  • Papers, Please and The Last of Us honored at GDC awards show

Designer Lucas Pope came close to apologizing for his frequent appearance on stage at 2014's Indie Games Festival Awards, collecting award after award for Papers, Please. The dystopian game of bureaucracy and hard-earned immigration was recognized by a panel of industry peers for its considered narrative, game design, and ... downloadability? Pope couldn't help but poke fun at the vestigial "Best Downloadable Game" category, noting the distinct advantage of making a game that's a quick 40MB download. Papers, Please also won for innovation in the Game Developers Choice Awards, the more mainstream half of the evening's show. Naughty Dog's own take on dystopia, The Last of Us, won here for best design, best narrative, and best overall game of the year. (This despite fellow nominee Super Mario 3D World having some pretty sweet overalls.) For the rest of the winners, including some gongs for Device 6, Risk of Rain and Grand Theft Auto 5, please see below.

Steam's Midweek Madness sale is offering up a tempting smorgasbord of deals across a variety of Capcom DLC. Supplemental content for DmC: Devil May Cry, Lost Planet 3, Super Street Fighter 4 and more are available for up to 75% off. You can also grab DLC for Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil 6, though we wouldn't suggest dropping any money on the latter. Punishing roguelike Risk of Rain is also on sale for 40% off, which brings Richard's Four in February game down to $6. A four-pack for Risk of Rain is also on sale for $18, down from the usual asking price of $30. These deals will only be available for the next two days, so interested parties should act soon. Uninterested parties may resume their usual vacant staring. [Image: Capcom]

Hopoo Games' punishing but satisfying action-platformer Risk of Rain is migrating over to the PlayStation Vita, publisher Chucklefish announced today. The news was first revealed on Twitter by Chucklefish's Ashton Raze, the lead writer of Starbound, and confirmed by Sony Senior Business Development Manager Shahid Ahmad. No timetable for the port has been shared. Risk of Rain follows the lone survivor of a train crash on a mysterious alien planet inhabited by a slew of hostile monsters. The goal is to survive as long as possible, but with each passing moment Risk of Rain ramps up the difficulty. In our review, we lauded Risk of Rain for its "hard-won thrill" and said that if you can "accept that challenge, if you can pick yourself up and start all over again whenever you fail, you will lose hours to Risk of Rain. Whether you mean to or not." [Image: Hopoo Games]

  • Joystiq's Four in February is upon us, behold our staff picks

February is a forbidding land, full of winter darkness and noisome Valentine's Day traditions that are only slightly balanced out by a steady trickle of new games. That's why Joystiq's very own Mike Suszek created Four in February, a gaming event to unify the world against the month's doldrums. Here's how it works: Pick four games to finish in February and then try to finish them. That's it. No crazy rules, no limits on what you play. Just choose four games and take them on with gusto. That's the 4iF way. The best part of 4iF is how we all get to share the struggle, though. We want you to go to the 4iF Facebook community page and tell us everything. Show us pics of what games you're playing, tell us why you're playing them, let us know when you're streaming them, and most importantly, proclaim your victories or failures. Meanwhile, over on Joystiq's Facebook page, we'll be running 4iF giveaways every four days throughout the month starting Tuesday, Feb. 4. On Twitter, we'll be tracking the action to those who shout @joystiq using the hashtag #4iF. This is war on our gaming libraries, and this is our solid battle plan. What's the staff playing? Read on.

This year's top picks feature Hopoo Games' run-and-gun roguelike platformer Risk of Rain, Albert Shih's forced-perspective puzzler Museum of Simulation Technology, and Hafiz Azman and Winston Lee's single-switch rhythm game Rhythm Doctor. Other winning games include Mahdi Bahrami and Moslem Rasouli's Engare, Philipp Beau and Daniel Goffin's Symmetrain, Ostrich Banditos' Westerado, Unblanched Peanuts' Foiled, and Hack n' Hide's Cyber Heist. Five additional games received honorable mentions. This year's IGF saw a record-breaking number of entries, including 346 projects developed by students. The IGF's Main Competition finalists were announced earlier this month, nominating indie standouts like The Stanley Parable, Device 6, and Papers, Please.

Welcome, Joystiqers, to the inaugural entry in Joystiq Tiny Streams, a new series of small streams featuring the Joystiq crew playing their current favorites. They play the game for the duration of our usual Joystiq Streams–which air from 4p.m. EST to 5p.m. EST every Tuesday and Thursday–and then our crack team of editors fashion it into a tinier highlight reel to tell you about the game with speed, efficiency, and humor. This first Joystiq Tiny Stream is of the recently released Risk of Rain, which our own Richard Mitchell liked a whole lot. As much as he liked it, though, he's still not a master of the game's hilarious, sadistic difficulty. Just watch what happens when the giant pig and its family arrive.

Imagine stepping into a warm, inviting hot tub. As you relax in the water, an attendant pours in some bath salts. You register a rise in the temperature, but think nothing of it. The attendant returns, this time sprinkling fragrant herbs into the water. It's getting hot in here. The attendant is back, pouring some concoction into the bubbling water. No, not bubbling. Boiling. That's when the lid comes down, and you realize that you're not being cleansed. You're being cooked. Welcome to Risk of Rain.
