Nothing spices up waning interest in an aging console like a special edition, and while one could say that announcing <em>three</em> special editions is something of a stretch for the word "special," these certainly are some... vibrant color schemes. At its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/16/live-from-sonys-tgs-2010-press-conference/">press event yesterday</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony">Sony</a> announced a couple of new, pupil-assaulting two-tone color schemes for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psp">PSP</a>, along with a Monster Hunter edition that left many an otaku fainting in the aisles thanks to its gold highlights and redesigned analog nub. Read on for our impressions of all three noble beasts.<br />

In case you missed it during our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/16/live-from-sonys-tgs-2010-press-conference/">liveblog</a>, Sony announced a new special edition PSP-3000 at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tokyo%20game%20show">Tokyo Game Show</a>. What's special? Well, besides the Monster Hunter Portable 3rd graphics, the newly refined PSP also ships with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/20/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/">slightly enhanced</a> analog stick and beefier 2200mAh capacity battery. Look for it to ship on January 12th for &yen;19,800 (about $232).<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-monster-hunter-psp-with-new-analog-stick-coming-in-january/">Sony's Monster Hunter PSP with new analog stick coming in January</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-monster-hunter-psp-with-new-analog-stick-coming-in-january/#3369113"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/monster-hunter-psp-back-battery-pack-and-cover_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-monster-hunter-psp-with-new-analog-stick-coming-in-january/#3369114"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/monster-hunter-psp-kit_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-monster-hunter-psp-with-new-analog-stick-coming-in-january/#3369115"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/monster-hunter-psp-front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-monster-hunter-psp-with-new-analog-stick-coming-in-january/#3369117"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/monster-hunter-psp-back_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/16/sonys-monster-hunter-psp-with-modified-analog-stick-coming-in-j/">Sony's Monster Hunter PSP with modified analog stick hits Japan in January</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 16 Sep 2010 06:46:00 EST. &yen;21,000 ($232), Japan, March 4. All of the foregoing should be irrelevant information because we're absolutely, positively, definitely sure you're not going to actually buy one. Right? Look, even if you genuinely don't object to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/pink-psp-3000-official-in-japan-for-march-get-ready-girls/">Blossom Pink</a> as your color scheme, and if you quite rightly find yourself attracted by the handy soft pouch for ensconcing your new PSP-3000 in, don't you care about what <em>other people</em> might think? And that's entirely aside from the generic and lazy expectation that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/16/report-finds-single-women-enthusiastic-about-technology-single/">women</a> will buy anything so long as it bears a hue from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/12/japanese-company-greenhouse-launches-camcorder-for-women/">pink</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/04/hp-vivienne-tam-edition-mini-1000-digital-clutch-now-available/">portion</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/25/bandais-latest-handheld-helps-women-understand-men/">of</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/04/bandai-unleashes-beauty-tool-to-detect-the-condition-mood-of-yo/">the</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/16/moneuals-minew-a10-nettop-gets-preciously-attacked-by-hello-kit/">spectrum</a>. Either way, this bundle of corporate greed and malevolence is coming in about a month's time, if you're weird enough to care.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">There may have been plenty of folks pushing Sony to ditch UMD once and for all with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pspgo">PSP Go</a>, but there's at least as many sorry to see it left behind, as evidenced by the continued strong sales of the venerable PSP-3000. While nothing's official just yet, it looks like Logitech just might now be set to bridge the divide the two handhelds with a UMD drive add-on of some sort for the PSP Go. That word comes form an unnamed source speaking to <em>CVG</em>, who reportedly said that the only problem with the drive is that "<span class="text_article_body">it'll make the PSP a little bulky," but offered no other details. Of course, there's also the small problem that the add-on would only add more to the cost of the PSP Go along with the bulk, thereby making the PSP-3000 an even more attractive option, but we'll hold off on any futher speculation until this thing gets a bit more real.<br />

