Even though all signs indicate Samsung will be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/22/samsung-in-last-stage-talks-to-use-google-tv-will-show-off-ha/">joining the Google TV party shortly</a>, it's not going to give up on its own existing Smart TV platform just yet. We don't know if it will run the two side by side as it has operated with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/yahoowidgets">Yahoo! Widgets</a>, but the Korean manufacturer has announced it plans to release version 3.0 of its SDK January 5th. The new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsung-apps-opens-home-theater-devices-to-software-developers/">Samsung Apps</a> toolkit supports <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/samsung-apps-demo-ties-phone-and-tv-together-in-wiimote-like-bliss/">mobile devices and TV sets</a>, and lets developers build in support for remote controls, as well as USB mice, keyboards or gamepads. Of course, not all devs will work for free, so they're also adding a way for them to get paid through the built-in payment system or advertisements. Currently, Samsung claims 25,000 developers from 140 countries in its forums, but we'll have to wait until CES 2012 to find out if its products <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/samsung-releases-ces-2012-teaser-hints-at-upcoming-smart-tv-pro/">live up to the hype</a> and attract more <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/are-you-watching-this-sports-tracker-for-android-adds-remote-co/">innovative</a> software to the segment.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/03/samsungs-smart-tv-sdk-30-usb-advertisements/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung's Smart TV SDK reaches 3.0 with support for USB controllers, payment and ads</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/03/samsungs-smart-tv-sdk-30-usb-advertisements/">Samsung's Smart TV SDK reaches 3.0 with support for USB controllers, payment and ads</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 02:48:00 EST. Well, it seems as if the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/19/skype-turns-into-santa-gives-you-free-airport-wifi-during-the-h/">holiday freebies</a> won't stop coming. Chances are, if you own a smartphone you're an app <em>collectionista</em> (sorry, guys), and if you've got a certain Samsung Galaxy device in particular you're about to get a major boost to your application arsenal. In the spirit of the holidays, or maybe its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/samsung-apps-store-crosses-100-million-downloads/">100 million downloads</a>, Sammy's going to hook you up with some free virtual treats from its Apps store. The selection of up to 16 games won't be available for the entire line of galactic phones -- and may vary by region -- but if you own a Galaxy WiFi 5.0, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Ace or Galaxy Gio, then you are amongst the lucky ones. Included in the deal are games such as: <em>Air Penguin</em>, <em>Air Attack HD</em>, <em>Bubble Fish</em>, <em>Samurai 2</em> and a few others (full list after the break). There's no word on when the bargain ends, so hop into the store before you miss out.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/samsungs-in-a-gifting-mood-is-giving-away-up-to-16-free-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung's in a gifting mood, is giving away up to 16 free games for select Galaxy devices</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/samsungs-in-a-gifting-mood-is-giving-away-up-to-16-free-games/">Samsung's in a gifting mood, is giving away up to 16 free games for select Galaxy devices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 19:49:00 EST. While finding out precisely how many people are actually using its apps (over <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/samsung-apps-store-crosses-100-million-downloads/">100 million downloaded</a>) is still tricky, Samsung has proudly announced there are over two million units out there packing its Smart TV platform. That count includes over 730,000 units in North America alone, and according to the company, outpaces the initial uptake of LED lit TVs. Of course, having a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsungapps">Samsung Apps</a> store is nothing without apps to put in it, and over the UK there's a new BBC News app that is currently available exclusively on the Samsung platform. If you've picked up one of the TVs with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/16/samsungs-qwerty-flip-smart-tv-remote-is-official-along-with-new/">dual sided remote</a>, let us know how it's going so far in the comments below.