It just takes time to "settle in" to the strange new ultra-realistic world of high frame-rates, according to Peter Jackson, who's been responding to audience's rather <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/25/hobbit-Cinemacon-48fps-screening-frame-rate-debate/">strong panning</a> of 48fps rough cuts from his upcoming 3D epic, <em>Hobbit</em>. Viewers' main beefs were the surprising appearance of the higher cadence footage, which almost looked like it was shot on video, as well as blemishes on actors and sets which were all-too-visible without the crutch of motion blur. But Jackson insists that the footage lacked special effects and color correction, and that the showing was perhaps too short to judge the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/25/peter-jackson-shooting-the-hobbit-at-48fps-should-speed-up-thos/">frame-rate</a> -- which is why he also says there'll be no 48 fps trailer. He even adds that he's now "very aware of the strobing, the flicker and the artifacts" when he's watching regular 24fps cinema -- so the real struggle for audiences might not be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/26/true-grit-cinematographer-roger-deakins-makes-jump-to-digital/">adjusting</a> to the new way, but going back to the old.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/30/peter-jackson-hobbit-48fps/">Peter Jackson unfazed by 'Hobbit' footage pushback, but will stick to 24 fps for trailers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 08:44:00 EST. It looks like it's getting there, with a magenta variant spotted at Finnish retailer, <em>Gigantti</em>. At the moment, availability is posited for the vague area of May -- matching those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/25/nokia-reportedly-delays-lumia-900-release-in-the-uk-cites-high/">mid-month dates</a> we've been hearing -- but the site is still taking pre-orders ahead of any concrete launch day. The company just demoed some pretty nifty module updates, including an OLED EVF, a new 9-inch touchscreen and the crown jewel Meizler Module, which brings to the table such features as wireless 1080p transmission, a wireless timecode transceiver and full wireless lens control -- we're particularly taken with that last feature, which effectively enables remote-controlled follow focus, aperture and zoom control. The new 9-inch will also come in handy with wireless control, making it easier to verify sharpness and exposure. It features the same touch functionality of its smaller sibling, giving you full control of the camera.</p><p> The display will likely draw some attention when mounted on an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EPIC/">EPIC</a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">,</a> which is noticeably smaller than the LCD itself, but once you toss on a lens and power pack, the rig looks slightly better proportioned. That's the good news. The bad news is the price -- you're looking at a cool $13,000 for that wireless module, which is named after its designer, assistant camera Steven Meizler, while the Bomb OLED EVF can be had as an upgrade for $1,200 (if you're willing to trade in your LCD version), or $3,900 if you plan to buy it outright. You can head over to the Red Store to pick that device up today, though you'll need to hang tight for the Meizler and 9-inch LCD, both of which are expected to launch later this year. You'll get an up-close look at all the new gear in the gallery below, and you'll also find a video overview with RED's Ted Schilowitz when you venture past the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-9-inch-touchscreen-oled-evf-and-meizler-module-eyes-on/">RED 9-inch touchscreen, OLED EVF and Meizler Module eyes-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-9-inch-touchscreen-oled-evf-and-meizler-module-eyes-on/#4966574"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red001-1334612091_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-9-inch-touchscreen-oled-evf-and-meizler-module-eyes-on/#4966575"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red002-1334612091_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-9-inch-touchscreen-oled-evf-and-meizler-module-eyes-on/#4966576"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red003-1334612092_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-9-inch-touchscreen-oled-evf-and-meizler-module-eyes-on/#4966577"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red004-1334612093_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-9-inch-touchscreen-oled-evf-and-meizler-module-eyes-on/#4966578"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red005-1334612094_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-epic-oled-evf-9-inch-touchscreen/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED 9-inch touchscreen, OLED EVF and Meizler Module eyes-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-epic-oled-evf-9-inch-touchscreen/">RED 9-inch touchscreen, OLED EVF and Meizler Module eyes-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 17:39:00 EST. The sensor module was on display at the company's NAB booth today, under a backlit case that could only have been designed to make photographing the new chip a near-impossible task. We did manage to snag a few frames of the device, which appears as a mere silhouette to the naked eye. Sensors aren't designed for us to look at, however -- they're supposed to do the looking -- so we won't get any more hung up on the presentation. Existing RED camera owners can look forward to an incredibly impressive 15+ stops of native dynamic range and up to 120 frames-per-second at resolutions up to 5K. And as we discovered earlier today, the upgrade will roll out to EPIC owners sometime in 2012 for $6,000 while Scarlet users will need to hang tight for a release date, and a price tag. That's all we've got as far as details go, so click on through the gallery below for a flashlight-enhanced peek at the Dragon.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/">RED Dragon 6K sensor upgrade hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966138"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red001-1334600249_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966139"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red002-1334600251_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966140"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red003-1334600252_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966141"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red004-1334600253_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade-hands-on/#4966142"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red005-1334600254_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED Dragon 6K sensor upgrade eyes-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-dragon-6k-sensor-upgrade/">RED Dragon 6K sensor upgrade eyes-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 14:34:00 EST. That's likely the thinking behind the REDray, the 4K laser cinema projector making an appearance at the company's NAB booth today. The device supports 2D and passive 3D (up to 120fps in 3D mode), with 4K projection for each eye and has a rated laser life of over 25,000 hours. While the device itself is likely to be hidden behind glass in an elevated projector room, the REDray has the same industrial look and feel of its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/02/reds-scarlet-x-4k-camera-video-review/">Scarlet</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/05/red-epic-scores-a-canon-eos-mount-vincent-laforet-gets-some-awe">Epic</a> capturing counterparts, with a solid matte metal construction, heavy duty bolts and dedicated access panels for the lens filter, the laser phase adjustment oscillator and the angular refraction aberration indexer. There's also a T1.8 50mm lens mounted up front, sufficiently completing the beautifully monstrous package. Also on display was the tablet-controlled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-teases-4k-redray-player-and-projector/">REDray Player</a>, which includes four HDMI 1.4 video outputs with 7.1-channel audio output, the ability to move 4K video to the internal hard drive and an SD reader for ingesting content. You'll also find dual gigabit Ethernet ports, along with USB and eSATA connectors.