Charlotte Motor Speedway and Panasonic held an event yesterday to celebrate the completion of the new world's largest HD screen, which measures at 16,000 square feet (200 feet wide and 80 feet tall). Of course, the only natural thing to do when face with a screen this size is to play videogames on it, and CMS got very meta by bringing out NASCAR driver and simulation racing fan Dale Earnhardt Jr. to turn a few laps on the track in iRacing on the brand new display. The 720p display, located on the backstretch, is big enough for fans seated along the front stretch of the track between turn four and turn one to have a clear view of replays, standings and stats all the way across the track. Its official debut will take place May 21st during the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and will also take a turn as a massive HDTV airing clips of Top Gear USA during a History Channel sponsored race the week after. You can see the videogame rig, screen and ceremonial oversized remote above while video of them actually playing is available at the source link.
Answering the question of what to do with its massive high definition display, the Charlotte Motor Speedway has teamed up with the History Channel to sponsor its first NASCAR Nationwide race on the schedule, now dubbed the Top Gear 300. During the race, clips from the upcoming second season will play on the 200 foot wide display, although we doubt even that could bring it up to par with the UK version. Still, we'll see what the new season of Top Gear USA has in store, and what it's like to see such a massive screen at a racetrack May 28th.
Charlotte Motor Speedway and its huge HD screen will host the Top Gear 300 in May originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 14:54:00 EST. It's been a bad week for Jerry Jones. Not only are the Cowboys 0-2, but Panasonic and Charlotte Motor Speedway have announced plans to take away his record for the largest HD video screen anywhere. Scheduled to debut in May 2011, the 720p, 16,000 sq ft (200 feet wide, 80 feet tall, 165,000 lbs, more specs are in the press release after the break) LED video wall will be installed along the backstretch between turns 2 and 3 at the race track allowing fans seated on the frontstretch to still see drivers shake and bake all the way around the track. A quick perusal of Wikipedia's list of top videoboards reminds of former contenders for the title -- massive screens at stadiums hosting the Kansas City Royals, Tokyo horse racing, Longhorns football and Miami Dolphins will all drop one more notch on the list.
Continue reading Panasonic, Charlotte Motor Speedway team up for the biggest HD screen ever

Panasonic, Charlotte Motor Speedway team up for the biggest HD screen ever originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 18:27:00 EST. Mitsubishi, mostly seen in this space with displays for your living room, has finally got some recognition for its display that could be your living room (a subtle yet important distinction). Yes, that's right: the Guinness folks are presenting the scoreboard at Cowboys Stadium with the coveted World's Largest High-Definition Video Display award. Consisting of four Diamond Vision LED video screens (the two main displays measure 72 feet high by 160 feet wide while the end-zone displays are 29 feet high by 51 feet wide), this bad boy is suspended 90 feet above the center of the playing surface and might prove something of a "punt magnet." To celebrate, the Engadget editors are going to take another stab at the Publication With The Most Editors Sporting Beards Made Of Bees award. Huffington Post, it's on!
Four-Sided, High-Definition Screen Equivalent of 3,268 TVs Hangs Above Cowboys Stadium Playing Field

CYPRESS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mitsubishi Electric gained yet another entry in the Guinness World Records book with the recognition of its revolutionary Diamond Vision video boards at Cowboys Stadium as the World's Largest High-Definition Video Display. The official certificate presentation will take place during a pre-game ceremony on September 28, just prior to the Cowboys vs. Carolina Panthers Monday Night Football game, which will be aired nationally on ESPN.

The world's first four-sided, center-hung, high-definition video display in a stadium consists of four Diamond Vision(R) LED video screens, with the two main sideline displays measuring 72 feet high by 160 feet wide, and two Diamond Vision(R) end-zone displays measuring 29 feet high by 51 feet wide. Weighing 600 tons, the screens are suspended 90 feet directly over the center of the playing surface and stretch from nearly one 20-yard line to the other.

With a total viewing area of 11,393 square-feet, the Diamond Vision(R) display is equal to 3,268 52-inch televisions, and has 10,584,064 LED lights.

"This was probably the most exciting project we've ever been involved with," said Mark Foster, general manager of Mitsubishi Electric's Diamond Vision Systems. "The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most innovative teams in the NFL, and their new stadium reflects that. These scoreboards and displays are the realization of the Cowboys' commitment to their fans and the sport. We are very proud that the Cowboys organization turned to Mitsubishi Electric to deliver their vision as part of this incredible project."