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/20/samsung-smart-tv-platform-installed-base-passes-two-million-add/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung Smart TV platform installed base passes two million, adds BBC News app</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/20/samsung-smart-tv-platform-installed-base-passes-two-million-add/">Samsung Smart TV platform installed base passes two million, adds BBC News app</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 13:36:00 EST. No doubt still buzzing from hitting the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/samsung-apps-store-crosses-100-million-downloads/">100 millionth download milestone</a> back in March, Samsung is making it even easier for Apps customers to use the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsung%20apps/">mobile/HDTV storefront</a> -- well, consumers in Europe and Asia, at least. The company announced this week that it has streamlined the purchasing process for the store, letting users tack payments onto their phone bill or SIM card balance. The upgrade is being rolled out in the UK, Germany, Thailand, India, among others, with even more countries coming later this year. The rest of the world will have to continue paying for apps the old fashioned way: sticking a check in a bottle and praying it floats all the way to Korea. More info on the press release after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/samsung-makes-it-easier-for-you-to-buy-stuff-from-its-apps-store/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung makes it easier for you to buy stuff from its Apps store</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/samsung-makes-it-easier-for-you-to-buy-stuff-from-its-apps-store/">Samsung makes it easier for you to buy stuff from its Apps store</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 02 May 2011 22:58:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Alright, so it may have a bit of an advantage being on both cellphones <em>and</em> TVs, but that's not stopping Samsung from boasting that its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsungapps">Apps store</a> has now joined the 100 million download club. That comes just ten months after it launched, and it looks like Samsung can largely thank Europe for reaching the milestone -- France had the most number of downloads followed by Germany and Spain, and the three countries combined accounted for 40 percent of all downloads from the store, which now has more than 13,000 apps.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/samsung-apps-store-crosses-100-million-downloads/">Samsung Apps store crosses 100 million downloads</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 10:38:00 EST. Samsung's 2011 product showcase is underway in New York City and while most of these products we got a peek at during CES, it's only finally ready to show off the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/samsungs-new-dual-sided-qwerty-remote-for-smart-tvs/">new QWERTY flip remote</a> for its smart TVs. The QWERTY TV remote is looking a lot sleeker in its glamour shot than it did in the FCC tests weeks ago, and is available in the box with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/samsung-touts-bluetooth-3d-support-on-led-8000-7000-hdtv-line/">all D7000 and D8000 model HDTVs</a>, or as an add-on compatible with the D6300 line and above (no mention of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/08/samsung-smart-touch-remote-and-smart-tv-hands-on/">Smart Touch remote</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/samsung-shows-off-google-tv-companion-box-and-blu-ray-player/">Google TV</a> devices in the press release we received.) Samsung's also putting a lot of stock in its new lighter 3D glasses and officially announced the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/09/samsung-3d-starter-kit-gets-3dtv-and-blu-ray-buyers-started/">3D Starter Kit</a> that includes two pairs along with a copy of <em>Megamind </em>and all the <em>Shrek </em>movies on Blu-ray 3D, along with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/20/samsung-adds-prescription-lens-option-to-its-active-shutter-3d-gl/">prescription-ready</a> models for kids and adults. Finally, an app market is nothing without apps, and there's two new ones to announce today with <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/hbogo">HBO GO</a> making its debut on the TV and MTV Music Meter. Check the details (Update: now including MSRPs!) in the press release after the break and the gallery for a few pictures.<br />

<strong>Updated</strong>: We got a few minutes to play around with the new QWERTY flip remote after Samsung's NYC press event today. It's not exactly the most glamorous handheld keyboard remote control out there with its monochrome screen, although we do like that the center of the D-pad can me morphed into a touch sensitive mouse-like control. Okay, so this thing isn't exactly ground breaking, but check out the shots below for a closer look. <br />

