  • Reminder: Log in to your alts after launch for rested XP

The prospect of having multiple garrisons has made me eager to level up alts earlier than I would have in previous expansions. That means I'll want my alts earning rested XP as soon as possible. Rested XP isn't something that happens automatically when Blizzard flips the Warlords of Draenor switch tonight. As with previous expansions, your characters will not start accruing rested XP until you log in with them post-launch. It can be an easy thing to forget when you're focused on getting your main to level 100, but it's definitely worth taking a moment to cycle through all of your alts. Just make sure they're parked in a city or inn. Don't go on vacation for a week and leave your character parked in the middle of Desolace like the author of this post.

  • Pro Tip: Start earning rested XP ASAP

If you, like me, have a whole lot of warriors (or some other classes, if you're into that kind of thing) that you'll be needing to get to 90 at some point, remember that any current alts you may have will need to be logged on and moved to an inn or capital city in order to start gaining rested status. They won't start getting rested until you log them on since Mists of Pandaria, like all expansions, resets rested XP. However, you can stockpile up to 25 quests (the maximum your quest log holds) and turn them all in as soon as the level cap is raised. These can be daily quests. If they keep to the same format as they did when Cataclysm launched, the value of Cataclysm quests to a leveling character will be reduced, but it can provide a bit of a boost. It's worth keeping in mind. It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. Look for expansion basics in our Mists FAQ, or dig into our spring press event coverage for more details!

  • The Daily Grind: Do you like bonus experience systems?

"Rested experience" in MMOs seems like it ought to be a casual player's best friend, right? If you log out for long enough, the game will double your experience gain rate the next time you play... up to a certain point, of course, and only if you log out in the right spot (or only if you're a subscriber). But after a while, you get so inured to bonus experience that playing without any of it banked starts to feel like playing at a huge disadvantage. Double exp becomes the new normal, and old normal feels slow. I can't stand feeling like I'm taking the sucker's bet to play now at half the speed rather than wait. And that always makes me create and turn to a stable of alts to maximize my rested exp, which means I'm metagaming and playing characters I don't really want to be playing. Never mind the annoyance of always having to find a tavern or cantina to log out in, which is a breeze in some games and rather a pain in others! So what about you? Do you like bonus experience systems? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

With Rise of Isengard creeping up on us, I've seen an increasing number of people begin to freak out about it, not because they're upset it's coming but because they're not prepared to partake in the expansion on day one. Now, this might not be important to you, but I assure you it's quite important to many -- lots of people like to be in on the excitement from the very beginning, and it's a special kind of torture to contemplate having to sit there and listen to your friends oohing and ahhing over the new zones and content while you're still poking your way through Moria. So because of this, some players really, really want to get a character up to level 65, prepared to do a dive roll right into Dunland when September 27th hits. It's understandable. Even I, a normally laid-back type of guy, am pushing hard to finish up Enedwaith with my Lore-master so that I'll have one character good to go on I-Day (that's Isengard Day). But what about those who don't have a level 65 in their pockets? Is it too late to get your act in gear and get up there before it's too late? Of course it isn't. I'm pretty convinced that you could even roll a fresh toon today and get him or her up to the endgame by I-Day, depending on how much time you can dedicate to it. Today we're going to look at a few leveling tips I've picked up over the years to aid those of you who want to kick in the afterburners of the leveling process so that you can make sure you're where you want to be. It's not even that hard!

  • No rested XP for level 80 characters at Cataclysm launch

If you're hoping to somehow get your level 80 character a rested XP boost come Cataclysm, the only way would be to log him or her out at an inn and not play him for a while once launch day comes, because rested XP is being reset with the launch of the new expansion. To quote Valnoth: Valnoth - Re: On rested exp issue again. Rested experience will be reset at launch. You will start at 0 rested. source You can stop trying to come up with weird scenarios in which you will get a huge rested XP boost before Cataclysm ships. It's not going to happen. If you want rested XP, you're just going to have to rest for it. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it; nothing will be the same! In WoW Insider's Guide to Cataclysm, you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion (available Dec. 7, 2010), from brand new races to revamped quests and zones. • More ideas for player housing

Spicytuna has a nice little writeup about a much-discussed but never implemented feature in World of Warcraft: player housing. Blizzard has borrowed (and subsequently improved upon) many of the most common features in MMOs -- they revamped leveling with ideas like rested XP and recruit-a-friend, they changed the endgame with the ideas of Heroic instances and daily quests, and they've tweaked PvP with battlegrounds, Wintergrasp and Arenas. But for some reason they've never taken on the idea of player housing: a place in the game for players to make their own. The reason we've always heard is that they never landed on a good implementation of it -- if they couldn't do it right, they wouldn't do it at all.But Spicytuna proves there's no shortage of ideas. The main thought so far is that such an area would be instanced, as having actual buildings in the game as player houses just leads to emptied out ghettos of buildings left to rot.

  • Hey! Where's my rested XP?

If you have a level 60 character, you may have noticed (if you run one of the many mods that continues displaying experience information after you hit level 60) that some time in the past week your rested experience -- probably maxxed out, after weeks of idling in your capitol city of choice -- has vanished. Just on the horizon of being able to put this rested XP to use, I'd been keeping an eye on this and hoping it was a bug of some sort. But now it looks like this may be "working as intended," with posters in this thread reporting that GMs say this is working properly. There's not much in the way of constructive commentary in the thread, but here's to hoping for some kind of blue response that gives us a bit of insight on why they made this change -- which only hurts 60s who have been waiting for the expansion release.
