We called Resogun "a smart, merciless little shooter" in our four-star review, but did you know that it's also a smart, merciless little shooter that can be enjoyed in online co-op mode? Yes, with another ship at your side, the fun can be doubled. You can get a taste for co-op thanks to the trailer above, and if you're a PS4 owner already, you have a couple other options. Since the game is free for PlayStation Plus members - which everyone can try out thanks to a 30-day trial voucher - there's no reason not to check it out. And if you're worried about not having anyone to play with, don't be: One million PS4 units were sold during the system's first 24 hours on the shelves, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a co-pilot.

  • Sony president undaunted by 'mixed' PS4 reviews

The past few days have delivered a flood of PlayStation 4 launch game reviews, many of which have been less than flattering. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida remains unfazed. "Yeah, it's disappointing to see some of the low scores," Yoshida admitted in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. "I haven't spent enough time reading reviews, but I would characterize them as mixed," he added optimistically. In an attempt to partially explain away the lower-than-expected review scores, Yoshida cites an overworked games media. "[W]ith this launch there are lots of games coming out, so the media must be very busy going through the games quickly, and especially since the online functionality wasn't ready until in the last couple days. So we have to look at how much time they spend on what aspect of the games and how that may be contributing to some of the lower scores." "It's disappointing but I don't think it's worrisome for the launch of the system," he added. Finally, Yoshida offers a personal defense of his company's offerings. "I've played through all of our games, Killzone, Knack and Resogun, and I totally enjoyed playing through these games. I'm now on my second run of Knack and Resogun at a higher difficulty - these games really grow on you when you play more," Yoshida said. "I'm very confident that once you purchase these games and play, you'll be happy that you've done so."

  • Resogun review: Save the last humans, hopefully

We're rolling out PlayStation 4 review coverage all the way through the launch on Nov. 15. Check out more coverage here! The blocky green humans of Resogun, who look like they've been peeled off a men's room door, sometimes forget to thank you for a rescue well done. The thought may cross their little starstruck minds as they cartwheel through the air, catapulted from your spaceship into a column of safe light, but their ability to utter it is lost in a whirlwhind of multicolored missile trails, alien spaceships and arcs of vibrant electricity. Perhaps they are simply speechless, as time slows and their view rotates through a kaleidoscope of pristine destruction en route to – "Human lost." Oh, whoops, guess I threw that one into a lake. The rescue capsule was over there, wasn't it?

This week's PS Plus goodies, a mixture of freebies for subscribers on both PS3 and PS4, have been posted. Ibb & Obb, a gravity-based co-op puzzle game, will be offered on the PS3 side, while PS Plus members who grab a PS4 at launch on Friday can download both Resogun and Contrast gratis. Resogun is Housemarque's voxel-based shmup where players, navigating a closed 2D plane, attempt to save citizens from the clutches of evil invading aliens. Contrast, from Compulsion Games, centers around two main characters: an older girl named Dawn that players control and Didi, a younger girl who has just lost her mother. In addition to the free games, PS Plus members can also indulge in a special starter pack for free-to-play shooter Warframe. The pack includes both premium and free currency, a weapon mod pack and three-day boosts for both experience and credits. Finally, tomorrow will yield its annual slew of discounts for PS Plus and base PSN users alike. Beyond Good & Evil HD, Divekick, Street Fighter X Tekken and Outland are just a few of the games up for sale. You can peruse the full list over on the PlayStation Blog.

Our fearless leader Ludwig Kietzmann managed to corner Resogun developer Housemarque's Mikael Havari, head of self-publishing, to discuss a wide range of topics regarding the PS4 launch game. Resogun, as a free PS4 game for PSN users, is likely something early next-gen adopters will want to give a whirl. Resogun, if you're unaware, is a voxel-based shmup where players move on a closed-loop 2D plane and attempt to save helpless citizens from being murdered or abducted by alien invaders. And if you don't know what a voxel is, you're in luck – all is explained in our video preview above. Enjoy!

Sony unveiled next month's PlayStation Plus lineup, announcing that subscribers will receive a slate of free games for the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PlayStation 4 in time for International Turkey Day. Sony's subscription service hosts its first batch of PlayStation 4 freebies in November, as early adopters will receive free downloadable copies of Compulsion Games' shadowy puzzle-platformer Contrast and Housemarque's Defender-like shoot-'em-up Resogun. Contrast serves as a last-minute replacement for Driveclub, which was originally scheduled to take part in next month's PlayStation Plus lineup before its recent delay. Capcom's Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen and Sega's Binary Domain headline November's PlayStation 3 offerings, joining Sparpweed's co-op action game Ibb and Obb. PlayStation Vita owners can expect to see Sony's Monster Hunter-inspired action-RPG Soul Sacrifice, along with an upgraded HD version of Just Add Water's Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. PlayStation Plus members in Europe receive Konami's Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in next month's package, along with Remember Me, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD, and MotorStorm RC.