First it was the PlayStation 3, then it was the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/15/google-tv-gets-a-major-update-with-new-netflix-movable-dual-vie/">Google TV</a> and now it appears <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsungapps">Samsung Apps</a> compatible HDTVs feature the new look of Netflix's Watch Instantly interface. According to our reader Bruce, the new UI popped up after he upgraded the firmware on his UN46C6500 LCD HDTV and, like on the other platforms, it adds the ability to search through Netflix's catalog right on the device -- no adding DVDs to your queue though, that's still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/netflix-removing-add-to-dvd-queue-button-from-tv-streamers-ex/">PC or mobile only</a>. Of course, after our experience with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/19/netflixs-new-ps3-app-includes-new-features-new-headaches-vide/">PS3's multiple UI madness </a>we know how much Netflix likes to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/07/netflix-ported-webkit-to-the-ps3-to-enable-html5-goodies-a-dyna/">test multiple versions of its app</a> at once, so we wouldn't be surprised if everyone isn't seeing this immediately, just keep an eye out if your app suddenly asks to be reactivated again and you should be in for the new version.<br />

We didn't spot this one at CES where the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/08/samsung-smart-touch-remote-and-smart-tv-hands-on/">phone-like</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/08/samsung-smart-touch-remote-and-smart-tv-hands-on/">RMC30D</a> and standard remotes were the only options, but it looks like Samsung has an alternative Bluetooth remote planned for its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/samsung-touts-bluetooth-3d-support-on-led-8000-7000-hdtv-line/">Smart TVs</a> (but not any <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/samsung-shows-off-google-tv-companion-box-and-blu-ray-player/">Google TV products</a> judging by that Yahoo! button on the remote side) that features standard buttons on one side and a full QWERTY keyboard on the other, much like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/boxee-box-unboxing-and-hands-on/#3570984">Boxee Box's remote</a>. Judging by the ruler in the remarkably unflattering FCC photos, this one appears to be a bit larger and it's not immediately clear what that display on the QWERTY side is for. Obviously, if there's any chance users will be logging into their various Twitter or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/09/could-this-be-the-year-we-get-to-ditch-the-cable-box/">Comcast/Time Warner</a> accounts on the TV they'll need something better than T9 to do it, but we'll have to wait to get our hands on this one to know if it's an improvement. Check the gallery for a few more pictures, we'd expect some kind of announcement on the RMC-QTD1 before Samsung's 2011 line of TVs hit stores.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Reaching two million downloads in a year may seem paltry considering Apple's app store delivered <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/14/apples-app-store-crosses-the-1-5-billion-download-mark/">1.5 billion</a> downloads in its first year, and the Mac app store passed one million downloads <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/mac-app-store-hits-one-million-downloads-on-day-one/">on opening day</a>. Still, it's the largest number we've seen from a TV maker, and when you factor in that Samsung's store just passed one million downloads back in November, it seems the Korean tech giant has a good thing going. Naturally, we knew the company was serious about apps when it announced the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/samsung-puts-up-cash-hdtvs-for-developers-in-free-the-tv-apps/">Free the TV contest</a> late last summer to lure developers to the platform, and today the app store is available in over 120 countries and features roughly 380 applications, 259 of which are free. It also doesn't hurt that the brand has already sold boatloads of Smart TVs and plans to ship 12 million more in 2011. The question is, when the store hits the 10 million mark, can Samsung possibly pull off a new interpretive dance that tops its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/live-from-samsungs-ces-2011-keynote/">2011 CES keynote</a>? We certainly hope so. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/espn">ESPN's</a> ScoreCenter app has been a popular one on Android and iOS devices, but today the broadcaster has taken another step by bringing it to connected TVs. Samsung enabled TVs will be the first to see it in the Samsung App Store, and use it to pull up scoreboards, schedules and live game details along the top, bottom or sides of the screen. According to <em>AdAge</em>, it had planned to bring TV apps using <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ebif">EBIF</a> to market years ago, but delays mean this is the first one to see the light of day. No word on which connected TV will see ScoreCenter next, but for now you can check out a demo video at the source link.<br />

Samsung's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/samsung-shows-off-portable-htib-3d-blu-ray-player-options-and-t/">portable Blu-ray player</a> has been mostly a special order item since its unveiling last month, easily available at online shops but not so much offline. If you'd like to feel the cardboard box in your hands before dropping $499 on a 3D-ready, WiFi-packing, Samsung Apps enabled clamshell then stop by Best Buy where one of our readers spotted this unit, despite it being listed as online only / ship to store for ordering on the website. Of course, if you're that kind of instant gratification nut you'll probably be using the Netflix streaming instead of discs, but that's your choice.<br />