The PSP may be a lot of things to a lot of people, but it's not capable of pumping out images in 3D -- cross your eyes all you want but nothing's going to leap off of that LCD. We'll have to wait for at least <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/16/hardware-battle-looms-for-theoretical-successors/">another iteration</a> of portables before we can start expecting any miracles in that department, but until then there's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/v-screen">V-Screen</a>! It's a big, silly-looking attachment that pledges to add depth to your PSP games despite the system's distinctly two-dimensional screen. Is it magic? Is it sorcery? Is it complete bull? Remember the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/08/psp-go-launch-inspires-three-fold-sales-increase-for-platform/">platform sales boost</a>" that Sony was tauting after the PSPgo's release in the US? The question on everyone's minds was of course how much of that boost was buoyed by the new kid on the block, and while Sony still hasn't given us any domestic figures (nor will it ever, probably), we now know that the thing sold 28,000 units on its first day of availability on its home turf in Japan. That's certainly better than the measly 1,000 units moved in Australia over the same period, but hardly encouraging when you look at its predecessors. According to Media Create the original PSP sold 171,963 units in a day in Japan. The PSP-2000? 130,000. UMD may be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/11/sony-vp-ray-maguire-claims-umd-wasnt-brilliant-for-third-part/">hated by everyone</a>, but it seems to still have legs.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/03/sonys-pspgo-sells-28-000-units-on-first-day-in-japan-physical/">Sony's PSPgo sells 28,000 units on first day in Japan, physical media points and laughs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 09:48:00 EST. Props to Lenkeng for dressing up their otherwise anonymous VGA-to-HDMI converter box with a PSP-related angle -- the LKV8000 comes with the necessary cables to take your PSP-2000 or above's 480p video output and push out a 720p HDMI signal complete with stereo audio. Not a bad idea -- except that we can't think of an HDTV that lacks either component or VGA jacks and that doesn't have a built-in scaler to do the same job. Maybe you're just out of ports? In any event, this guy needs a Stateside distributor before we can tell you pricing or availability, so you're stuck swapping cables for a while, Sparky.<br />

<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/28/psp-go-review/">Like it or not</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pspgo">PSP Go</a> is loose in the wild, sashaying around with neither physical media nor respect for sensible price-points. Nevertheless, it has generated a rather sizeable boost in interest for the PSP platform as a whole, with Sony saying that sales for all PSPs are up 300 percent over the week before the console launched. It's easy to see why, given the buzz surrounding the new iteration of the hardware as well as the hugely anticipated <em>Gran Turismo</em> finally coming to fruition. What we don't know is how many of those new sales were of the Go and how many were of the existing PSP-3000, a stat that would have shown whether indeed the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/30/sony-thinks-its-aspirational-psp-go-might-encourage-an-uptick/">"aspirational" new system</a> would inspire some to just go ahead and buy the old system instead. We know which we would choose, how about you?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/us-psp-sales-up-300-per-cent">gamesindustry.biz</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/08/psp-go-launch-inspires-three-fold-sales-increase-for-platform/">PSP Go launch inspires three-fold sales increase for platform</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 07:28:00 EST. While <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sony/">Sony</a> seemed more than willing to show off its new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/24/psp-go-converter-gives-you-a-more-well-rounded-portable-with-sup/">PSP Go Converter</a> and even <em>more</em> willing to gloat about its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/24/ps3-slim-sells-1-million-units-in-3-weeks-chin-chin/">one millionth PS3 Slim sale</a>, this little tidbit was pushed away in some neglected corner of the Tokyo Game Show. Thankfully for you, we're dedicated to leaving no stone unturned, and now we've discovered that the outfit is fixing to cut 15 percent from the PSP-3000's price tag... but only in Japan. Starting on October 1st, the UMD-friendly handheld will be offered in The Land of the Rising Sun for &yen;16,800, or just over $185 using current conversion tables. So Sony -- any plans to hook the rest of the world up? You don't want to see us pout.