The sensor module was on display at the company's NAB booth today, under a backlit case that could only have been designed to make photographing the new chip a near-impossible task. We did manage to snag a few frames of the device, which appears as a mere silhouette to the naked eye. Sensors aren't designed for us to look at, however -- they're supposed to do the looking -- so we won't get any more hung up on the presentation. Existing RED camera owners can look forward to an incredibly impressive 15+ stops of native dynamic range and up to 120 frames-per-second at resolutions up to 5K. And as we discovered earlier today, the upgrade will roll out to EPIC owners sometime in 2012 for $6,000 while Scarlet users will need to hang tight for a release date, and a price tag. That's all we've got as far as details go, so click on through the gallery below for a flashlight-enhanced peek at the Dragon.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/">RED Dragon 6K sensor upgrade hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966138"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red001-1334600249_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966139"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red002-1334600251_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966140"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red003-1334600252_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966141"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red004-1334600253_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966142"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red005-1334600254_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED Dragon 6K sensor upgrade eyes-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade/">RED Dragon 6K sensor upgrade eyes-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 14:34:00 EST. That's likely the thinking behind the REDray, the 4K laser cinema projector making an appearance at the company's NAB booth today. The device supports 2D and passive 3D (up to 120fps in 3D mode), with 4K projection for each eye and has a rated laser life of over 25,000 hours. While the device itself is likely to be hidden behind glass in an elevated projector room, the REDray has the same industrial look and feel of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/02/reds-scarlet-x-4k-camera-video-review/">Scarlet</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/05/red-epic-scores-a-canon-eos-mount-vincent-laforet-gets-some-awe">Epic</a> capturing counterparts, with a solid matte metal construction, heavy duty bolts and dedicated access panels for the lens filter, the laser phase adjustment oscillator and the angular refraction aberration indexer. There's also a T1.8 50mm lens mounted up front, sufficiently completing the beautifully monstrous package. Also on display was the tablet-controlled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-teases-4k-redray-player-and-projector/">REDray Player</a>, which includes four HDMI 1.4 video outputs with 7.1-channel audio output, the ability to move 4K video to the internal hard drive and an SD reader for ingesting content. You'll also find dual gigabit Ethernet ports, along with USB and eSATA connectors.</p><p> The projector experience is much less about the hardware than it is the projections themselves, which certainly did a justice here -- especially considering the imaging device's mid-development status. During a screening of the 3D short <em>Loom</em>, which was shot with the RED Epic, images looked fantastic with accurate color and excellent dynamic range, allowing us to see every detail in a contrasty dark scene, where we were able to make out a very dimly lit female actress. The projection was incredibly sharp on the 24-<strike>inch</strike> foot screen, despite the film being displayed with 2K for each eye, rather than the maximum 4K. There will be two versions of the REDray projector, including a home theater flavor that supports screens up to 15 feet in size that'll ring in at under $10,000, and a professional model with support for larger venues. RED CEO Jim Jannard confirmed that the home-bound version will ship sometime this year, though he was unable to provide a more precise ship date. We weren't permitted to record video during the screening -- which is for the best, considering that there's really no way to do this thing justice -- but you can still flip through the gallery below for an early look at REDray.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/">REDray 4K cinema laser projector eyes-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965722"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965723"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965724"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965725"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965726"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/redray-4k-cinema-laser-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>REDray 4K cinema laser projector and player eyes-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/redray-4k-cinema-laser-hands-on/">REDray 4K cinema laser projector and player eyes-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 13:39:00 EST. It's been quite a day for all you cinephiles out there. First Canon outed its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-launches-c300-cinema-camera-prepares-to-take-on-red-scarl/">pair</a> of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-has-a-new-eos-movies-dslr-on-the-way-too/">Cinema EOS</a> cameras, and now RED has finally released the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">Epic's</a> baby sister <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red+scarlet/">Scarlet</a>. Scarlet packs a similar punch as her older brother, so she takes 5K (5120 x 2700) resolution stills at 12fps, or can shoot your next cinematic masterpiece in 4K (4096 x 2160) at 25fps. The Scarlet also can use all of the Epic's accessories and comes with a Canon mount so there's plenty of glass to choose from, too. Best of all, Scarlet can be all yours for the low price of $9,750. That's right, for the price of a used Honda Civic, you can shoot video that essentially looks as good as those made by pros like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">Peter Jackson</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/07/spider-man-reboot-is-being-shot-in-red-epic-3d-has-jason-schwar/">John Shwartzman</a> (assuming you've got their moviemaking skills). We're about to get our hands on one, so stay tuned for our first impressions.<br />
