The ratings are in and ABC's V was the highest rated series premier this season with a rating of 5.0, a 13 share which equals 13.9 million viewers. Of course this doesn't mean that many actually liked it and since we were pretty split here at Engadget HD, we wanted to know what you thought of this new Si-Fi show.<br /><br />

Sure, if you want a great look at nature in HD, Discovery HD Theater has a marathon of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/planetearth"><em>Planet Earth</em></a> going on right now (no seriously, if you haven't seen it, forget the NCAA tournament, Tiger on the links and LeBron's <em>60 Minutes</em> half court shot, click over right now and watch) but brand new this evening <em>Nature </em>on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pbs">PBS</a> has an all new look at active volcanoes with <em>Kilauea: Mountain of Fire</em>. The first of this site filmed specifically for high definition broadcasts, <em>Hawaii Magazine</em> certainly seemed impressed by peeks into the vent from the air, underwater lava flows and hikes into the world's largest and deepest lava tube (whatever that may be) promise to give an all new appreciation of natures power for anyone not already peeping Ian McShane on <em>Kings</em>.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/29/kilauea-mountain-of-fire-gives-an-hd-look-at-the-volcano-tonigh/">Kilauea: Mountain of Fire gives an HD look at the volcano tonight on PBS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 29 Mar 2009 16:46:00 EST. Looking for something watch once the President Obama press conference is over? If CNBC HD+ is in the channel lineup, click over to check out the channel's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/17/cnbc-hd-wont-be-hd/">first true high definition production</a> <em>Cruise Inc: Big Money On The High Seas</em> at 9 p.m. It's the first of several documentaries apparently planned in HD, and not a moment too soon. Taking advantage of the addition space HDTVs can provide (as pictured above) has been nice, but it's good to know we didn't have to go all Jon Stewart on them to get some real HD.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/cnbc/cnbc_cruising_into_high_def_112153.asp">Media Bistro</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/24/cnbc-hd-is-actually-hd-for-the-first-time-tonight/">CNBC HD is actually HD for the first time tonight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 20:50:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/25/the-simpsons-finally-making-high-def-debut/">Switching to high definition</a> isn't the only change for <em>The Simpsons</em> tonight, with the first permanent new intro since its debut in 1989 making its appearance. Fox uploaded the new opener on YouTube in widescreen, but not HD (embedded after the break.) Lined up with the Daytona 500 and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/09/king-of-the-hill-makes-the-high-def-leap/">newly refreshed <em>King of the Hill</em></a> we're liking all the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/07/hdtv-listings-for-may-7-2006/">Sunday HD</a> on Fox all of a sudden.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/15/the-simpsons-goes-hd-tonight-new-title-sequence-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Simpsons goes HD tonight, new title sequence revealed</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fox/" rel="tag">Fox</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/15/the-simpsons-goes-hd-tonight-new-title-sequence-revealed/">The Simpsons goes HD tonight, new title sequence revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 15 Feb 2009 18:03:00 EST. While <em>The Simpsons</em> were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/25/the-simpsons-finally-making-high-def-debut/">announced</a> for HD last week, its Peggy, Luanne, Lucky and the rest of the gang actually going high-def first. For hardcore fans of <em>King of the Hill</em>, you surely noticed that last night's episode was the first ever in high-definition, and we're told that it will be aired in HD from now until eternity. Or whenever the show is canceled, whichever comes first. Any other traditionally SD programs want to follow suit? We're digging this trend!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15776942#post15776942">AVSForum</a>, thanks Michael]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fox/" rel="tag">Fox</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/09/king-of-the-hill-makes-the-high-def-leap/">King of the Hill makes the high-def leap</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 17:32:00 EST. Love it or hate it, 3D has been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/23/3d-is-this-the-resurgence-that-counts/">on a tear in 2009</a>, and it enjoyed the biggest audience yet over the last two nights with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/01/sobes-3d-super-bowl-commercial-available-now-on-youtube-hd/">a quick Super Bowl ad</a> and follow up hour long <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/03/monsters-vs-aliens-trailer-chuck-to-air-in-3d-in-february/">3D episode of <em>Chuck</em></a>, both on NBC. However, given the mixed opinions, and the questionable tech used to bring 3D to homes that aren't really equipped to deal with it, we're not sure if the movement went forward or backwards last night. Our friends