-r700-press-pictures/">Toshiba Protege R700 press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-protege-r700-press-pictures/#3096292"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/r700pressshots01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-protege-r700-press-pictures/#3096293"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/r700pressshots02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-protege-r700-press-pictures/#3096294"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/r700pressshots03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-protege-r700-press-pictures/#3096295"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/r700pressshots04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/toshiba-protege-r700-press-pictures/#3096298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/r700pressshots07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/toshiba-portege-r700-slides-in-with-a-thin-design-core-power-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toshiba Portégé R700 slides in with a thin design, Core power and an affordable pricetag</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/toshiba-portege-r700-slides-in-with-a-thin-design-core-power-an/">Toshiba Portégé R700 slides in with a thin design, Core power and an affordable pricetag</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 21 Jun 2010 00:30:00 EST. What would we ever do without our eagle-eyed readers? Bob has spotted the above M780 tablet PC from Toshiba (which we first heard of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/03/toshiba-portege-m780-highlights-business-laptop-refresh-to-core/">a couple of weeks ago</a>) on the company's official site, though its product page has yet to be linked to from any of the home pages. So it's official, but sort of prematurely so. Browsing through the spec sheet, this update to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-portege-m750-reminds-us-of-a-tablet-we-used-to-see-now-a/">M750</a> seems to lack for nothing, as its maxed out variant (priced at $1,799) offers a 2.66GHz <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/intel-core-presser-32nm-core-i3-core-i5-and-core-i7-cpus/">Core i7-620M</a>, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 7200RPM 320GB hard drive. Okay, you could stand to upgrade those integrated graphics perhaps, but it's a potent package nonetheless. It's also interesting to see these 12-inch convertible tablets maturing to the point of offering viable workstation performance, as the M780 is joined by Lenovo's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/23/lenovo-thinkpad-x201-tablet-review/?s=t5">ThinkPad X201T</a> and Fujitsu's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/18/fujitsu-sneaks-arrandale-based-core-i7-tablet-into-fcc-gets-us/">upcoming tablet</a> in offering Intel's finest and fastest dual-core processor inside.<br />

[Thanks, Bob]<br />

For some among us, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/02/sony-busts-out-colorful-vaio-e-series-laptops/">VAIO E series</a> is the pinnacle of modern mobile computing design. Then there are other, saner individuals, who prefer the understated aesthetics of what are commonly termed business laptops. For that latter group, we have a whole glut of new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/toshiba">Toshiba</a> notebooks to look at, highlighted by the delectable looking Portege M780 above. Much in the vein of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/hps-2730p-elitebook-tablet-pc-reviewed-seriously-loved/">HP's 2730p</a>, it's a 12.1-inch convertible tablet PC, with a spill-resistant keyboard and rugged features (tested to withstand drops from up to 1 meter), but its biggest attraction will still likely be the Core i5 heart thumping inside. Also undergoing upgrades are the Tecra A11 (already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/21/toshiba-ships-tecra-a11-core-i7-packin-qosmio-x500-and-more/">available in the US</a>), M11 and S11, which will come with up to 8GB of RAM, 802.11n wireless, SSD options, and of course Intel Core i7 CPUs. Check them out after the break, and expect them to arrive in Europe, the Middle East and Africa this quarter, with the M780 close behind them with a Q2 2010 release.