It may not be the first console we've seen modded and squeezed into portable clothing, but we've got to admire the sheer pluck of cramming all the GameCube's goodnesss into PSP hardware. Modder Ashen, also responsible for the stockier GameCube Fusion, has managed just that, with some heavy-duty adjustments and modifications. The Fusion Micro is a fair bit chunkier than the original PSP, mainly due to the fan and heat sink behind all that busy hardware. Other modifications include an extra analog stick on the right to mimic the GameCube controller and two card slots for games and emulation. Despite this impressive engineering, however, it won't stand up to extensive plays; this unholy union of Nintendo and Sony can only squeeze out about two hours of gaming from its 5000mAh battery. Click on after the break to see Zelda in action, alongside a full break-down of the controls and modifications.
It looks like our favorite PSP Fanboy, Obiwan222222, is up to his old tricks once again, and his latest video shows that he has finally eliminated the lag problem that plagued his first attempt to play Wii on a PSP four years ago. Using a Wii emulator on a PC, some custom firmware, and a program called PSPDisplay, he has managed to stream video and sound to his PSP Go in real time. He also mapped the Wii controls (Wiimote waving excluded, we presume) to the handheld to complete the full Wii-on-PSP gameplaying experience. To see the slick mod in action, check the video after the break.
Continue reading Lag-free Wii on PSP episode II: Mario Kart strikes back

Lag-free Wii on PSP episode II: Mario Kart strikes back originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Jan 2011 22:47:00 EST. These days, it's the Pandora making waves in the world of handheld emulation, but GamePark's GP2X could arguably be credited with starting the whole phenomenon. John Grayson recently decided that the original simply wasn't keeping up with the times, however, and decided to swap out a joystick for a more traditional D-pad. Moreover, he yanked those weak AA batteries and shoehorned a pair of PSP Li-ion cells in there instead, boosting his SNES play time to just over four hours on a full charge. Thankfully for you, neither tweak seems all that difficult to implement, and the sub-10 minute clip waiting after the break does a rather outstanding job of giving you the play-by-play. So yeah, scram!
Continue reading GP2X gaming handheld modded with D-pad, PSP batteries (video)

GP2X gaming handheld modded with D-pad, PSP batteries (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 20:49:00 EST. Sure, the PSP is still a mighty attractive piece of hardware. "Handsome," you might say, but that heart-pounding allure is all but gone these days. While we wait a few more years for Sony to rectify that with a PSP 2, we can drool over another mod by "f00 f00." This time he's managed to squeeze a working VU Meter onto the back of the ever-moddable machine. Sure, it's not a revolution in the world of PSP hacking, but it's impressive and somehow comforting in its own we-guess-the-PSP-is-still-pretty-cool sort of way. Video is after the break.
Continue reading VU Meter finagled into a PSP, reminds us of a time when the PSP was sexy

VU Meter finagled into a PSP, reminds us of a time when the PSP was sexy originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 06 Mar 2010 20:38:00 EST. At this point, there have been so many Sonic games on so many different platforms, that you don't really need to run an old school Sega Genesis or Sega CD to play with the blue hedgehog. Need, however, is not what this is about. A fellow calling himself Neon (whose real name is presumably Thomas Andersonn) has put together a proof of concept video to show off a custom PSP Go firmware capable of running Sega CD images. Alas, he's only keen to prove said concept for bragging rights alone, and there are no plans to unleash this unto the retro-loving world, but isn't it enough to know that you can bring back all those memories of an insecure youth whiled away in a poorly lit room with a 12MHz console pushing about 200 pixels in total? Of course it is, check the video after the break.
Continue reading PSP Go turned into a homebrewed Sega CD emulator (video)

PSP Go turned into a homebrewed Sega CD emulator (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 06:03:00 EST.
As you'd expect, as soon as the PSP Go hit the shelves the homebrew community came out in force, looking to see which of its fave hacks and exploits might have made the trip from the original PSP to its UMD-less brethren. And here we are, with two videos posted by YouTube member Freeplay offering us tantalizing proof that indeed, at least one has. Of course, the whole thing is pretty rudimentary, the result of exploiting a known bug in an existing PSP game (which this particular hacker is remaining tight-lipped about rather than see Sony patch the thing). Karl B., who helped us to this one, provides a caveat: "It's user-mode only, meaning no flash modification, no piracy, no advanced custom themes, no plug-ins -- none of that." All the same, it does our inner geek a sliver of hope, doesn't it? Who knows what it is about the PSP that engenders such a loyal following of hackers -- both on the hardware and software side. Some of the hardware hacks we've seen are no doubt more impressive than others, but they're all united in a common disregard for warranties and for the most part a deep affection for LEDs. The first PSP Go mod we've seen, done up by roro3030 over at AcidMods, keeps things simple with some strategic, tasteful white LED placement. It's all internally powered and pretty seamless, and provides a nice jumping off point for a community that will be no-doubt eager to consume the PSP Go as a new challenge -- even if the rest of us are busy making frowny faces at that endlessly derided price tag. Video of the lit-up Go is after the break.
Continue reading PSP Go scores its first mod job, a handful of white LEDs find a new purpose in life