<br />
When she's all by herself, Scarlet cuts a rather petite figure. She weighs the same as an Epic, but trades her elder brother's ebony exterior for one that is, according to RED founder Jim Jannard, "battleship gray." Not the most feminine color, but we must admit we like the two-tone appearance when you start adding on extras like a RED remote or an external view screen. Unfortunately, we didn't get to shoot any video with Scarlet, but we did get to hold her for a bit and found the build quality to be top notch. The camera has a solid feel, and while we wouldn't want to lug it around all day by hand, it's easy enough to maneuver for several minutes at a time. We're hoping we can do some serious shooting with Scarlet with sometime soon for a fuller impression -- RED aims to start shipping them on December first -- but given her low price point and copious cinematic capabilities, we imagine her dance card will be filled for quite some time.<br />

	<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-makes-an-appearance-in-vincent-laforets-mobius-find/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300mobius.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
A <em>New York Times </em>photojournalist turned Hollywood director, Vincent Laforet has become synonymous with DSLR video, after his short film <em>Reverie</em> helped catapult Canon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/5DMarkII/">5D Mark II</a> into the world of digital filmmaking. And after playing such a significant role in launching that camera, we certainly weren't surprised to see Laforet make an appearance at today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/the-canon-hollywood-event-liveblog/">Canon Cinema event</a>, with his short film <em>Mobius</em> getting some time on the big screen. The film follows a photojournalist who stumbles upon a Cartel execution, but it also tells the story of Canon's tightly-veiled C300 cinema camera, which the company launched just moments ago. Laforet used a pre-production C300 (note the green tape button labels) to shoot <em>Mobius</em> in the Mojave Desert under a variety of harsh conditions, including powerful sunlight and near-darkness, in both extremely hot and chilly temperatures -- the camera appears to have performed extremely well, given both the remote shooting environment and tight production schedule.<br />
<br />
Canon has yet to reveal the C300's price tag, which we expect to far undercut the $120,000 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/red-one-faces-arri-alexa-in-high-res-choose-your-own-adventure/">Arri Alexa</a> kit, but its sheer portability makes it a more appealing option for filmmakers -- especially those with limited time and other resources. Laforet was able to shoot his film with a very small crew, since the C300 can be operated by just one photographer. The director used the camera mounted on a tripod, tethered to a variety of helicopters, sitting on the road and even hand-held, like a camcorder or DSLR. Laforet shot with Canon's new FK30-300 telephoto cine zoom PL-mount lens, along with a variety of EOS mount lenses, and notes that the camera's form factor makes it even easier to shoot with than a DSLR like the 5D Mark II. Its cost -- somewhere in the range of $20,000 -- should also put it within reach of not only Hollywood cinematographers, but also television directors and even documentary filmmakers and news photojournalists. We won't see the C300 hit the market until late January 2012, so jump past the break for a sneak peak at <em>Mobius</em> to see Canon's new cinema flagship, along with a rather comprehensive behind-the-scenes video.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/">Canon C300 shoot with Vincent Laforet</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581517"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-40_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581481"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581482"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581483"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-makes-an-appearance-in-vincent-laforets-mobius-find/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon C300 makes an appearance in Vincent Laforet's Mobius, find the short and behind the scenes right here (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-makes-an-appearance-in-vincent-laforets-mobius-find/">Canon C300 makes an appearance in Vincent Laforet's Mobius, find the short and behind the scenes right here (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 20:28:00 EST. It's been almost two years since we first got a peek at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/red-dsmc-specs-detailed-prices-start-at-28-000-for-epix-x-low/">specs on RED's EPIC-X</a>, and the 5K-shooting, roughly $30,000 rig is just now shipping out to customers. That's not terribly shocking considering the company's notoriously long development cycles and, if you ordered one, you should be too excited about getting a new toy to worry about how long it took to build. Lets just hope the first batch of folks to start capturing gorgeous footage with this thing have a little more luck than <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/31/the-worlds-first-shipped-red-epic-gets-stolen-in-home-break-in/">Mark Pederson</a> -- RED can't be handing out $100,000 bounties every time it releases a new product.