Earlier today, Samsung <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/samsung-shows-off-portable-htib-3d-blu-ray-player-options-and-t/">pulled the curtain off</a> (quite literally, might we add) its newest 3DTVs and the world's first portable 3D Blu-ray player at its New York City press conference. We were able to slap on a pair of the 3D specs and spend a bit of time staring at the (admittedly amazing) 65-inch LED 3DTV, the fairly mediocre sub-$1,000 720p 3DTV as well as form some early impressions of the Blu-ray player. We've got you covered with some pictures below, but mosey on past the break to check our two pennies on each of the new products. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-blu-ray-portable-hands-on/">Samsung BDC800 portable Blu-ray hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-blu-ray-portable-hands-on/#3252890"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samblu-19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-blu-ray-portable-hands-on/#3252891"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samblu-18_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-blu-ray-portable-hands-on/#3252892"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samblu-17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-blu-ray-portable-hands-on/#3252893"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samblu-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-blu-ray-portable-hands-on/#3252894"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samblu-15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-tv-hands-on/">Samsung UN65C8000 and PN50C490 hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-tv-hands-on/#3252916"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samtv-26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-tv-hands-on/#3252917"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samtv-25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-tv-hands-on/#3252918"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samtv-24_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-tv-hands-on/#3252919"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samtv-23_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-tv-hands-on/#3252920"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/2010-08-10samtv-22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/samsungs-3d-gala-65-inch-un65c8000-50-inch-pn50c490-and-bd-c/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung's 3D gala: 65-inch UN65C8000, 50-inch PN50C490, and BD-C8000 eyes-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/samsungs-3d-gala-65-inch-un65c8000-50-inch-pn50c490-and-bd-c/">Samsung's 3D gala: 65-inch UN65C8000, 50-inch PN50C490, and BD-C8000 eyes-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 15:31:00 EST. Samsung's HDTV-based <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsungapps">App Store</a> has doubled in size since it was launched at CES but apparently that's not enough, so it's putting up 500 stacks plus several home theater packages in the "Free the TV Apps" contest. For those skilled in Java, XML and Flash Lite who are interested in getting their app up on TVs and Blu-ray players next to ESPN Next Level, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/hands-on-with-hulu-plus-via-samsung-hdtv-iphone-and-ipad/">Hulu Plus</a>, a soon to launch 3D Video On Demand app and all the rest, the contest runs from today through November 11, and requires a working app submission and video description. By the end, 14 developers will walk away with between $1,000 and $200,000 each, plus a 3DTV, Blu-ray player and starter kit for each of them . We figure developing for a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsung-apps-opens-home-theater-devices-to-software-developers/">Samsung Apps</a> platform with a few million network connected devices out there and more shipping every day is a secondary bonus (unless <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/googletv,samsung/">Google TV</a> is where you'd rather be) but check out the video and press release after the break or the competition website if you're still not entirely sure it's worth the effort.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/samsung-puts-up-cash-hdtvs-for-developers-in-free-the-tv-apps/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung puts up cash, HDTVs for developers in 'Free the TV Apps' contest</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/samsung-puts-up-cash-hdtvs-for-developers-in-free-the-tv-apps/">Samsung puts up cash, HDTVs for developers in 'Free the TV Apps' contest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. Just because the US has gone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/e32010">gaming crazy</a> these past couple of days doesn't mean the smartphone world has stopped turning. Samsung trotted out its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/galaxys">Galaxy S</a> handset last night in London, and we were naturally