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/03/toshiba-portege-m780-highlights-business-laptop-refresh-to-core/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toshiba Portege M780 highlights business laptop refresh to Core i-series CPUs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/03/toshiba-portege-m780-highlights-business-laptop-refresh-to-core/">Toshiba Portege M780 highlights business laptop refresh to Core i-series CPUs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Feb 2010 05:03:00 EST. <div align="left">Just when you thought you were safe from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-gets-official-with-portege-r600-ultraportable/">overwhelming</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-refreshes-pretty-much-every-satellite-laptop-ever/">spate</a> of laptops we saw <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-keeps-em-coming-with-tecra-r10-portege-a600/">last</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-portege-m750-reminds-us-of-a-tablet-we-used-to-see-now-a/">week</a>, Toshiba strikes again with the Portege A605. This notebook is based on the R500, but where the R500 measures .77-inches thick and weighs in at 2.4 pounds, the A605 is a relative behemoth at 1.18-inches thick and over 3 pounds. And unlike the R500 series, there are no SSD options available. Other than that, you get just what you'd expect: a 12.1-inch LED backlit screen, Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of RAM, 250GB SATA hard drive, DVD burner, and the promise of almost seven hours of battery life. <div align="left">Of all the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/09/toshiba-intros-four-new-portege-machines-tecra-r10/">Toshiba</a> laptops we've seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-refreshes-pretty-much-every-satellite-laptop-ever/">today</a>, this is certainly one of them. The M750 updates the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/10/toshiba-unveils-the-portege-m400-tablet-with-touch-capabilities/">M700</a> by changing up the processor (your choice of a 2.6GHz P8400 or 2.4GHz P8600 Intel Core 2 Duo), but besides that we have pretty much the same LED-backlit, touchscreen tablet: 160GB storage, 2GB memory, Intel 4500MHD graphics, Bluetooth and WiFi. Toshiba's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-gets-official-with-portege-r600-ultraportable/">new bounty</a> is all but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-refreshes-pretty-much-every-satellite-laptop-ever/">out there</a>, but we've still got two more to bring you before the onslaught is over. Up first is the business-minded <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/09/toshiba-intros-four-new-portege-machines-tecra-r10/">Tecra R10</a> (shown after the break), which shows vitals of 4.4-pounds and 1.13-inches thick. It also provides upwards of 5-hours of battery life on a single charge, an Intel Centrino 2 CPU, NVIDIA's 128MB Quadro NVS GPU, 14.1-inch LED-backlit display, ExpressCard slot, USB Sleep-and-Charge / eSATA combo port and a price tag starting at $1,549. On deck, we've got the 12.1-inch Port&eacute;g&eacute; A600, which offers up a Centrino 2 processor and 7.5-hours of claimed battery life while weighing just 3.2-pounds and measuring 1.18-inches thick. As with the rest, this one's ready to be ordered right this moment starting at $1,399.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20081014005805&amp;newsLang=en">Read</a> - Port&eacute;g&eacute; A600<br /><a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20081014005778&amp;newsLang=en">Read</a> - Tecra R10<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-keeps-em-coming-with-tecra-r10-portege-a600/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toshiba keeps 'em coming with Tecra R10 / Portege A600</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-keeps-em-coming-with-tecra-r10-portege-a600/">Toshiba keeps 'em coming with Tecra R10 / Portege A600</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 10:32:00 EST. We'd say it's a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/live-from-apples-spotlight-turns-to-notebooks-event/">pretty terrible day</a> for Toshiba to launch new laptops and expect anyone to pay attention, but we suspect that's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/new-macbook-pro-to-feature-removable-battery-and-hard-drive-acc/">glaringly obvious</a>. Continuing on in its launch of new and / or revamped machines <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-refreshes-pretty-much-every-satellite-laptop-ever/">today</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/09/toshiba-intros-four-new-portege-machines-tecra-r10/">Port&eacute;g&eacute; R600</a> has been hammered down as official. The unit tips the scales at 2.4-pounds and measures in at just 0.77-inches thin while including a built-in DVD burner. You'll also find a currently undisclosed CPU (the mystery! the suspense!), a LED-backlit display, a 128GB SSD and a USB Sleep-and-Charge / eSATA combo port. Toshiba should be updated its site here shortly with full customization options, but for now, just know that this beauty will get going at $2,099.