The updates provide support for the AF assist beam on Canon's Speedlight 270 EX flashgun. More importantly perhaps, is firmware version 1.0.6 that "addresses the vertical banding noise phenomenon" for owners of the 50D. By <em>addresses</em> we presume Canon means <em>fixes</em> but we won't know until we hear your feedback. Well?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dpreview.com/news/0904/09042301canonfirmwareupdates.asp">Digital Photography Review</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/23/canon-50d-firmware-update-fixes-vertical-banding-issues/">Canon 50D firmware update fixes vertical banding issues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 07:24:00 EST. Still, even the fanboys in attendance can't deny that firmware updates that solve any number of quirks are loved <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/23/how-would-you-change-canons-rebel-xsi/">just the same</a>. Canon has just posted up firmware v1.0.9 for the aforesaid DSLR, which purportedly fixes three primary issues. The 7.81MB download addresses a "phenomenon in which AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting does not operate normally under specific conditions," another in which "the Live View exposure simulation warning indication does not properly display during Live View shooting, and yet another in which "images cannot be played back after continuous shooting when a printer is connected to the camera or a video output terminal is used." Tap that read link to get your download on, and be sure to let us know if this update actually works as advertised.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10031691-1.html?part=rss&amp;tag=feed&amp;subj=Crave">CNET</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/03/canon-posts-up-1-0-9-firmware-update-for-eos-rebel-xsi/">Canon posts up 1.0.9 firmware update for EOS Rebel XSi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 22:52:00 EST. For the DSLR hardcore, we doubt you waited much more than a day or two after launch before securing a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xsi/">Rebel XSi</a> of your own, and for newcomers to the fold, you may have snatched one up after hordes of reviewers gave it an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/09/canon-rebel-xsi-review-roundup/">expected thumbs-up</a>. Whatever the case, we're eager to know what's gone right and wrong with the first thousand or so clicks. Has it lived up to your expectations? Are you decidedly joyous about the image quality? Could anything stand to be tweaked / reworked / overhauled completely? You ponied up some serious change for this thing, so don't let emotion get in the way of telling Canon how you really feel.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/23/how-would-you-change-canons-rebel-xsi/">How would you change Canon's Rebel XSi?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 23 May 2008 18:30:00 EST. <div align="left">We've already seen it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/23/canons-rebel-xsi-gets-emphatically-unboxed/">unboxed</a>, but if you've been waiting for a slightly more thorough look at Canon's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/xsi">Rebel XSi</a> DSLR (otherwise known as the EOS 450D) before you drop $800+ on it, you can now get your fix thanks to a steady stream of reviews that are now pouring in. Among the earliest to get its hands on a unit was Digital Photography Review, which reserved final judgment because it only did a preview but nonetheless provided one of the most exhaustive looks at the camera, complete with comparisons to its predecessor and its nearest competitors. Offering more opinions was Camera Labs, which found the XSi to be a "worthy successor" to the XTi, although it warns that new buyers should consider whether the upgrades are really worth the extra cost. The folks at LetsGoDigital were a bit more enthusiastic, calling the XSi a "perfect camera for everybody," although they were slightly disappointed by the camera's plastic casing. That also proved to be sticking point for Digital Camera Review, which went as far as to call the camera "cheap looking" and "less refined" than those with a lightly textured finish. On the upside, it says that the camera's low-noise sensor "raises the bar for entry-level DSLRs," with its extensive customization options, and Canon's expectedly strong <span id="intelliTxt" name="intelliTxt">AF system </span>also winning it some high marks. If you're still not swayed one way other the other, you find plenty more details by diving into the links below.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos450d/">Read</a> - Digital Photography Review (preview)<br /><a href="http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_450D_Digital_Rebel_XSi/verdict.shtml">Read</a> - Camera Labs (88%)<br /><a href="http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/camera/review/164/page_9.html">Read</a> - LetsGoDigital (82%)<br /><a href="http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3433&amp;review=canon+rebel+xsi+450d">Read</a> - Digital Camera Review ("<span id="intelliTxt" name="intelliTxt">a fairly conservative upgrade")</span></div>

Well, what do you know? The actual <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/rebelxsi/">Rebel XSi</a> comes packaged in a box that looks exactly like the one <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/11/canons-rebel-xsi-turns-up-in-retail-spy-shot/">that cropped up</a> earlier this month. Still, there's just something special about seeing Canon's latest DSLR cautiously unboxed, with the fortunate unboxer taking special care not to insert an obscene amount of blur into each snap. Sure, the model shown above was unboxed within a retail location, but that's not to say you can't hand over some cold hard cash to do the same at your abode. Check out the whole process in the read link below -- just brace yourself for some serious (albeit SFW) gadget affection in that first shot.