"We're extremely proud of our world-class Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision screen," said Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones. "We have designed everything about Cowboys Stadium to provide an unequalled experience for our fans, and this screen is the centerpiece of what we have created for them."

Mitsubishi Electric has now been recognized by Guinness World Records five times for its accomplishments, and the Cowboys' board is the fourth Diamond Vision screen to be honored by Guinness. The first came in August 2003, for the World's Longest Video Display for the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong which was installed in August 2003. In March 2005, GWR recognized the Diamond Vision(R) LED display at Turner Field in Atlanta as the World's Largest High-Definition Television Screen, and in September 2005 the Mitsubishi Electric video board at the Japan Racing Association Tokyo Racecourse was certified as the World's Largest Television Display. In 1993, Mitsubishi Electric was recognized for designing and installing the World's Fastest Elevator - capable of traveling 750 meters per minute (approximately 28 miles per hour) - at the Landmark Tower in Yokohama, Japan.

Just in time to remind us that immense LED HDTV screens aren't only in Texas, Mitsubishi has announced it's installation of (the likely less-problematic) Turf Vision 1 & 2 at Nakayama Racecourse. At around 4,000 square feet, the larger Turf Vision 1 isn't quite as daunting as the pair of screens hung at Cowboy Stadium or as long as previous world beater still residing at Tokyo Racecourse, but as you can see from the pictures, what other screen would be right to view footage beamed from that track to this one? These screens go live September 12,we'll save a few betting slips for you.
Continue reading Mitsubishi unveils latest Diamond Vision LED HD screens at Nakayama Racecourse

Mitsubishi unveils latest Diamond Vision LED HD screens at Nakayama Racecourse originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 23:38:00 EST. It's not necessarily on the level of Yankee Stadium's jetstream, but the new Dallas Cowboys stadium has its own problems. The massive HDTV strung up over the field was hit by a punt during the first NFL game played there last night. So far, by the rules that will result in a do-over, while owner Jerry Jones says there are no plans to move the screen and he doubts anyone will hit it during the regular season. Check the video evidence embedded after the break, somehow we doubt this is the last time this happens.
Continue reading Dallas Cowboys HD scoreboard hanging too low?

Dallas Cowboys HD scoreboard hanging too low? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 22 Aug 2009 21:50:00 EST. It should be no wonder Mark Cuban (got some Jerry Jones envy?) is promising the first NHL & NBA arena with 1080-line digital scoreboards. While 1080p has been well entrenched in scoreboards for the outdoor sports (like the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees) it appears the winter brethren has been slacking, but with the Mavericks and Stars not competing in tonight's finals action, plans to upgrade American Airlines Center ahead of the 2009-10 seasons are already underway, with four 18- by 30-foot video scoreboards coming to the center display and two 24- by 72-foot video walls at the north and south ends. If that's not enough, the sounds are getting a makeover too, with a "state-of-the-art concert quality sound system" bring a digital six speaker linear system to next years attendees, though we should all get a (3D?) look during the 2010 NBA All-Star Game next February.

[Via Dallas Observer & Mark Cuban]

Mark Cuban promises the first 1080 NHL & NBA arena next season originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 21:16:00 EST. Say hello to the Yankee's biggest and, in our opinion, best new acquisition. We've been all up and down the specs of the Mitsubishi built 101- by 59-foot LED display for the last year so we'll just sit back and let it wash over you, while we contemplate whether those luxury seats below block some of the bleacher seats, or the ant-sized players trotting around on the field below.

Gallery: Yankee Stadium

Yankees new Diamond Vision HD scoreboard unveiled originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 04 Apr 2009 12:22:00 EST. Daktronics has made a name outfitting stadiums across the country with high definition scoreboards and the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati is no different. Reds fans can look forward to a 138 by 39 foot high main scoreboard, plus two other displays behind left field, and the first use of Daktronics' HD-16 LED technology for a higher res ribbon board along the first and third base lines. Sony's jumped in the game, outfitting the stadium with top notch broadcast and production equipment, plus our favorite feature, as the stadium's 64 luxury suites feature 46-inch BRAVIA HDTVs and Vaio PCs running StadiumView software, which lets fans choose which HD feed to watch via touchscreen.