there to try and glean a better understanding of where this 4-inch Android 2.1 device fits in our wishlist hierarchy. It's quite the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/samsung-announces-galaxy-s-android-smartphone/">stat sheet stuffer</a>, as we're sure you're aware, and it strikes an alluring figure for those looking to get on the true do-it-all smartphone bandwagon. Check out our latest impressions -- replete with video and a whole gallery dedicated to the Super AMOLED screen's performance in sunlight -- just past the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-galaxy-s-preview/">Samsung Galaxy S preview</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-galaxy-s-preview/#3083021"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0615samsgalaxs9y048_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-galaxy-s-preview/#3083039"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0615samsgalaxs9y065_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-galaxy-s-preview/#3083074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0615samsgalaxs9y092_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-galaxy-s-preview/#3083019"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0615samsgalaxs9y046_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-galaxy-s-preview/#3083061"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0615samsgalaxs9y087_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/samsung-galaxy-s-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung Galaxy S preview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/samsung-galaxy-s-preview/">Samsung Galaxy S preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 07:35:00 EST. Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bada">bada</a>, heard of it? Samsung sure hopes so as it's betting heavily on the OS in its battle with Nokia to make cheap smartphones globally accessible. Today Samsung is introducing the Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330) QWERTY slider at CommunicAsia 2010. Both handsets are quad-band GPRS/EDGE (yup, no 3G) with 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1, a 3.2-inch TFT LCD, 3 megapixel camera with video recorder, A-GPS, and 80MB of memory with up to 16GB of microSD expansion. The all important user experience is handled by the TouchWiz 3.0 UI and bada's "social hub" that tightly knits together all your communications with contacts, be that over email, IM, or social networking sites. Both phones will be available in Russia and South East Asia starting in August.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsungs-wave-2-and-wave-2-pro-slider-join-the-bada-os-party/">Samsung's Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro slider join the bada OS party</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsungs-wave-2-and-wave-2-pro-slider-join-the-bada-os-party/#3079137"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/wave2-s5250-product-image-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsungs-wave-2-and-wave-2-pro-slider-join-the-bada-os-party/#3079138"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/wave2-s5250-product-image-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsungs-wave-2-and-wave-2-pro-slider-join-the-bada-os-party/#3079139"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/wave2-s5250-product-image-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/samsungs-wave-2-and-wave-2-pro-slider-join-the-bada-os-party/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung's Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro slider join the bada OS party</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/samsungs-wave-2-and-wave-2-pro-slider-join-the-bada-os-party/">Samsung's Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro slider join the bada OS party</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 01:28:00 EST. We still don't know <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/21/google-tv-who-is-the-competition-and-what-are-they-saying-about/">if Samsung will put Google's Android into its TVs</a>, but it has recently launched Google Maps and Facebook as a part of its existing Samsung Apps platform. There aren't a lot of details in the press release (included after the break) but buyers of most of the 2010 line HDTVs, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/11/samsung-bd-c6500-and-bd-c5500-blu-ray-players-now-shipping/">Blu-ray players</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsung-apps-opens-home-theater-devices-to-software-developers/">HTIB systems</a> should have access to them. We've seen demos of how Samsung Apps <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/samsung-apps-demo-ties-phone-and-tv-together-in-wiimote-like-bliss/">can tie phones and TVs together </a>easily, but can a mere Google Maps app match the Google TVs ability to push info back and forth from device to device? The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/07/xbox-360s-new-zune-last-fm-facebook-and-twitter-features-deta/">Facebook app on Xbox 360</a> is moderately useful if only as a way to browse photo albums on the HDTV, so we'll also be waiting to find out if it will at least match that functionality.