During a recent earnings call, Ubisoft CEO and co-founder Yves Guillemot announced that the publisher is working on five games for Microsoft's next Xbox console, according to Game Informer. Three of the five titles are Watch Dogs: Legion, Gods & Monsters and Rainbow Six: Quarantine, which will be released both on the current Xbox One and the upcoming Xbox, which is codenamed Scarlett. The Scarlett versions of the games will presumably feature faster frame rates and improved graphics. The other two games have yet to be announced.

Sony skipped E3 this year, and my gosh Microsoft made the most of it. The company used its Xbox briefing to tease Project Scarlett, a powerful new console due "holiday 2020," and the introduction of Project xCloud, a long-awaited game streaming service that launches in October. We also got some glorious trailers for Halo Infinite, Gears 5, an all-new Flight Simulator (it's back!), a Lego-centric update for Forza Horizon 4, and the much-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077, complete with Keanu Reeves cameo appearance. Oh, and Microsoft bought Double Fine, the formerly independent studio behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. If you missed the presentation, fear not -- our supercut will bring you up to speed.

Microsoft's 'Project Scarlett' Xbox arrives holiday 2020

Microsoft is following through on its teaser for next-gen Xbox details, and it's clear the company is ready to take the PlayStation 5 head-on. The new system, nicknamed Project Scarlett, will use a custom variant of AMD's Zen 2 processor architecture with GDDR6 memory, with enough processing and graphics power to handle 8K (presumably not for most, if any, games), real-time ray tracing and 120 frames per second performance. It'll also try to stamp out loading times with SSD storage that can serve as virtual memory.

Microsoft teases next-gen Xbox news at E3 event

Many have suspected that Microsoft would talk about its next Xbox at its E3 event, and that now appears to be virtually guaranteed. Gamers have discovered that Microsoft's E3 countdown videos have included background references to "R255 G36 B0," or the RGB code for scarlet -- you know, the widely reported nickname (minus a T) for the 2020 Xbox hardware. The company even confirmed one user's "eagle eye," sending them a month of Xbox Game Pass as a reward.

GameStop cuts costs to deal with plunge in console sales

The PS4 and Xbox One are clearly approaching the end of their main lifecycles, and that's doing serious damage to GameStop's bottom line. The video game store's Q1 profits fell to $6.8 million, just a quarter of what they were a year earlier, based on a steep 35 percent drop in new hardware sales. And that's after accounting for the Nintendo Switch's strong performance. While GameStop didn't explain the decline, gamers knew the next PlayStation and Xbox "Scarlett" were on the horizon -- there wasn't much point to buying a current-gen system. The much gentler dip in software sales (4.3 percent) reinforced this.

Xbox fans now have a particularly big date to mark on their calendars. Microsoft has announced that its E3 briefing will take place on June 9th at 4PM Eastern, complete with an option to watch at home through Mixer. The company unsurprisingly isn't saying exactly what it will show, but it is promising its "biggest" E3 presence to date -- a sharp contrast with Sony, which is skipping E3 and instead decided to spill the beans on the PS5 through an interview.

Microsoft's next Xbox will reportedly launch in 2020

Microsoft was quick to acknowledge that it was designing new Xbox hardware at its E3 presentation, but when will you see that hardware? It might be sooner than you think. Thurrott sources have claimed that the next-gen Xbox, nicknamed Scarlett, should launch sometime in 2020 (if history is any indication, likely November). There are no technical details, but it's described as a "family of devices." Like the Xbox One, then, you can expect to see derivatives.

  • Red claims Dragon is 'single most significant sensor in the history of image capture'

Red Camera's bombastic CEO, Jim Jannard, says that internal testing of the new 6K Dragon sensor proves that it's the new "resolution and dynamic range king." He also claims it will be "the cleanest sensor you have ever seen, ISO 2000 looks better than MX [the current sensor] at ISO 800." The imaging chip was first outed at NAB in April, promising 15+ stops of DR and 120fps at a full 5K of resolution, with $6,000 upgrades for Epic customers by the end of the year. Owners of the $9,700 (brain only) Scarlet-X will also get the Dragon, though no price or date has been given yet for that camera. Needless to say, some independent testing will be needed to substantiate his claims, but Jannard sure does sound confident.

  • Become Death's daughter in Venetica: new PC, Xbox 360 RPG

When it comes to video games, dealing with Death just comes with the territory, but while we're used to seeing him on a pale horse and lining Piers Anthony's pockets with gold, we're less informed about the old guy's family tree. Nevertheless, one thing we now know, if developer Deck 13 is to be believed, is that the immortality incarnate had a daughter named Scarlett, with the German dev casting her as the central character in Venetica, an upcoming RPG for the Xbox 360 and PC.Publisher dtp describes the game's story as "cryptic" with a sixteenth century-style open world that "mixes emotions and action." However, like Scarlett, who apparently knows nothing of her lineage and hidden powers, we too are left guessing regarding most of Venetica's details. Still, the initial batch of screens and a teaser website have made this one look original enough to watch out for in 2009.

  • LG pushes Scarlet LCD HDTVs with completely unrelated commercial

Some of you keen readers pieced all this together already, but that commercial you've been seeing about an "all new television series" dubbed Scarlet isn't a new show at all; rather, it's a risky move by LG to push its Scarlet LCD HDTVs. The sets themselves have been out and about already, and while the specifications aren't anything to sneeze at, the displays aren't nearly as seductive as the 30 second spot. The idea was crafted and put into motion by LG global brand marketing VP Kwan-Sup Lee and a team of advertising / marketing agencies, and while it refused to disclose exactly how much it has spent on the endeavor, it did affirm that it was "millions more than a typical product launch in the US." Sure, we can appreciate the envelope pushing, but now that we're all psyched about the show, it's a bit of a letdown to know we'll never actually be able to tune in. Check out the ad in its entirety after the jump.

Just in case those wood-framed Xcanvas LCD TVs weren't exactly your style, LG is hoping to please you still with a new line that looks a touch more traditional. The so-called Scarlett series spans from 32- to 52-inches in size, with all but the smallest sporting a Full 1080p resolution. Each set comes doused in black with dark red accents and features "invisible" speakers, a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, HDMI 1.3 and a 4-millisecond response time. Granted, these suckas don't exactly check in cheap, as you'll be looking at 1.45 million won ($1,534) for the 32-incher and a staggering 5 million won ($5,290) for the 52-inch 52LG60FD.