at Cinematical and TV Squad have chipped in opinions on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/04/monsters-vs-aliens-3d-promo-gets-detailed/"><em>Monsters vs. Aliens</em> promo</a> (embedded after the break) and special TV event, but what about you? As a glasses-only affair it required an audience a bit more prepared than usual than usual for TV, and there were plenty of chances for problems and misunderstanding. PR reps for theater 3D companies were quick to point out their stereoscopic technology provides much higher quality (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/3d-college-football-is-actually-quite-enjoyable/">we agree</a>) than you saw on NBC, and while that begs the question why bother at all, it seems like the chance to seed the potential of 3D -- even with a subpar anaglyph display -- was too big of an opportunity to ignore.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.aoltv.com/2009/01/30/i-dont-care-what-nbc-is-saying-3d-on-tv-still-doesnt-work/">Read</a> - I don't care what NBC is saying... 3D on TV still doesn't work<br /><a href="http://Poll: Did You Like The 3D Superbowl Movie Commercials?">Read</a> - Poll: Did You Like The 3D Superbowl Movie Commercials?<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/did-nbcs-promotional-shove-help-or-hurt-3d/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Did NBC's promotional shove help or hurt 3D?</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nbc/" rel="tag">NBC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/did-nbcs-promotional-shove-help-or-hurt-3d/">Did NBC's promotional shove help or hurt 3D?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 09:44:00 EST. Yeah, today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/superbowl">big game</a> is but hours away, but if you're itching to put those newfangled 3D goggles to use beforehand, you're in luck. Reindeer has hosted up tonight's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/03/monsters-vs-aliens-trailer-chuck-to-air-in-3d-in-february/">3D SoBe ad</a> on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/YouTube/">YouTube</a> in high-def, and folks with those glasses -- which can supposedly still be picked up at hard-to-miss kiosks in grocery outlets and retail stores if any stock remains -- can tap the read link to have a look right now. Obviously we wouldn't do so if you're not much on spoilers, but we're betting your curiosity is going to get the best of you. Once you've watched, chime in below with your thoughts on the quality. Just in case you haven't seen enough <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/09/50-years-of-nasa-footage-hits-discovery-in-hd-this-summer/">NASA footage in HD</a>, you'll love the latest 35 minutes captured by Expedition 18 Commander Mike Fincke. Said crew member, along with flight engineers Sandy Magnus and Yury Lonchakov, has filmed a high-definition tour of the orbiting complex that will be aired as a special Video File on NASA Television's HD Channel 105 at 1:00PM and 3:00PM CST Thursday and Friday (yes, of this week). Of course, it'll also be made available for SD viewers, but where's the fun in that? So, are your DVRing this or what?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.itwire.com/content/view/22805/1066/">iTWire</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/21/nasa-to-air-hd-tour-of-international-space-station/">NASA to air HD tour of International Space Station</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 21 Jan 2009 23:08:00 EST. Neither Verizon nor Bright House Networks can provide those oh-so-snazzy interactive mix channels like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/15/directvs-2009-inauguration-mix-channel-brings-every-angle-in-hd/">DirecTV</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/17/dish-network-delivers-inauguration-mix-channel-of-its-own-plus/">DISH Network</a> can, but what they -- along with a few other providers, most likely -- <em>can</em> do is provide free access to HBO for a day. This Sunday (that's tomorrow for the continental US, the day after tomorrow for Point Hope, AK, Kihei, HI and surrounding areas), FiOS TV and BHN digital TV subscribers will all be given a fee-free look at HBO's exclusive live broadcast of the "We Are One: The Obama Inauguration Celebration" concert from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Better still, both carriers are providing HD feeds for those looking for the best in clarity (read: you), and those scouting the full lineup of artists and speakers can find just that in the links below. Trust us, this is like a hundred million times better than trying to get within 50 miles of The District this weekend.