Last year, a group of disgruntled gamers filed a class-action lawsuit against Sony over its decision to remove the "Install Other OS" feature from its PS3 firmware. Last week, though, their case was dismissed by US District Judge Richard Seeborg, on the grounds that the plaintiffs failed to actually state a claim. In a ruling issued Thursday, Seeborg said he sympathized with the gamers' gripes, but ultimately determined that they had failed to demonstrate any legal entitlement to the feature, thereby neutering their arguments. "The dismay and frustration at least some PS3 owners likely experienced when Sony made the decision to limit access to the PSN service to those who were [un]willing to disable the Other OS feature on their machines was no doubt genuine and understandable," Seeborg wrote. "As a matter of providing customer satisfaction and building loyalty, it may have been questionable." He went on, however, to point out that the users "have failed to allege facts or articulate a theory on which Sony may be held liable" post-PS3 purchase, effectively ending the litigation.

Federal judge dismisses class-action suit against Sony, 'Other OS' feature remains dormant originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 09:57:00 EST. The team at Gitbrew.org have returned Linux to the Cell-based gaming console with OtherOS++, which boasts a number of benefits over Sony's official stab at supporting other operating systems. For one, Linux is no longer relegated to a performance-degrading virtual machine and has full access to the PS3 hardware, and two, it works on both old-school "fat" models and the newer "slim" ones. We warn you, though -- this install is not for the faint of heart, and some older models that use NAND flash instead of VFLASH aren't compatible (check against this list). If you're undeterred, hit up the source link for downloads, instructions, and (most importantly) to stick it to the man.

OtherOS++ brings Linux back to the PS3, taunts Sony originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 May 2011 11:15:00 EST. The 27th annual Chaos Communication Conference already hacked encrypted GSM calls with a $15 cellphone, but there was a second surprise in store this morn -- the souls who unlocked the Nintendo Wii's homebrew potential (and defended it time and again) claim to have broken into the PlayStation 3 as well. Last we left the black monolith, Sony had won a round, forcing the community to downgrade their firmware for any hope at hacking into the console. Well, the newly formed fail0verflow hacking squad says that won't be a problem any longer, because they've found a way to get the PS3 to reveal its own private cryptography key -- the magic password that could let the community sign its very own code.

So far, the team hasn't provided any proof that the deed's been done, but they have provided quite an extensive explanation of how they managed the feat: apparently, Sony didn't bother generating any random numbers to secure the blasted thing. (We don't really know how it works, but we have it on good authority that dead cryptography professors are rapidly spinning in their graves.) The group intends to generate a proof-of-concept video tomorrow, and release the tools sometime next month, which they claim should eventually enable the installation of Linux on every PS3 ever sold. Catch the whole presentation after the break in video form, or skip to 33:00 for the good stuff.

Update: The proof-of-concept vid is a bit underwhelming -- fail0verflow had to SSH into a PS3 over ethernet -- but it's here nonetheless. See it after the break, and find the team's full set of presentation slides at our more coverage link. Sony's disabling of Linux on the PS3 has made many people very angry, some more so than others, but for an enthusiast named madshaun1984 it was something of a call to arms. He didn't file a lawsuit or whine about it in forums -- oh no. He sat down to get XBMC working and has succeeded, albeit slowly. Right now the CellSDK that this build relies upon is not up to snuff performance-wise, so just scrolling through media is somewhat less than fun and you can forget about playing it. But, the hope is to improve that and to turn the PS3 into a proper media-streaming Linux box... so long as you don't update the firmware, anyway. Full instructions on how to do this are at the source link, but be prepared to spend the better part of an afternoon at it if you want to try yourself. For those not ready for that kind of commitment (or anyone who already has the latest firmware) you can just enjoy the video proof after the break.
Continue reading Hacker gets XBMC running on his PS3, tells you how (video)