PSP Go scores its first mod job, a handful of white LEDs find a new purpose in life originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 03 Oct 2009 16:21:00 EST. Okay, so there's at least a sliver of a chance French modder Flasheur got his inspiration from an eerily similar mod last year that involved Sony's PlayStation Portable and an original DualShock controller, but hey, progress is progress. This time around, we're looking at a rather dashing blue PSP and a DualShock 2, and while the actual modding process looks to have taken a different route (three connections on the rear versus one on the side), the end result is the same. Bliss. Pure bliss. Hop on past the break for an entirely-too-lengthy video demonstrating the hack in action, and hang tight for a DualShock 3 iteration to surface in 5, 4, 3...

Depending in your level of geekness, an extravagant mod can be pretty cool. And arcade consoles are damn near always really cool. But making a stand-up console game out of your beloved Nintendo DS? That is pretty amazing. And throwing in a Sony PSP for good measure -- well, that might just elevate your project to a work of art. We don't have too many technical details on this bad boy (after all, the hacker is in Japan -- and there is a bit of a language barrier) but you we think the video of the thing really says it all -- if not in so many words. Peep it for yourself after the break.

We've seen our share of PSP mods in the past -- it sure seems like everyone has an opinion on how to improve the thing. Acidmods.com member Folklord36's innovation has been to place the device in a clamshell scrounged from a Joytech Visor. But the pièce de résistance? The working keyboard, which once belonged to an Xbox 360 Chatpad. This is a hack in progress, so we can expect to see this guy become even more refined in the near future. That said, there's been lots of work done here: speakers moved, LEDs installed in speaker holes and triggers, and of course the case itself. Kudos, our man. Kudos.
Sure, the catalog of compatible games hasn't been as hefty as we'd like, but Sony has done quite a bit right with its PlayStation 3 / PSP Remote Play feature. Modder Dashhacker (with special thanks to noted PSP hacker Dark_AleX, among others) has released Open Remote Play v1.1 beta, which lets you take that same Remote Play experience onto your Windows PC or Intel-based Mac. The caveat here is that you'll still need a PSP handy to set up the application, so don't go thinking you can bypass the portable altogether. The OS X version apparently works well, but Windows users may ample bugs -- it is beta, after all. We haven't had a chance to try it ourselves yet, but don't let that stop you from beating us to the punch -- just let us know what you think. Alternatively, you can peruse video of it in action after the break.
The intersection of PSP 3000 and Hack St. has thus far been a pretty lonely little place, so we're pleased to announce that the ChickHEN project is definitely gaining some momentum. According to one extra special YouTube video, hacksters are now able to run the TIFF exploit and boot into a homebrew enabler environment on a PSP 2003 and a PSP 3000 running 5.03 firmware. The code is seen surviving a reboot, and both the system software and MAC address can be changed. While not ready for prime time yet, this does pave the way for emulators, PSP uCLinux, and all of those other things that keep all you homebrew fans happy at night. Video after the break, if you dare.

Not all input devices are created equal. Some of us long for that old coin-op console joystick every time we bring up GalagaREMIX on the iPhone, while others can't imagine engaging in a first person shooter without the aid of his or her trusty mouse. To that end, PSP hacker TokyoDrift (not his / her real name) has wired an old PS2 mouse into his portable's serial port, by way of an ATMEL ATmega8 chip-sporting breadboard. The various PSP buttons can be mapped to the mouse's buttons or scroll wheel, and scaling and sample rates are adjustable. We know there are plenty of you out there that can't wait to try this one out for yourself -- so hit the read link, peruse the forums, and get inspired.
There's seamless, and then there's Foo's PSP mod. Easily one of the most remarkably clean gaming mods we've seen to date, this here hack involved an old socket originally intended for a cellphone, steady hands and an unwanted Super Nintendo controller (we're simplifying things, but work with us here). In the end, the mod left a nearly-flush port on the rear of the handheld where a hacked SNES controller could be plugged in for input, and better still, the connector doubled as a PSP kickstand. The whole concept was conceived after someone with limited use of one hand contacted Foo for help; needless to say, this workaround now has that individual in business. Hop on past the break to see it in action.