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/24/sony-hacks-15-percent-from-psps-price-in-japan/">Sony hacks 15 percent from PSP's price in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 09:46:00 EST. Sony had itself quite a day yesterday, effectively reinvigorating the PlayStation brand with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/18/playstation-3-slim-unboxing-and-hands-on/">$300 PS3 Slim</a> and a host of upgrades and updates to the PSP, the PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Network. Now that the dust has settled, we thought we'd throw down a little recap in case you didn't catch it all -- it's clear that the lower-priced Slim has a lot of people talking about finally buying a PS3, but we think things like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/18/sony-announces-snackable-100mb-minis-for-psn-store/">PSP Minis "snackable" games</a> and the new PS3 firmware 3.0 might be equally important in the long run. Sure, Sony's had plenty of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/18/sony-debuts-slimmer-ps3/">big announcements</a> at Gamescom today, but fans of lowered expectations aren't out of luck either, as the company's once again gone back to the paint shop and brought out three new colors for the still-sticking-around PSP-3000. Those include the all new "turquoise blue" and "blossom pink" colors, the former of which will come bundled with <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>, as well as the "lilac purple" model that's already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/24/sony-announces-lilac-psp-hannah-montana-and-assassins-creed-en/">made an appearance</a> in the US (which'll also get the same Hannah Montanna Entertainment Pack). Still no word on the new colors getting a release over here, but it looks like folks in Europe will be able to get their hands on them in November.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/18/sony-announces-three-new-psp-3000-colors-for-europe/">Sony announces three new PSP-3000 colors for Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 18 Aug 2009 14:48:00 EST. Did anyone else think that Sony would have finally <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/02/sony-exec-says-umd-less-psp-was-always-the-plan/">killed off the UMD movie</a> for real by now? Guess again, suckers. The company just spilled some more details on that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/24/sony-announces-lilac-psp-hannah-montana-and-assassins-creed-en/">Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines PSP Entertainment Pack</a>, and in addition to that sexy white PSP-3000 and 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, your $199 will get you an as-yet-unnamed feature film on UMD. Yes, even as Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/02/sony-exec-says-umd-less-psp-was-always-the-plan/">tip-toes into the future</a> with the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/pspgo">PSPgo</a>, it's still trying to peddle movies on a garbage proprietary format <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/16/breaking-news-sonys-umds-arent-selling-well/">no one</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/30/umd-about-to-be-ditched-by-wal-mart/">ever really wanted</a> and that most studios have stopped supporting. Look up there, folks. That's the future of Sony's hopes and dreams in the handheld gaming sector. With just hours to go before the company's official <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/E3/">E3</a> 2009 press event, it looks like the pieces are all coming together. First a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/01/next-psp-to-rely-on-memory-stick-hg-micro-for-storage/">UMD-less game release</a>, then a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/28/mole-says-umd-less-psp-go-is-on-for-e3-slimmer-ps3-to-follow/">highly credible mole</a> giving the PSP Go a name, and now -- live action shots. The images here were sourced from an obviously slipped June 2009 Qore video, and aside from giving us a look at the slider-based system (which, let's be honest, looks a <span style="font-style: italic;">ton</span> like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/sonys-mylo-2-only-available-in-refurbished-form-is-the-end-n/">questionably successful mylo</a>), we're also told that it'll tout 16GB of internal memory, built-in Bluetooth and an undisclosed memory slot. If all goes well, it'll ship this Fall for a price to be determined, and it's actually <em>not</em> slated to replace the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psp3000">PSP-3000</a>, as both of 'em will attempt to live on store shelves harmoniously... at least for awhile. Oh, and don't worry -- we'll be on hand in LA to bring you all the impressions we can muster early next week.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=e3expo09&amp;thread.id=1906">PlayStation Forums</a>, thanks Matt and A1]<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Update</span>: Video is now after the break! Here's the dirt:<br />
<ul>
    <li>3.8-inch display (resolution is undisclosed)<br /></li>
    <li>43 percent lighter than the PSP-3000</li>
    <li>16GB of Flash storage</li>
    <li>Bluetooth built-in; supports handset tethering and BT headsets<br /></li>
    <li><strong>No UMD drive</strong></li>
    <li>Memory Stick Micro slot</li>
    <li>New <em>Gran Turismo</em>, <em>Little Big Planet</em> and new <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> (!) on the way</li>
    <li>Full PlayStation Network support (movie and TV rentals / purchases)</li>