</p><p> The projector experience is much less about the hardware than it is the projections themselves, which certainly did a justice here -- especially considering the imaging device's mid-development status. During a screening of the 3D short <em>Loom</em>, which was shot with the RED Epic, images looked fantastic with accurate color and excellent dynamic range, allowing us to see every detail in a contrasty dark scene, where we were able to make out a very dimly lit female actress. The projection was incredibly sharp on the 24-<strike>inch</strike> foot screen, despite the film being displayed with 2K for each eye, rather than the maximum 4K. There will be two versions of the REDray projector, including a home theater flavor that supports screens up to 15 feet in size that'll ring in at under $10,000, and a professional model with support for larger venues. RED CEO Jim Jannard confirmed that the home-bound version will ship sometime this year, though he was unable to provide a more precise ship date. We weren't permitted to record video during the screening -- which is for the best, considering that there's really no way to do this thing justice -- but you can still flip through the gallery below for an early look at REDray.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/">REDray 4K cinema laser projector eyes-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965722"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965723"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965724"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965725"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/redray-4k-cinema-laser-projector-eyes-on/#4965726"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/red005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/redray-4k-cinema-laser-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>REDray 4K cinema laser projector and player eyes-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/redray-4k-cinema-laser-hands-on/">REDray 4K cinema laser projector and player eyes-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 13:39:00 EST. Good, because <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-teases-4k-redray-player-and-projector/">RED's</a> announcing the RED Dragon upgrade kit that'll bolt onto your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/10/red-epic-shoots-birds-at-96fps-no-dog-needed-to-retrieve-them/">EPIC</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/02/reds-scarlet-x-4k-camera-video-review/">Scarlet</a> camera to provide resolutions of 6K at 85fps or 5k at 120fps with 15+ stops of Dynamic Range. Company founder <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/red-founder-jim-jannard-calls-prosumer-scarlet-a-mistake/">Jim Jannard</a> has said that the sensor is slightly larger than that of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/14/red-one-mysterium-x-cameras-now-available-for-all/">Mysterium-X</a>, but the pixel size is smaller, promising that "most of the current lenses will work" with the new hardware. It'll cost EPIC users $6,000 and arrive "late in the year," but bad news if you've got a Scarlet: it's back of the queue time for you until 2013, with no word on what it'll cost you, either.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/16/red-dragon-upgrade/">RED unveils Dragon sensor upgrade, turns Epic and Scarlet into a 6K camera</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 06:07:00 EST. Try $9,000. That's the expected price of Sony's rumored NEX-FS700E, which could launch at NAB next month with a June ship date. <em>EOSHD</em> reports that the camera will pipe 4K video to a dedicated external recorder over 3G HD-SDI. It will reportedly use the same NEX E-mount as its predecessor, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/sony-nex-fs100-review/">FS100</a>, and may include a trio of neutral density filters to increase versatility. We haven't been able to track down an image of the rumored cinema cam (the model in that image above looks identical to the FS100), but we wouldn't be surprised to see another detail or two leak out before the broadcast community's annual Vegas gathering kicks off in a little over two weeks. For its part, Canon is also <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/09/canon-teases-exclusive-screening-at-NAB/">expected to announce</a> a 4K EOS-format DSLR at NAB, as a less-expensive alternative to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-cinema-camera-hands-on-video/">$16,000 C300</a>, while <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/red-makes-the-scarlet-dsmc-official-5k-stills-and-4k-video-for/">RED's Scarlet</a> already has 4K capabilities, and a $9,000 price tag.<br /><br />[Thanks, Andrew]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/30/sony-nex-fs700e-4k-nab/">Sony to launch NEX-FS700E 4K cinema camera for $9,000 at NAB?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 13:36:00 EST. And do those pockets happen to be located in Japan? Well if you're also in the market for Canon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-cinema-camera-hands-on-video/">EOS C300</a> cinema camera, you might be in luck. The company has confirmed that its motion-picture-shooting flagship will be available in Japanese retail stores by January 31st -- exactly one week from today. As the story goes with expensive electronics in Japan, pricing is "open" at this point, meaning you might have to hit up a retailer for an amount before making two dozen trips to the ATM. But if money's no object (just that pesky release date), you should be on your way to making <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-makes-an-appearance-in-vincent-laforets-mobius-find/">Cinema EOS magic</a> before the month is out. And if your kit is best suited for the PL-mount version, expect that to ship in late March, "open" pricing in tow.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/canon-eos-c300-to-hit-japanese-stores-on-the-31st-pl-version-co/">Canon EOS C300 to hit Japanese stores on the 31st, PL version coming in March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 11:39:00 EST. And boy, this is one helluva camera we have this time. You may recall that last year we were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/working-red-scarlet-appears-at-our-trailer-we-go-hands-on-vid/">shown</a> a working Scarlet prototype with 3K video resolution and a fixed lens; but fast forward to 2012 and we have the Scarlet-X, a sturdy 4K beast that not only supports interchangeable lens, but it's also actually out on the market. Obviously, the $9,700 base price (excluding the Canon EF lens mount; Nikon and Leica mounts coming soon) is aimed at film studios instead of us regular Joes, but Ted was kind enough to spend a whole afternoon showing us all the goodness on the Scarlet-X -- we even got to play with it on the CES show floor, and unsurprisingly, this Red kit became quite the celebrity. Read on to find out how we got on with it.