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/11/google-maps-facebook-come-to-samsung-tvs-and-blu-ray-players/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Google Maps, Facebook come to Samsung TVs &amp; Blu-ray players</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/11/google-maps-facebook-come-to-samsung-tvs-and-blu-ray-players/">Google Maps, Facebook come to Samsung TVs &amp; Blu-ray players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 22:19:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/googletv">Google TV </a>has landed and is already sending ripples through the marketplace, but what about all the companies already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/widgets">blending internet and TV</a>? Whether they are already planning to work with the new initiative (Rovi), even more firmly staking a claim on their existing technology and vision for the connected TV (Microsoft, Yahoo), sounding like it's an option for the future (Samsung, VIZIO, Boxee) or already working on their own Android on TV projects (People of Lava, MIPS) each one should tell a little bit about where this market is headed in the coming months and years. Read on for their statements -- and a quick breakdown of what each is bringing to the table in case you weren't already running a network cable to your HDTV years ago.<br />

Tablet computers. Just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/03/apple-sells-1-000-000-ipads-in-revolutions-first-month/">like <i>that</i></a> a product category has been reborn and proven viable as a money making machine. Now the scramble is on to fill the void by companies big and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/joojoo">small</a>. Samsung, a big name in the UMPC debacle (that's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsung%2Cq1">Q1</a> to the right) with its own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/16/samsung-confirms-slate-pc-in-the-works/">confirmed tablet ambitions</a>, looks prepped to deliver product this summer if Korean pub <i>Etnews</i> is to be believed. First up, the OS: Android. Samsung's so-called "S-Pad" (the tentative name spawned under its S-Project initiative) will display Google's smartphone OS on a supposed 7-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/super%20amoled">Super AMOLED</a> display with WiFi and 3G data connectivity -- the latter supplied by SK Telecom who will supposedly help distribute the device. It'll also bring an iPad-esque USB dock and content from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/17/samsungs-sliding-handwriting-recognizing-sne-60k-e-reader-hits/">Kyobo books</a> (Korea's largest bookstore) and Samsung's own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsung%20apps">Samsung Apps</a> application store. If true, we should expect to see Samsung's S-Pad launch in August. While no price has been given you can expect the cost to be exorbitant thanks to that extra large Super AMOLED display unless SK Telecom can push it down through ample subsidies.<br />

By some reports <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/01/who-doesnt-want-android-and-intel-in-their-hdtv-panasonic-and-sa/">Panasonic and Samsung</a> were going to easily pass on Sony / Google / Intel's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/17/google-tv-android-based-web-platform-for-the-living-room-with/">Google TV</a> initiative, but a report today from the <i>Korea Herald </i>indicates that may not be the case. While LG has stated it "has not considered" making a Google TV, the newspaper states an executive from Samsung says they are looking into making Android-powered TVs. We'll see if the company is too worried about losing control over its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsungapps">Samsung Apps</a> marketplace to jump in --or just turned off by the high price Panasonic claimed as a deterrent -- but we'd estimate three or four more <strike>completely bogus</strike> rumors of unknown provenance before we hear anything official from the parties involved.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/26/samsung-still-thinking-over-google-tv/">Samsung still thinking over Google TV?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 26 Apr 2010 23:55:00 EST. Sure, selling $150~ <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/3dglasses">3D glasses</a> and $80~ WiFi adapters for their HDTVs is no problem, but according to <i>Bloomberg </i>Samsung and Panasonic have drawn the line at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/17/google-tv-android-based-web-platform-for-the-living-room-with/">rumored Google TV initiative</a>. Panasonic VP Bob Perry said in an interview that the Intel hardware to run <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android,stb">Android</a> "adds too much to the cost of the set," while Samsung similarly declined to join, looking towards a future built on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsungapps">its own apps platform</a>. The widget experience at CES 2010 did appear to be much <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/samsung-apps-demo-ties-phone-and-tv-together-in-wiimote-like-bliss/">improved</a>, but so far the sometimes slow and clunky interfaces have left us with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/24/intel-announces-atom-ce4100-for-insanely-powerful-cable-boxes-an/">CE4100</a> dreams and open Market wishes. Judging by our last poll on the subject, opinions on the future of such displays <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/07/12/poll-would-you-buy-a-tv-running-chromeos/">are split</a>, but without anything in the way of an official announcement from the Google / Intel / Sony / Logitech cabal we'll hold off on deciding who has made the right choice.