    <li>Integration with PlayStation 3 (works the same as the PSP-3000 does)</li>
    <li>Sony views each of its products as "10-year lifecycle products," so the PSP "needs to live on."</li>

Sony might think the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/04/sony-says-the-dsi-is-for-kids-the-psp-is-for-winners/">DSi is just for kids</a>, but it's never had any problems pumping out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/26/sony-adds-four-new-psp-carnival-colors-to-worship/">candy-colored PSPs</a> -- and the next hue off the line might be lime green, if this image supposedly leaked from inside a Sony factory is any indication. In a sudden retch of pigmentation, Sony just spat out the "Carnival Colors" collection of PSPs. Starting March 5th in Japan, the new colors matched with a 2200mAh battery will set you back a tax-inclusive price of &yen;19,800 (about $223). Otherwise, you can drop &yen;24,800 (about $279) for the 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark2), PSP pouch, wrist strap and cloth bundle. Now go ahead, revel in your paganism before ritualistically prostrating yourselves at the feet of the <strike>Lord</strike> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/howard%20stringer">Knight of consumer electronics</a>. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/30/psp-3000-proving-to-be-difficult-for-hackers-to-crack/">notoriously-difficult</a> PSP-3000 model (also known as PSP Brite) has finally been hacked, this time without the need for a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/18/psp-3000-finally-inevitably-hacked-by-datels-lite-blue-tool/">downgrader tool</a>. MaTiAz's "The Sparta!!!" exploit was allegedly discovered after overwriting the player's name in a <em>GripShift</em> save file with "this is spartaaaaa..." -- with 57 a's tacked onto the end -- and is now available for download along with a new SDK. It's said to work with PSP firmware versions 1.52 through the current 5.02. The Hello World proof of concept video is after the break. Welcome to the homebrew community, Brite: we've been expecting you.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/gripshift-savegame-exploit-hello-world-sparta-sdk-exploit-works-on-psp-3000-178349.html">DCEmu</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/05/psp-3000-finally-screams-hello-world-homebrew-to-assuredly-fo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSP-3000 finally screams 'Hello World,' homebrew to assuredly follow</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/05/psp-3000-finally-screams-hello-world-homebrew-to-assuredly-fo/">PSP-3000 finally screams 'Hello World,' homebrew to assuredly follow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 05 Jan 2009 22:21:00 EST. Look, we know how much you love <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/27/sony-simplifies-psp-3000-lineup-only-offering-one-sku/"><em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em>-oriented PSP SKUs</a>, don't try and hide your desire. This latest PSP-3000 bundle to feature the respectively furry / mechanical duo includes a black PSP and <em>Everyday Shooter</em> in addition to <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank Size Matters</em>, instead of the silver PSP and <em>echochrome</em> featured in that other bundle. These are all very important distinctions, we assure you. A 1GB Memory Stick Duo card and the ever-desireable <em>National Treasure 2</em> are included as well. The new bundle hits on December 15 for the same old $199 pricetag. We're still waiting on that $169 standalone PSP-3000 with bated, Skype-ready breath.<br /> <br />[Via <a href="http:// http://www.pspfanboy.com/2008/11/19/ratchet-and-clank-bundle-to-include-black-psp-3000/">PSP Fanboy</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/19/ratchet-and-clank-headline-another-psp-3000-bundle-youre-simply/">Ratchet &amp; Clank headline another PSP-3000 bundle; you're simply thrilled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 14:34:00 EST. You know those complaints about the ugly, old-school looking <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/sony-looking-into-psp-3000-interlacing-problems/">interlacing lines</a> that many (ourselves included) have reported seeing on the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psp-3000">PSP-3000</a>? The specific issue has been uncovered -- but not by Sony. A group of concerned French gamers with a 40x microscope think it all comes down to that most mellow of colors: blue. LCDs are comprised of RGB pixels that, combined, form all the rainbow of hues in between. As you can see in the picture above, the PSP-2000's LCD (left) used pixels in a vertical orientation, and the blue pixels were fairly light in color. On the PSP-3000 (right), the pixels are now arranged horizontally, and the blue ones are far darker than before. The dark horizontal lines result in the heinous interlacing, an effect that any <em>Command &amp; Conquer</em> player will tell you wasn't even cool in the 90's. Sony's already called this a "feature" and not a flaw, so if you absolutely must buy a PSP this holiday season the folks at <em>Logic-Sunrise</em> who took the above pics recommend you buy an older 2000-series -- while you still can.