Sony has confirmed that the Garnet Red and Azurite Blue PS3 super slims are planned for Europe. Eurogamer reports the 500GB models will launch in mid-February and be bundled with two matching DualShock controllers.Although no official price has been announced, a listing for the console did pop up for €329.95 ($439) on Amazon.de when the hardware was revelaed for Japan earlier this week. We're currently doing our best Oliver impression toward Sony PR to find out if the colors will cruise over to North America.

The probing, ever-busy fingers of iFixit have done it again, this time disassembling the freshly redesigned PS3. Apart from a sticker, a security screw and a tricky power supply, the site dubs the super slim PS3 fairly easy to take apart (and potentially repair). Head over to iFixit for the full teardown. Just be warned that it might not be safe for work; this PS3 gets awfully exposed.

The first special-edition releases of the new toploading PS3 have been revealed for Japan, and they're ... uh ... different, and made in honor of two games that definitely won't have special-edition hardware elsewhere. The Yakuza 5 "Emblem Edition" (above) features gold emblems of the virtual crime families featured in the series around the edges of the 250GB system, and a gold controller to match, along with a special themed USB drive. It's due in Japan December 6.The Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 "Legend Edition" has character art in white along the periphery of the black system, with a controller that is supposed to feature a Big Dipper design, but which looks a lot like it's been pooped on by birds. It'll be released on December 20.

  • Say hello to the super slim PS3

Sony sent us one of the slim(mer) PS3s announced last week during TGS. Now, before you dive into our gallery of images below, we should set the record straight on a few things – specifically, the new disc tray and the lack of a hard drive bay.Update: The new model does indeed support new hard drives. To access the bay, you need to push off the plastic bezel on one of the system's ends. We apologize for the oversight. As for the new disc tray, there's a plastic latch connected to a large plastic bar on the front of the console. Pressing the bar on the right side will turn the console on and off; the left side of the bar will release a latch holding the sliding door, allowing it to slide back and reveal the disc tray. Perhaps the saddest part of all this is how the sliding door doesn't make that "whoosh" sound from Star Trek.In summary: It's indeed lighter and smaller than the previous two PS3 models, and it doesn't make any sounds from Star Trek. None.%Gallery-166513%

  • Did Sony's latest PlayStation 3 redesign just get outed by Brazil's Anatel?

Remember that mysterious new PS3 variant that passed through the FCC not too long ago? Although that listing didn't have photos to confirm a redesign, a new one has hit Anatel (essentially Brazil's version of the FCC) with a quartet of pictures in tow. Specifically, it cites models CECH-4011A, CECH-4011B and CECH-4011C, matching up well with the 4K labeling from the aforementioned FCC visit -- if you'll recall, the current PS3 Slim has a 3K model number. According to Tecnoblog, the the three models point to a shockingly storage-cramped 16GB version, along with 250GB and 500GB variants. While this Anatel document appears to be from Sony, we'd be remiss not to mention that we haven't been able to load the photos as Tecnoblog has. In terms of looks, apart from appearing extra slim -- and decidedly less attractive -- the system notably seems to be rocking a top-loading disc drive (this would be a first for the PS3). For now, we'd advise taking this potential leak with a grain of salt, but rest assured that we'll inform you if we hear anything official from Sony.