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-gets-official-with-portege-r600-ultraportable/">Toshiba gets official with Portege R600 ultraportable</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 10:03:00 EST. Look, we hate to be crude -- after all, you won't find any bigger proponents for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/breastcancer">bulking up</a> the breast cancer research fund than the team here at Engadget -- but Toshiba might have a tough time selling its latest Port&eacute;g&eacute; M800. We mean, just look at it. We're not exactly sure how it gets off calling this thing "pink," but the 13.3-inch machine will be sold (or just stocked) exclusively at Best Buy Canada for $799.99. As for specs, you're looking at a 4.6-pound chassis, 2GHz T3200 CPU, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB hard drive, Intel's GMA4500M integrated graphics, a dual-layer DVD writer, Bluetooth / WiFi and a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam. $40 of each sale will be contributed to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, though we'd probably recommend picking up something a touch less ugly and just mailing in a donation yourself.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.chipchick.com/2008/10/pink_133_toshiba_portege_laptop.html">ChipChick</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/toshiba-reveals-pink-portege-m800-to-help-with-breast-cancer/">Toshiba reveals "pink" Portege M800 to help with breast cancer, probably won't sell any</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 00:44:00 EST. The last <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/portege/">Port&eacute;g&eacute;</a> we saw flow from Toshiba's doors was a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/17/toshiba-intros-12-1-inch-portege-r500-s5007v-with-128gb-ssd/">revamped R500</a> in July, but now we know why we've been waiting so long for a true new member of the family. Clearly, Tosh has been shoring 'em up, waiting for this day to arrive when it would introduce four newcomers in one fell swoop. Starting us off is the ultrathin Port&eacute;g&eacute; R600, which packs your choice of a Core 2 Duo CPU, 2.14-pound shell, a battery good for nine hours and a price tag ranging between $1,499 and $3,299. The Port&eacute;g&eacute; A600 includes most of the same specs along with a GMA X4500 graphics controller and a more pedestrian price; the Port&eacute;g&eacute; M750 Tablet PC adds in that always-exciting swivel action for those who care. Lastly, we've got the Tecra R10, which features a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo SP9400, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 200GB 7,200 RPM hard drive, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 150M GPU and an MSRP of $1,999. No word on when these will head south to the US, but Canadians should be able to indulge soon enough.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gottabemobile.com/Toshiba%20Portege%20M750%20Tablet%20PC%20Announced.aspx">GottaBeMobile</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tabletpcs/" rel="tag">Tablet PCs</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/09/toshiba-intros-four-new-portege-machines-tecra-r10/">Toshiba intros four new Portege machines, Tecra R10</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 09 Oct 2008 08:21:00 EST. Hopes had been reasonably high that Toshiba's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/toshiba-announces-portege-g810-smartphone/">G810</a> would rest near the top of the keyboardless WinMo food chain for a while, but if PocketNow's review is any indication, that's a tall order. Problem numero uno -- which we didn't need a review to tell us, necessarily -- is that the completely tactile-free directional pad and accompanying buttons make using the darned thing a challenge, no matter how cool the glowy blue lights may be. What's more, the screen is QVGA, which is unacceptable for a high-end WinMo handset in 2008, and the tester was unable to get even a single full day of battery life out of it with typical use. On the bright side, the camera appears to take some of the better shots we've ever seen come out of a cameraphone, but is that really enough to justify the $700-plus that retailers are commanding? Probably not.