<br /><br />[Thanks Pierce]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/31/psp-3000-put-under-microscope-interlacing-issue-exposed/">PSP-3000 put under microscope, interlacing issue exposed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 10:24:00 EST. <div align="left">The PSP has proven to be quite the popular system among hackers and modders of all sorts, but it looks like Sony has turned the tables a bit with its latest <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psp3000">PSP-3000</a> model (otherwise known as the PSP Brite), which has so far put up a stiff resistance against folks' attempts to put it to some decidedly unofficial uses. Among other things, the PSP-3000 has apparently completely shut shutting down the popular <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/23/pandoras-battery-hack-promises-to-unbrick-all-bricked-psps/">Pandora battery hack</a>, and it's even managed to stifle new attempts by heavyweight modders like Dark Alex to crack it open. One modder, known only as Royginald, even went so far as to swap the PSP-3000's CPU out in favor of one from a PSP-2000, only to discover far too late that the 3000's new interlaced video made the entire setup quite useless. Maybe that's one of the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/sony-looking-into-psp-3000-interlacing-problems/">features</a>" Sony was talking about?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pspfanboy.com/2008/10/30/psp-brite-is-impervious-to-hackers/">PSP Fanboy</a>]</div>

Hope all you would-be PSP buyers out there are into that PSP-3000 Ratchet &amp; Clank Entertainment Pack that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/sonys-psp-3000-now-available-across-north-america/">just went on sale</a> a couple weeks ago, because it's going to be the only bundle available from here on out. That's the word straight from Sony, which says that "ongoing discussions" with retailers have led it to kill the previously-announced $169 4GB Memory PSP-3000 bundle in favor of offering a single SKU -- although the company helpfully points out that you can still score a 4GB PSP Memory Stick PRO Duo for an additional $45. Yeah, thanks for the tip, guys. The current Mystic Silver bundle will be joined by a Piano Black version sometime in December, so you're not totally limited option-wise, but we're not exactly pumped about throwing extra money at a game we don't necessarily want -- we'd happily drop the extra cash on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/sony-looking-into-psp-3000-interlacing-problems/">non-interlaced screen</a>, however.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/27/sony-simplifies-psp-3000-lineup-only-offering-one-sku/">Sony simplifies PSP-3000 lineup, only offering one SKU</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 23:54:00 EST. We first caught wind of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/22/sony-said-to-be-prepping-psp-3000-with-built-in-mic/">slightly revamped PSP</a> months ago, and the long-awaited <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/20/sony-gets-official-with-psp-3000/">handheld</a> -- complete with a new, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/22/psp-3000-screen-head-to-head-with-the-psp-2000-oh-thats-what/">fancier</a> and in some cases <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/sony-looking-into-psp-3000-interlacing-problems/">more dreadful</a> display -- finally hit US shelves this month. For those that picked one of these up and have spent some quality time digging into the latest <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/15/sony-pushes-out-firmware-5-0-for-psp/">firmware</a>, how are you liking things? Particularly for those that upgraded, are you pleased with the new build? Are you being plagued with those mysterious screen <strike>problems</strike> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/sony-looking-into-psp-3000-interlacing-problems/">features</a>? Could you stand to see a few more things tweaked for the PSP-4000? We suspect there will be quite a few mixed messages flying in this one, so let's get those comments rolling.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/24/how-would-you-change-sonys-psp-3000/">How would you change Sony's PSP-3000?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 24 Oct 2008 18:32:00 EST. Ruh roh. Seems that swanky new LCD on Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP3000/">PSP-3000</a> could be garnering more complaints than anything else. If you'll recall, the aforesaid system was touted as having a brighter, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/22/psp-3000-screen-head-to-head-with-the-psp-2000-oh-thats-what/">better screen</a> than the PSP-2000, but now the PlayStation forums are filling up with irate PSP-3000 buyers who are experiencing unexplained scanlines and totally peculiar interlacing problems. As you can see above, the 3000's screen looks noticeably worse than that of the 2000, and while we always hope that these issues are contained, we have at least one Engadget staffer and a Joystiq comrade who can attest to this being real. SCEA has been contacted and is currently "looking into" the matter -- we won't dare say that r-word just yet, but this doesn't look particularly good on the surface. We'll keep you posted.