Hacker gets XBMC running on his PS3, tells you how (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 15 May 2010 10:20:00 EST. When we learned that the Air Force was buying 300 PS3s we knew it could mean only one thing: all-night HAWX LAN party. But, when the order came through for 2,200 more, it seemed something more serious was afoot, and sure enough the armed force that aims higher was aiming to use them as a cluster for high-def video processing. Naturally that's quite dependent on the machine's Linux capabilities, capabilities that Sony has, of course, since disabled. You might think this doesn't matter, since the units will never play games and so don't need the distro-disabling firmware update. But, hardware fails, especially when stacked as close as these units are and, according to the Air Force's Research Laboratory, Sony takes the liberty of applying the latest firmware even to refurb'd units. In other words, this is one cluster that's bound to fragment and not even Louis Gossett Jr. could bring it back together. Dramatic re-enactment after the break.
Continue reading Air Force feels afterburned as Sony clips the PS3's Linux wings

Air Force feels afterburned as Sony clips the PS3's Linux wings originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 13 May 2010 09:41:00 EST. Sony forced PS3 owners into a tough decision with the mandatory 3.21 firmware update: either lose online play, or forgo Linux support. On Tuesday, Anthony Ventura chose door number three -- and filed a lawsuit in California, asking the judge for class-action status. The complaint quotes Sony executives on numerous occasions saying how vital and important the "Install Other OS" feature was to the game console (it's a computer, remember?) and claims breach of contract, false advertising, and several other causes of action against the entertainment giant. Sure, a lawsuit was bound to happen, given the number of angry PS3 owners out there, but here's the thing: there's no telling whether the court will grant a class-action certification here, and even if the case gets that far it's pretty unlikely to force Sony to turn the feature back on -- instead, customers will probably receive a token amount in damages while the lawyers get their full fees. For example, a rare, successful class-action suit against Palm -- filed in 2004 -- got Treo 600 owners only $27.50 in store credit, five years later. Meanwhile, we hear European PS3 owners just have to ask for their money back -- which, we promise you, is the fastest way to put an end to your Linux-based PS3 nightmares. Either that, or just wait for Geohot to make it all better.
Sony taken to court over PS3 'Other OS' removal originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 29 Apr 2010 15:47:00 EST. Admit it, most of you don't use the "Other OS" option on your PS3, do you? That's ok, we don't either, at least not regularly. Nevertheless, it's irksome, nay, vexing that Sony had the audacity to pull it; that feature was part of the deal bargained when we purchased the unit after all. Forum moderator, "lapetus," over at NeoGAF decided to take on the man by invoking European directive 1999/44/EC, a consumer protection law that requires goods to be "fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase." That little tactic earned lapetus a refund of £84.00 from Amazon without physically returning the console even though his (?) PS3 was well out of warranty. Oh just you never mind that Sony's user agreement claims the ability to revise settings and features without limitation to, "prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content, or use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with the PS3 system." In other words, request your refund before installing Geohot's hacked 3.21 firmware.
PS3 owners eligible for cash refund after 'Other OS' removal? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 06:44:00 EST. Just a tad ahead of schedules -- perhaps as a macabre assurance this isn't some April 1st joke -- firmware 3.21 for the PS3 is now being seeded to anyone who tries to log onto the PlayStation Network. As far as we can tell, all the update seems to do is remove the "install other OS" option and kill access to anyone who does have another platform dual-booted. Just a friendly reminder, if you fall into that category, be sure to either backup your partition or wait for Geohot to find a workaround.
In case you hadn't heard, there's a PlayStation 3 firmware update coming this Thursday that'd knock out the "install other OS" option and remove any currently-installed non-PS3 platform. Our guess is it's not going to affect the majority of owners, but the diehard users are certainly up in arms, and no one really likes losing a feature, even if it's rarely used. Leave it to Geohot, then, to right the wrong. Arguably the reason for Sony's reversal (see: PS3 exploit), the famed hacker has published not only a letter of sorrow at the company (unsurprising), but also a call for users not to update. Instead, he claims he will "look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support" and issued a tech-savvy threat about "touching the CFW," much to the company's chagrin (trust us, you don't even want to know what he's talking about here -- far too scary). We wouldn't normally say a war's brewing, but ol' George Hotz has proven himself more than capable at starting something fierce.
Bad news, Linux fans. The older PlayStation 3 consoles are losing one of the features they could tout over their Slim successor. Firmware 3.21 is coming out this Thursday, April 1st, and its major raison d'être is to kill the "install other OS" option. (This is "not an April fools joke," as the PlayStation Europe blog clarifies.) "Security concerns" is the cited reason, although we're sure that doesn't make you feel much better -- no one likes the loss of a feature, even if it wasn't being used. Those who wish to keep Yellow Dog or Fedora running can opt to not upgrade, but skipping out means losing the ability to access PlayStation Network and play games online, among other things. DARPA enthusiasts notwithstanding, we can't say we know many people still running Linux on their console, but if you count yourself among the few and proud, our condolences. Them's the breaks, but hey, at least some of you still have PS2 compatibility.
Older PS3s losing 'install other OS' option in Thursday's firmware 3.21 update originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 28 Mar 2010 21:31:00 EST. Is the N900 the most hacker-friendly phone ever created? All sources are pointing to "yes." Just two short months ago, we saw one determined code monkey turn his N900 into a PS3 controller; today, we're looking at someone who did the exact opposite. If you've memorized the Debian source code and aren't afraid to dabble in the wild and murky world of N900 modding, you too can one day use a spare SIXAXIS controller in order to dictate gameplay on your Nokia handset. All the instructions you need are there in the source link, and for everyone else just looking to have a watch from the sidelines, hop on past the break and mash play.
Continue reading PlayStation 3 controller used for N900 gaming (video)