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/04/red-epic-x-starts-shipping-to-lucky-shooters-with-deep-pockets/">RED EPIC-X starts shipping to lucky shooters with deep pockets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 00:34:00 EST. We've seen some mind-blowing footage from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/14/red-shows-off-5k-epic-camera/">RED's EPIC</a>, as one might expect from a $39,500 camera with a 5K sensor and up to 120 fps video capture (at 4K). But video shooter and all-around photo wiz Vincent Laforet got to take an exclusive early look at the company's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> EOS mount, which pairs the EPIC-M with Canon's enormous collection of top-quality glass, including the 600mm f/4 L lens Laforet used for his shoot at Mono Lake in California. That lens, used with a 2x Canon teleconverter and the RED's multiplication factor, yields a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 3400mm, which as you'll see in the video below, enabled some pretty incredible <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/10/red-epic-shoots-birds-at-96fps-no-dog-needed-to-retrieve-them/">video captures</a>. RED has yet to officially announce availability for the Canon EOS mount, but has shared that it will cost $2,000 (pennies compared to the EPIC's $58,000 kit price), and will be constructed of titanium -- tasked with the critical responsibility of reducing movement during those extended-lens shoots. Jump past the break for Laforet's sample video, or check out his blog post at the source link for the full rundown.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/">RED EPIC-M Canon EOS Mount</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347607"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-273_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347608"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-287_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347609"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-291_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347610"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-292_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347613"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-epicpackage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/05/red-epic-scores-a-canon-eos-mount-vincent-laforet-gets-some-awe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED EPIC scores a Canon EOS mount, Laforet gets some extraordinary footage (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/05/red-epic-scores-a-canon-eos-mount-vincent-laforet-gets-some-awe/">RED EPIC scores a Canon EOS mount, Laforet gets some extraordinary footage (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 15:43:00 EST. Ever wondered what it feels like to tear down a $58,000 professional video camera? Well, unless you're as minted as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">Peter Jackson</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/25/james-cameron-picks-up-50-red-epic-ms-high-fives-peter-jackson/">James Cameron</a>, chances are you'll never get close to a RED EPIC-M (without <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/31/the-worlds-first-shipped-red-epic-gets-stolen-in-home-break-in/">breaking</a> the law) to find out. That said, you may get some insight from this fresh batch of disassembly shots, courtesy of the FCC. Sure, there aren't any jewels or unicorns hidden inside this powerful 5K imager, but you'll get plenty of close-up shots of its delicate circuitry -- it's actually pretty impressive how much the hand-machined chassis holds. Head over to <em>Wireless Goodness</em> to admire the full glory, but make sure you don't dribble over your keyboard.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/red-epic-m-gets-torn-down-by-the-fcc-so-you-dont-have-to/">FCC gives the RED EPIC-M its teardown treatment, so you don't have to</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 04 May 2011 12:29:00 EST. Looks like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">another</a> director's been on a shopping spree lately, as RED's Jim Jannard's just announced that he sold another 50 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/RED+EPIC/">EPIC-Ms</a> to one generous customer. Who's this, you ask? Why, it's James Cameron of <em>Avatar</em> and <em>Titanic</em> fame, and he's probably just blown $2.9 million on his latest stash of cinematographic toys -- it's $58,000 a pop for these hand-machined professional cameras. Details are scarce at the moment, but any educated guess would point at the upcoming <em>Avatar 2</em> due end of 2014, meaning our favorite blue aliens will be returning in a healthy 5K resolution. Keep an eye out for Jannard's official announcement later this week for the full lowdown.<br />

By now you're probably familiar with the $58,000 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">RED EPIC-M</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/10/red-epic-shoots-birds-at-96fps-no-dog-needed-to-retrieve-them/">what it can do</a>, but it's hard to properly admire its hand-machined beauty from a distance. We can't ship you a unit, of course, but we've got the next best thing: close-up footage of the compact 5K beast shot with <em>another</em> RED camera -- the original 4K <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/14/red-one-mysterium-x-cameras-now-available-for-all/">RED ONE M-X</a>. Lousiana post-production company Digital FX lovingly fondled EPIC-M #98 on camera, not to mention goodies like the Bomb EVF and 5-inch touchscreen LCD, and you can watch, drool and share your oh-so-envious thoughts with us right