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/01/who-doesnt-want-android-and-intel-in-their-hdtv-panasonic-and-sa/">Who doesn't want Android and Intel in their HDTV? Panasonic and LG won't be the only ones with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/skype-hd-720p-videocalling-from-pcs-or-directly-through-lg-and-pa/">Skype-enabled HDTVs</a>, though we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/12/samsungs-3d-hdtvs-arrive-february-26-starting-at-just-under-2/">peeped it in the specs earlier</a>, Samsung has officially announced its new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/25/samsungs-first-3d-tv-now-available-in-the-us-all-55-inches-of/">7000</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsungs-2010-lcds-and-plasmas-include-the-skinny-touchscreen-re/">8000</a> series televisions will also include access. Accessible through the embedded <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsungapps">Samsung Apps</a> service, it appears it will work with the new HD video processing webcams just like the others, so users can log in to or create an account with the remote then make video or voice calls away from the PC. We heard at CES those cameras could run as high as $200, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/panasonic-demos-skype-on-vieracast-at-ces-video/">check out the CES 2010 demo from Panasonic</a> to see if couch videoconferencing is worth the additional expense.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/25/samsung-makes-skype-for-new-led-lit-hdtvs-official/">Samsung makes Skype for new LED lit HDTVs official</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 25 Feb 2010 15:56:00 EST. When <i>Avatar</i> will make its Blu-ray 3D debut is still officially up in the air, but thanks to Samsung's European line show, <em>TechRadar</em> says we can expect <i><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/monsters-vs-aliens-to-be-among-the-first-3d-blu-ray-titles/">Monsters vs. Aliens</a> </i>in March (at least in the U.K.) It will initially be available only to purchasers of new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/12/samsungs-3d-hdtvs-arrive-february-26-starting-at-just-under-2/">Samsung 3D HDTVs</a> (called the U7000, U8000 or U9000 series of LCDs and PDP7000 plasmas over there) or Blu-ray players, an interesting choice that has us wondering when wider 3D releases will hit, or if we'll need to wait for the summer's PS3 firmware update before that happens. Still, that wasn't all Samsung had to say, also mentioning plans to add movie rentals from LoveFilm and access to BBC's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iplayer/">iPlayer</a> to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SamsungApps/">Apps</a> service for U.K. buyers in April.<br />

Can't wait to get your hands on some of Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsungs-2010-blu-ray-players-bring-3d-transparency-and-thinness/">2010 lineup of Blu-ray players</a>? The BD-C5500 and BD-C6500 are both currently available and shipping on Amazon for $199 and $299, respectively. Both share a slim 39mm profile, although <strike>only</strike> the BD-C6500 has a promised 15-second boot time and access to the updated version Internet@TV including <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsung-apps-opens-home-theater-devices-to-software-developers/">Samsung Apps</a>. Our wait for the sunroof sporting BD-C6900 3D capable model continues.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: We checked with Samsung and confirmed all models in the 2010 lineup feature Internet@TV and Samsung Apps access, though if you're impatient and hate waiting you'll have to get in the BD-C6500 (above) and not the BD-C5500 (pictured after the break.)