[Via Hack-A-Day]
Continue reading Video: PSP beautifully modded to accept SNES controller

Video: PSP beautifully modded to accept SNES controller originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 09:02:00 EST. Some dedicated hackers have finally managed to get the PSP and Microsoft's Xbox 360 Chatpad typing. There are still a few kinks to smooth out, but the hard part seems over, with l0rdnic0 managing a tiny bit of soldiering using a PSP remote cable and some software from the Open Keyboard Project. It's all still pretty nerdy at the moment, and we're still miffed at that Logic 3 getting cancelled way back when, but we suppose this will have to do.
Continue reading PSP and 360 Chatpad are a match hacked in heaven

PSP and 360 Chatpad are a match hacked in heaven originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 07 Sep 2008 02:54:00 EST. A certain jube808 has launched a quixotic quest to add a myriad of features to the PSP that he believes should've been there from the start, including beefed up battery life, a better control pad, and touchscreen support. Think what you will of his aims, he certainly seems to have some hardware chops, as he's got a touchscreen up and running on the handheld. So far he's just got a proof of concept keyboard, which works with a finger or a stylus, but the hope is to provide full touchscreen support for homebrew gaming. Let us know how that goes, jube. Videos are after the break.

[Thanks, Craig]
Continue reading Man inexplicably brings touchscreen to the PSP

Man inexplicably brings touchscreen to the PSP originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Aug 2008 22:55:00 EST. Call it off Sony, no need to throw any precious man hours into making your perennially #2 handheld into some sort of amazing featurephone hybrid, some hacker has already done it for you. It seems a bit of a crime against the PSP's aesthetics, but apparently some folks out there really, really want to do PS1 emulation right. Acid Modder "Electro" managed to finagle L2 and R2 buttons onto his PSP. He rates his hack a 4 out of 5 difficulty level, which basically means we aren't going near this one, but if you know you way around a soldiering iron, his tutorial is fairly detailed. You'll end up with some pretty tiny buttons up top, but it sure beats mapping those L2 and R2 to the analog stick or something even more convoluted.

PSP L2 and R2 button mod ain't pretty, gets the job done originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 14 Jun 2008 13:46:00 EST.
It's not the first time we've seen a controller hacked for use with the PSP, but this mod by Acidmods member Blizzrad takes things a bit further than most, with it relying entirely on hardware modifications in order to work, meaning it can be done on any PSP regardless of the firmware. It's also one of the cleanest-looking mods we've seen to date, with the only evidence of tampering on the PSP itself being a discreetly placed controller connector right above the power switch. Of course, that also means it's considerably more difficult for most of us to do ourselves, but we can at least get a glimpse of what's possible courtesy of the video after the break.

Been longing for a second analog stick on your PSP? Modder LordNico's got you covered with the Razor X (seriously, where do these guys come up with their names?), a user-installable analog stick that appears to mimic the functions of your standard four button pad. (In other words, getting the games to take advantage of the controls is another matter entirely.) Apparently details of the mod will be released soon enough for those brave enough to consider relocating their power switch to the start button -- yikes.

PSP slim modded for dual analog sticks originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 30 Mar 2008 22:38:00 EST. Well you knew it was coming. That PSP hack we told you about a few weeks ago has hit the interblogs, and we predict all hell will be breaking loose any moment. Un-retired homebrew mastermind Dark_AleX has come up with a little number called Timemachine, which is capable of spinning your PSP back to all sorts of crazy firmwares at the touch of a button. We know you can hardly stand finishing this post due to excitement, so... get out of here and grab it!

[Thanks, Craig]

PSP super-hack hits the internet originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 16 Feb 2008 06:10:00 EST. PSP modder extraordinaire PvP_LostKnight's latest creation freed his PSP from the shackles of pricey Memory Sticks, at the cost of aesthetics. The internal USB mass storage mod packs a flash drive inside the PSP, and includes a PCB board that allows the drive to act as the USB host, since the PSP only works in USB slave mode. PvP is otherwise short on details, but we're sure PSP-mutilating instructions will be popping up soon enough.

PSP internal USB mass storage mod ain't pretty, but all the gigabytes are originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 05 Jan 2008 20:32:00 EST. Using nothing more than a little fine soldering, it is possible to get your PSP to accept the data output from 3rd party GPS receivers from Holux, among others. Like a lot of past PSP mods, this probably isn't one for mere mortals: you'll have to have a heavy dosing of leet skill to pull this one off, and be able to understand the gobbledegook that the custom executable throws up -- although it will apparently work with Map This, a third party GPS and Map app for the PSP. Nevertheless, it's all there on the read link, so check it out if you dare.