Gallery: Cincinnati Reds Great American Ballpark Daktronics LED HD Scoreboard

Read - Cincinnati Reds Stadium Gets High-Definition Video Upgrade From Sony and Daktronics
Read - Cincinnati Reds Team with Daktronics and Sony to Upgrade Video System at Great American Ballpar
Filed under: Misc, Displays

Daktronics & Sony bring HD to Cincinnati Reds home ballpark originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 06:55:00 EST. The New York Yankees annual team workout is April 2, and that's when the organization officially takes the wraps off its 101- by 59-foot HD Diamond Vision scoreboard. Mitsubishi's screen can show 5,925 sq ft of HD and give either one large 1080 image or up to four simultaneously. An 8mm dot pitch means we wouldn't put our noses against it, but from anywhere else in the ballpark the view should be perfect. Congratulations New York, instead of just Mets vs. Yankees beef, this year you'll be tied up in the Mitsubishi vs. Daktronics debate.

Yankee Stadium -- and its enormous HD screen -- opens to the fans Thursday originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 05:13:00 EST. It's still up in the air whether the New York Mets will have a solid 2009 season, but one thing is for certain: locals are stoked to see Citi Field open up on April 13th. Sharp has just pushed out a press release that gives baseball loving HD junkies even more reason to go check out a game in person, as we're told that over 800 AQUOS HDTVs will be littered about the new venue. There will also be a gigantic 108-inch Sharp LCD in Citi Field's main lobby, which ought to complement the 12,000 square-feet of Daktronics HD signage quite well. Man, stuff like this really makes us rethink the whole "stay home vs. see it live" debate. Full release is after the break.
Continue reading New York Mets' Citi Field set to be loaded with AQUOS HDTVs

Filed under: Displays, Sharp, LCD, Sports

New York Mets' Citi Field set to be loaded with AQUOS HDTVs originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 17:33:00 EST. Yeah, one of those things is coming to Target Field in 2010. Said ballpark is slated to open in under two years in downtown Minneapolis, and Daktronics will be installing a 101- x 57-foot high-def scoreboard (the fourth largest in MLB) that can be "operated as a single giant display or be divided into multiple zones." If you'll recall, this isn't the first gigantic HD scoreboard to be ordered up by a Minnesota-based team, but this particular deal also includes a variety of ribbon boards and a sophisticated out-of-town scoreboard in right-center field that measures 109- x 12-feet. So, any Twins fans jazzed to see their club at the new park? Or are you really just jazzed about the new 'boards?

[Thanks, Andrew]

Daktronics HD-X LED scoreboard coming to Twins' Target Field originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Oct 2008 17:33:00 EST. The dream may be over this year for the Milwaukee Brewers, but that doesn't mean fans can't begin thinking about next year. As the remaining MLB clubs fight it out for baseball's greatest prize, Miller Park is getting set to get a new coat of grass this off-season. Additionally, the park will get fitted with a brand new HD scoreboard, and while specifications were sadly absent, it will be installed and ready to wow by Opening Day 2010.

Brewers' Miller Park getting HD scoreboard for 2010 Opening Day originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Oct 2008 22:44:00 EST. For fans of the Montreal Canadiens, they'll be enjoying the live action more than most thanks to a 50,000-pound scoreboard that's lighting up the Bell Centre this year. The board, which stands in at 25-feet high and 40-feet wide, sports an undisclosed HD resolution and is (of course) 2.5 times larger than the one recently purchased by the rival Maple Leafs for the Air Canada Centre. So yeah, now it's not just about the score, it's about the board the score is on.

[Thanks, Bruno]

Montreal Canadiens light up 25- x 40-foot HD scoreboard originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Oct 2008 09:24:00 EST. Daktronics has continued to outdo itself again and again since first coming on our radar with its massive Dolphin Stadium high definition scoreboard two years ago, but the company plans to make the New Meadowlands project, opening for the Giants and Jets in 2010, its biggest yet. The $45 million project includes four 103- by 30-foot screens at each corner of the stadium, ensuring Eli Manning can always see his open receivers even while spinning free of numerous would-be tacklers to throw a miracle pass that screws up our sure thing bet...but we digress. The four big screens, plus 28 other large screen displays located around the stadium use the LED-based HD-X technology already in use at other stadiums ensuring high contrast and wide viewing angles, although with that many it's probably not necessary. After the Yankees, Mets and now both football teams we suppose the Nets are just waiting to secure Lebron in '10 before announcing the court will be replaced with an HDTV.