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsupa-1/" rel="tag">HSUPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/02/toshiba-portege-g810-reviewed-cursed/">Toshiba Portege G810 reviewed, cursed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 17:01:00 EST. Ah yes, we've been expecting you. That <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/14/toshiba-portege-r500-12q-surfaces-with-128gb-ssd/">Port&eacute;g&eacute; R500-12Q</a> that popped up on a few foreign sites earlier this year seems to be making the trip Stateside, albeit with a slightly different model name. The R500-S5007V claims to be the "world's first laptop with a 128GB SSD" packed within, which is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/17/toshibas-dynabook-ss-rx1-worlds-first-laptop-with-128gb-ssd/">patently untrue</a>, but we digress. The 2.4-pound machine also includes an integrated DVD SuperMulti drive, 12.1-inch transreflective LED-backlit WXGA display, a battery good for 8-hours of use, 1.33GHz Core 2 Duo U7700 CPU, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, GMA950 graphics set, WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and a three-year warranty. You better believe that 0.77-inch frame is appealing, but the $2,999 starting price is still mighty tough to swallow.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/storage/" rel="tag">Storage</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/17/toshiba-intros-12-1-inch-portege-r500-s5007v-with-128gb-ssd/">Toshiba intros 12.1-inch Portege R500-S5007V with 128GB SSD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 17 Jun 2008 08:00:00 EST. Akihabara's reporting that the Portege G810 should be hitting shelves on June 20th for some as-of-yet undisclosed price -- though we'd throw our money at it being in the higher end for Windows Mobile devices. A quick review of the spec sheet shows us Windows Mobile 6.1, HSDPA and HSUPA, 2.8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, WiFi, FM radio, GPS, and 4GB of storage via microSD. So there you have it, hop back over shortly before launch day and hopefully we'll have a dollar value to throw your way.<br /> </div>

Sure, you've seen a plethora of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/22/toshibas-portege-r500-laptop-in-the-wild/">R500 shots</a> already, but this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/14/toshiba-portege-r500-12q-surfaces-with-128gb-ssd/">ultrathin Port&eacute;g&eacute;</a> has somehow managed to keep its clothes on -- until now. One curious owner just couldn't resist the urge to operate, and after careful dissection, we're left with a handful of snaps showing off the unit's internals. Don't be shy, check out the whole lot in the gallery below.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.sycotecsolutions.com/">Jai</a>]<br /><br />

Toshiba's been cranking out a pretty <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/portege/">steady stream</a> of laptops since the year began, and it's making sure no slacking goes on in May. Revealed today, the 13.3-inch Port&eacute;g&eacute; M800 weighs in at 4.3-pounds and will be available with a white pearl finish with silver accents, not to mention the white LEDs within meant to keep things classy. Furthermore, you'll find a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T5750, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a WXGA (1,280 x 800) panel, Intel's GMA X3100 graphics set, a built-in DVD burner, three USB 2.0 ports, FireWire / VGA / headphone sockets, 802.11a/g/n WiFi, 56k modem, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth and Vista Home Premium running the show. Regrettably, there's no word on price, but you won't see this one arrive in Europe until Q3, anyway.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://techdigest.tv/2008/05/toshiba_adds_th.html">Tech Digest</a>, thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/07/toshiba-lets-loose-13-3-inch-portege-m800-laptop/">Toshiba lets loose 13.3-inch Portege M800 laptop</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 May 2008 10:18:00 EST. Over on Toshiba's European website (among other regions), an atypical <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/20/toshiba-portege-r500-3g-upgrade-gets-fcc-approval/">Port&eacute;g&eacute; R500</a> (the R500-12Q, to be precise) has made an appearance, and while most everything looks to be the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/05/toshibas-12-1-inch-portege-r500-is-worlds-thinnest-with-disc-d/">standard fare</a>, the included hard drive certainly isn't. Looking past the 12.1-inch LED-backlit display, Core 2 Duo ULV U7700 processor, 2GB of DDR2 RAM and dual-layer DVD writer lies a drool-worthy 128GB SSD, sure to send the flash faithful into a tizzy. There's no pricing information to be immediately found, but those scouting an ultraportable with a solid state disc have likely already come to grips with the lofty premium sure to be attached.