1UP reports that the recently revealed "next Silent Hill" game will not, in fact, be developed by Climax, which is fresh from the totally awesome Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Instead, the lead has been taken by Vatra Games, a Czech studio whose only other credit is retro relaunch Rush'N Attack: Ex-Patriot, also announced on Friday. It's not that we think Vatra will do a bad job -- we frankly have no clue what they'll do. But we were so looking forward to seeing where Climax took the franchise after Shattered Memories that it's hard to not be a little deflated and, perhaps, even ... shattered by its absence. On a slightly more informative note, Vatra's official page says it's working on two games for PS3, 360 and PC, so that likely gives an indication of the platforms on which the new Silent Hill will appear.

Why should Bionic Commando: Rearmed be the only downloadable, 2.5D re-imagining of a classic '80s-era game starring a lone soldier up against an evil regime? Konami's thought exactly -- or so it would seem. That's because the publisher is reviving Rush'n Attack, its 1985 side-scrolling "kill all Commies" shooter-stabber, in the form of Rush'N Attack: Ex-Patriot for XBLA and PSN. During a hands-off demonstration, I caught a brief preview of the game -- which features the quintessential lone operative going back behind enemy lines to rescue POWs -- at yesterday's Konami Gamers Night and, well, it kind of reminded me of another recent downloadable game: Shadow Complex. The new Rush'N Attack does look a lot more arcadey and linear than last year's "Metroidvania" hit on XBLA, with its patriot (or is that ex-patriot?) stealth-knifing bad guys, stealing their guns and rushing off. The other notable detail was the color palette, which was saturated in a lot of green and red. Rush'N Attack: Ex-Patriot is scheduled for release this fall and will make its playable debut at E3. Xbox Live Arcade is set for yet another double shot of goodness this week with the release of both Rush n' Attack and Xevious. Both considered genuine arcade classics Xevious and Rush n' Attack will each be available for 400 MS Points. For those unaware of Rush n' Attack, the game is a side-scrolling action game in which players struggle to free prisoners of war while simultaneously stabbing as many foreign militants as possible. As is expected of retro Arcade releases, the game features both original and enhanced graphics. Xevious is a vertical shooter that tasks players with, um, shooting stuff. Yesterday we mentioned that an new franchise was to be announced for XBLA sometime during all this TGS/X06 hullballoo. We even asked all of you for your best guess. Well, it looks like we got our anwer sooner rather than later, and the answer will most likely be a disappointment to many. In total, four new franchises have been announced, and they are: Gyruss New Rally-X Rush'n Attack Yie Ar Kung Fu (Japan only) While these games are a welcome addition (especially Rush'n Attack), it falls well short of our hope for original content -- or even an XBLA specific entry to a classic franchise. We hold out hope that a real contender will emerge before all is said and done. But, on to business. We said we'd name drop whoever guessed right and ... oh, wait ... nobody got it. In that case, we'll just give the Perv of the Week Award® to reader, AOE, for suggesting Boon-Ga Boon-Ga "complete with custom controller." Sick, man.