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-x-4k-camera-hands-on/">RED Scarlet-X 4K camera hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-x-4k-camera-hands-on/#4742979"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/red-scarlet-x-g-2012-01-1218_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-x-4k-camera-hands-on/#4745805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/red-scarlet-x-g-2012-01-1222_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-x-4k-camera-hands-on/#4742956"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc0909_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-x-4k-camera-hands-on/#4743664"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/red-scarlet-x-g-2012-01-1221_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-scarlet-x-4k-camera-hands-on/#4745961"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/red-scarlet-x-g-2012-01-1223_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/13/a-red-scarlet-x-4k-tour-around-ces-2012-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Red Scarlet-X 4K tour around CES 2012 (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/13/a-red-scarlet-x-4k-tour-around-ces-2012-video/">A Red Scarlet-X 4K tour around CES 2012 (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 21:26:00 EST. If you've been to the movies lately, you've seen through Red eyes. This is some of the tastiest cinematic tech around -- some people like them so much, they've even been known to name them. Ted Schilowitz from Red swings by our stage at <strong>5:30PM ET</strong>, and we can't wait.<br />

What do you find when you tear open (read: carefully disassemble) a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/04/red-epic-x-starts-shipping-to-lucky-shooters-with-deep-pockets/">Red Epic-X</a>? Well, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/red-epic-m-gets-torn-down-by-the-fcc-so-you-dont-have-to/">a whole lot of red</a>, as it seems. <em>Wireless Goodness</em> has posted a hearty collection of teardown shots that it acquired from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FCC/">FCC</a>, revealing the camera's Mysterium-X sensor and Red 1242 processor. Sure, the Epic-X has been on the market for quite a few months now, but as you might imagine, those lucky enough to actually get their hands on the somewhat-elusive $34,500 rig probably don't list a warranty-crushing teardown at the top of their to-do lists. Ready to take a peek inside? Hit up the source link for 57 gloriously detailed shots from the other side.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/12/red-epic-x-gets-disassembled-photographed-by-fcc/">Red Epic-X gets disassembled, photographed by FCC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 08:41:00 EST. It's powered by a Falconbird LSI chip, toting a 10 x optical zoom and a 0.5-inch 8-megapixel CMOS that'll record footage at a resolution of 3840 x 2160. The chip's USP is its ability to process the footage as it's being recorded rather than storing it for post processing later. It'll compress the video down enough, in real time, that you'll be able to store up to two hours of 4K video on sufficiently equipped SDHC card. You can also crop out images on the 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen. It'll set you back $5,000 when it arrives in March and at that price, we'll take two (oh, and there's a PR for you, after the break).</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/jvc-4k-camcorder/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>JVC's 4K camcorder begins making throat-cutting motions towards the RED Scarlet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/jvc-4k-camcorder/">JVC's 4K camcorder begins making throat-cutting motions towards the RED Scarlet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 17:05:00 EST. Native 4K recording? Check. A built-for-war body? You bet. Backordered despite a downright shocking $11,700 price tag? Most certainly. As with Red's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/red-makes-the-scarlet-dsmc-official-5k-stills-and-4k-video-for/">prior</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/04/red-epic-x-starts-shipping-to-lucky-shooters-with-deep-pockets/">products</a>, the Scarlet-X seems to be wowing just about every shooter lucky enough to come into contact with one. Luck for you, the folks over at <i>Cinema5D</i> have spent an inordinate of amount of time with this beast in order to deliver the full skinny on whether it's worth the price (and wait). We won't bother spoiling any conclusions for you, but if you've been toying with the idea of blowing your (and your SO's) bonus on one of these in a bid to start your own movie house, there's a vid just after the break that deserves your attention.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/02/reds-scarlet-x-4k-camera-video-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Red's Scarlet-X 4K camera gets video review: you've never needed $11,700 so badly</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/02/reds-scarlet-x-4k-camera-video-review/">Red's Scarlet-X 4K camera gets video review: you've never needed $11,700 so badly</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 02 Jan 2012 20:08:00 EST. The behind-the-lens drama between camera makers <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red">Red Digital Cinema</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/arri/">Arri</a> has taken yet another step recently, as Red filed suit December 21st against Arri alleging corporate espionage. Former Arri executive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/23/former-arri-exec-pleads-guilty-to-hacking-into-rival-ceos-e-mai/">Michael Bravin has already plead guilty to criminal charges</a> that he illegally accessed emails at his previous employer, camera distributor Band Pro Film &amp; Digital. At the time Red founder Jim Jannard also revealed his personal account had been compromised, and now <i>The Wrap</i> reports the company is accusing Arri of "unfair competition based on email hacking, invasion of privacy, conversion, misappropriation of trade secrets and unlawful trade practices, among other charges". The extra charges come as a result of information it has indicating other Arri executives were aware of the hacking. Other than listening in on conversations between Red and Band Pro, Arri also stands accused of launching a false advertising campaign ahead of the launch of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/17/arri-alexa-joins-red-to-kill-celluloid-in-2010/">Alexa</a>, while Bravin posted with a pseudonym on RedUser.net. Hit the source link for additional details on the sordid affair, we'll find out what can be proven if / when Red gets the jury trial it's seeking.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/01/red-digital-cinema-sues-competitor-arri-over-e-mail-hacking-add/">Red Digital Cinema sues competitor Arri over e-mail hacking, adds new charges to the list</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 01 Jan 2012 04:04:00 EST. The bad news: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/05/oxford-neuroscientists-shock-the-parietal-lobe-improve-math-sco/">Math</a> will always judge you. The good news: It'll still be there to judge everyone else. In a recent article published in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/homeplug-and-ieee-want-our-home-networks-to-play-nice-talk-to-e/">IEEE</a> Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/15/mit-unveils-computer-chip-that-thinks-like-the-human-brain-skyn/">MIT</a>'s Professor Jonathan How and three colleagues announced they've created an algorithm that can predict whether an oncoming car is about to run a red light one or two seconds before a possible collision. The algorithm can compute the likelihood of a vehicle running a red light based on its rate of deceleration as it is approaching the intersection with a level of precision down to mere milliseconds. The team, which applied the algorithm to more than 15,000 vehicles during the study, used instruments that monitored vehicle speeds and locations as well as when the lights turned red. When the results were tallied, they found that they were able to correctly predict who would run a red light 85 percent of the time. In other news, MIT is working on a much simpler algorithm capable of predicting when your significant other will break up with you, the formula factoring in at least four behavioral elements from the last season of "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/22/dell-pulls-ads-from-jersey-shore-calls-show-derogatony-video/">Jersey Shore</a>."