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/sony-investigating-psp-brite-screen-issues/">Joystiq</a>]<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: A Japanese Sony Computer Entertainment representative has informed us that the interlacing-like lines are just "features" of the new LCD, and currently, there are no plans to fix it with a future software update since it is in the hardware.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/sony-looking-into-psp-3000-interlacing-problems/">Sony "looking into" PSP-3000 screen interlacing problems</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 09:06:00 EST. We know they're <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/sonys-psp-3000-now-available-across-north-america/">hitting the streets</a>, and we've already seen some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/11/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/">unboxing pics</a> and a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/psp-3000-ripped-to-shreds-for-your-enjoyment/">nasty gutting</a>, but we felt we needed to give Sony's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP3000/">PSP-3000</a> the proper Engadget treatment. As you can tell by the photos, there's not much new here, though as you should know, the guts are where it's all going down (new screen, built-in microphone). Still it never hurts to take a close look at a shiny new toy... so enjoy yourselves in the gallery.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/">PSP-3000 unboxing and hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1108166"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp300013_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1108182"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp300012_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1108168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp300018_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1108169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp300010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/#1108179"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp300011_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/20/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/">PSP-3000 unboxing and hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 13:58:00 EST. Now that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP3000/">PSP-3000</a> (or PSP Brite, as our Joystiq friends like to call it) has hit the streets, it was only natural for its innards to be splayed for all the world to see -- it's all part of the circle of life, or some similarly cliche lyric. We wouldn't really know where to begin running through these parts and figuring out what's new, but <em>Impress Watch</em> says it's pretty much the LCD getting all the love here, and that otherwise they're seeing way fewer internal changes than they saw when Sony released the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP2000/">PSP-2000</a>. Sounds about right to us, but we're really just in it for the senseless violence of it all.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pspfanboy.com/2008/10/16/go-inside-the-psp-3000-literally/">PSP Fanboy</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/psp-3000-ripped-to-shreds-for-your-enjoyment/">PSP-3000 ripped to shreds for your enjoyment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 10:29:00 EST. Given that a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP3000/">PSP-3000</a> <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em> Entertainment Pack managed to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/11/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/">sneak out</a> a few days back (and, you know, being that today's the official launch day and all), you shouldn't be too floored to hear that the altogether <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/22/psp-3000-screen-head-to-head-with-the-psp-2000-oh-thats-what/">brighter</a> PlayStation Portable is now available across North America. 'Course, you'll have to fork over $199.99 for the aforementioned bundle if you want it today -- the less-frills black PSP-3000 kit (with just a 4GB Memory Stick) should be around next month.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/sonys-psp-3000-now-available-across-north-america/">Sony's PSP-3000 now available across North America</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 19:41:00 EST. Due to be launched next Tuesday, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP3000/">PSP-3000</a> <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em> Entertainment Pack has managed to slip into at least one Best Buy a few days early, where it was quickly snatched up by friendly tipster Aaron G. He sent us a few unboxing shots out of the kindness of his heart, and now he's undoubtedly too engrossed in <em>National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets</em> and that ultra-bright screen to pay us much heed. Oh Nicolas Cage, what a charmer you are.