[Thanks, Wraggster]

PSP hooked up to third party GPS receivers originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 21 Oct 2007 11:21:00 EST. A hacker called "AhMan" has created a software mod that enables two PSPs to play PSOne games over an adhoc WiFi connection, although apparently this software is in early development -- really, when isn't this kind of hack? For now the evidence is a YouTube video showing a pair of PSPs playing synchronized two player PSOne games, so we'll have to give them to benefit of the doubt that it's actually legit. If it is, you should be able to procure the software required within a reasonable amount of time: if you're willing, of course, to jump through the usual series of firmware related hoops to get there.

Multiplayer PSOne gameplay emulated over WiFi-linked PSPs originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 23 Sep 2007 08:27:00 EST. Apparently, a PSP peripheral manufacturer called Neo has come up with a novel -- if somewhat useless (currently, at least) -- add-on for the handheld game system: a motion sensor. It's unclear right now what the possible uses for the sensor might be, and frankly, if it's something like an accelerometer, or a light sensor, or some other, cooler, more funky sensor we haven't thought of yet. There is one thing we can tell you for sure: it won't work on your PSP slim. Apparently, the device is aimed at home-brewers and DIY'ers -- and we're pretty sure they'll find something interesting to do with the thing. The company says it's available now, but we couldn't locate the little guy, or its price... so good luck.

[Via MAXCONSOLE]

Neo's new PSP motion sensor originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Sep 2007 18:24:00 EST. It's not the world's most complicated hack, but you know how we love a good inter-console romance: Jay over in the MaxConsole forums managed to link up a 360 controller with a modded PSP, using a little homebrew magic and the Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver. The instructions aren't exactly clear, but it doesn't look like it's that hard to get going -- and you'll be way ahead of all those suckers waiting for that SIXAXIS PSP dock to finally hit. Those of you aching to pull open your PSP and do a little modding but afraid to void your warranty -- or worse, brick your baby -- will want to check out the Virtual PSP Modder software from AcidMods. The Windows tool allows you to practice taking a PSP apart, look at the inside at up to 5X resolution, poke around with a virtual screwdriver and tweezers, tinker with the LEDs, apply random mods to see what works, and more -- all without having to crack open your actual, working PSP. Or course, there's no PSP emulation, so you can't play any games, and you'll have to somehow translate what you do on the screen to real life at some point, but hey -- even Ben Heck had to start somewhere. Check out a fairly boring video of the software in action after the break.
Continue reading Virtual PSP Modder lets you try before you hack

Virtual PSP Modder lets you try before you hack originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 08:37:00 EST. While there may be one very obvious Sony gaming peripheral that's screaming out for a rumble feature, that hasn't stopped modders from looking at adding the functionality to other Sony gadgets. A modder by the handle of FOO-f00 has given the PSP a basic rumble feature through a bundle of wires and circuitry that somehow translates the speaker volume into a signal that a motor can use. FOO-f00 made it so it only activates once a high enough pitch is reached, but we'd imagine the result is far from a perfect rumble feature. Still, the project is very much a proof of concept: and an awesome concept at that.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
Continue reading Mod adds rumble to PSP

Mod adds rumble to PSP originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 09:36:00 EST.
While it may not be to everyone's taste, this one-of-a-kind God of War PSP is certainly an impressive bit of console modding, boasting not just a spiffy paint job, but a few additions that dig into the PSP itself. Those include a red acrylic window on the rear of the unit that'll let you see the UMD spinning, as well as some red LEDs that light up the PSP's two shoulder buttons (head on over after the break for some more pics). Only the most die hard God of War fans need apply here though, as last we checked the bidding was around the $1,200 mark. On the upside, 15% of the final sale price will go to the Child's Play charity, and you'll also get that classy velvet-lined case to display your new prized possession in.

[Via PSP Fanboy]

After nearly a year of playing cat-and-mouse with Sony's legal and dev teams, it looks like the heat was too much for Dark-AleX, the modder behind a couple (in)famous PSP cracks, including the "run any PSX ISO" 3.02 firmware and the bust-it-wide 3.10 "Open Edition." In a terse posting on his website, the cracker says the effort was not only taking up too much of his time, but that Sony's recent "menaces" to PS3 modders left him unwilling to continue. We can see why he'd drop out, but we're sad to see him go -- the PSP homebrew community owes him a great deal.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

PSP modder extraordinare Dark Alex calls it quits originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 03 Jul 2007 10:49:00 EST. There really isn't much else to say here: it has a fake D-pad, fake control buttons, and is named PS-P so that it doesn't fully invoke the wrath of Sony's legal department. The PS-P relies on the idea that if you're going to charge your spare PSP battery, it might as well be in a cute little plastic box in-keeping with the style of the primary unit. We can't -- and don't want to -- argue with that, even if it could cost you more than the plain and simple $30 Sony charger.