<br /><br />[Thanks, Ryan]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/23/canons-rebel-xsi-gets-emphatically-unboxed/">Canon's Rebel XSi gets emphatically unboxed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:45:00 EST. After seeing that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/11/canons-rebel-xsi-turns-up-in-retail-spy-shot/">spy shot</a> and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/09/canon-rebel-xsi-shows-up-on-amazon-with-a-ship-date-april-27/">Amazon link</a> with an April release date, it seemed like Canon's Rebel XSi was bound to drop any moment, but now that may not be the case. According to the latest info plastered up at the online-retailer, you won't be able to get your hands on the new DSLR until June 15th, which is basically a lifetime if you've been waiting on this. It could just be a minor mixup, but frankly we're not holding our breath.<br /><strong><br />Update:</strong> According to a <em>number</em> of commenters, this camera is available pretty widely right now. Apparently, Amazon is the only place on Earth where the release is being delayed. You know that Rebel XSi we saw <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/09/canon-rebel-xsi-shows-up-on-amazon-with-a-ship-date-april-27/">pop up on Amazon</a>? Well thanks to a tipster, we now know it's appearing in more than one location. That photo above shows one of these babies fresh out of a shipping crate at Best Buy -- so if you've been saving your pennies, they could find their way into the hands of a blue-shirted sales associate any day now.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/11/canons-rebel-xsi-turns-up-in-retail-spy-shot/">Canon's Rebel XSi turns up in retail spy shot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 10:42:00 EST. We knew Canon's hot new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/23/canon-rebel-xsi-official-move-over-xti/">Rebel XSi</a> was due this month, but it looks like Amazon is once again to the rescue with a specific street date: April 27, which is a bit after the previously-rumored date of the 15th. That's what, just 5,000 pennies a day to get one by launch? <em>Totally</em> doable.<br /><br />PS. -Don't forget, if you can't wait that long, we've got a hands-on gallery right <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/31/hands-on-with-the-canon-eos-rebel-xsi-dslr/">here</a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, Dan]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/09/canon-rebel-xsi-shows-up-on-amazon-with-a-ship-date-april-27/">Canon Rebel XSi shows up on Amazon with a ship date: April 27</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 20:21:00 EST. We got our hands on what's probably one of the most anticipated cameras of the show, the Canon EOS Rebel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/23/canon-rebel-xsi-official-move-over-xti/">XSi</a> DSLR. The predecessor XTi model was crazy successful, so smart money says that the step up to a 3-inch live view LCD, 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, 9-point AF and Canon's DIGIC III processing will help continue the trend. That's a lot of features packed into this "starter" DSLR from Canon. With this body and all the lenses Canon has, this is one entry level that most folks will never need to leave.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-canon-rebel-xsi-dslr/">Hands-on with the Canon Rebel XSi DSLR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-canon-rebel-xsi-dslr/#614915"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/pma-img_0212_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-canon-rebel-xsi-dslr/#614916"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/pma-img_0213_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-canon-rebel-xsi-dslr/#614917"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/pma-img_0214_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-canon-rebel-xsi-dslr/#614906"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/pma-img_0199_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-canon-rebel-xsi-dslr/#614907"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/pma-img_0200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/31/hands-on-with-the-canon-eos-rebel-xsi-dslr/">Hands-on with the Canon EOS Rebel XSi DSLR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 02:10:00 EST. Looks like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/24/canon-gets-official-with-their-400d-rebel-xti-dslr-for-photoki/">Rebel XTi</a> is officially last(-last) year's model -- just in time for PMA Canon's updating their new consumer DSLR with some sexy new features. No shots of the camera yet, ironically, but here's the dirt:<br />
<ul>
    <li>12.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS (1.6x focal conversion)</li>
    <li>3-inch live view LCD (up from the XTi's non-live-view 2.5-inch)</li>
    <li>DIGIC III image processor</li>
    <li>9-point AF, 3.5fps shot rate (up to 45 images in JPEG, 6 in RAW)</li>
    <li>The usual ultrasonic sensor cleaning</li>
    <li>SD / SDHC media</li>
    <li>Ships April, $799 and $899 for body-only / included EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, respectively</li>
</ul>
Also, two new telephoto lenses announced. More on those after the break.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-rebel-xsi-official-move-over-xti/">Canon Rebel XSi official, move over XTi</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-rebel-xsi-official-move-over-xti/#603974"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/canon-rebel-xsi-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-rebel-xsi-official-move-over-xti/#603975"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/canon-rebel-xsi-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-rebel-xsi-official-move-over-xti/#603976"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/canon-rebel-xsi-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/23/canon-rebel-xsi-official-move-over-xti/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon Rebel XSi official, move over XTi</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/23/canon-rebel-xsi-official-move-over-xti/">Canon Rebel XSi official, move over XTi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 23:17:00 EST.