<br /><br />[Thanks, Philippe]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/14/toshiba-portege-r500-12q-surfaces-with-128gb-ssd/">Toshiba Portege R500-12Q surfaces with 128GB SSD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 02:40:00 EST. Forget the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MacBookAir/">MacBook Air</a>: those folks seeking the absolute lightest notebooks on the planet know that Windows machines are still the only way to go, and Toshiba has proven that once again with an official <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/20/toshiba-portege-r500-3g-upgrade-gets-fcc-approval/">3G upgrade</a> to the already impressive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/r500/">Portege R500</a>. According to Akihabara News (which seems to be a little confused concerning the model number here), two new 12.1-inch, HSDPA-equipped configurations will be available this month: the ultra-lightweight (and ultra-pricey) R500-11J, highlighted by a 64GB SSD drive and impressive 1.72-pound package, and the cheaper, optical drive-packing R500-11I, which features the same 1.20GHz U7600 CPU and 2GB of RAM, but introduces a less appealing 120GB HDD. Pricing should be around &euro;2,500 ($3,658) for the high-end 11J and &euro;2,050 ($3,000 even) for the heavier 11I.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/21/toshiba-adds-3g-to-the-featherweight-portege-r500/">Toshiba adds 3G to the featherweight Portege R500</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 21 Jan 2008 09:39:00 EST. If that's not your thing, you can also look forward to the Blackberry-esque G710 (pictured after the break), which boasts GPS but no 3G, and the rather, um, unique-looking G450 "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/18/more-on-the-portege-g920-and-toshibas-2008-roadmap/">modem phone</a>" (also after the break), which boasts 3G but no GPS (among other differences). Evidence of Toshiba's new Portege G920 QWERTY doesn't get any better than <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/16/toshibas-portege-g910-g920-go-fcc-followup-to-the-g900-super/">an FCC filing</a>. Still if you need more, you're looking at the G920 held aloft in the wilds of some Tosh briefing. That slide on the left looks to be tattling on Toshiba's 2008 roadmap too -- at least Toshiba's lineup for launch in Russia where this presentation was apparently delivered. From it, we see the G920 scheduled for an early Q1 release followed by a G930 in early Q4. Also spotted is the G800 with stylus input, G710 and G720 with GPS, and G450 classed as a "USB modem phone." Expect to hear more on the Q1 column of devices at CES in a few weeks.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/18/more-on-the-portege-g920-and-toshibas-2008-roadmap/">More on the Portege G920 and Toshiba's 2008 roadmap</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 06:59:00 EST. <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/toshiba">Toshiba</a> joined the rugged, touch-capable laptop <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/10/latitude-xt-listed-on-dells-site-remains-elusive/">party</a> this morning with the launch of the Portege M700, an LED-backlit 12.1 convertible tablet that intelligently switches between pen and finger input. Apart from that, the 4.4-pound machine also features a modular drive bay with dual-layer burner, spill-resistant keyboard, latchless lid, and a shock-absorbing magnesium frame. Nothing too exciting going on internally: the M700 is a pretty standard Santa Rosa-based machine, with processor choices ranging from a 1.8GHz T7100 Core 2 Duo to a 2.4GHz T7700, integrated X3100 graphics, memory expandable to 4GB, Bluetooth and WiFi. Available now in configurations priced from $1699 and going up from there.<br /><span name="intelliTxt" id="intellitxt"></span><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tabletpcs/" rel="tag">Tablet PCs</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/10/toshiba-unveils-the-portege-m400-tablet-with-touch-capabilities/">Toshiba unveils the Portege M700 tablet with touch capabilities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 11:41:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/05/toshibas-12-1-inch-portege-r500-is-worlds-thinnest-with-disc-d/">Toshiba Portege R500</a>, a 12.1-inch ultraportable that we've been telling you about has just gotten a new 3G add-on cleared for takeoff by our favorite government agency, the FCC. The Core 2 Duo-driven laptop, which just hit the market, has been given the a-ok on an HSDPA module, potentially making this a big deal for people who are in dire need of connectivity options (jet-setting suits, we're looking at you). In case you've forgotten, the ultralight, ultrathin laptop starts at a weight of 1.72 lbs, can utilize a 32GB or 64GB SSD drive, and also has 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth. The "world's thinnest" laptop is on sale right now starting at $1,999, but no word on when the 3G is coming, or how much it will cost.