New Meadowlands Stadium features four 103- by 30-foot HD screens originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 26 Jul 2008 00:54:00 EST. Mississippi State can be proud of more than reigning SEC Coach of the Year Sylvester Croom, with a biggest-in-the-SEC (but not as big as Texas) $6.1 million HD video board under construction for its debut October 2008. Nestled in the south end zone of Scott Field the total board measures 152 feet wide x 135.5 feet tall, with a main high definition screen of 111 feet by 47 feet. Packing the usual LED technology, it can split up to show multiple displays and stats as we expect from our scoreboards, and has size that compares nicely with HDTV displays on the way in Minnesota and Arizona. Congratulations Bulldogs, you've got a team able to compete in a tough conference, and now some stadium amenities that are able to measure up as well.

[Via Busted Coverage]

Mississippi State plans biggest HD scoreboard in the SEC this fall originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 06 Jul 2008 13:38:00 EST. It's been far too long since we heard about the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium w/ accompanying gigantic four-sided HD scoreboard (and far too long before the 2009 season when it opens). Mitsubishi apparently thinks its the one to drop in new details, since it's their Diamond Vision technology (also soon to be seen at the new Yankee Stadium) powering the worlds largest 1080p LED displays, and we're in no position to argue. What can we say, exact specs on HD screens totaling nearly 13,000 sq ft make us weak. Check after the break for the full details before they're scheduled to turn on June 1, 2009.
Continue reading Full specs on the Dallas Cowboys world's largest 1080p LED scoreboards

Full specs on the Dallas Cowboys world's largest 1080p LED scoreboards originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Apr 2008 10:44:00 EST. When the New York Yankees kick off their 2009 MLB season next April in the new Yankee Stadium (hopefully without being rained out Opening Day), they'll do it under a Mitsubishi Diamond Vision high definition video scoreboard. In what it's calling the first HD display in MLB to use its high-density AVL-ODQ8 LED display technology, Mitsubishi is upgrading the Diamond Vision board at the current Yankee Stadium, to a 5,925 square-foot 1080x1920 display measuring 100.79 feet wide and 58.79 feet tall. Sure the Royals might have a few more feet of HD, and the Mets have plenty of HD too, but we think Yankees fans won't have a problem with the team's latest high priced signing.

101- by 59-foot HD scoreboard coming to the new Yankee Stadium originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 10:12:00 EST. The University of Minnesota has finally found a way to one-up OSU and the other U of M's football squads by ordering up the first Daktronics HD-16 scoreboard in the Big Ten (Will you be able to watch the Big Ten Network on it?). Second-largest in college football to Texas' Godzillatron, the 108- by 48-foot display takes advantage of all the company's latest technologies, and should be ready for Minnesota's home opener against Air Force in 2009. Some fans may wonder how the big screen will make the football team better, but if top-notch facilities help recruit the next Marion Barber III-Laurence Maroney connection then it should be well worth it.

University of Minnesota orders up 108- by 48-foot HD scoreboard from Daktronics originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 14:22:00 EST. Apparently eschewing the bigger/biggest race for a moment, no word on the size of a specific Godzillatron display, but Mets fans can expect 12,000 total square footage of display technology when installation is completed by August, ahead of the stadium's inaugural 2009 season. The main displays feature Daktronics' HD-X technology and will ensure that the best place to watch the game on TV is at the park itself. In other news about 'dat 'tronics, Bloomberg profiles the company's work on the Cowboys' enormous screen, and more than 18,000 sq ft of displays going into the new Giants-Jets stadium.

Update: The Mets also just acquired Johan Santana, so Mets fans can rest assured the next time their team is busy blowing the pennant race, they'll be doing it in a top quality ballpark with one of the game's best pitchers on the mound.

Read - Daktronics to provide 12,000 square feet of integrated scoring and video display technology at Citi Field
Read - Giants, Cowboys Pack Screens Into Stadiums for `Wow,' Revenue
Filed under: Displays, Sports

Daktronics plans 12000-square feet of HD signage for Citi Field originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 18:22:00 EST. Sure, you've got a few wireless scoreboard options out there if you're not down with keeping tabs via your PC / handset, but for fans of MLB and fashion alike, Ambient Devices' Baseball ScoreCast really is in a league of its own. As with the firm's Market Maven, this device also relies on the InfoCast Network for updates, meaning that it doesn't require nearby WiFi to function. 'Course, InfoCast can reach "only" 90-percent of the US, but if you're blanketed, all you'll need to provide is four AA cells and input on which team is your favorite. The device receives data updates every half-inning, and if nine just isn't enough, you'll also be kept current with extra inning action. Of course, whether such a unit is worth $124.99 is another matter entirely.