<br /><br /><a href="http://sev.prnewswire.com/computer-electronics/20090116/NY6006516012009-1.html">Read</a> - Verizon announcement<br /><a href="http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_tv_tvblog/2009/01/all-bright-hous.html">Read</a> - Bright House Networks announcement<br /><a href="http://gadgetress.freedomblogging.com/2009/01/15/time-warner-customers-get-free-hbo-for-obama-inauguration/8724/">Read</a> - Time Warner Cable announcement<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Turns out, HBO's letting anyone with a STB <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/2009/01/07/your-one-choice-to-watch-the-inauguration-ceremonies-hbo/">tune in gratis</a>. Not one to be outdone by its fiercest rival, DISH Network has seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/15/directvs-2009-inauguration-mix-channel-brings-every-angle-in-hd/">DirecTV's Inauguration Mix Channel</a> and raised it free access to HBO's exclusive coverage of the Opening Celebration on Sunday, January 18th. Yep, starting this Sunday (that's tomorrow for those on the right coast), DISH subscribers will be able to tune into HBO's SD and HD slots in order to see a plethora of musical performances and speeches by the likes of Beyonce, Bono, Herbie Hancock, John Legend, Jamie Foxx, Martin Luther King III, Queen Latifa and Denzel Washington. At the strike of midnight on Inauguration Day (January 20th), it'll offer up live feeds of six news networks on channel 100: FOX News Channel (Ch. 205), CNN (Ch. 200), MSNBC (Ch. 209), CNN Headline News (Ch. 202), CSPAN (Ch. 210) and CSPN2 (Ch. 212). Curiously, there's no mention if the mosaic will link to high-def feeds of said news channels, but if so, we'd say DirecTV just met its match.<br /><br />[Image courtesy of <a href="http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/10/27/inauguration.jpg">Swamp Politics</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/satellite/" rel="tag">Satellite</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/17/dish-network-delivers-inauguration-mix-channel-of-its-own-plus/">DISH Network delivers inauguration mix channel of its own, plus more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 17 Jan 2009 02:31:00 EST. The satcaster is implementing its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/directvs-election-mix-channel-brings-maximum-coverage-to-one-pl/">Mix Channel technology</a> once <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/17/directv-keeps-multi-screen-trend-alive-with-wimbledon-interactiv/">again</a> by offering up a 2009 Inauguration mosaic, which will bring together eight live broadcasts and enable viewers to go full-screen with the one they like best at any given moment. Of course, all eight blocks will be provided in high-definition, and it can be seen replacing the News Mix on viewer channel 102 and 352. The action gets going at 10:00AM ET on Inauguration Day.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/satellite/" rel="tag">Satellite</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/15/directvs-2009-inauguration-mix-channel-brings-every-angle-in-hd/">DirecTV's 2009 Inauguration Mix channel brings every angle in HD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 15:33:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Jacksonville/">Jacksonville</a> residents looking for a new take on the evening news can finally see their dreams come true. As of now, WJXT -- an independent station serving the Florida city and its surrounding communities -- is broadcasting its newscasts in high-definition. At first, the noon broadcast will be the only one in HD, though other airings should follow suit in short order. Locals who rely on DISH Network and DirecTV will sadly be unable to enjoy the new look without an OTA antenna, though WJXT vice president and general manager John Rafferty has assured us that its high-def signal will be picked up by both "soon."<br /><br />[Thanks, Eric]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/daytime/" rel="tag">Daytime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/15/wjxt-throws-the-hd-lever-in-jacksonville-florida/">WJXT throws the HD lever in Jacksonville, Florida</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 11:44:00 EST. Hotlanta may be feeling the chill of winter right about now, but those looking for one more choice when it comes to watching the evening news in high-def can rejoice. As of this week, the region's CBS affiliate (WGCL) has converted its newscasts to HD, making it the third in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/27/atlanta-residents-rejoice-local-abc-news-going-hd-today/">Atlanta, Georgia to do so</a>. Also of note, the CBS 46 branding has been trashed in favor of the altogether lovely CBS Atlanta logo you see above, and for those keeping inventory, FOX's WAGA now sits as the only local in the area not broadcasting news in high-definition. For those searching for a few more details on how exactly the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/03/monsters-vs-aliens-trailer-chuck-to-air-in-3d-in-february/"><em>Monsters vs. Aliens</em></a> 3D trailer will be seen on Super Bowl Sunday, you've arrived at the right place. According to a new <em>AP</em> report on the topic, around 150 million 3D glasses will be given away for free at Pepsi / SoBe Life Water displays at 28,000 locations including grocery, drug and electronics stores and big-box retailers -- in other words, you shouldn't have to look hard to find 'em. The three minute promo will utilize Intel's InTru 3D and ColorCode 3-D technologies, which are said to be far superior to the old red-blue Anaglyph system. In fact, those without <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/3D/">3D</a> glasses will still be able to make out what's going on. Oh, and if you were even the slightest bit curious as to how serious <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/14/all-future-dreamworks-animation-movies-to-be-made-in-3d/">DreamWorks Animation</a> is about pulling this off, get a load of this: the outfit's