PlayStation 3 controller used for N900 gaming (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 13 Feb 2010 10:04:00 EST. Early last year, we polled the grand audience and found out just what you liked (and disliked) about Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 for PS3. Fast forward 13 months, and those still waiting on the sidelines have yet another option for jumping in. As of now, Terra Soft Solutions is offering up Sony's 80GB PlayStation 3 with YDL 6.0 pre-installed for $549.95, and yes, that includes the DVDs containing the OS. Interestingly, it seems as if you'll still have to pony up for a component or HDMI cable, but at least the option's there, right?

[Thanks, Fiddlesworth]

Terra Soft offering up 80GB PS3s with Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 pre-installed originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 20:03:00 EST. Those looking to squeeze a bit more utility out of their PS3 need look no further than Mercury Computer Systems, which has just released its MultiCore Plus SDK for Sony's latest console. The kit aims to enable application developers to harness the power of the Cell (relatively) inexpensively, and the firm is marketing the product to research labs, universities, and other businesses that delve into electronic data automation, video compression, and biotechnology. Apparently, the software was designed to work hand-in-hand with Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux operating system, and it can be snapped up now for slightly less than a PS3 itself (in other words, $399 per seat).

[Via TGDaily]
Mercury Computer Systems looses MultiCore Plus SDK for PS3 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 03:12:00 EST. Debian Live is now available as a downloadable ISO for use on Sony's latest console, and while the task may seem a bit daunting to the uninitiated, there's a fairly thorough wiki set up at the site to guide you through the snags and help you get things running smoothly. So if you've got nothing better to do than tinker with an OS on your PS3, be sure to hit the read link, get your download on, and report on back with your tales of success (or failure).

[Via PS3Fanboy]

Yet another Linux option for your PS3: Debian Live originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Jan 2007 09:50:00 EST. Granted, they've made it pretty damned difficult to find the free version online, but supposedly it's a done deal. For the uninitiated, anyone looking for a more refined and pre-packaged approach to getting Linux on their PlayStation 3 should look no further than the Yellow Dog for Sony's officially sanction build; so what we want to know is, for those lucky and brave enough to have a PS3 and try to install Linux on it (respectively), what have your experiences been like with the Dog? Has it been worth your while? We're still holding out until Ubuntu gives us the love we crave. Well, that or until the OSS community get started on making an XBMC-like PS3 interface, since Sony believes all of your home's media should live on the PS3, and not on a media server. Alright, let's not get too worked up here: yes, you can control your PS3 with your Wiimote, no, hell hasn't gone all icy on us yet. See, those spiffy new Bluetooth drivers cropping up for Windows and Mac OS X were bound to show up for Linux sooner or later, and since the PS3 is a certifiable Linux box with some spicy Bluetooth on top, we don't suppose it was all that much trouble getting the Wiimote up and running. Still, the sheer irony is immense, and this seems like a big step for the Wiili folks, who naturally needed working Linux drivers for the Wiimote if their Linux-on-Wii hopes are to come true. What we don't have is any detail on the hack, or a driver download, but we're sure the internets could help you out on those fronts if you're interested in replicating this.