</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/02/mit-created-algorithm-predicts-likelihood-of-running-red-lights/">MIT-created algorithm predicts likelihood of running red lights, places blame where appropriate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 02 Dec 2011 05:01:00 EST. Announced at a curiously-timed event just minutes after <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-launches-c300-cinema-camera-prepares-to-take-on-red-scarl/">Canon's C300</a> made its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/the-canon-hollywood-event-liveblog/">on-stage debut</a>, we expected the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/red-makes-the-scarlet-dsmc-official-5k-stills-and-4k-video-for/">RED Scarlet</a> to be a hit with cinematographers the world abound. But we're perhaps even more impressed to see one actually make its way to a customer just two weeks after launch, than we were when RED revealed the 4K cam's low $9,750 price tag. Rental service owner Tonaci Tran (pictured front and center above) is the lucky winner, and if you happen to have a Scarlet loan scheduled with him, you could be too. Haven't had enough of the 4096 x 2160-pixel 4K cam? Diet and filmmaking legend <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">Peter Jackson's</a> given us another insight into the making of the <em>Hobbit</em> movies, and this time he's talking about his envious collection of tech. Filming with no less than 48 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/14/red-shows-off-5k-epic-camera/">Red Epic</a> cameras at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/25/peter-jackson-shooting-the-hobbit-at-48fps-should-speed-up-thos/">48fps</a> in full 5k resolution might sound fantastic, but it hasn't all been a bed of cotton candy. Two 3D cameras need to be mounted at the same "interocular" (the inch-or-so distance between your eyes) which is impossible given the size of the Epic and its lenses. The team had to hire specialist firm 3ality to build a rig where one camera shoots the action and the other is pointed vertically at a mirror. Those who would love to shoot with an Epic should also beware that the cameras naturally desaturate the action to such an extent that the makeup, costume and set design teams have to over-color everything to look natural in post production. For more interesting facts, head down past the break to catch the video in full, and try not to imagine how many years bad luck you'd get if you broke one of those mirrors during a key scene.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/05/peter-jackson-reveals-the-red-epic-secrets-behind-the-hobbit-vi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Peter Jackson reveals the Red Epic secrets behind The Hobbit (video)</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/05/peter-jackson-reveals-the-red-epic-secrets-behind-the-hobbit-vi/">Peter Jackson reveals the Red Epic secrets behind The Hobbit (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 05 Nov 2011 04:08:00 EST. It's been quite a day for all you cinephiles out there. First Canon outed its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-launches-c300-cinema-camera-prepares-to-take-on-red-scarl/">pair</a> of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-has-a-new-eos-movies-dslr-on-the-way-too/">Cinema EOS</a> cameras, and now RED has finally released the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">Epic's</a> baby sister <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red+scarlet/">Scarlet</a>. Scarlet packs a similar punch as her older brother, so she takes 5K (5120 x 2700) resolution stills at 12fps, or can shoot your next cinematic masterpiece in 4K (4096 x 2160) at 25fps. The Scarlet also can use all of the Epic's accessories and comes with a Canon mount so there's plenty of glass to choose from, too. Best of all, Scarlet can be all yours for the low price of $9,750. That's right, for the price of a used Honda Civic, you can shoot video that essentially looks as good as those made by pros like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/28/peter-jackson-nabs-thirty-red-epic-cameras-to-film-the-hobbit-t/">Peter Jackson</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/07/spider-man-reboot-is-being-shot-in-red-epic-3d-has-jason-schwar/">John Shwartzman</a> (assuming you've got their moviemaking skills). We're about to get our hands on one, so stay tuned for our first impressions.<br />
<br />
When she's all by herself, Scarlet cuts a rather petite figure. She weighs the same as an Epic, but trades her elder brother's ebony exterior for one that is, according to RED founder Jim Jannard, "battleship gray." Not the most feminine color, but we must admit we like the two-tone appearance when you start adding on extras like a RED remote or an external view screen. Unfortunately, we didn't get to shoot any video with Scarlet, but we did get to hold her for a bit and found the build quality to be top notch. The camera has a solid feel, and while we wouldn't want to lug it around all day by hand, it's easy enough to maneuver for several minutes at a time. We're hoping we can do some serious shooting with Scarlet with sometime soon for a fuller impression -- RED aims to start shipping them on December first -- but given her low price point and copious cinematic capabilities, we imagine her dance card will be filled for quite some time.<br />

Man, is this thing ugly. But when it comes to cinema cameras, looks are the last thing on a cinematographer's mind -- performance is where it counts, and with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-launches-c300-cinema-camera-prepares-to-take-on-red-scarl/">Canon C300</a>, its compact size is an asset as well. We haven't had a chance to shoot with Canon's new flagship cinema cam, but we've heard from plenty of folks who have, including director Vincent Laforet. The C300's incredibly compact size allows cinematographers to work in environments that aren't typically accessible to big rigs -- you can shoot with this camera just as easily as you can with a DSLR, hand-holding it for quick shots, with a waist-mounted Steadicam system for walk-around shoots or even mounting it on a small remote-controlled helicopter, as Laforet did during his <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-makes-an-appearance-in-vincent-laforets-mobius-find/">three-day <em>Mobius</em> shoot</a>.<br />
<br />