Boy, all these new high-def scoreboards is a trend we can really dig. Next up on the construction list is Camden Yards with their $9 million AV upgrades including a new sound system, control room, upgrades on the ribbon scoreboards and of course, the 16x9 HD screen. The ribbon cutting is expected in time for the '08 Oriole's season and reportedly, right before the 15-year-old Sony JumboTron (pictured) losses its last leg -- and last replacement part. Right now, it seems stadiums aren't concerned about sheer size anymore -- by our records, a Tokyo racetrack still holds the size title at 221-feet diagonal -- but keeping up with the Joneses and simply have a high-def scoreboard to call their own.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards to get HD scoreboard originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 09:15:00 EST. We're a bit perplexed as to why the Kansas City Royals are becoming the next baseball team to get a substantial stadium makeover -- considering the team's record over the past few years and all -- but hey, we can't complain about "the world's largest HD LED scoreboard," now can we? Along with the giant board in center field, the stadium will also receive a myriad Daktronics displays along "the fascia of the upper deck along right and left field," and two ribbon boards (each 380-feet in length) will be "positioned in the outfield above the new restaurant / bar and Hall of Fame." All told, $250 million will be spent sprucing up the ballpark, and while fans will be seeing that 100- x 85-foot HD scoreboard next season, the entire project should be completed by 2009.

Read - Kauffman Stadium getting $250 million renovation
Read - World's largest HD LED display

Royals' HD scoreboard to one-up 'Godzillatron' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Oct 2007 17:45:00 EST. Quite frankly, it seems that each professional sports team that installs a fancy new HD scoreboard immediately assumes that it's the world's largest, and this go 'round, it's the Kansas City Royals keeping the trend alive. During the 2008 MLB season, Royals fans can feast their eyes on a 100- by 85-foot Daktronics display that utilizes HD-X LED technology, which the ball club says is "the largest HD LED board in the world." Additionally, Kauffman Stadium will be receiving a number of other Daktronics-sourced upgrades in 2009 / 2010, including an outfield fence display that measures around 8- by 128-feet, a pair of "ribbon boards" measuring in at 4- x 380-feet, and two displays above the stadium's new Hall of Fame that each span 5- by 108-feet. Now, if the Royals themselves prove to be worth watching, taking in a game next season may not be such a bad idea.

Kansas City Royals to get 'world's largest' HD LED scoreboard originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 22:17:00 EST. Mitsubishi Electric and ANC Sports Enterprises teamed up to install the four center hung, 25-foot by 14-foot Diamond Vision systems at the home of the Washington Capitals, along with over 1,000 linear feet of LED fascia to display scrolling info. At only 1,280 by 736 pixels, none of these screens is going to make the most out of your favorite Blu-ray flick, but they do make the arena a perfect venue for your next LAN party.

[Photo courtesy of Flickr member Jessfir]

Verizon Center shows off "first true indoor HD LED scoreboard" originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 Sep 2007 07:02:00 EST. Sure, baseball season is far from over, but here in the US of A, the onset of September directs all eyes to one sport. Thankfully, the SportsCast Wireless Football Scoreboard has made a timely entrance onto the scene, allowing NFL fans everywhere to see updates of scores across the league. The device requires no subscription to operate, and enables you to choose a "feature game" to highlight while the matches of lesser importance are shown below. Interestingly, the unit claims to receive updates every 15 minutes "via satellite signal (Ambient?)," and also sports a clock that sets itself. Sadly, the $99 wireless scoreboard won't be shipping out to pigskin fans for another month, so you'll have to keep track of the first few weeks the old fashioned way.

[Via CNET]
Filed under: Misc. Vroop's Liveboard won't win any awards for "world's largest" or anything, but if you're looking for an easier (and more decorative) way to keep a close eye on baseball scores around the league, you'd be hard pressed to top this. Designed after a timeless stadium scoreboard, this device sports built-in wireless capabilities that enable it to sync up with the included software in order to keep track and display real-time scores in MLB. Users can select from a trio of modes depending on what scores they'd like to see, and you'll even find a wireless USB adapter thrown in for good measure. Of course, those not interested in America's pastime may find the $299 pricetag a bit baffling, but for those sick of waiting for a ticker to reveal the home team's current status, this fee is completely justified.