after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/14/red-epic-m-stars-in-gorgeous-vid-red-one-jealously-shoots-the-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED EPIC-M stars in gorgeous vid, RED ONE jealously shoots the footage (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/14/red-epic-m-stars-in-gorgeous-vid-red-one-jealously-shoots-the-f/">RED EPIC-M stars in gorgeous vid, RED ONE jealously shoots the footage (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 06:09:00 EST. Forgive us if we take a moment every now and again to relish in some resolution overload courtesy of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">RED EPIC</a>, but we just can't help ourselves. The video below (and picture above) come courtesy of Tom Lowe, who filmed a sequence of birds frolicking in the water at Salton Sea, California, captured at 5K resolution and at 96fps. This gives everything a rather majestic air to it -- though the soundtrack certainly doesn't hurt. Click "play" and enjoy, and then wish that your connection were fast enough to handle an uncompressed 5K video stream.<br />

Ready for a little sexy video of a camera that is, itself, also filming video? Check out the clip below of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">RED EPIC </a>capturing some luscious scenery in California and Utah, outfitted with a carbon fiber lens hood -- what else? The camera is being worked by Ketch Rossi Steve Gibby, who indicates the camera is "amazingly light," that "the finish of the stuff is spot-on," and even the menus are "straightforward and easy to navigate." Encouraging? Yes, if you have the money to spend. If you don't, enjoy the video below and then click on the Vimeo source link for a bunch more, including one of the thing coming out of the box and getting assembled.<br />

Remember just earlier this month when OffHollywood studio head Mark Pederson <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/18/first-hand-machined-red-epic-ships-gets-lovingly-toyed-with/">became the first man to own a RED EPIC</a>? Well, now his $58,000 &uuml;ber camera is gone. According to REDUSER forums, the EPIC was heisted last night along with some cash from Pederson's chalet in France while he and his family were sleeping. Pederson shares on the forum that "there was a forced entry through the front door. The thieves actually entered the master bedroom while my in-laws were sleeping, and standing a foot from their bed - emptied wallet and purse. There were 6 children and 8 adults sleeping in the house." That's a scary caper worthy of a Hollywood script for sure, but thankfully no one was hurt. Here's hoping the movie-like storyline continues now with law enforcement gumshoes actually cracking the case. In the meantime, maybe Peter Jackson can lend Pederson one of his <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">30 RED EPICs</a> until his own baby returns. <br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>We just got word that RED honcho Jim Jannard is offering $100,000 to anyone who can provide information leading to the recovery of the device and a conviction of the thieves. In his words (from the RED forums): "We are now offering $100,000 for the safe return of EPIC #00006 and the rest of the system including the media with Mark's files... and the arrest and conviction of those that broke into Mark's chalet in France. We will ONLY pay this amount if there is an arrest and conviction of the parties as we are not interested to be ransomed by thieves." Now that is seriously putting your money where your mouth is!<br />

This <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/REDEPIC/">RED EPIC</a> belongs to Mark Pederson -- the head of studio OffHollywood -- who was apparently the very first one to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">drop $58,000 for the pre-production 5K camera</a>, not to mention the first to lay down money for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/01/first-25-red-one-cameras-ship/">the original one</a>. In case you've arranged to find yourself with a similarly jawdropping Christmas present in the mail, you can find pictures of what to expect at our source links below. The links will also do quite nicely if you haven't experienced that feeling called "jealousy" in a while and would like a refresher course. <br />

<strong>Update:</strong> OffHollywood is shooting up a storm with the EPIC-M right now, and you'll find more gorgeous pics and impressions at REDUSER and their Twitter account.<br />

You know that untitled <em>Spider-man</em> project that's set to revitalize the franchise at some point in 2012? Yeah, that's being shot in 3D (not news) using <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/3ality">3ality</a> rigs and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/redepic">RED EPIC</a> cameras (superhotawesome news). Peter Jackson already scooped up <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">30 EPICs</a> to help him shoot his next big venture, <em>The Hobbit</em>, in 3D, but he's been beaten to the digital cinematography punch by the producers of the next Spidey flick, who have cornered a quartet of the cameras and actually started shooting with them on set yesterday. John Schwartzman, the dude responsible for filming the whole thing, has been extolling the virtues of using such fancy gear over on the RED forums, which is also where he promises his crew will be making further comments detailing the user experience. In slightly less thrilling RED news, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/red-founder-jim-jannard-calls-prosumer-scarlet-a-mistake/">Scarlet</a> S35 is being renamed to the EPIC Lite and will suffer the upheaval of having its features and price changed -- hit the links below for more.<br />