The C300 will be more familiar to cinematographers -- photojournalists may have access to the cam, thanks to its $20,000 price tag (that's a relative bargain, believe it or not), but you can't pick this up and fire away without taking some time to learn the interface. It has quite the solid feel, as you'd expect from a camera in this price range, though it's not as heavy as it looks -- you won't want to hold it in your hand for a full day of filming, but quick shots probably won't be an issue. The system is modular, so you can add and remove components as you wish -- industry standard connectors let you hook up cinema gear, which is something you could never do with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/5DMarkII/">5D Mark II</a>. The small form factor and price tag to match should help Canon gain some ground in Hollywood, but we'll wait for a chance to shoot some footage before drawing any firm conclusions. In the meantime, we'll have to take Laforet at his word -- which you'll find just past the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-hands-on/">Canon C300 hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-hands-on/#4583226"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-hands-on/#4583227"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-hands-on/#4583228"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-hands-on/#4583229"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-hands-on/#4583230"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-cinema-camera-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon C300 cinema camera hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-cinema-camera-hands-on-video/">Canon C300 cinema camera hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 21:55:00 EST. A <em>New York Times </em>photojournalist turned Hollywood director, Vincent Laforet has become synonymous with DSLR video, after his short film <em>Reverie</em> helped catapult Canon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/5DMarkII/">5D Mark II</a> into the world of digital filmmaking. And after playing such a significant role in launching that camera, we certainly weren't surprised to see Laforet make an appearance at today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/the-canon-hollywood-event-liveblog/">Canon Cinema event</a>, with his short film <em>Mobius</em> getting some time on the big screen. The film follows a photojournalist who stumbles upon a Cartel execution, but it also tells the story of Canon's tightly-veiled C300 cinema camera, which the company launched just moments ago. Laforet used a pre-production C300 (note the green tape button labels) to shoot <em>Mobius</em> in the Mojave Desert under a variety of harsh conditions, including powerful sunlight and near-darkness, in both extremely hot and chilly temperatures -- the camera appears to have performed extremely well, given both the remote shooting environment and tight production schedule.<br />
<br />
Canon has yet to reveal the C300's price tag, which we expect to far undercut the $120,000 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/red-one-faces-arri-alexa-in-high-res-choose-your-own-adventure/">Arri Alexa</a> kit, but its sheer portability makes it a more appealing option for filmmakers -- especially those with limited time and other resources. Laforet was able to shoot his film with a very small crew, since the C300 can be operated by just one photographer. The director used the camera mounted on a tripod, tethered to a variety of helicopters, sitting on the road and even hand-held, like a camcorder or DSLR. Laforet shot with Canon's new FK30-300 telephoto cine zoom PL-mount lens, along with a variety of EOS mount lenses, and notes that the camera's form factor makes it even easier to shoot with than a DSLR like the 5D Mark II. Its cost -- somewhere in the range of $20,000 -- should also put it within reach of not only Hollywood cinematographers, but also television directors and even documentary filmmakers and news photojournalists. We won't see the C300 hit the market until late January 2012, so jump past the break for a sneak peak at <em>Mobius</em> to see Canon's new cinema flagship, along with a rather comprehensive behind-the-scenes video.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/">Canon C300 shoot with Vincent Laforet</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581517"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-40_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581481"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581482"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-shoot-with-vincent-laforet/#4581483"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/2011-11-03-canonc300-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-makes-an-appearance-in-vincent-laforets-mobius-find/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon C300 makes an appearance in Vincent Laforet's Mobius, find the short and behind the scenes right here (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-makes-an-appearance-in-vincent-laforets-mobius-find/">Canon C300 makes an appearance in Vincent Laforet's Mobius, find the short and behind the scenes right here (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 20:28:00 EST. The imaging company just unveiled its C300 cinema camera at Hollywood's Paramount Studios, in front of a crowd of hundreds of journalists and film industry elite, including Martin Scorsese. Canon is no stranger to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/25/canon-eos-1d-x-hands-on-video/">professional photography community</a>, but it has yet to make a name for itself in Hollywood, where cameras such as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/07/arris-alexa-busts-out-native-prores-recording-plans-for-red-sm/">Arri Alexa</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/RedEpic/">RED EPIC </a>dominate the digital filmmaking world. The C300 may not appear to be overwhelmingly powerful on paper -- stock features include an EF <em>or</em> PL mount (not both), 1080p capture, a pair of CF card slots, timecode and HD-SDI output -- but judging by the sample films we saw today, its incredibly powerful sensor and versatile form factor are likely to play a more significant role in making this camera a success.<br /><br /><div class="follow_this_in_post"> <img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/more_info_header_1.gif" /><br /> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-has-a-new-eos-movies-dslr-on-the-way-too/">Canon has a new 'EOS Movies' DSLR on the way too: 4K video, 35mm full frame sensor</a></div> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-makes-an-appearance-in-vincent-laforets-mobius-find/">Canon C300 makes an appearance in Vincent Laforet's Mobius, find the short and behind the scenes right here (video)</a></div> <div class="ftip_links"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-c300-cinema-camera-hands-on-video/">Canon C300 cinema camera hands-on (video)</a></div></div>Fujio Mitarai is saying that the camera is especially well-suited to accurate color reproduction, particularly skin tones. We're also receiving word that the C300 will cost somewhere in the range of $20,000 -- how's that for affordable? It contains a Super 35mm CMOS sensor and delivers up to 4K resolution with the outfit's new "top-end" EF zoom lenses, which come in four flavors: two 14.5-60mm lenses and two 30-300mm. And the lenses keep on coming, with three EF prime lenses in 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm variations. That CMOS sensor offers 1920 x 1080 pixels for the reds and blues and 1920 x 2160 for greens. Like we said before, list price for the C300 will be $20,000 when it hits stores in late January 2012. And that appears to be it for this <em>very</em> long announcement, but we'll have our first impressions soon. Full PR awaits you after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-keynote/">Canon C300 