When I was a child, I fought with my brothers. A lot. It was part of being the youngest, and part of being a family. Most of our sibling rivalry died with our youth, but one single, never-ending quarrel outlived our childhood: the Nintendo Entertainment System. My oldest brother and I have been bickering over our original NES for decades. Who really owns it? Me, the guy who scoured garage sales to build our collection of classic games, or him, the firstborn who -- by sibling law -- is right by default? To this day, we still argue about whose house our childhood console should live in. Today, that war finally ends. I don't need our old Nintendo anymore. I have the RetroUSB AVS.

Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril, the new NES platformer (!) by Sivak Games, was officially released on an honest-to-goodness NES cartridge yesterday. The game, inspired by super-hard games like I Wanna Be the Guy, contains over 550 rooms and 8 bosses, and comes on a translucent green cartridge that is designed to work in any region's NES. Unfortunately, only a day after its release, the game is "temporarily unavailable" on the RetroUSB site. It's not only difficult, it's now difficult to find! We're contacting RetroUSB to find out if a second printing is planned. Update: RetroZone tells us that the item will be available again tonight around 7PM EST, but "supplies may be limited." If you want this, keep an eye on the site! [Thanks, Levi!]

You may know this from reading the operations guide or from trying it, but in case you don't, Mega Man 9 does not recognize GameCube controllers -- despite previous information leading us to believe that it would. We had yet to try it, satisfied with the Wiimote and the Classic, until alerted by tipster "fatcatfan." We switched on the Wavebird, kept close by due to frequent Chibi-Robo, and ... didn't play Mega Man 9. Confirmed. This is especially bad news for people who ordered RetroPorts specifically for Mega Man, or who expected to use the Hori GameCube pad. Please don't let it stop you from buying Mega Man 9.%Gallery-30253%

  • RetroZone intros NES, SNES controller adapters

You know, most of us here at Engadget couldn't help but get a bit misty eyed when we saw that new Wii Classic Controller and recalled our fond memories of many a' night spent with the SNES' Ol' Roundy. Of course, there's always that original rectangular classic NES controller that we saved the Princess with in "Super Mario Bros.", which will always have a fond place in our hearts. Whichever you prefer (or perhaps both), RetroUSB has just released SNES and NES controller adapters for the Nintendo Wii, letting your relive your mid-1980s and early 1990s memories of button-pushing in the 21st century; when you download the original Super Mario Bros. or the very first StarFox via Nintendo's Virtual Console service, you can now play them as they were meant to be played. These controller adapters will make the perfect addition for our F-Zero party this weekend -- Captain Falcon FTW!
