Sega Rally Online Arcade has made the trip from ratings board to release calendar in record time -- it's coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in 2011. According to the official announcement, Sega Rally Online Arcade is a new game "inspired" by Sega Rally Revo (2007) and the arcade-only Sega Rally 3, both of which were developed by Sega Racing Studio. As the title subtly implies, online rally racing is a given. Other features, which couldn't be incorporated into the logo with any elegance whatsoever, include the 13 rally cars, Championship Battle and Time Attack modes, leaderboards and "a brand new achievement system." While you hurriedly type "Game Over YEAAAAAH" into the comments section, we'll keep an eye out for a more specific launch window.%Gallery-115411%

  • Codemasters takes over Sega Racing Studio

After turning its back on its Sega Racing Studio, Sega has handed the British developer over to Codemasters, which will integrate the company into its existing Codemasters Studios. Sega cut the studio loose earlier this month following lackluster sales of Sega Rally Revo, the developer's one and only release. Codemasters, however, see the studio as a worthwhile addition to bolster its ongoing development of racing games by bringing on more than 40 new employees with at least one published racer to their credit. However, it looks like Codies' may be returning for seconds, and after the dust settles there may be more acquisitions in the company's future. As chief exec Rod Cousens puts it, "there will be more to come as we are not content to stand still."

  • Sega Racing Studio closed, not profitable

Sega has confirmed closure of its Sega Racing Studio, which, despite ballooning to more than 60 employees, has managed only a single release since its creation in 2005. One, and done. "The decision is part of a review of Sega's Western Development Studios to ensure that each studio is a profitable entity in its own right, and unfortunately the Sega Racing Studio's 5 year plan would not result in a successful return for the Sega business moving forward," Sega explained to Next-Gen. Poor sales of last year's Sega Rally Revo likely encouraged the decision to shut down Sega Racing Studio "immediately," bringing an indefinite halt to purported projects currently in development. Sega has not made public the ultimate fates of the staff members, who include a diverse array of veteran talent, headed by former Colin McRae Rally series producer Guy Wilday, but did add, "Sega would like to stress that there will be no changes within their other internal development studios."Read - Initial report (Develop)Read - Sega's explanation (Next-Gen)

Speaking to Eurogamer, Guy Wilday, the head of SEGA Racing Studio, claimed that he'd like to see a pre-release demo of their upcoming title, SEGA Rally Revo, which is set to debut in September. Wilday noted that the team will "look to do potentially 360 and PS3 downloadable demos before release." Not exactly the most concrete of promises, but we'll take what we can get. Wilday further comments that the challenge of creating demos comes from balancing how much of the game one is allowed to play. As Wilday puts it, "We want people to get the experience of the game without giving the game away." Whatever the team decides to do, finishing touches are still being put on the game proper, so the demo will have to wait. With two major racing titles -- Forza 2 and DiRT -- just released for the 360, are you considering SEGA Rally Revo?