CEO, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/16/dreamworks-ceo-participates-in-live-transatlantic-3d-broadcast/">Jeffrey Katzenberg</a> is calling the stunt "perhaps the biggest media-advertising event in history," noting that it will involve "tens of millions of dollars." Charm City residents refusing to tune into SD news have had their sets locked on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/02/baltimore-md-gets-local-hd-news-courtesy-of-fox-45/">FOX 45</a> for months now, but 2009 is offering the city of Baltimore yet another option. Starting this weekend, WBAL-TV has flipped the high-def switch on its local news, meaning that you can now catch your favorite NBC talking heads in an all new light. So, locals -- are things much improved? Studio shot is after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks, Ryan and Michael]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/04/wbal-tv-switches-on-hd-news-in-baltimore-maryland/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WBAL-TV switches on HD news in Baltimore, Maryland</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nbc/" rel="tag">NBC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/daytime/" rel="tag">Daytime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/04/wbal-tv-switches-on-hd-news-in-baltimore-maryland/">WBAL-TV switches on HD news in Baltimore, Maryland</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 04 Jan 2009 08:40:00 EST. Available on ESPN HD, ESPN360.com and ESPN Mobile TV you can catch the December 13 awards show in a variety of ways, with replays planned for ESPNU. HD's a natural fit, not that we've missed the extra resolution on Lee Corso's face each year, but the inevitable endless highlight reels (and clips of proud, tearful parents and coaches) leading up to the actual award should finally be available in their proper glory. The show kicks off at 8:00PM ET, we guess this puts the first 3D Heisman presentation on the clock.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/espn-hd/" rel="tag">ESPN-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sports/" rel="tag">Sports</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/11/74th-heisman-trophy-presentation-is-the-first-in-hd/">74th Heisman Trophy Presentation is the first in HD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 09:33:00 EST. We mean, it really digs you. So much, in fact, that it has taken to heart all those <em>surely kind</em> letters you've sent in over the past few months regarding high-def news. Starting tonight, The City of Brotherly Love has another place to turn for high-definition newscasts, and that place is NBC 10. Reportedly, the station has been constructing an HD studio for months, and it has just now taken the wraps off of everything. Enjoy, Philly, and let us know if you're pleased in comments below.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nbc/" rel="tag">NBC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/daytime/" rel="tag">Daytime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/10/philadelphias-nbc-10-brings-the-high-def-love-to-its-newscasts/">Philadelphia's NBC 10 brings the high-def love to its newscasts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 17:15:00 EST. So, what? <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/2012/">2012</a> is too close now, so we're moving the target date for all consumer electronics-related estimates to 2014? All jesting aside, a new study from Magna asserts that by the end of 2014, some 44% of US households will have a DVR of some kind. Also by that time, the DVR will be responsible for a 4% erosion in total viewing impressions across all dayparts, but those primetime spots will become that much less important when users can simply make anytime their own personal primetime. The report also expects around 68.8 million homes to receive video-on-demand (up from 40.4 million in Q3 2008), while the number of US domiciles with broadband internet access will rise to 86.2 million from 68.3 million now. That said, we understand that not everyone will be able to jet off to Las Vegas to see his December 6th matchup with Manny Pacquia, but those with AT&amp;T's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Uverse/">U-verse</a> will be treated to The Dream Match in glistening high-def. 'Course, the pricing is apt to make you consider just visiting a bar ($65 for the HD PPV, $55 for the SD PPV), but who knows how inflated that tab could be by the end of the night. Decisions, decisions.<br /><br />[Image courtesy of <a href="http://philippinesfunwall.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/oscar-de-la-hoya-wants-manny-pacquiao-for-last-fight.jpg">PFW</a>, thanks Anthony]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fiber/" rel="tag">Fiber</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sports/" rel="tag">Sports</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/21/atandt-bringing-de-la-hoya-vs-pacquiao-to-u-verse-hd-ppv/">AT&amp;T bringing De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao to U-verse HD PPV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 06:14:00 EST. We can't say we spotted this one in person (sorry, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/18/best-buy-employees-compare-real-store-to-chucks-buy-more/"><em>Chuck</em></a> lost its luster after about six episodes), but we'll still join in the chorus of laughter. The image spotted above was an advertisement for Microsoft's little 'ole operating system, known around the underground as Windows Vista. What you're supposed to see there is "Windows: Life Without Walls," but instead, you're missing the final "s." In fact, Michael Smith points out that most 4:3 set owners actually saw even less than that (think "Windows: Life Without"). The capture was taken from a locally broadcast 4:3 NTSC feed of the show, and amazingly enough, it wasn't the only commercial aired that night with some of the critical information hanging off in no man's land. Have any of you spotted this recently, or was this just a one-time screw up?