[Via PSP Fanboy]

Battery charger looks like a PSP, but just charges PSP batteries originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 09:27:00 EST. Apparently, like so many others, the PSP's nub got the better of him, prompting him to enact his revenge by wiring up a PS2 steering wheel to the handheld's buttons and analog control. As the video after the break shows, the whole setup appears to work reasonably well -- or, at least as well as a full-size steering wheel hooked up to a PSP can be expected to work.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
Continue reading PSP steering wheel mod rides into reality

PSP steering wheel mod rides into reality originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 19 Mar 2007 19:10:00 EST. Instead, an intrepid young -- and we mean young: his YouTube display name is "obiwan222222" -- PSP Fanboy has managed to get his PlayStation Portable to act as a screen for his Wii using Sony's LocationFree Player solution for the PSP. By patching through the PSP to LocationFree and by sticking what looks like a custom made Wii sensor above the console, the PSP can display the Wii's output using its WiFi to connect to the internet video stream, and a spare Wiimote to control the cursor. Unfortunately, this solution is far from practical, as there's an built-in lag of around 6 seconds: not something you want when playing twitch games. Besides the actual concept, the best part about the walkthrough video (which is after the break), is Obiwan22's narration. One typical quote for you: "I am not some kind of genius. I just want to make a statement [to show] what you can do with your LocationFree Player!" Aww, bless.

[VIa PSP Fanboy]
Continue reading Kid takes PSP and makes it play Wii

Kid takes PSP and makes it play Wii originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 17 Mar 2007 09:24:00 EST. In a rare case of besting an already questionable mod just days ago, this DIY installation is a real head scratcher, as Acidmods details how to install an actual cooling fan onto the rear of your Sony handheld. Your guess is as good as ours as to why this hack-job is actually beneifical, but if your only alternative is obliterating your PSP with a sword, we guess we'll have to recommend you hop on over and get your hot gluing on -- but only after you've mastered the art of stuffing three AAA cells into its battery pack, cool?

[Via Joystiq]

Bizarre PSP mod adds a cooling fan, utility in question originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 07 Feb 2007 17:37:00 EST. Not at all for the faint of heart or the novices in the house, this battery hack joins the incredibly long list of hackerations that we've seen come the PSP's way, and while it takes a bit more effort than just picking up the X2, we're sure the bragging rights alone make it worthwhile. The crafty gurus over at Acidmods have apparently found a way to gut, re-wire, and completely transform your average PSP battery pack into a vessel that can hold a trio of AAA cells in order to power your bantam machine. Admittedly, this ranks pretty far right on the DIY difficulty scale, so we wouldn't recommend risking your life on this one unless you know quite a few tricks of the trade, but if you've nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon than create a battery pack out of a battery pack, the read link is waiting for your attention.

[Via PSPFanboy]

Power your PSP with a trio of AAA batteries originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 05 Feb 2007 00:02:00 EST. Apparently, someone finally figured out that blessing foreign lands with a rainbow-like assortment of PSP colors wasn't exactly fair to us North Americans, and now we're seeing blue and silver Sony faceplates pop up for those who don't mind a bit of DIY action. So if you're yearning to get a dash of color on your current PlayStation Portable, and aren't too keen on dropping 35 large, you can snag either blue or silver right now for $28.50 apiece.

[Via PSPFanboy]

Sony PSP faceplates add color to US units originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Jan 2007 17:11:00 EST. We're guessing that a keyboard attachment isn't the combo move that the fanboys have been waiting for, despite the abandoned efforts of Logic, and the new, successful efforts of a coder called Moneytoo, who created a homebrew application that lets you hook up a Palm Universal Wireless keyboard to your PSP so that you can write simple text files. Nevermind that it won't help with typing in crazy long SSIDs, WEP keys, or URLs, it's still a rather impressive coding job, not least in the context of Sony's repeated efforts to prevent people from running unsigned code on their little portables and Logic's consequent failure to produce a PSP keyboard peripheral. The fact that Moneytoo made it possible to use a 3rd party peripheral which can be picked up on eBay for around $50 was a nice touch too, but considering that there's currently no ability to save, or even open text files using the homebrew app, we'd recommend you hold onto your regular homework machine for a little bit longer. That beta tag doesn't mean "better."

Homebrew typing application for PSP pops up originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 20 Jan 2007 15:31:00 EST.
