While there's certainly plenty of off-the-shelf options out there for folks dissatisfied by the stock Rock Band drum kit, those looking to really dial things up to eleven may want to follow the lead of this modder from EDrums.info, who created a mesh head drum set with some wood, some new components, and plenty of skill. As you can see in the multi-page how-to linked below, however, this isn't exactly a one-day project (for mere mortals, at least), and there's no shortage of opportunities for complete disaster once you start tearing the original drum kit apart. If you persevere though, you'll not only be able to impress you friends with your Rock Band skills, but your actual drumming skills as well, as it can also be turned into a real drum kit with the addition of a drum module. And, yes, there is a video -- head on past the break to check it out.[Thanks, Jonathan A]

Playing Rock Band sometimes feels like the real thing, but what if it looked like the real thing? Ion, who make real drum kits, have announced that they will release a premium Rock Band 2 drum kit that will not only have realistic pads and cymbals (which you can custom-assign), but it will also be possible to plug the thing into a drum brain to turn the kit into a real electronic drum kit. If that craziness wasn't enough, Harmonix plans to gut some actual Fender Stratocasters and turn them into Rock Band guitars, which is either amazing or complete sacrilege depending on your musical religion.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

We've already seen a real drum kit modded for use with Rock Band, but that's unsurprisingly not the only bit of customization going on, as evidenced by this considerably scaled down kit created by David Yoon. While he hasn't provided a complete how-to, we're guessing quite a few folks out there will be able to follow his lead, with the mod consisting primarily of some felt covered tin lids, a pair of CDs and some foam for the foot pedal, and a couple of new piezo transducers from Radio Shack that replace the stock ones. Put that all together and you'll be reliving your desk-tapping days from high school in no time.

If you've been hankering after some Rock Band but hesitant to buy the full bundle because you've already got a couple Guitar Hero controllers lying around, or you've just beaten your existing drum kit to pieces, you're in luck -- Harmonix is now shipping the Rock Band Drum Kit to stores in the US and Canada, just a little bit later then we'd heard. The kit will retail for $80, which isn't all that bad -- especially considering the myriad alternate uses for the triggers once you get bored of playing "Maps" over and over again. Expect it to pop up soon in US stores, with a 2-8 week delay before it hits Canadian shelves.[Via Joystiq]

Not that it comes as much of a surprise after past Guitar Hero hacks, but it seems that the Rock Band drum kit has now found its way into PC land as well, with it at least one enterprising individual having hacked it for use with Windows. To do that yourself, you'll have to either follow some relatively simple directions, or take your chances with the install file provided at the link below, which promises to do most of the work for you. Head on over after the break for a video of the drum kit in action, such as it is.