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nbc/" rel="tag">NBC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/advertising/" rel="tag">Advertising</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/19/windows-commercial-gets-wrong-message-across-on-4-3-sets/">Windows commercial gets wrong message across on 4:3 sets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 15:02:00 EST. WSBT-TV, the area's CBS affiliate, became the first in the region to air its newscasts digitally just days ago, and moreover, the first to broadcast in high-definition. Viewers are being treated to clearer views of their favorite anchors and more information on a wider screen platform, including additional weather data on the margins of their TV screens. The station's news director Meg Sauer has also asked for forgiveness if any glitches crop up due to all the new equipment, but we're sure you'll be willing to do so in exchange for an HD quality broadcast.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cbs/" rel="tag">CBS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/daytime/" rel="tag">Daytime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/18/south-bend-indiana-gets-hd-news-from-wsbt-tv/">South Bend, Indiana gets HD news from WSBT-TV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:45:00 EST. As of this week, the Big Apple's FOX affiliate is finally broadcasting its local news in glistening HD. As tipster Rich so elequotely put it: "There's nothing like seeing how bad a night your favorite news anchor had when tuning in at 5:00AM." Election Night 2008 brought about an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/04/election-08-coming-home-in-hd-like-never-before/">unprecedented amount of HD coverage</a>, and while we're all in absolute agreement that CNN's "holographic" interviews were the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/04/cnns-holographic-freakout-begins-seems-totally-bizarre-and-unn/">comedy for the evening</a>, we're interested on your take on how networks as a whole did with their high-def presentation. Was CBS' polished graphics set enough to overcome those embarrassing audio gaffes? Did ABC / FOX have the edge? Where did you find yourself tuned to most of the night? Drop your vote (hey, there's a concept!) below.<br /><br />

Sure, not every station's pulled out the <em>Star Wars / </em><em>Iron Man</em>-style <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/04/cnns-holographic-freakout-begins-seems-totally-bizarre-and-unn/">holograms</a> for the 2008 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/election">election</a>, but they're all trying to put <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/18/election-08-coverage-to-include-more-hd/">shiny new HD studios</a> to full use and get as many eyeballs as possible until things are decided. NBC &amp; ABC immediately jumped out front at 7 p.m. with data pouring in on the widescreen edges of their HD feeds, with CNN waiting until states were decided to begin updating their lists. ABC's chosen to lean on its touchscreen display and forgo side graphics altogether, while despite Fox's claim as "America's Election HQ", with totally bare shoulders and boring sets, we're pointing our flatscreens elsewhere. PBS, despite airing the clearest, most high quality video available of three old guys at a table, has no slick touchscreens or HD graphics packages to speak of. Think about that as you check out the rest of the screens after the break, and during the next donation drive. <p>If you've been keeping your eyes fixed on CNN as this election unfolds, then by now you've seen Wolf Blitzer doing a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/04/cnns-wolf-blitzer-to-interview-hologram-strategists-on-election/">"hologram" interview</a> with Jessica Yellin. Not only does this technology seem completely creepy, but it's <em>without a doubt</em> one of the most useless and unnecessary pieces of phantasmagoric TV ever enacted. Enjoy some video and two more pics of the weirdness after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/04/cnns-holographic-freakout-begins-seems-totally-bizarre-and-unn/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CNN's holographic freakout begins, seems totally bizarre and unnecessary</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/04/cnns-holographic-freakout-begins-seems-totally-bizarre-and-unn/">CNN's holographic freakout begins, seems totally bizarre and unnecessary</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 19:48:00 EST. As <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/28/dish-network-refuses-to-be-outdone-brings-its-own-2008-election/">election night</a> officially kicks off in just a few hours, the network's