We're still slightly bummed that Peter Jackson <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/02/real-life-halo-warthog-goes-for-a-test-drive/">never made <em>Halo</em></a>, but this should patch things up a tad -- the <em>Lord of the Rings</em> director will film <em>The Hobbit</em> in 3D entirely on thirty hand-machined <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/REDEPIC/">RED EPIC</a> cameras, starting early next year. That's the news straight from RED founder Jim Jannard, but that's not all, as a limited number of pre-production EPIC packages will be available to early adopters as well. $58,000 buys your deep-pocketed budding director a machined EPIC-M body, titanium PL mount, Bomb EVF and 5-inch touchscreen LCD, a REDmote, a four-pack of batteries, a charger and a solid state storage module with a four-pack of 128GB SSDs. Jannard expects to hand-assemble that first batch of 5K imagers in December or January, start the real assembly lines a month after that, and hopefully have widespread availability by NAB in April, though he's not making any promises there. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/06/red-says-epic-camera-is-back-on-track-scarlet-to-follow-before/">That's how RED rolls</a>. PR after the break.<br />

That's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EPIC/">EPIC</a>, mind you, not necessarily <em>epic</em>. Sure, Red's experiment in HDR video looks like it'll be a help to filmmakers that want the power / flexibility of RAW in post and some tools to war against motion blur, but so far they aren't showing any of that ultra-surreal HDR stuff we known so well from Flickr. What's that you say? You don't want all your videos to look like they're <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/09/hdr-video-accomplished-using-dual-5d-mark-iis-is-exactly-what-i/">populated by radioactive creatures on a planet with a dying sun</a>? You disappoint us, person. Go to your room. EPIC can shoot up to 18 stops of dynamic range in motion, with an "HDR" mode for in camera processing and an "HDRx" mode (seen here) for manipulation in post. Hit up the source link for the full res download and in-depth discussion about the tech, or hit below the fold for an embedded copy of the vid.<br />

The two-second video after the break may not seem like much -- a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/RED/">RED</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EPIC/">EPIC</a> S35 with a 85mm Canon lens changing its focus from a box at a distance to a hand being moved in front of the lens ("closer than close focus," according to "Fire Chief" Jarred Land). What's more interesting here is what was used to take the video. In the same forum thread that unveiled the footage, employees claimed it was shot using the RED <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Scarlet/">Scarlet</a> 2/3" and provided the above pic as proof: Scarlet is above, EPIC on the bottom, and a standard pocket camera capturing the moment. Not a lot to glean from the video and no definitive update <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/06/red-says-epic-camera-is-back-on-track-scarlet-to-follow-before/">on the production schedule</a>, but hey, take solace in knowing a Canon mount for EPIC is ready and will be therefore presumably be available when the camera does eventually find its way out the door. Video and larger version of above pic after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/09/red-scarlet-makes-surprise-cameo-filming-epics-fast-focus/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED Scarlet makes surprise cameo filming EPIC's fast focus</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/09/red-scarlet-makes-surprise-cameo-filming-epics-fast-focus/">RED Scarlet makes surprise cameo filming EPIC's fast focus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 09 Aug 2010 22:33:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">RED may have shown off a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/15/working-red-epic-camera-demonstrated-at-nab-2010/">working EPIC camera</a> at NAB back in April, but a serious bug has prevented the camera from actually going into production -- to the point which RED founder Jim Jannard himself says that they're not just behind schedule anymore, they are "embarrassingly late." He now says that the company has managed to nail the bug, however, and that the camera is back on track to head into production... sometime. Jannard also assures us that production of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,scarlet">Scarlet</a> camera (also affected by the bug) will then follow, although that depends on "how fast we can get EPIC production rolling and solid" -- he did later add that he expects it to be sometime before the end of the year, though.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/06/red-says-epic-camera-is-back-on-track-scarlet-to-follow-before/">RED says EPIC camera is back on track, Scarlet to follow before end of 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 06 Jul 2010 13:23:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Well, RED <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/red-station-makes-modular-storage-look-good/">promised</a> that it would be demonstrating a working <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">RED EPIC</a> camera at this year's NAB show, and it's now delivered. In case you're not up to speed on all things RED, the EPIC is a 5k camera, and can be used in a whole range of different configurations from a small handheld setup for video or still photos, to a fully-outfitted camera rig suitable for a feature film. Head on past the break for a pair of videos from the Scarlet User Podcast, and hit up the source link below for plenty more shots of the camera -- not to mention some accessories including the just-announced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/red-station-makes-modular-storage-look-good/">RED Station</a>.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">ARRI may have attracted the majority of attention from camera nerds at this year's NAB show with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/alexa">ALEXA</a> camera, but RED is making a respectable showing itself, and has now introduced its new RED Station modular storage unit. That consists of a typically RED-looking base station, along with either a CompactFlash card reader module or a 2.5-inch SSD / hard drive reader, or both. Each of those modules also naturally packs an ample supply of ports, including not one but two FireWire 800 ports, and a single eSATA and mini USB port. Of course, all that doesn't exactly come cheap, with each piece of the puzzle set to run about $250 when they roll out on April 16th. RED isn't quite done with NAB just yet, however, as it also plans to show off a working <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">EPIC</a> camera at the show.</div>