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://pcjoint.com/toshiba-portege-r500-gets-35h-hsdpa-upgrade/">PC Joint</a>, thanks Stasys]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wireless/" rel="tag">Wireless</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/20/toshiba-portege-r500-3g-upgrade-gets-fcc-approval/">Toshiba Portege R500 3G upgrade gets FCC approval</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 20 Jul 2007 12:28:00 EST. There's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=sneak+peek">sneak peeks</a>, and then there's all out photographic mayhem. Thankfully for those looking to get a better view of Toshiba's Port&eacute;g&eacute; G500, the latest group of photos safely falls in the latter category, as <em>TheUnwired</em> has managed to snatch up a myriad of photos showing off the smartphone. Of course, you've already had time to read up on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/26/toshiba-announces-g500-wm5-device-with-extended-pc-connectivity/">specs</a> and decide if this thing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/11/htc-vox-and-toshiba-g500-reviewed/">was for you</a>, so why not hit the read link and see if the attraction is there when it bares all?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gprs/" rel="tag">GPRS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/17/toshibas-portege-g500-gets-photographed-from-every-angle/">Toshiba's Portege G500 gets photographed from every angle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 12:31:00 EST. Hold tight Europeans and Japanese -- if reports straight from a showcase in Paris are to be believed, you'll be able to get your palms around Toshiba's inviting <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/toshibas-g900-and-e01-with-windows-mobile-6/">G900</a> "this month." Of course, with but a few days left until July, it will only be a matter of hours before this hunch is proven true or false, but considering that it did already <a href="http://ringtones.engadgetmobile.com/2007/06/01/toshibas-g900-superphone-passes-fcc-muster/">pass through</a> the gates of the FCC, it's not too far fetched. So, do let us know if you're able to locate one across the pond in the coming days, will ya?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,55769">PocketPCThoughts</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gprs/" rel="tag">GPRS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/toshiba/" rel="tag">Toshiba</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/27/toshibas-g900-launching-this-month-in-europe-and-japan/">Toshiba's G900 launching this month in Europe and Japan?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 27 Jun 2007 16:57:00 EST. Just after seeing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Toshiba/">Toshiba</a>'s mysterious <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/22/beastly-toshiba-satellite-x200-laptop-gets-spotted/">X200</a> roaming free in France, it looks like that isn't the only machine from the firm running wild in the land of fragrances and fashion. The ultrathin Port&eacute;g&eacute; R500 was also spotted in Paris recently, and while we wish that NTT's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/21/ntts-tangible-3d-prototype-gives-feeling-to-on-screen-imagery/">3D glove contraption</a> was already a reality so we could feel this thing for ourselves, we'll just have to judge from afar for now. Sure looks as thin as advertised to us, but be sure and click through to see (more) for yourself.<br /><br />Update:<a href="http://cn.engadget.com/2007/06/22/engadget-toshiba-new-five-notebook-shanghai/">More shots from Engadget China.</a><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/22/toshibas-portege-r500-laptop-in-the-wild/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toshiba's Portege R500 laptop in the wild</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/22/toshibas-portege-r500-laptop-in-the-wild/">Toshiba's Portege R500 laptop in the wild</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 22 Jun 2007 10:41:00 EST. It's easy to jump to conclusions when you hear a spec like "2.4 pounds" -- things like no disc drive, minuscule screen and a complete lack of horsepower quickly spring to mind -- but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Toshiba/">Toshiba</a> is really taking things next-gen with its new Portege R500. The new bestest buddy to Tosh's flagship <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/R400/">R400</a> tablet, the R500 packs a first ever 7mm optical drive, 12.1-inch transflective (outdoor readable) LED-backlit screen, and does it all with a mere 0.77-inches of thickness, which Toshiba claims is the thinnest ever to include a disc drive, and that aforementioned 2.4 pound weight. The R500 isn't spec shy either, with a Core 2 duo U7600 1.2GHz processor, Intel GMA 950 graphics, up to 2GB of RAM, a 120GB HDD and a 1280 x 800 screen res. There's even a PCMCIA slot, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth and VGA out, just to make the other ultraportables look bad. To top it all off, Toshiba is boasting of the "world's longest" battery life for a 12.1-inch widescreen notebook, but doesn't have any hard numbers other than that. The laptop starts at $2,000 with XP Pro, or $2,150 with Vista Business, but the real fun starts later this year when Toshiba starts shipping 64GB SSD configurations, which once specced to a 3 cell battery and no optical drive will weigh a paltry 1.72 pounds.