  • Apple streams entire Red Hot Chili Peppers album in iTunes

The iTunes Music Store has achieved another first (for the iTunes Music Store): streaming a full album to listeners. Beginning yesterday, users can stream Red Hot Chili Peppers' new album I'm With You in its entirety for free. The album doesn't go on sale until August 30th, but one song is available for sale now and users can also pre-order the entire album. It's cool that Apple (and the Red Hot Chili Peppers) are allowing users to stream the album in full, but as I write this I can see why Apple might not think iTunes music streaming is ready for prime time. I'm getting a ton of buffering errors. That of course could be due to everyone trying to stream the only album you can from iTunes. Also the stream is one long stream of the entire album -- you can't skips around to individual songs, which is kind of limiting. But then again, it is free music. No word on how long the stream will be up, but it's reasonable to assume that it will be taken down once the album goes on sale on August 30th.

  • Rumorong: Rock Band goes under a bridge with Red Hot Chili Peppers DLC Feb. 18

Update: Harmonix has deemed this a hoax, nothing to see here. Website GCN apparently captured a photo of an ad on the Xbox 360 dashboard promoting a Red Hot Chili Peppers DLC pack for Rock Band coming Feb. 18. The site also allegedly received an "announcement letter" with the following info.Red Hot Chili Peppers Pack (440 MS points/ $5.50) Under the Bridge (160 MS points/ $2) Universally Speaking (160 MS points/ $2) Otherside (160 MS Points / $2) It seems the new sport for the internets is to break Rock Band DLC release info as soon as possible. We've been unable to produce the ad on our consoles, but if any readers are able to get it on theirs, please feel free to share with us a nice quality photo.[Thanks to XanthouS]

  • Win Guitar Hero II, 'graphed by Dave Navarro

So, maybe the hardcore Guitar Hero thrashers that queued up at the LA Best Buy Monday night didn't care if it was Dave Navarro or Trogdor pimping the sequel to the hit rockstar simulator (groupies and crippling drug addiction not included). But that didn't stop us from getting him to autograph a guitar (and box), along with some Guitar Hero II posters.Of course, we're going to give everything away to a handful of lucky readers. The rules are simple Record a video of yourself playing Guitar Hero 1 (pizza suit optional) Upload that video to Netscape with the tag "GH2contest" Double check to make sure you tagged it right ... otherwise, no prize for you! Vote on your favorite entries, conveniently compiled at Netscape.com/tag/gh2contest We'll give the autographed guitar and game to the entry with the most votes, while the two runners-up will each get a t-shirt and autographed poster So, those are the entry rules ... but what about the fine print? Pretty simple: the contest will be open for three weeks, so you've got some time to get something together; you need to be a US resident (or at least know someone in the US who can receive your prize for you); and you need to own the video content you upload, you can't just submit something you found on the net.

  • iTunes Chili Peppers promo angers some fans

Ok, everyone just settle down. A couple of weeks ago, the iTunes Music Store offered a deal to fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Pre-order the new album [iTunes link], and receive a special code that would grant you access to a special Ticketmaster pre-sale for the upcoming tour. The codes were scheduled to be distributed yesterday, May 9 (tickets go on sale to the general public on the 13th), but so far many customers haven't heard a peep from Apple. Call me an optimist, but I'm sure everything will be OK. I know it stinks on ice when it seems you aren't getting what you've been promised, but you've still got three days before John Q. Public can get his mitts on your tickets. Patience, grasshopper.Of course, if the 13th comes and goes and leaves you ticket-less, then all bets are off. Thanks, Adam.

It's great to see that when the Peppers (finally) decide to commit to something, they really dive in: iLounge is reporting that on May 2nd at 6:30 pm local time, Apple Stores in the U.S., Canada and UK will hold listening parties for the band's new album, Stadium Arcadium, set to land on May 9th. The stores will play all 28 songs from the new album and will be giving away a limited number of iTunes cards so fans can download the new single, "Dani California" (iTMS link). Let's also not forget that pre-ordering the new album enters you into a contest for a logo-engraved, 60 GB Chili Peppers iPod, and gives you access to a Ticketmaster pre-sale for the band's North American tour.

You may remember the Red Hot Chili Peppers as being among those who were quite opposed to the sale of downloadable music. A couple of weeks ago, I was surprised to see some of their music in the iTunes Music Store. This week, the surprises continue: Not only has some exclusive Peppers music been added, but there's an exclusive Ticketmaster pre-sale going on, an album pre-order, an exclusive video and booklet and a contest giving away the band's entire catalog plus a limited edition Chili Peppers iPod [iTunes link]. Whew. If you're a Chili Peppers fan, check this one out.

Do you remember when Napster was huge (about ten years ago), and digital file sharing was on everyone's minds? Metallica and The Red Hot Chili Peppers were sort of leading the anti-p2p charge. Several years later, when the iTunes Music Store demonstrated that the online distribution of music could be accomplished successfully, the Peppers refused to participate, stating that (among other things), they didn't like that customers were able to purchase individual tracks, as it interrupted the flow of the album, or some other artsy thing like that.Anyway, this is why I was very surprised to find nine Peppers albums in the iTMS this morning [iTunes link], including some exclusive stuff and videos. I'm glad you guys have come around.