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/">PSP-3000 sneaks out a bit early, suffers an unboxing</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/#1091917"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp-3000-u-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/#1091918"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp-3000-u-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/#1091920"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp-3000-u-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/#1091919"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp-3000-u-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/#1091921"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/10/psp-3000-u-006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/11/psp-3000-sneaks-out-a-bit-early-suffers-an-unboxing/">PSP-3000 sneaks out a bit early, suffers an unboxing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 11 Oct 2008 12:09:00 EST. In a recent posting from the Director, he "clarifies" things by asserting that "the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/20/sony-gets-official-with-psp-3000/">new PSP</a> will have equivalent battery life to the current PSP, about 4 to 6 hours for games and about 4 to 5 hours for UMD videos." He continues on to affirm that the new, brighter and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/22/psp-3000-screen-head-to-head-with-the-psp-2000-oh-thats-what/">altogether lovelier display</a> does suck down more power, but Sony's dutiful engineers apparently managed to "reduce the power consumption of the overall system" in order to counteract that. At this point, we'll just wait for real world battery tests before believing anything.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/03/psp-brite-cured-of-ailing-battery-life/">Joystiq</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/03/sony-exec-takes-it-back-says-psp-3000-battery-life-equivalent/">Sony exec takes it back, says PSP-3000 battery life "equivalent to current PSP"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 21:34:00 EST. Luckily for you gamers with endless pockets out there, Koller assures that minor wrinkle will be offset because, "We're going to have the extended life battery that's still available for consumers, so we're still going to get the eight-to-ten hours out of that battery." So just to make that clear, the regular battery life will be diminished, but <em>you can buy a new, larger battery from Sony</em> to extend your gaming time. Got that? Good. Watch him say it for real in the video after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.t3.com/news/sony%27s-new-psp-suffers-from-reduced-battery-life?=36571&amp;cid=OTC-RSS&amp;attr=T3-Main-RSS">T3</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/02/psp-3000-battery-life-diminished-by-new-screen-sony-suggests-bu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSP-3000 battery life diminished by new screen, Sony suggests buying a bigger battery</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/02/psp-3000-battery-life-diminished-by-new-screen-sony-suggests-bu/">PSP-3000 battery life diminished by new screen, Sony suggests buying a bigger battery</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 23:58:00 EST. <div align="left">There may not have been any word of a new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psp">PSP</a> out of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e32008">E3</a> as some had suspected, but it looks Sony may have a bit of a late surprise for us, at least if these tantalizing pics from PSPChina are to be believed. Apparently, this new PSP-3000 model remains mostly unchanged from the current PSP-2000, with the notable addition of a built-in microphone and a somewhat less notable PlayStation button in place of the usual Home button. As you can see in the picture after the break, the signature steel ring on the back of the PSP also appears to have been trimmed a bit (there's a pic of the inside of the case as well, for the curious). Not exactly the DS Lite sort of upgrade that'd make everyone ditch their old PSPs to be sure but, as we've seen with the PSP-2000, it would be about par for the course for Sony.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/rumor-psp-3000-adds-built-in-mic-ps-button/">Joystiq</a>, Khattab]</div>

It doesn't come from an over-talkative exec or anything, however, but rather a curious placeholder image that was turned up on Sony's online instruction manual site. As PSP Fanboy reports, not only are there the expected images for the original PSP-1000 series and the slimmer PSP-2000 series, but there is one for a hereto unheard of 3000 series as well (no 4000 series, though). Of course, it's entirely possible that the image is nothing more than a mistake or the work of someone trying to be a little <em>too</em> prepared, but we have a sneaking suspicion that won't stop the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/fan-made-psp-mockup-is-far-sexier-than-the-real-thing-will-ever/">speculation</a> from spinning out of control.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/28/psp-3000-reference-turns-up-on-sonys-website-dont-get-too-exc/">PSP-3000 reference turns up on Sony's website, don't get too excited</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 15:42:00 EST.
