Richard "Demo Dick" Marcinko's first appearance in a game as Bethesda's Rogue Warrior doesn't seem to have left a fantastic taste in the mouths of many critics. Aside from the overabundance of profanity, complaints range from "generic" to "last-gen." It probably doesn't help that the game's being released during an ... ahem ... less than favorable part of the year. We wish you the best, Demo Dick! We hardly knew ye! MSXbox-World (4/10): "The reality is that there's little challenge as most of the stealth elements are as scripted as they come ... There's an almost last-gen feel to the game, with one embassy snow level being reminiscent of a level in Hitman." Gamervision (3.5/10): "There are only a few locations in the story, and they all look and play essentially the same. In fact, it feels as though they could have been presented in any order without losing much storytelling ... The only thing that is even remotely memorably is the voice of the protagonist, Mickey Rourke. He's constantly throwing out quips and one-liners in his grizzly, gritty voice, but even this seems forced." HellBored (2.1/10): "There is absolutely nothing about Rogue Warrior that deserves any attention ... Combine paltry numbers of enemies, small levels, and an absurdly easy approach and you can run through the entire thing in ... four hours." GamePro (1.5/5 Stars): "It's at best a generic FPS, and at worst a nigh-unplayable mess ... The game's dark, murky textures and limited visibility make aiming a chore, and prominent clipping, slowdown and texture popping only serve to further hinder the adrenaline-fueled covert-ops experience Rogue Warrior tries so hard to recreate" %Gallery-51192%

  • GameStop knocks $10 off Wet and Rogue Warrior pre-orders

GameStop is looking to entice those on the video game-purchasing fence (it's a real thing ... look it up!) regarding upcoming Bethesda-published titles Wet and Rogue Warrior by offering $10 off each game's price should they pre-order through the retailer. If you decide to snag both games (what are you, a millionaire?), we only ask that, should you leave the two games alone in a room, you keep the door cracked. We'd hate to see what kind of super-killer offspring they'd produce. [Via Bethesda Blog] Source – Wet at GameStop Source – Rogue Warrior at GameStop

  • Joystiq impressions: Rogue Warrior

We hadn't seen much of Rogue Warrior before Bethesda trotted it out at its showcase event in London last week. The game centers around the life of real-world Navy Seal Richard "Demo Dick" Marcinko and puts you in his incredibly violent shoes.Unfortunately, the character of Demo Dick is the only unique selling point that the game has and, while his constant swearing (in Mickey Rourke's voice, no less) and vicious finishing moves start off entertaining, the novelty soon wears off. At its heart, Rogue Warrior is a very generic first-person shooter, from what we saw. The game can be played through either stealthily or as a normal shooter, both of which benefit from the inclusion of a cover system. The most interesting parts of the game are the cinematic kill moves. These are very graphic stealth moves that can be performed if the enemy has not yet spotted you. %Gallery-51192%

  • Mickey Rourke takes lead in Rogue Warrior

Yes, when Mickey Rourke recovered from a disastrous, drug-fueled fall from grace with a stunning performance in The Wrestler and revitalized his career, this is exactly the sort of thing his legion of fans and well-wishers hoped he'd be propelled into. The actor will take the role of "the irreverent, battle-tested Richard "Demo Dick" Marcinko, a real-life Navy SEAL" in Bethesda's Rogue Warrior. In the game, based on the book series of the same name, players will control Marcinko/Rourke as he assaults a suspected North Korea ballistics base. Look for it in Q4 of this year on 360, PS3 and PC.

  • Zombie Studios' Blacklight becoming movie, comic, toaster oven

Well, not a toaster, but that just leaves more room on Rogue Warrior developer Zombie Studios' plate for more delicious money. The Seattle-based company revealed plans to bring its barely announced Blacklight first-person shooter to the big screen and comic books as part of a deal with Twentieth Century Fox studio Fox Atomic and production firm Union Entertainment. Blacklight, what little we know of it, will be set in the distant future, where a special ops team battle for "peace and security" in a story The Seattle Times describes as reminiscent of Apocalypse Now. Nothing is yet known of the comic, however both the movie and game will be penned by indie film writer Jason Dean Hall, most recently recognized at Sundance for his work on Ashton Kutcher's Spread. More ambitious still, Zombie Studios describes Blacklight a "military action franchise," though we're not sure you're technically allowed to call a cow a franchise, let alone milk it before the first game is even the subject for debate.