keynote</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-keynote/#4582596"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/c300gallerykeynote01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-keynote/#4582597"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/c300gallerykeynote02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-keynote/#4582598"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/c300gallerykeynote03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-keynote/#4582599"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/c300gallerykeynote04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-keynote/#4582600"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/c300gallerykeynote05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-press-pics/">Canon C300</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-press-pics/#4583063"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300presspic-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-press-pics/#4583066"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300presspic-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-press-pics/#4583068"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300presspic-07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-press-pics/#4583067"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300presspic-06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-c300-press-pics/#4583064"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/11/canonc300presspic-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em>Christopher Trout contributed to this post</em><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-launches-c300-cinema-camera-prepares-to-take-on-red-scarl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Canon launches C300 cinema camera, prepares to take on Red Scarlet and Arri Alexa</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/canon-launches-c300-cinema-camera-prepares-to-take-on-red-scarl/">Canon launches C300 cinema camera, prepares to take on Red Scarlet and Arri Alexa</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 18:13:00 EST. Canon has been incredibly tight-lipped about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/canon-plans-hollywood-event-ready-to-roll-out-the-red-carpet-on/">its upcoming announcement</a>, with only a few vague details leaking out since the event was announced in September. What we do know is that the imaging company plans to unveil a product that represents a "commitment to play a larger role in the film and television community," and that Martin Scorsese will be on hand -- and we assume he's not there to announce that <em>Sinatra</em> will be shot exclusively with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/5DMarkII/">5D Mark II</a>. Curiously, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Red/">Red</a> has scheduled an event for tomorrow evening as well, just a few blocks away from the Canon venue. We'll be coming to you live from Hollywood tomorrow evening, and if the hype is any indication, legacy cinema camera manufacturers have but a few hours left of industry domination. The curtain comes up at 3PM local time, and we've included a handy list of round-the-world start times below. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/10/red-epic-shoots-birds-at-96fps-no-dog-needed-to-retrieve-them">Red Epic</a> + <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/aerial+photography/">Flying drone</a> = The sort of geek math you can't help but wish you'd come up with yourself. German VFX company OMStudios decided to mount Red's super-camera into a custom Octocopter to record footage in resolutions up to 5K. As cool as the setup is, there's a practical purpose: not only is it far cheaper than renting a crane, it can also climb up to 150 meters -- making it just high enough to fly over Hollywood's tallest man, Tom Cruise. Since it's highly unlikely we'll ever get to play with one of these, we'll just have to point you to the video after the break and hope that no catastrophic power failures take place halfway through any real-world shoots.<br />

Nikon may be generous with the paint colors for its more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nikon,coolpix">compact</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/21/nikon-unveils-v1-and-j1-mirrorless-cameras-10-1mp-cmos-2-7-inc/">cameras</a>, but it's been a decidedly different story for its DSLRs (unlike some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pentax,dslr">other camera makers</a>). There is one new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/11/nikon-d90-torn-down-rebuilt-in-pink-video/">non-DIY option </a>available courtesy of Best Buy, however, which is now offering an exclusive red version of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d3100">Nikon D3100</a>. Unfortunately, while it has the same $650 list price as the regular D3100 (including an 18-55mm VR kit lens), it doesn't have the same $100 discount that Best Buy's currently offering on the standard black model.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/30/red-nikon-d3100-now-available-exclusively-at-best-buy/">Red Nikon D3100 now available exclusively at Best Buy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 13:41:00 EST. But, what about the other side of that equation? All of that <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/4k">4K</a> footage is worthless without something to watch it on. CEO Jim Jannard, notorious for his ability to build hype and mystery, took to the REDUser Forums to tease some details about an upcoming 4K, 3D laser projection system that will be targeted at both homes (presumably well off ones) and theaters. Details about the projector are still scarce, but we do know it won't be using <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/20/ti-sticks-to-its-dlp-guns-fires-off-4k-pro-gear/">TI's 4K DLP chip</a>, and that it will rely on passive 3D tech rather than active, which Jannard said "landed in the La Brea Tar Pits." The image is apparently so bright and clear that it left Stephen Pizzo, co-founder Element Technica, "speechless." We just have one question: when can we expect our review unit?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/22/red-ceo-teases-4k-3d-laser-projector-bound-for-theaters-and-mi/">RED CEO teases 4K 3D laser projector, bound for theaters and (millionaires') homes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 11:12:00 EST. Now, Logan has refined his system to the point where it can produce hydrogen from wastewater or biodegradable organic materials without using a drop of grid electricity, and without emitting even a hint of carbon dioxide. His approach, outlined in the September 19th issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, involves something known as reverse-electrodialysis (RED) -- a process that harvests energy from the ionic discrepancy between fresh and salt water. Logan's bacterial hydrolysis cell (pictured left) features a so-called RED stack that's comprised of alternating positive and negative ion exchange membranes, which it uses to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. Normally, this process would involve about 25 pairs of membranes, but by using RED technology in conjunction with electricity-producing exoelectrogenic bacteria, Penn State's team was able to extract hydrogen with just five membrane pairs. All told, Logan's cells proved to be about 58 to 64 percent energy efficient, while producing between 0.8 to 1.6 cubic meters of hydrogen for every cubic meter of liquid that passed through the system. The researchers' results show that only one percent of that energy was used to pump water through the cells, which are completely carbon neutral, as well. According to Logan, this breakthrough demonstrates that "pure hydrogen gas can efficiently be produced from virtually limitless supplies of seawater and river water and biodegradable organic matter." Somewhere, the US Navy is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/07/navy-tests-bacteria-powered-hydrogen-fuel-cell-could-start-moni/">taking scrupulous notes</a>. Full PR after the break.<br />

