SideQuest Studios' tactical RPG Rainbow Moon is now available for the PlayStation Vita, introducing newcomers to its dungeon-crawling, loot-based approach to the genre while wooing veterans with DLC import options. Released for the PlayStation 3 in 2012, Rainbow Moon focuses on character growth and customization, allowing players to outfit their party members with new abilities via add-on content. The game features Cross-Save functionality, and previous purchases carry over into the newly launched PS Vita version, giving fans the option of either resuming their quest or starting a new game with bonuses intact. Players who purchased the PS3 version of Rainbow Moon can pick up the PS Vita port for 50 percent off of its launch price this week, and PlayStation Plus members receive an additional discount. A free 90-minute demo is also available, allowing players to resume their progress in the full version upon purchase.

SideQuest Studios is flying PS3 game Rainbow Moon to the Vita on December 3. The dungeon crawler and strategy RPG hybrid supports cross-saving between the two platforms, and the Vita game's assortment of new features, fixes, and tweaks are also being patched in to the PS3 version. As for Rainbow Skies, last we heard it was due on both PS3 and Vita sometime next year. However, its launch trajectory may be awry, after Sidequest CEO Marcus Pukropski took to the PlayStation Blog comments section to note the sequel "won't be out before the end of 2014 or maybe later." Whenever it arrives, Sidequest says Skies will bring new combo attacks, monster taming and "up to 100 hours and beyond" of cutesy-faced RPG-ness.

  • Rainbow Moon review: A real grind

Playing the PSN exclusive Rainbow Moon evokes an unusual sort of frustration: it's a victim of wasted potential. This kind of game does a lot of things right, features some neat ideas and fun play elements, but is crippled by one or two major problems – problems so significant that they drag the rest of the product down. All it would take are a couple of fixes to make a great game instead of a merely passable one but, alas, you're stuck with a product that, for everything it does right, is damaged by very obvious flaws. In Rainbow Moon's case, the novel idea is to blend two distinct types of role-playing game into a unique experience. Exploration is done in the overhead, isometric perspective of classic dungeon-crawlers, and both the overworld and the puzzle-filled labyrinths you'll wind up spelunking are littered with copious amounts of loot and roaming beasties out for your blood. Touch one of the monsters on the map, however, and you'll be spirited off to a new playfield: a miniature version of the grid-based arenas so common in strategy-RPGs like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics.%Gallery-158468%

SideQuest Studios' latest development diary for Rainbow Moon expounds upon the game's weapon and item systems, specifically how players can upgrade their items via crafting. Also: there are hats, which means that the game will be a huge success if the rest of the games industry is any indication.

Rainbow Moon's funky-looking self is heading to the US PlayStation Network on July 10, SideQuest Studios CEO Marcus Pukropski says. For us normal folk, the game'll run $14.99, whereas PlayStation Plus subs get the game at a 20 percent discount ($11.99)."But what in the hell is Rainbow Moon?," you wonder? Good question! Luckily the handy video above is here to tell you just that (spoilers: it's an RPG from the Soldner-X folks).

Besides being chock full of explosions, meteors and a charmingly tiny boat, this latest trailer for Rainbow Moon also demonstrates the isometric PSN-exclusive RPG's various systems, which as we all know are the most important parts of any RPG. Well, at least as important as the inclusion of a tiny boat, at any rate. The game's battle system straddles the line between "new" and "classic" by implementing old-school ideas (like a grid-based combat map) and counter balancing them with more modern concepts (like optional random encounters), according to a PlayStation Blog post by SideQuest Studios' CEO Marcus Pukropski. Players will have access to "over 120" different skills for use in battle against "100 different enemies from 17 classes."Despite the trailer's high-octane vibe, combat is said to be a "no stress, no chaos" affair in which players have time to properly strategize their next move. Rainbow Moon should be available on the PlayStation Network in "just a few weeks."%Gallery-154685%

  • Soldner-X dev announces PSN strategy RPG 'Rainbow Moon'

Known for developing the tongue-twistingly titled shooter Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer, SideQuest Studios is hard at work on its next IP for release on PlayStation Network. Rainbow Moon is an isometric view strategy RPG in a fantasy setting, currently scheduled to hit in Q4 2011 according to publisher eastasiasoft. Early imagery shows a vibrant hand-drawn visual style, and the game's developer is shooting (no pun intended) for a silky smooth 60 frames per second. Details released so far mention six playable characters and a roughly 25 hour adventure. Our favorite feature so far: we can actually pronounce its name.