Here we are at last. RED has finally dropped the full specs of at least one its "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,scarlet">Digital Stills and Motion Cameras</a>." And what did you expect? RED has naturally blown this thing out. The first camera to be released will be the insanely high-end EPIC-X, which will come out in four stages and retails for $28,000 (ouch). A pre-production "TATTOO" version will hit this year, followed by a production model for pre-existing RED owners next year, a release after that for RED trade-ins and then finally a widespread release. Meanwhile the Scarlet 2/3-inch camera (which is much more akin to current video-shooting DSLRs, though it doesn't have a full frame sensor) hasn't been given a price range or a release window, but promises to please with dual XLR inputs, electronic lens interoperability with RED, Canon and Nikon lenses (adapters required) and 1080p shooting at 60 fps. One great function shared between the cameras is the ability to operate the camera with a touchscreen and perform "touch focus tracking." So, now that we've frightened off all but the die-hards with a hint at pricing and some vaguely defined functionality, let's let the bullet points take it away after the break:<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/red-dsmc-specs-detailed-prices-start-at-28-000-for-epix-x-low/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED DSMC specs detailed, prices start at $28,000 for EPIC-X, lower-end Scarlet still vague</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/red-dsmc-specs-detailed-prices-start-at-28-000-for-epix-x-low/">RED DSMC specs detailed, prices start at $28,000 for EPIC-X, lower-end Scarlet still vague</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 19:29:00 EST. When RED's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,scarlet">Scarlet</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">EPIC</a> camera bodies finally <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/13/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/">became official</a> late last year (after seemingly endless teasing) they were pictured with an almost farcical array of accessories. Nearly a year on and neither of the bodies nor any of those add-ons are available, but you can at least now get a higher-res look at all that wallet-tapping accoutrement. Pictured are the REDVOLT battery pack and its hot-swappable cells, the wireless REDMOTE controller, the BOMB EVF, a display screen, and even a rifle-like stock called the RED GUNNER. Some of these we've already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/05/red-shows-off-dsmc-cam-configurations-in-the-flesh-new-lenses/">seen in the flesh</a>, others haven't been rendered with this much detail before, and sifting through the <em>REDUSER.net</em> forum where they were posted uncovers some other morsels to whet the appetites of photographers who like extreme stylistic touches. The juiciest is a mention that the release dates for EPIC and Scarlet will be announced in October -- which doesn't leave much time for a 2009 debut for the cameras themselves. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-and-epic/">RED Scarlet and EPIC</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-and-epic/#2320773"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/redwatermark-20090928-800-200001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-and-epic/#2320774"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/redwatermark-20090928-800-200002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-and-epic/#2320775"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/redwatermark-20090928-800-200003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-and-epic/#2320776"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/redwatermark-20090928-800-200004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-and-epic/#2320777"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/redwatermark-20090928-800-200005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Thanks, weaksauce12]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/28/red-releases-high-res-images-of-accessories-no-actual-accessori/">RED releases high-res images of accessories, no actual accessories</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 07:32:00 EST. RED fans have been getting quite an eyeful this week in the company's forums, as Jim Jannard and crew have been posting all kinds of sneak peeks at the company's latest gear -- including a few configurations of the modular <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/13/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/">DSMC EPIC and Scarlet systems</a> in action. The company is also working on super-high-end prime lenses for their cameras that supposedly outperform every other test lens the company has in its possession -- Jannard says "it isn't close." As usual, RED doesn't say when any of this is coming out, but it's definitely enough to make a camera geek's hair stand on end -- check it all out in the gallery.