Well, it looks like Canon won't be the only company making a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/canon-plans-hollywood-event-ready-to-roll-out-the-red-carpet-on/">big camera announcement</a> on November 3rd. RED CEO Jim Jannard has now confirmed that it will also be officially announcing its "new" <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,scarlet">RED Scarlet</a> camera on the very same day (no coincidence, it seems), at which point it will detail "all the changes" the company has made to it. Unfortunately, that's about all the company is saying right now, although Jannard promises that "when we announce the changes, we will be ready to ship."<br />

Alright, so in-flight entertainment systems aren't exactly the sort of thing that people <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/17/first-iphone-4-camper-spotted-one-week-early/">camp out </a>for days to get first crack at. But, for those who spend a lot of time defying the laws of gravity, an upgraded seat-back system could be the difference between a pleasant trip and urinating on the cabin floor in disgust. In late 2012 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/virginamerica">Virgin America</a> will start rolling out a new system, developed with help from Lufthansa, called BoardConnect. We don't have all the details about the next generation of Red at the moment, but we can tell you it will include an HD monitor in every headrest, improved WiFi connectivity, and the ability to interact with your personal electronics (though, how and to what end is still somewhat unclear). Each seat will have a QWERTY-equipped remote for navigation and playing games, as well as chatting with other passengers via in-flight IM. In addition to live TV, music, games, flight tracking and on-demand movies, passengers can also order in-flight meals and peruse what we presume will be an electronic version of SkyMall -- for the shopaholics on board. Check out the PR after the break for a few more details.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/13/virgin-america-and-lufthansa-systems-unveil-new-in-flight-entert/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virgin America and Lufthansa Systems unveil new in-flight entertainment system coming in 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/13/virgin-america-and-lufthansa-systems-unveil-new-in-flight-entert/">Virgin America and Lufthansa Systems unveil new in-flight entertainment system coming in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST. Acer's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/08/acer-liquid-mini-and-betouch-e210-hands-on/">Liquid Mini</a> won't be breaking speed records anytime soon, but at least it can <em>look</em> like a red hot racer, now that it's received the Ferrari treatment. Following in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/01/acer-liquid-e-ferrari-special-edition-revs-up-android-2-1/">Liquid E</a>'s skid marks, this Liquid Mini Ferrari Edition features a vibrant red exterior emblazoned with the automaker's iconic shield, and ships preloaded with engine ringtones, racing-themed wallpaper and other apps. Under the hood, however, lies the same, Gingerbread-based handset, replete with 512MB of RAM, a 3.2-inch display, five megapixel camera and rather underwhelming 600MHz processor. No word yet on when the device will be hitting the raceway, but you can get a closer look at the source link, below.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/06/acers-liquid-mini-gets-ferrari-fied-doesnt-get-any-faster/">Acer's Liquid Mini gets Ferrari-fied, doesn't get any faster</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 11:40:00 EST. It's been almost two years since we first got a peek at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/red-dsmc-specs-detailed-prices-start-at-28-000-for-epix-x-low/">specs on RED's EPIC-X</a>, and the 5K-shooting, roughly $30,000 rig is just now shipping out to customers. That's not terribly shocking considering the company's notoriously long development cycles and, if you ordered one, you should be too excited about getting a new toy to worry about how long it took to build. Lets just hope the first batch of folks to start capturing gorgeous footage with this thing have a little more luck than <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/31/the-worlds-first-shipped-red-epic-gets-stolen-in-home-break-in/">Mark Pederson</a> -- RED can't be handing out $100,000 bounties every time it releases a new product.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/04/red-epic-x-starts-shipping-to-lucky-shooters-with-deep-pockets/">RED EPIC-X starts shipping to lucky shooters with deep pockets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 00:34:00 EST. Better dust off your finest pair of shades, because this Flame Red <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/3ds/">Nintendo 3DS</a> is on its way to the States. The console, which launched earlier this summer in Japan as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/nintendo-bringing-red-flare-3ds-new-wii-package-to-japan-this/">Red Flare</a>, will hit stores next month (alongside the new Star Fox 64 3D game), joining a 3DS lineup that already features Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue. The company will also be releasing two new games this winter -- Super Mario 3D Land in November and Mario Kart 7 in December -- in the hopes of rectifying its disappointing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/28/nintendo-3ds-price-drops-from-249-to-169-august-12th-current/">Q2 earnings report</a> with a strong holiday campaign. Only time will tell whether or not it has any effect on Nintendo's bottom line, but if you're interested in adding a touch of Santa-like cheer to your yuletide gaming season, you can grab a Flame Red console on September 9th, for $170. Find more information in the full PR, after the break.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/nintendo-to-release-flame-red-3ds-console-next-month-sunglasses/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo to release Flame Red 3DS console next month, sunglasses not included</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/nintendo-to-release-flame-red-3ds-console-next-month-sunglasses/">Nintendo to release Flame Red 3DS console next month, sunglasses not included</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 09:21:00 EST. We've seen some mind-blowing footage from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/14/red-shows-off-5k-epic-camera/">RED's EPIC</a>, as one might expect from a $39,500 camera with a 5K sensor and up to 120 fps video capture (at 4K). But video shooter and all-around photo wiz Vincent Laforet got to take an exclusive early look at the company's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> EOS mount, which pairs the EPIC-M with Canon's enormous collection of top-quality glass, including the 600mm f/4 L lens Laforet used for his shoot at Mono Lake in California. That lens, used with a 2x Canon teleconverter and the RED's multiplication factor, yields a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 3400mm, which as you'll see in the video below, enabled some pretty incredible <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/10/red-epic-shoots-birds-at-96fps-no-dog-needed-to-retrieve-them/">video captures</a>. RED has yet to officially announce availability for the Canon EOS mount, but has shared that it will cost $2,000 (pennies compared to the EPIC's $58,000 kit price), and will be constructed of titanium -- tasked with the critical responsibility of reducing movement during those extended-lens shoots. Jump past the break for Laforet's sample video, or check out his blog post at the source link for the full rundown.