One of our loyal X3F Army tipsters has outed himself as an employee of GameStop, but to make up for it he sent us a camera phone image of a few release dates. While you should take these dates with a grain of salt some of them are accurate, specifically Ninja Gaiden 2, Soul Calibur IV and Civilization Revolution.Fueling the fire of the Sega's Sonic Unleashed leak is a release date of November 4 for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PS2. EA's NFL Head Coach 09 is slated for a September 3 release and based on the release of the original in relation to Madden, the time frame seems accurate. A few titles we haven't heard much from are Bethesda Softworks' Rogue Warrior (November 10) and Edios Interactive's Shellshock 2: Blood Trails (September 1), which is being developed by the team at Rebellion.Other dates include Sierra's Prototype from Radical and the Xbox 360 exclusive Splinter Cell: Conviction from Ubisoft which are dated for October 21 and October 2 respectfully.Remember, pre-order focused retailers tend to guess-timate releases on a regular basis to structure their sales goals for the final two quarters of the year. However, some of the names on this list make us really glad we have a rumor category.[Thanks, Travisto]

Though Bethesda has been exclusively linked to Fallout 3 as of late, the developer had also been working with Zombie Studios on a tactical shooter based on Dick Marcinko's Rogue Warrior book series. Now that we've jogged your memory, you should know that the game will not be on display at this year's E3 summit.Speaking to FiringSquad, Bethesda's Vice President of PR and marketing Pete Hines said, "We aren't talking about RW until we're ready to show what we've been up to." Rogue Warrior, powered by the Unreal Engine 3, was originally scheduled for release this year on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

  • Rogue Warrior screenshots -- what a hairy arm!

Bethesda, company behind that little ol' game called Oblivion, have been hard at work a new FPS entitled Rogue Warrior. Doubtless, you'll play some loner mercenary who ends up taking whatever side you want in a conflict between multiple forces (if Oblivion is any indicator of the freedom these guys will allot you in this game). The game is due out this year sometime for the PC, 360, and PS3.Look at the screenshots, though. They're... strange. They look good in some respects, but kind of "meh" in others. The hairy arm is a nice touch, but the gun looks a bit... blocky? Wait, nevermind, guns are supposed to be symmetrical and blocky or else they'd explode all over you. Screens look pretty good. We'll keep an eye on this game, for sure.

  • Bethesda's Rogue Warrior to battle Ubi's Tom Clancy forces

Bethesda Softworks and Zombie Studios want a piece of the tactical-shooter market. The two are teaming up to adapt Dick Marcinko's Rogue Warrior book series into an Unreal 3-driven FPS for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.Rogue Warrior will undoubtedly go up against any number of Ubisoft's established Tom Clancy franchises of similar nature, including Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, when it releases later next year. It's a difficult challenge, but there are a few details that are already setting Bethesda's project apart.Rogue Warrior's campaign mode will feature on-the-fly (jump-in, jump-out) co-op, similar to what Epic's offering in Gears of War, only Bethesda and Zombie plan to allow up to four players. On the multiplayer side, a map generating system using "tiles" is reported to provide 200 unique map variations on both day and night settings. Rogue Warrior will also benefit from a total of 10 multiplayer modes. Watch out, Ubi![Thanks, Matt]

We told you that Bethesda was partnering with Zombie Studios to create a new FPS on Wednesday. Now we have the first handful of screenshots from the game, titled Rogue Warrior. Said Mark Long, producer at Zombie Studios,"Rogue Warrior is the game we've been waiting to make for years. We're using terrific technology in a way that's different from other games - we have a unique HUD and control system for your teammates, on-the-fly co-op play, and we've really focused our efforts on making multiplayer more fun and challenging by giving you lots of modes and hundreds of maps you can see and play. We're thrilled to be working with Bethesda on this new initiative using a brand we know and love." We've now uncovered a handful of screenshots from the game. The screens aren't the greatest quality -- they almost look like scans -- but they do give us an idea of the game's graphical fidelity. The images look decent, though certain parts -- notably the ground texture -- have a last gen quality to them. Still, the graphics are likely to improve considering the game was officially announced only days ago. Also, the custom map feature sounds interesting as well. We've all played GRAW, and many of you have tried the Rainbow Six: Vegas demo, so what do you think? Does Rogue Warrior stand a chance?

  • Bethesda sets its sights on the FPS genre

According to the latest issue of OXM (Via 360Monster), Bethesda is working on a new first person shooter with Zombie Studios. Entitled Rogue Warrior, Bethesda hopes to make a game that will compete with the likes of GRAW and Rainbow 6: Vegas. Gamers will recognize Zombie Studios as the developers of Shadow Ops. The article doesn't specify, but a quick search revealed a book about anti-terrorism with the same title, upon which the game may be based. Bethesda hopes to separate Rogue Warrior from similar games by spicing up the multiplayer options. One particularly interesting feature is the ability of each team to configure a map prior to a match. The maps are composed of three sections. Each team chooses an outer section, while the computer randomly decides the center section. The player chosen sections are kept secret from the opposing team. Thus, each team starts in familiar territory and must venture into unknown territory. It is Bethesda's hope that this will keep the experience fresh. Sounds like a pretty cool feature to us. What do you think?
