Just days after Sony's Qriocity video-on-demand service went live across Europe, in flies this -- news that the aforesaid service will be spreading its wings and touching the PSP in short order. Word on the street has it that the next PlayStation Portable update (v6.35) will bring along Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity, described as a "new, cloud-based, digital music service from Sony that will give music lovers access to millions of songs stored and synchronized through the cloud." Post-update, users will notice a new icon in the PSP's XrossMediaBar under the 'Music' category, and moreover, the Media Go application for managing PSP downloadable content on your PC will be updated "with enhancements to the user interface and advanced photo editing tools." Sony's remaining mum on a launch date, but the internet is already abuzz about what this may mean for the impending PlayStation Phone. Will Sony finally have a leg-up over iOS with an ingrained unlimited music client? A boy can dream, can't he?

Update: Tipster Isaac spotted the screen above and the one after the break on his PSPgo today. Looks like the launch may be sooner than we'd imagined, eh?
Continue reading Sony PSP to gain unlimited music via cloud-based Qriocity service

Sony PSP to gain unlimited music via cloud-based Qriocity service originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 12:21:00 EST.
Didn't the PS3 just get a firmware update? Something about posting all your hard-earned trophies onto your Facebook page? Yes, that sounds right. If you thought that was a big deal, wait 'til you get a load of this: According to the European PlayStation blog, yet another firmware update is imminent. And this one is pretty sweet -- seems that not only will console owners now be able to play PSP Minis, but if you've already bought a Mini for your portable and wish to play it on your PS3, you'll be able to download it to your console for free. Also included in the 3.15 update is a simplified utility for transferring data from one PS3 to another. Pretty great, right? Gamers, be sure to hit the source link for the deets.

At this point, there have been so many Sonic games on so many different platforms, that you don't really need to run an old school Sega Genesis or Sega CD to play with the blue hedgehog. Need, however, is not what this is about. A fellow calling himself Neon (whose real name is presumably Thomas Andersonn) has put together a proof of concept video to show off a custom PSP Go firmware capable of running Sega CD images. Alas, he's only keen to prove said concept for bragging rights alone, and there are no plans to unleash this unto the retro-loving world, but isn't it enough to know that you can bring back all those memories of an insecure youth whiled away in a poorly lit room with a 12MHz console pushing about 200 pixels in total? Of course it is, check the video after the break.
Continue reading PSP Go turned into a homebrewed Sega CD emulator (video)

PSP Go turned into a homebrewed Sega CD emulator (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 06:03:00 EST. Needless to say, none of this applies to the Americans in attendance, but for international PSP Go buyers looking forward to taking advantage of Sony's PSP Go Rewards program, the always user-friendly DRM seems to be putting a solid kink in those enjoyment plans. According to a growing number of users at the official European PlayStation boards, an error by the name of 80109D53 is causing downloaded titles to not play back on the new handhelds. We're told that Sony is aware of the issue and is toiling away in an effort to fix things, but for now, it seems as if you can sidestep some of the risk by downloading your trio of free titles (which Sony offers if you're an existing UMD owner) directly to the PSP Go rather than sideloading 'em from a PS3. Any others having this issue? Figured out a solution? Shoot your mouth off in comments below.

[Thanks, James]

PSP Go Rewards program hitting DRM-laced brick wall originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 21:50:00 EST. The PSP Go isn't even out yet and Sony's already dishing out the feature updates -- PSP firmware 6.10, announced today, allows the slider handheld to tether to your cellphone over Bluetooth for remote internet access. That's actually a pretty handy feature for a system that relies on network game distribution, don't you think? That's not all, however: all PSPs will get a new XMB feature called SensMe which can generate playlists based on "moods," and the PC-based MediaGo software is being updated as well. Not a bad haul -- we'll let you know when it goes live. SensMe video after the break.
Sony had itself quite a day yesterday, effectively reinvigorating the PlayStation brand with the $300 PS3 Slim and a host of upgrades and updates to the PSP, the PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Network. Now that the dust has settled, we thought we'd throw down a little recap in case you didn't catch it all -- it's clear that the lower-priced Slim has a lot of people talking about finally buying a PS3, but we think things like PSP Minis "snackable" games and the new PS3 firmware 3.0 might be equally important in the long run. Sony just announced a bunch of tweaks and additions to the PS3, PSP, and PlayStation Network at GamesCom, chief among them the new PS3 firmware 3.0. The new code features animated themes with avatars, a new status indicator, a modified friends list, assorted interface changes, tweaks to trophies, and a What's New section that replaces the Information Board. Sony's also bringing the PlayStation Video store to the UK, France, Germany and Spain in November, with more planned expansion in 2010 -- customers will be able to rent and buy films in SD and HD, and while it'll open with just movies, other content will be added as time goes on. The PSP is also getting a Digital Reader comics viewer, with lots of heavy hitters like Marvel on board to provide content -- Marvel says the PSP could become their biggest distribution outlet. We'll see about that -- for now, check a video of firmware 3.0 after the break.