<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/11/samsung-bd-c6500-and-bd-c5500-blu-ray-players-now-shipping/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung BD-C6500 &amp; BD-C5500 Blu-ray players now shipping</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/11/samsung-bd-c6500-and-bd-c5500-blu-ray-players-now-shipping/">Samsung BD-C6500 &amp; BD-C5500 Blu-ray players now shipping</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 11 Feb 2010 15:32:00 EST. It feels like we just left our shutter glasses behind at CES, but already a few of Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsungs-2010-blu-ray-players-bring-3d-transparency-and-thinness/">new 2010 Blu-ray players</a> (all featuring <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/internet@tv">Internet@TV</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsung-apps-opens-home-theater-devices-to-software-developers/">Samsung Apps</a> features) have popped up for preorders on Amazon, including the 3D playing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bd-c6900/">BD-C6900</a>. The company just announced <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2010/01/26/samsungs-240hz-3dtvs-now-in-mass-production/">240HZ 3D LCDs have begun mass production</a> and isn't waiting for the competition before diving in, issuing the first price we've seen for one of the new players at a penny shy of $400. Moving down the line the super slim and woodgrain textured, but 2D only, BD-C7500 is also $399.99, while the speedy BD-C6500 and its promised 15 second bootup time is set for $299. The entry level and eco-focused BD-C5500 is still unpriced but instead of asking whether you can afford the price of a 3D Blu-ray player, ask yourself if you can afford not to own a Blu-ray player with a hole in the top. The answer should be obvious.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Whoops, and now they're gone, disappearing from Amazon as quickly as they came. Will that pricing information stick? We'll wait for an official announcement, but they all seem probable from here.<br />

The mobile component of Samsung's app download portal, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SamsungApps/">Samsung Apps</a>, is taking a bold leap this month into four more territories: Singapore, Germany, Brazil, and China. Users of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/OmniaII/">Omnia II</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/OmniaLite/">Omnia Lite</a> in those parts can download the Apps installer from Sammy's site, setting up a one-stop shop on the phone for game downloads (well, not just games, but there <em>are</em> a lot of games in there) over 3G and WiFi connections -- heck, even 2G connections will apparently work, which probably explains why they're going to effectively be able to take it to China right now. And even if you're too lazy to download it (or -- perish the thought -- you don't want it), don't worry: starting the middle of next month, phones shipped to those regions will have Samsung Apps preinstalled.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/19/samsung-apps-coming-to-four-more-countries/">Samsung Apps coming to four more countries</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 12:30:00 EST. Wondering what kind of apps are enabled by the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsung-apps-opens-home-theater-devices-to-software-developers/">world's first HDTV-based application store</a>"? Check out this CES show floor demo of a cross platform game tying together a Samsung flat-screen TV and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/31/samsung-application-store-announced-the-mobile-mall-gets-a-litt/">cellphone</a> to experience the magic of virtual fishing. We'll probably keep our dedicated systems for gaming, but for a slight hint of what a crossplatform app store has to offer, by all means take a look.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/samsung-apps-demo-ties-phone-and-tv-together-in-wiimote-like-bliss/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung Apps demo ties phone &amp; TV together in Wiimote-like bliss</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/samsung-apps-demo-ties-phone-and-tv-together-in-wiimote-like-bliss/">Samsung Apps demo ties phone &amp; TV together in Wiimote-like bliss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 16:08:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Congratulations, you're <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/live-from-samsungs-ces-2010-press-conference/">now living in the world of Samsung Apps</a>, which the company calls the "world's first HDTV-based application store" allowing for apps that work across multiple home theater devices and even a few cellphones. This extension of the Internet@TV platform will launch in the spring with a bundle of free apps, with paid ones to follow later. They're saying how much more fun it will be building apps for a 55-inch screen than one that's just 3-inches, but we'll have to wait for a floor hands on experience with a few to consider the possibilities. Check the PR after the break, confirmed participants include: Accedo Broadband, AccuWeather.com, The Associated Press, Blockbuster, Fashion TV, Netflix, Picasa, Pandora, Rovi, Travel Channel, Twitter, USA TODAY, and Vudu.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsung-apps-opens-home-theater-devices-to-software-developers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung Apps opens home theater devices to software developers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/samsung-apps-opens-home-theater-devices-to-software-developers/">Samsung Apps opens home theater devices to software developers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 06 Jan 2010 17:25:00 EST.