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://laptoping.com/toshiba-portege-r500.html">Laptoping</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/05/toshibas-12-1-inch-portege-r500-is-worlds-thinnest-with-disc-d/">Toshiba's 12.1-inch Portege R500 is world's thinnest with disc drive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 09:46:00 EST. FCC ratification really doesn't mean much of anything about a phone's eventual release or non-release stateside, but in this case, we're doing a little jump of joy nonetheless. The reason? Toshiba's do-it-all <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/12/toshibas-g900-and-e01-with-windows-mobile-6/">G900</a> with slide-out QWERTY, Windows Mobile 6 Professional, WiFi, biometric security, 2 megapixel primary cam, tri-band HSDPA, and a glorious wide VGA display has been stamped with the feds' seal of approval. Yep, we said <em>tri-band</em> HSDPA, so anyone interested in trying their luck at obtaining an import should have no trouble using it here for fast data. We've seen the G900 variously referred to as a Portege and a Satellite -- here it's just called RG4-E02 -- but frankly, they can call it whatever they like and we'll still be happy campers.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Sorry to break hearts here, but it appears that this particular variant of the G900 isn't even remotely bound for US shores; besides failing to support WCDMA 850 / 1900, it doesn't even offer GSM 850. Our apologies for the mix-up; let's hope the next G900 we see in the FCC offers just a little more juice. The Port&eacute;g&eacute; R400 was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/27/toshiba-readying-ev-do-equipped-portege-r400-convertible-tablet/">peeked</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/07/toshiba-portege-r400-12-incher-revealed/">revealed</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/10/hands-on-with-the-portege-r400-and-uwb-port-replicator/">cuddled</a>, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/12/toshiba-portege-r400-reviewed/">reviewed</a>, but now the time has finally come for you to lay claim to your own. Hitting Toshiba's webstore for a (slightly steep) base price of $3,149, this unit packs an energy-efficient 1.2GHz Intel Core Duo U2500 processor, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vista/">Vista</a> Ultimate, 2GB of RAM, 12.1-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=led-backlit+lcd">LED-backlit LCD</a>, XGA resolution, Intel's GMA950 integrated graphics set, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, fingerprint scanner, gigabit Ethernet port, built-in microphone / mono speaker, headphone out, six-cell Li-ion battery, PCMCIA, and a pair of USB 2.0 connectors. You'll also find a bevy of Microsoft and Toshiba software pre-installed, and while it only tips the scales at 3.79-pounds, you'll have to lug around an external optical drive if you need to spin any discs. But hey, at least you've got a tick to think things over, as it looks like even today's orders won't ship "for one to two weeks."<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tabletpcs/" rel="tag">Tablet PCs</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/29/toshibas-portege-r400-convertible-goes-on-sale/">Toshiba's Portege R400 convertible goes on sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 02:17:00 EST. The Toshiba <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/27/toshiba-readying-ev-do-equipped-portege-r400-convertible-tablet/">Portege</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/07/toshiba-portege-r400-12-incher-revealed/">R400</a> is hot enough on its own, right? Well, what if we told you that Tosh is showing off a prototype version of their Vista SideShow friendly, convertible tablet with an Ultra Wide Band (UWB) wireless dock? Damn straight son, wireless transmission to all your peripherals so you never have to plug your DVI monitor, Ethernet, keyboard, mouse, and other USB peripherals into the laptop when you return to the home or office. Just take a seat and you're in -- simple like pie. The <font class="stdSmall">Toshiba Wireless Port Replicator (as it's officially dubbed) will be available in the second quarter of 2007.