<br /><br />[Thanks, Jun-Dai]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-renders-and-prototypes/">RED renders and prototypes</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-renders-and-prototypes/#1411218"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/03/2009-03-05redstuff-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-renders-and-prototypes/#1411219"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/03/2009-03-05redstuff-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-renders-and-prototypes/#1411220"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/03/2009-03-05redstuff-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-renders-and-prototypes/#1411221"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/03/2009-03-05redstuff-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-renders-and-prototypes/#1411222"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/03/2009-03-05redstuff-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <br /> <a href="http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=27033">Read</a> - Prototypes configurations thread<br /> <a href="http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=27080">Read</a> - Prime lenses thread<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/05/red-shows-off-dsmc-cam-configurations-in-the-flesh-new-lenses/">RED shows off DSMC cam configurations in the flesh, new lenses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 15:04:00 EST. RED's "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/25/red-making-big-change-announcement-on-december-3rd/">big change</a>" announcement is out. The good news: no more waiting. Unfortunately, that's about it -- <strike>still no <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/13/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/">DSMC configuration</a> for the general consumer</strike>. The rest of the news is targeted at professional film makers which, really should be expected if only these lustful hearts could be contained. With Jannard's team recently overcoming some sensor and electronics limitations, the specs and prices for the Scarlet and EPIC systems have been juggled resulting in a new, stretched delivery schedule. Judging by reactions in the RED USER forums, the changes are welcome if only vaguely understood for a system that only exists on paper (outside of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red%20one">RED ONE</a>) for the time being. Now go ahead and hit the read link for the specifics of what changed -- and with 1,048,576 possible configurations to this modular camera system, you'd better bring help.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: After reviewing the 1 million configs, we did find something noteworthy: the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/1155677/">previously TBD price</a> of the 2/3-inch 8x fixed zoom 3K Scarlet is now priced at $3,750 when it ships as a "complete kit" with brain and lens sometime in the Fall of 2009. It looks like it should also be compatible with lenses from Canon and Nikon via an optional interchangeable lens mount. As previously announced, the "brain" alone costs $2,500. That officially puts RED within fighting distance of the 1080p-capable <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/5d+mark+ii/">Canon EOS 5D Mark II</a> for the prosumer's dollar. Relevant components pictured after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks, Ben]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/03/reds-big-change-announcement-is-big-for-pros-disappointing-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED's 'big change' announcement is actually kind of big (updated)</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/03/reds-big-change-announcement-is-big-for-pros-disappointing-f/">RED's 'big change' announcement is actually kind of big (updated)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 06:41:00 EST. At the risk of becoming RED's marketing pawn, we'd be remiss to the gadget community by ignoring <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/jim%20jannard">Jim Jannard</a>'s latest attention begging tease. Titled simply, "Big Change...," Jannard writes, "New announcement on Dec. 3rd. Everything has changed... just as we promised." This comes after revealing "several nice breakthroughs" related to Scarlet and EPIC in the REDUSER forums. JJ then amps up the hype by calling the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/13/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/">November 13th announcement</a> of RED's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dsmc">Digital Still and Motion Camera</a> (DSMC) system "insignificant" by comparison. Ok Jim, we'll be at your beck and call. But you'd better show up on the 3rd with something priced more competitively to Canon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/eos%205d%20mark%20ii">EOS 5D Mark II</a> if you expect us to consider your modular SLR / HD video camera anything other than a novelty for the consumer or prosumer markets. The system starts with your choice of the professional Scarlet or "master professional" EPIC brains which can then be bunged into about 2,251,799,813,685,248 possible camera configurations, RED only half-jokingly chides. The brains are built upon Mysterium-X and Mysterium Monstro sensors which start at 2/3-inch and end at a whopping 6x17-cm -- when a new sensor comes out you just upgrade the brain. Scarlet will launch in 4 choices ranging from $2,500 (and possibly less) to $12,000 with a variety of lens mounts (yes, Canon and Nikon) capable of shooting 3K @120fps on up to 6K @30fps. Epic will offer similar mounts with capabilities spanning 5K @100fps ($28k) to 9K @50fps ($45k) -- a 28K system hitting 25fps is expected in 2010 for $55k. Still image resolutions will range from 4.9 megapixels to a freakish 261 megapixels. The first Scarlet systems could come as early as Spring of 2009 while EPIC should arrive by summer. Of course, the brain is just the beginning of the costs. RED