Update: Digital Reader press release after the break.
Continue reading Sony announces PS3 firmware 3.0, European PlayStation Video Store, Digital Reader comics viewer

Sony announces PS3 firmware 3.0, European PlayStation Video Store, Digital Reader comics viewer originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 Aug 2009 13:24:00 EST.
Sony got a lot of things right with its 5.0 firmware update for the PSP, with the PlayStation Store and its direct downloads making a long awaited appearance, but it looks to have caused a bit of a problem for folks with high-capacity Memory Sticks -- namely, it was reporting that 8GB or 16GB cards are full when, in fact, there's plenty of free space left on 'em. Ever the one for a do-over, Sony now says that it's aware of the problem and that the 5.01 firmware update will sort everything out when it's released "soon."

[Via PSP Fanboy]

"Soon-ish" has turned to "now-ish." PSP owners eager to get their minds into the PlayStation Network (and thus, the PS Store) right on their handheld can now do so... right after they suck down the freshly released firmware 5.0, of course. Aside from the obvious changes, the PlayStation format software can now be output in full-screen size on a connected device, the sleep timer feature can now be used under [Music], the system automatically reverts to USB mode when a USB cable is connected and the [Original] theme has been redesigned. Get it while the gettin's good.

Sony pushes out firmware 5.0 for PSP originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 11:00:00 EST. Good news, PSP fans -- the PlayStation Store is closer than ever to hitting your handheld, and we've got the video to prove it. Sony has hosted up a clip to give us all a better idea of what firmware 5.0 has in store for the PSP, and while there aren't any real surprises, it's always good to get a sneak peek. We're told that users will soon be able to create an account and access the PlayStation Network right on the PlayStation Portable, and the PS Store access is the same as on the PS3. Enough chatter -- give the video a look in the read link.

Video: PSP surfs over to PlayStation Store via firmware 5.0 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 16:00:00 EST. That'll bring with it the addition of Google search directly form the XMB interface, which Sony says "replicates the Google Internet search experience." Apart from that somewhat notable upgrade, the only other new feature they're talking about at the moment is the ability to change the viewing speed during playback of videos stored on a Memory Stick. Not exactly the upgrade we would have guessed for a milestone like 4.00, but we can always hope Sony has a couple of surprises up its sleeve.

PSP firmware 4.00 due "soon," adds Google search to XMB originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 16 Jun 2008 16:09:00 EST. The last round of PSP firmware updates brought Skype support, but it looks like 3.95 isn't nearly as exciting: Sony's added in reconfigurable button mapping to PS1 emulation, and made it so that you can choose to either shut down your PS3 or leave it running when you're done with a remote play session. That's about it, but we know you're all compulsively checking for the update now anyway.

[Via Boy Genius]

PSP firmware 3.95 hits the tubes originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 16:42:00 EST. As if the inclusion of Blu-ray's BD-Live interactivity and the removal of the 2GB DivX and WMV file-size cap wasn't enough, PCWorld says that you can also expect the introduction of portable copy. With it, users will be able to copy a PSP formatted (and DRM'd) version of the film directly to their PSP -- no UMD required. Right, just like we saw demonstrated live back at CES in January.

Update: There's a rumor that Sony's portable copy would transcode any Blu-ray film into a PSP version. That's not how we understand it. The firmware update would just allow the PS3 to "see" the portable copy already burned into some Blu-ray discs and then make it available for transfer to your PSP. Think Digital Copy for Sony's gear, not Apple's.

Update 2: Sony just pinged us to say that Portable Copy won't be coming with the 2.20 release -- bummer. We'll be waiting, guys.

[Via QJ.net]
Filed under: Gaming, HDTV, Portable Video

PS3 2.20 update to offer portable copy of Blu-ray films to PSP? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 24 Mar 2008 02:07:00 EST. Well you knew it was coming. That PSP hack we told you about a few weeks ago has hit the interblogs, and we predict all hell will be breaking loose any moment. Un-retired homebrew mastermind Dark_AleX has come up with a little number called Timemachine, which is capable of spinning your PSP back to all sorts of crazy firmwares at the touch of a button. We know you can hardly stand finishing this post due to excitement, so... get out of here and grab it!