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/">RED EPIC-M Canon EOS Mount</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347607"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-273_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347608"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-287_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347609"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-291_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347610"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-292_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/red-epic-m-canon-eos-mount/#4347613"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-05-epicpackage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/05/red-epic-scores-a-canon-eos-mount-vincent-laforet-gets-some-awe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RED EPIC scores a Canon EOS mount, Laforet gets some extraordinary footage (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/05/red-epic-scores-a-canon-eos-mount-vincent-laforet-gets-some-awe/">RED EPIC scores a Canon EOS mount, Laforet gets some extraordinary footage (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 15:43:00 EST. Go ahead and admit it: ever since Sony Ericsson debuted the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/sony-ericsson-neo-first-hands-on/">Xperia Neo</a>, you've been concocting wild situations for exploiting the low-light imaging prowess of that 8.1 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/exmor+r/">Exmor R sensor</a>. Now thanks to Vodafone UK, you can actualize that vision for free with all monthly plans starting at &pound;26 -- and score a ravishing red exterior to boot. With <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/08/sony-ericsson-xperia-neo-delayed-to-q3-arc-and-play-facing-limi/">production back in swing</a> for this Gingerbread-wielding handset, the only question that remains is whether you'll be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/sony-ericsson-will-let-you-unlock-bootloader-on-new-xperia-andro/">cracking that bootloader wide open</a> following the unboxing, or if you'll be waiting a few weeks before abusing the Neo's inner delights.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/11/xperia-neo-now-shipping-from-vodafone-uk-in-stunning-red-apparel/">Xperia Neo now shipping from Vodafone UK in stunning red apparel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 09:30:00 EST. During our call to discuss <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/apple-final-cut-pro-x-now-available-on-mac-app-store/">Final Cut Pro X</a> earlier this week, an Apple product manager boasted about the product's low price, media management, and ground-up redesign. Unfortunately, when starting from scratch, developers seem to have overlooked a few features that professional users have come to depend on, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/24/conans-editors-really-love-final-cut-pro-x-or-maybe-they-don/">prompting widespread backlash</a> -- both on internet forums and even on Apple's own App Store, where the $300 download-only app currently has a rating of just 2.5 stars (out of five), including nearly 500 one-star ratings. (Note: you must purchase the app before submitting a rating or review.) <em>The New York Times</em> spoke to product managers about these issues, which include an inability to import old FCP files, no multicamera editing, no support for RED cameras, and no ability to specify QuickTime export settings, among many others. Apple says there are (pricey) workarounds available, or fixes on the way for all but the first issue, but head over to the source link for the full rundown at <em>NYT</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/25/apple-product-managers-respond-to-final-cut-pro-x-criticism/">Apple product managers respond to Final Cut Pro X criticism</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 25 Jun 2011 14:48:00 EST. The bad news is that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/working-red-scarlet-appears-at-our-trailer-we-go-hands-on-vid/">RED Scarlet</a> is a still a prototype two and a half years after it was announced. The good news is that the folks at RED have shot some stunning test footage with the 8x fixed lens version to show off the Scarlet's prowess at 120 frames per second. Remember, every one of those frames is a 3072 x 1620 RAW masterpiece -- and while the video after the break obviously can't deliver that resolution, it can nevertheless give you a feel for the slow-mo power of this thing. Prepare yourselves.<br />

We'd already had <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/17/atandt-bringing-red-htc-inspire-4g-to-radio-shack-purple-evo-shif/">some indication</a> that AT&amp;T would soon let Radio Shack offer an exclusive red version of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/inspire4g">HTC Inspire 4G</a>, and that's now been made official (and available). As you can see above, you can snag the phone for $29.99 on a two-year AT&amp;T contract (or $550 off-contract), which will buy you a 4.3-inch WVGA display, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8 megapixel camera with an LED flash, and Android 2.2 with Sense -- there's still no word on a Gingerbread upgrade for this one. Of course, Radio Shack will also sell you a black one for the same price, but we're pretty sure the red one's faster.<br />

Oh, the Desire S. It's attracted plenty of attention around these parts, and if a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/10/htc-desire-s-review/">thorough review</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/htc-sensation-versus-incredible-s-and-desire-s-a-family-scuff/">family scuffle</a> wasn't enough to draw your attention, we imagine this fire engine paint job will do just nicely. Vodafone is bringing this exclusive red-headed beaut to its UK network, where it's available free with all monthly plans &pound;30 or more. So, if you're the type who loves aluminum unibody enclosures but detests the color of... well, aluminum... it seems that you're in luck. Just don't get too cocky around <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/04/macbook-pro-review-early-2011/">MacBook Pro</a> fans -- they're likely to get jealous of your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/colorware">free paint job</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/htc-desire-s-gets-a-candy-apple-makeover-exclusively-at-vodafone/">HTC Desire S gets a candy apple makeover exclusively at Vodafone UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 19:37:00 EST. Why, yes, that <em>is</em> a red <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/htc-inspire-4g-for-atandt-hands-on/">HTC Inspire 4G</a> you're looking at. A friendly tipster provided us with these dummy unit images, adding that AT&amp;T is planning to launch the jazzy model at Radio Shack. No word yet on when that'll actually happen, nor do we know how much they'll cost when it does. Our same source claims that a purple <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/evoshift4g">Evo Shift</a> is also making its way to the Shack, so you know where to go to get your flashy phone fix this summer.<br />