Wolf Blitzer will be conducting interviews with faraway strategists not via the traditional two-pane window, but by hologram. Believe it or not, professionals in Chicago and Phoenix will be beamed live to CNN's New York studios in order to give viewers a look at Wolf and a ghostly counterpart. Granted, this is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/08/real-time-3d-hd-teleconference-demo-scheduled/">far from</a> the first <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/27/telstra-shows-off-network-capacity-with-live-hologram-beaming/">holographic</a> / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/16/net-insight-holds-live-3d-telepresence-demonstration-shows-it-o/">3D interview</a> we've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/16/dreamworks-ceo-participates-in-live-transatlantic-3d-broadcast/">seen</a>, but it is rather impressive given the scenario. Now that that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/16/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-fall-hdtv-schedule/">Fall 2008 HDTV schedule</a> is well underway, <em>Sound &amp; Vision</em> has had time to investigate which shows are best for showing off your new flat-panel / surround sound system. Sure, we know you're still interested in those far-fetched "plots" and "story lines," but what about tickling your retinas and eardrums with the best TV has to offer? We'd rather not give away any surprises, but after reading through their top seven, why not chime in below with how you agree / disagree?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/abc/" rel="tag">ABC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cbs/" rel="tag">CBS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fox/" rel="tag">Fox</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nbc/" rel="tag">NBC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/04/the-best-fall-programming-to-dazzle-onlookers/">The best fall programming to dazzle onlookers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 06:52:00 EST. It's one thing to simply fork out some cash for new equipment and pull the lever on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HDnews/">HD newscasts</a>, but Lexington, Kentucky's WTVQ-TV is doing it real big when it takes its local news to high-def this month. Starting on October 30th, not only will locals view the evening news in HD, but they'll see a new anchor team, a new news set, a fresh graphics arrangement and revived vivaciousness all around. We've always heard that going all out was the only way to go -- guess we'll see how the ratings react in around a week.<br /><br />[Thanks, Eric]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/abc/" rel="tag">ABC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/daytime/" rel="tag">Daytime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/26/lexington-kys-wtvq-gets-major-makeover-as-part-of-hd-news-tran/">Lexington, KY's WTVQ gets major makeover as part of HD news transition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 18:55:00 EST. Starting on Sunday, October 26th, WISC-TV will become the first in the region to air all of its regularly-scheduled newscasts in high-definition. Of note, the CBS affiliate has been airing feature stories within its newscast in HD since January of this year, but on Sunday, it will become the first in the area to go wire-to-wire in high-def. The first completely HD newscast will air at 5:30PM on the aforementioned day, and in preparation for the change, the regularly scheduled "News 3 at 5:30" will be preempted for an original special on HDTV and the February 2009 digital television conversion.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cbs/" rel="tag">CBS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/daytime/" rel="tag">Daytime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/wisc-tv-to-finally-deliver-hd-news-in-madison-wisconsin/">WISC-TV to finally deliver HD news in Madison, Wisconsin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 09:11:00 EST. As the US presidential election unfolds on November 4th, DirecTV customers will be able to catch eight feeds of coverage on a single channel alongside a real-time election blog that will "track the announcements and analysis on each channel as votes are counted, exit polling data is evaluated and electoral count projections roll in." The Election Mix Channel will be seen on slots 102 and 352 (for SD and HD, respectively) and will feature feeds from the four broadcast networks, CNN, FOX News, MSNBC and alternating feeds of Comedy Central (when it's doing live election coverage) and BBC America. Users will be able to hover over any of the eight blocks to select audio from each, and you can catch the mayhem beginning at 7:00PM ET on that fateful Tuesday.<br /><br />[Thanks, Bryan]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/satellite/" rel="tag">Satellite</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/directvs-election-mix-channel-brings-maximum-coverage-to-one-pl/">DirecTV's Election Mix channel brings maximum coverage to one place</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 07:50:00 EST. Another first is coming to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/12/wichita-kansas-now-home-to-atandts-u-verse-tv/">Wichita</a>: local news in high-definition. The area's CBS affiliate, KWCH-TV, just began running commercials to get residents psyched up about the impending transition to HD. When it flips the switch sometime later this month, it'll be the first local station in the region to air its newscasts in high-def. Something <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/23/america-finally-claims-100-local-hd-news-broadcasts/">tells us</a> the others won't be too far behind, though.