also introduced a 3D camera today in true, "one more thing" fashion. See all the details in the gallery below, 3D camera after the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/">RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera System now official</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155678"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-1-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155687"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-11-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155684"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-12-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155683"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-13-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155680"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-14-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/13/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera System now official</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/13/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/">RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera System now official</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 04:50:00 EST. Still image resolutions will range from 4.9 megapixels to a freakish 261 megapixels. The first Scarlet systems could come as early as Spring of 2009 while EPIC should arrive by summer. Of course, the brain is just the beginning of the costs. RED also introduced a 3D camera configuration today in true, "one more thing" fashion. See all the details in the gallery below, 3D camera after the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/">RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera System now official</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155678"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-1-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155687"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-11-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155684"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-12-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155683"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-13-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/#1155680"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/11/red-dsmcpicture-14-13nov08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/13/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera System now official</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/13/reds-digital-still-and-motion-camera-system-now-official/">RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera System now official</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 04:50:00 EST. We've less than a week before <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/RED/">RED</a> announces something special on November 13th, but it's not letting you creep any closer to that magical day without two more teases (one after the break) beforehand. As it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/06/red-teases-with-yet-another-mysterious-image/">already done</a> on a number of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/03/red-teases-some-more-in-preparation-for-november-13th/">occasions</a>, RED's Jim Jannard has posted up a new duo of teasers of the purported <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/27/red-announcing-dsmc-dslr-replacement-on-november-13/">DSMC</a> (Digital Still &amp; Motion Camera) DSLR, this time showing off a number of ports that you're surely anxious to slip your connectors into. Oh please, get your mind out of the gutter.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/10/red-teases-again-with-exposed-ports/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED teases again with exposed ports</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/10/red-teases-again-with-exposed-ports/">RED teases again with exposed ports</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 Nov 2008 06:35:00 EST. <div align="left">The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red">RED</a> folks sure do like to tease out their upcoming products -- and occasionally even lead folks astray -- and it looks like they're really pulling out all the stops for their forthcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/27/red-announcing-dsmc-dslr-replacement-on-november-13/">Scarlet and Epic announcements</a>. That includes a slightly perplexing teaser image released a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/03/red-teases-some-more-in-preparation-for-november-13th/">few days ago</a> and now this new, even more confounding image, again posted on the Reduser forums by RED founder Jim Jannard himself. While speculation abounds, no one seems to have quite pegged down exactly what it is, or if it actually is something at all, so feel free to take your own shot at it in comments. </div>

In addition to that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/14/red-unveils-scarlet-mini-camcorder/">Scarlet</a> 3K "pocket" camera, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/REDONE/">RED ONE</a> is getting seriously one-upped by the new top-of-the-line RED EPIC. This 5K camera has a full-frame S35mm Mysterium X sensor, and pretty much matches 35mm film resolution -- RED ONE topped out at 4K. FPS is limited to 100, which is to be expected with all those pixels to handle, but other features match that of other RED cams. Of course, the promise of the RED ONE "rendering obsolescence obsolete" has been slightly trampled by EPIC, but the good news is that RED will allow ONE customers to trade in their cameras for a full $17,500 credit towards the EPIC when it ships in 2009. Price? About $30,000.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/14/red-shows-off-5k-epic-camera/">RED shows off 5K EPIC camera</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 13:11:00 EST.