[Thanks, Craig]

PSP super-hack hits the internet originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 16 Feb 2008 06:10:00 EST. That new PS3 firmware that just dropped has a little more going for it than just DivX and WMV support -- Sony's enabled PSP Remote Play of PS1 games from a PS3, no matter whether they're downloaded from the PSN Store or the actual physical games inserted in the PS3's drive. Our peeps at PSP Fanboy tested it out and found it worked great with both a downloaded copy of Wild Arms and the disc of Metal Gear Solid. This means you could theoretically leave all those pesky UMDs at home and play games from anywhere in the world with a net connection -- as soon as Sony gets some more PS1 games online.

[Via Joystiq]

PS3 firmware 2.10 allows Remote Play of PS1 games originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 17:01:00 EST. Word from Sony Japan says that they've got a 3.80 firmware update for their hot selling PSP in the chute. Scheduled for release on the 18th, the new code brings the following enhancements:

Streaming Internet Radio player

Video scene search

RSS now supports OPML and pictures

PSP-2000 owners with 1Seg tuners can use an EPG to schedule Japanese mobile television recordings

PlayStation Spot now available at BB Mobile Point (Japan only)

Together that makes for a decent point update for the holidays, eh?

[Via Playstation.com]

PSP 3.80 update brings streaming audio, video scene search, and OPML support: December 18th originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 03:12:00 EST. This admission is confusing for a couple of reasons: for starters, Sony originally underclocked the PSP in order to increase the stated battery life of the console. Does that mean they'll be forced to decrease the stated battery life, so as to avoid false advertisement? It's also rather odd that developers are only now being granted access to the extra MHz oomph, prompting mutterings of a new PSP model which -- as one Joystiq commentator points out -- could take as long to appear as games that take full advantage of the 333MHz clockspeed. Or, maybe this upgrade simply enabled the PSP to cope with all that "remote play" malarkey that 3.50 enabled. That would be the logical assumption.

[Via Joystiq]

PSP clockspeed upped to 333MHz after 3.50 firmware update originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 23 Jun 2007 14:04:00 EST. That, coupled with the latest PS3 firmware update, means you've just scored "Remote Play" functionality -- access to videos, music, and pictures on your home PS3 running 1.80 -- over the Internet. In other words, you can stream media but can't actually play games remotely. The update also includes an RSS Channel Guide but we know it's the remote play you want. The new firmware should already be available via your PSP's Network Update option even though many of Sony's download sites are still pegged at version 3.40.

[Via Impress and CVG]

Read -- Japan release
Read -- US release

PSP 3.50 firmware available: "Remote Play" over the Internet originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 31 May 2007 04:26:00 EST. Another PlayStation 3 firmware update, another list of issues. Unfortunately, this seems to be somewhat of a recurring theme, and while users may not have found issues with last month's refresh, the v1.7 isn't as kind. Reportedly, the latest update enables the PS3 "to play PSOne titles that are already saved on your PSP," but numerous sources are suggesting that the feature, um, doesn't work. On a lighter note, PSOne and PS2 dual shock controllers will now shake, rattle, 'n rumble when connected to your PS3, and those with PSPs sitting around can also hit up v3.4 (required for the PSP-to-PS3 playback) on their handheld machine. So, dearest readers, we'll point the question at you: is your recently update PS3 playing nice with those PSOne selections?

[Via Joystiq, thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sony ups PlayStation 3 firmware to v1.7, PSOne titles not faring so well originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 09:30:00 EST. We were never ones to stand in the way of excessive format support, and never ones to accuse Sony of such a deed, but it appears they're feeling generous this week, with the brand new range of 720 x 480, 352 x 480 and 480 x 272 playback resolutions of MPEG-4 AVA (H.264) video that can be yours with the new 3.30 firmware update. The update also improves PSone performance with a menu option to increase disk dreading speed in exchange for better load times and a little bit of instability. Finally, Sony is tossing in thumbnail support for video and RSS feeds, another welcome improvement. Not bad at all for a 0.1 update, but we're still holding out for PS3-free PSone downloads.

PSP firmware hits 3.30, with bigger vids and better PSone originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 28 Mar 2007 12:55:00 EST. After years of acting as the mortal enemy of PSP users the world over, Network Update is finally giving back to the community with this latest hack, which allows you to use the nefarious bit of software to update your homebrew-happy Dark_Alex firmware. Of course, to pull it off you'll have to install a plugin from Xandu and Team 280, which involves fiddling with your BIOS and possibly bricking your system, and apparently the plugin is only working with about 2/3 of users so far, but we deem those risks a small price to pay for the sort of moral triumph involved in this hack of hacks.