<br /><br />[Thanks, Gabe]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cbs/" rel="tag">CBS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/daytime/" rel="tag">Daytime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/04/wichitas-kwch-taking-local-news-to-hd-this-month/">Wichita's KWCH taking local news to HD this month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 04 Oct 2008 05:44:00 EST. Deciding which channel to catch the Vice Presidential Debate on tonight? <em>Wall Street Journal</em>'s The Numbers Guy points out that CNN's HD feed includes live analyst scorecards on the side of the screen (not included in the SD broadcast). Of course, with somewhat loose interpretations of how or when to score the debates, and a lack of explanation to viewers on what the scores the executive producer admitted there's room for improvement, but it may be worth checking out tonight and during future debates. Flip between six different VP debate HD feeds, or catch <em>Magic's Biggest Secrets</em> on My Network TV? Decision '08 indeed.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/abc/" rel="tag">ABC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cbs/" rel="tag">CBS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fox/" rel="tag">Fox</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nbc/" rel="tag">NBC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/cnn-adds-live-debate-feedback-for-widescreen-hd-viewers/">CNN adds live debate feedback for widescreen HD viewers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 20:34:00 EST. Earlier this year, we heard that the struggling <em>Friday Night Lights</em> series <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/02/season-3-of-friday-night-lights-to-air-on-directvs-the-101-firs/">would return for a third season</a>, but in a rather peculiar way. Now, we finally know the start date for the aforesaid drama. Beginning on October 1st, DirecTV subscribers will be the only ones out there able to catch the third season on the satcaster's own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/The101/">The 101</a>. The partnership was struck in order to keep the lightly watched show from going under prematurely, and for those operating sans DirecTV, you'll just have to be patient until it hits NBC in the coming months. Good luck resisting the urge to torrent -- you know Tim Riggins couldn't.<br /><br />[Image courtesy of <a href="http://www.tvjab.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fnl_cast_1.jpg">TVJab</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/satellite/" rel="tag">Satellite</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sports/" rel="tag">Sports</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/19/friday-night-lights-s3-tackles-directv-on-october-1st/">Friday Night Lights S3 tackles DirecTV on October 1st</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 07:34:00 EST. Multichannel audio is promised (has the tick-tock been remastered?) to go along with the crisp picture, but all that really matters is that September 21, 7 p.m. -- you know where we (and our HDTVs) will be.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cbs/" rel="tag">CBS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/17/60-minutes-pulls-out-the-hdtv-cams-for-obama-and-mccain-sunday/">60 Minutes pulls out the HDTV cams for Obama &amp; McCain Sunday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 17 Sep 2008 19:12:00 EST. This is the best time of year for HD fans, not only are there more HD sports than anyone can possibly watch, but the new fall lineup of shows from the networks are already slowing starting to trickle out. The slow trickle is about to become a full blown blast in the next week or two though, and if you're like us you are using the modern marvel called a digital video recorder to hunt for the next <em>Heroes</em> or <em>Lost</em>. Now even those lucky enough to have a big ol' 1TB disk in their DVR, you will still have to do some leg work to see what's new. Maybe you'll go through who knows how many web pages, or use your TiVo's great guide search; but now thanks to our friend Brent Evans from Geek Tonic, there's a better way. He has done the leg work for us by comprising a very comprehensive chronological list of new shows -- including which are in HD of course -- which makes it super easy to record every new show under the sun in the search for the one new show that might actually earn some precious space or time.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fiber/" rel="tag">Fiber</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ota/" rel="tag">OTA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/satellite/" rel="tag">Satellite</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/primetime/" rel="tag">Primetime</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/16/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-fall-hdtv-schedule/">The ultimate guide to the Fall HDTV schedule</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 18:59:00 EST.
