Besides the new Envy 133, Voodoo is also launching its 22-inch tall, all-aluminum (glass, wood, and leather too) Omen tower. This time, for gamers. It features a 7-inch, 800 x 480 display for secondary information on the outside and a Voodoo designed water cooling loop on the inside to keep the fire down on up to 2x CPUs (up to 16 cores) and 4x GPUs. The system tops out with a pair of 3.2GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9770 processors, 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM, and support for "next generation" NVIDIA and ATI graphics... at a price. Starting at around $7,000 and available exclusively to existing Voodoo customers at launch sometime later this year.

Hold onto your frame rates folks, as Alienware has just relaunched its more-potent-than-ever Area-51 ALX desktop. The bona fide gaming rig packs a 3.2GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9770, but rather than being satisfied with Intel's work, this thing comes overclocked to 4GHz -- it's "maximum stable output." As expected, you'll find the outfit's own High-Performance Liquid Cooling solution to keep things from turning into molten hot lava, and you'll also have your choice of twin NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GPUs or an ATI CrossFireX configuration with dual ATI Radeon 3870 X2 cards. Furthermore, you'll notice 4GB of DDR3 RAM, dual Ethernet ports, an optional Blu-ray burner, oodles of hard drive space and all the other high-end niceties you've come to expect from the company. Only problem? The $5,549 starting price that comes along with the 4GHz CPU and required 1,200-watt PSU.

Alienware relaunches Area-51 ALX desktop with overclocked 4GHz QX9770 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 May 2008 11:40:00 EST. Ready for more rumors of processor delays? This time, it's Intel (not AMD) in the spotlight according to DigiTimes' sources at Taiwan motherboard makers. Intel is said to be delaying volume shipments of their quad-core QX9770 CPU for high-end desktops until February or March instead of January as earlier believed. Worse yet, the proc is now rumored to cost $1,399 (in 1,000 unit quantities) when it ships -- not $1,200 as thought back in November. Hey Intel, if this move has anything to do with an intent to monopolize the market in lieu of AMD's inability to compete then let us remind you of something -- the EU and a certain Attorney General are watching you.

Intel delaying, jacking the price of quad-core QX9770 CPU? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 09:14:00 EST. Want to see what AMD is up against come Q1? You're looking at it, the 3.2GHz, quad-core, QX9770 Core 2 Extreme processor from Intel. Like Intel's current headliner -- the QX9650 -- we're talking 45-nm Yorkfield class silicon here with 1600MHz front side bus and 12MB L2 cache. HotHardware got their hands on the proc a bit early and call it the fastest quad-core processor they've ever tested, "bar none." Generally speaking, they found it to be about 5 - 8% faster than the QX9650. As you can see from the graph up there, it easily smokes the $300 Phenom 9700 and the $350 2.6GHz Phenom 9900 (both due in Q1) likely won't fare much better. Just keep in mind that Intel's top-performer will cost you around $1,200 by the time it pops in Q1. Somehow, we don't think that's going dissuade any Crysis gamers out there.
Intel's QX9770 quad-core to blow away competition in Q1 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 19 Nov 2007 08:55:00 EST.