[Via PSP Fanboy]

Oh the irony: use Sony's Network Update to keep your homebrew fresh originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 15 Feb 2007 18:45:00 EST. Now, just a few days later, it's here. The update from 3.03 enables MPEG-4 AVC video streaming to your PSP just as long as you own Sony's latest LocationFree base station. Don't have one, eh? Ok, then this update also extends support for PLAYSTATION(R)Network titles and adds a new dynamic normalization setting to better control music and other audio sources with varying output levels. It also packs a new "conserve memory" mode for the web browser to view a page with more information but with a potential decrease in image quality (presumably due to compression) when enabled. With the 3.03 downgrader just launched, you really have to ask yourself if the 3.10 firmware update is worth it or whether you'd be happier with the homebrew-friendly 1.50 firmware... and possibly a bricked PSP? Besides, word on the street is that 3.10 is already decrypted with a custom firmware release not far behind.

[Via PSP Updates, Thanks cyanide]

PSP firmware 3.10 is out originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 Jan 2007 03:32:00 EST. Amidst the rumors afoot of the new PSP v3.0 firmware hitting the 'net, PSPFanboy has called out this sketch photograph of what purports to be a letter from Sony and a UMD, and further, commenters in the MaxConsole forums mostly seem to agree with this debunking as well. Both cite the fact that Sony is unlikely to beta test firmware and further why they'd release them on a UMD instead of just a download. (Why? How's about because they don't want the file getting traded around the internet's seamy underbelly.) Nevertheless, this "v3.0" purports to have support GIF, MOV, WMV and FLV files, and would finally allow for PSOne emulation, all of which sounds about right. Still, we're hoping Sony will likely make that PSOne emulation available sooner than later, given that the homebrew community has already beat 'em to it.

[Via PSPFanboy]

PSP v3.0 firmware released in beta? And for you überfans, you'll probably want to know that according to QJ.net: "This application runs in 'User Mode,' but kernel mode will be achievable on all firmwares except 2.80." We'll give it a spin and report back soon with our findings.

[Thanks, Crome T.]

Update: Oh yeah, this thing works alright. It works so well ou don't even need to actually load the image on 2.8 -- just scroll down to it, and the thumbnail read takes over the homebrew hack. At a seminar called PSP University (man, we sure wish we could have spent our college years at that institution), company execs confirmed that the portable console will indeed work as a remote for the PS3, and that the upcoming firmware update will support RSS video feeds for the built-in web browser. Furthermore, Sony is apparently in talks with wireless providers to provide more Nintendo DS / Wayport-like hotspots for online gaming, and is also looking at ways to bring downloadable movies to PSP owners -- which sounds to us like another foot in the grave for the almost-dead UMD. Not all the news here is good, however, as those folks expecting a Sony-branded keyboard for their console will likely be in for a disappointment; in fact, the company has no plans whatsoever to improve text entry on the PSP at all. Other new info centered around games and demos, and since that's not really our bag, we'll leave those details to other fine publications like Joystiq and PSP Fanboy.

[Via PSP Fanboy]

Future PSP plans revealed at Comic Con originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 23 Jul 2006 21:45:00 EST. So if you made the "mistake" of upgrading your PSP to firmware version 2.5 or 2.6 just to find out that your precious homebrew would no longer load, it seems you now have a questionably-legal way to downgrade back to version 1.5 and all the emulation fun that goes along with it. Several forums dedicated to Sony's portable console are reporting that hackers using the handles Dark_Alex and Hitchhikr have succeeded in creating a workaround that exploits files from the 1.5 updater to overwrite the current firmware, although owners of so-called "TA-082" PSPs are warned not to attempt the procedure unless they fancy a bricked device. Furthermore, since you're required to either download the necessary 1.5 swag or get it from a friend, you're probably breaking some anti-piracy laws here, so of course we can't put our stamp of approval on this hack. That's all for now, but the battle between Sony and the homebrew community is far from over, so keep your eyes peeled for the next installment in this exciting saga.

PSP firmware versions 2.5 and 2.6 now downgradeable originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 02 Jul 2006 16:35:00 EST. Even worse, files that you had previously recording using your Memory Stick-equipped Neuros will nolonger work once you upgrade to 2.7. For now, Neuros is taking a three-pronged approach to the problem: they're workingon a firmware update of their own for the Recorder 2, attempting to convince Sony to adjust their code in futureupgrades, and, least helpfully, recommending that their customers avoid making the move to 2.7. Also, the companyclaims to be working on a solution that, at the very least, will allow those folks who insist on upgrading to converttheir old recordings into a 2.7-friendly format.
Filed under: Gaming, Peripherals, Portable Audio, Portable Video, Storage

Neuros Recorder 2 incompatible with PSP 2.7 firmware originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 May 2006 13:02:00 EST. As a bit of surprise, Sony also threw in support for the AAC audio format playback -- hey, they did co-create it. We'll just have to hold tight for a US-bound release which should drop within the next few days, or weeks, or you know, whenever Sony feels like it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: US release is up, here we go!