[Via Coolest-Gadgets]
Filed under: Misc. They're still sweet. Next up is San Fransisco Giants and their 3 million dollar 31 1/2 feet high by 103 feet wide screen made by Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision - same peeps that did up the HD screen at that horse track in Japan BTW. Plus, in good 'ol San Fransisco style, this scoreboard is comprised of 3 million low power LEDs and the stadium's power consumption is supplemented by hundreds of solar panels. There are hundreds of flat panels scattered around the park, plus more are going in the dugout seating section making this one high-def loving stadium.

Giants show off eco-friendly HD mega-scoreboard originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 26 Mar 2007 16:10:00 EST. If there were ever any doubts that they do things bigger in Texas, let them be dispelled here and now: the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium -- whose plans were unveiled at a star-studded event in Arlington last night -- is nothing less than a marvel of modern engineering. Not only will it be the biggest domed stadium in the world upon its completion in 2009, it will also hold the title of world's largest column-free room, and house what officials are dubbing the biggest center-hung video board on the planet. Clearly not content with having just one ginormous screen, however, the Cowboys opted for a four-display setup, with the endzone-facing panels measuring in at 48 feet by 27 feet and the sideline-facing monoliths dwarfing all those which came before it at an incredible 180 feet wide by 50 feet high. That translates to exactly 9,000 square feet of video real estate per display, with a 2,241-inch diagonal. To put these monsters in perspective, the scoreboard at Dolphin Stadium and "Godzillatron" at Royal-Memorial Stadium only rock 6,850 square foot and 7,370 square foot areas, respectively; even the mighty HDTV recently installed at the Tokyo Racetrack can only boast a square footage of about 8,066. Some fans are already complaining about skyrocketing ticket prices to pay for the billion-dollar stadium (only $325 million of that will be publicly financed), but when you're talking about Texas, where football is king, it seems completely appropriate that "America's Team" should have a suitable castle to hold court in.

Read- Official site
Read- Stadium stats
[Thanks, Brian]

Cowboys' new stadium to get over 20,000 square feet of video screen originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 13 Dec 2006 10:20:00 EST. Not to be outdone by the giant scoreboard displays at Dolphin stadium and the University of Texas at Austin, Dallas' Cotton Bowl has contracted with Daktronics to design and build a new mega-HDTV when $50M in renovations are done to the stadium in the next few years. The renovations include increasing capacity and adding amenities to the stadium that was built in 1929 and hosts the Cotton Bowl college football bowl game and the yearly Red River Shootout between 2005 college champion UT Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners [For shame, thanks Righo for correcting me on the school's name, I should know these things living in Dallas]. The manufacturer will also be installing a new LED-based display and accompanying sound system. The scoreboard / video combination will display a 1280x720 resolution spread out over 3,900 square feet (83 x 47 feet, or 25 by 14 meters).
Dallas' Cotton Bowl joins exclusive club with mega-HDTV scoreboard originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 18 Aug 2006 17:20:00 EST. It was good while it lasted Miami. Daktronics, the same company who built the Dolphin Stadium twin-monster HDTVs has been contracted by the University of Texas to make one even bigger. As a part of renovations to their south end zone they are installing a 134x55-foot scoreboard, 370 square feet bigger than Miami's. As Engadget points out, it's actually slightly narrower and a little taller, bringing some conflict to the question of who is the biggest. All the same, if you want to check it out while everything is still bigger in Texas, you better hurry as a horse track in Tokyo is installing a 197-foot wide display.

If they had announced this last year, maybe Vince Young would have returned to lead them to another National Championship.

[Thanks for the tip Scott M!]
Texas Longhorns prepare to steal biggest HDTV crown originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 10 May 2006 12:44:00 EST. At 7,370 square feet, the 134-foot by 55-foot 'board being built for the school by Daktronics (who also manufactured the Miami display) has a slightly larger screen area than the current 7000-sqaure-foot title-holder, but nitpickers may argue that since the UT model will be almost a foot shorter diagonally, that it doesn't qualify as the "world's biggest." The argument may turn out to be moot, though, as a horse track in Tokyo is supposedly planning to install a ridiculous 197-foot-wide monster of a screen later this year that will overshadow all who came before it. UT's project comes as part of a multi-million dollar overhaul of their stadium, which will also include several other large displays, a new sound system, and a $150 million renovation of the north end zone meant to enable a 90,000 person capacity.

[Thanks, Brian]

Longhorns to snatch "world's biggest HD display" title from Dolphins? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 10 May 2006 11:27:00 EST.