[Via Digg]

Wiimote and PS3 get all chummy thanks to Linux magicks originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 18 Dec 2006 15:15:00 EST. It's starting to look like the greatest enemy to PS3 "security" is the PS3 itself. Thanks to that handy OS named Linux, which conveniently comes prepped for the console, we're already seeing some pretty nifty things being done with the PS3, and now it's being put to good use to siphon data off of those nifty Blu-ray discs. So far nothing more than a straight transfer has been achieved, but it appears the PS3 game file structure is similar to that of the PSP. We're not sure how well on the way this puts us towards the ability to create "backup" discs of PS3 games, but at least it's a start. Oh, and a quick note to the Xbox 360 fanboys: Madden '07 barely uses 7GB of that expansive storage medium of Sony's, so we wouldn't worry about missing out on content with your dual-layer DVDs just yet.

[Thanks, Tam]

ISO images dumped from PS3 Blu-ray discs via Linux originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 18:57:00 EST. If you're still on the hunt for a PS3 (and haven't fell for one of those eBay scams just yet), here's an alternate (and relatively safe) way to finally snag one of your own while earning some bragging rights to boot. If you're not the savviest camper (or thief), but you're packin' the heat when it comes to programming skills, listen up -- the "0wn a PS3 and own it" challenge is in full effect, and the one thing between you and a PS3 is a seemingly simple web hack. If you manage to replace the JPEG image (pictured above) on the linked website while abiding by the site rules (no DOS attacks, etc.), you become the proud owner of a modified PS3 which sports a 160GB hard drive, HDMI cable, Fedora Linux pre-installed, and a free game for when you're not tinkering around in the OS. The site is reportedly running on this very PlayStation 3, loaded up with Fedora Linux and a presumed heavy amount of security around the said picture. So, what are you waiting for? Hit the read link and get to work, because you've only got until "the beginning of January 2007" to pull it off.

[Via Digg]

Hacking your way to a PS3 originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Nov 2006 17:37:00 EST. By now you've no doubt heard about (or possibly even attempted) installing PowerPC builds of Linux on your PlayStation 3, namely Yellow Dog and Fedora. Well, it would appear some clever devil in Japan has managed to shoehorn QEMU (a virtual machine and processor emulator) onto the PS3 as well, resulting in a rather sluggish but no less functional version of PlayStation 3 Windows. Oh, and just in case you're feeling a bit skeptical today, at about 15:00 is where dude boots out of Linux and back into the the PS3 XMB (not that that really proves anything).

[Thanks, Stafford]

PS3 running... Ok, so we're admittedly jealous that not only does this engineering user have a PlayStation 3 in his possession, but has the time to load up Fedora Linux on it while we yearn to just sneak in a few minutes of long-awaited gameplay. While we're sure this hardcore fellow went to great lengths to get his paws on a highly-coveted unit, his endearing patience in firing up a launch title is quite admirable, and he's apparently got Linux not only installed, but up and functioning as well. While we knew that the Yellow Dog variety would be making its way over to Sony's latest console, we're thrilled to see that all the Linux hype has a backbone and a new home to boot. So if you're just dying to see what Fedora Core looks like on a Cell processor, make sure you peep the video after the break.

[Thanks, Klippoth]
Continue reading Fedora Linux up and running on PlayStation 3 (with video)

Fedora Linux up and running on PlayStation 3 (with video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 19 Nov 2006 18:46:00 EST. Sony's Kutaragi gave the rumor mill plenty of fodder by speculating that multiple operating systems were being mulled over for use in the PlayStation 3, and eventually Sony posted an article confirming its interest in both OS X and Linux options. Now it appears that we just might have a winner. Terra Soft's website proudly displays that the forthcoming version of Yellow Dog Linux "supports the PlayStation 3 console," and leaves hints that we might see a few sweet video demonstrations in the near future. While intricate details about the the OS's compatibility with the sure-to-be-scarce console are still few and far between, we're expecting it to drop "in mid-November" to presumably coincide with the November PS3 launch dates -- but at least pulling strings to get your name on a less-than-assuring pre-order list probably won't be necessary here.

[Thanks, Clint]

Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 to run on Sony's PlayStation 3 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 17 Oct 2006 10:55:00 EST.
