It is after midnight on Dec. 7, 2010, and that can only mean one thing: Cataclysm is live in the United States! Except ... um, it's not. At least, not everywhere, and not on every server. There are currently widespread reports of servers not being "turned on" to Cataclysm yet (with level 80 characters still unable to earn experience, for example) and further reports of people being unable to even log in. Experiences seem to vary from server to server, so don't panic if you're not able to log in. You're not alone, and the problem's not on your end. We'll provide updates here and provide you with news as it develops. Update (12:30 a.m. PST): It appears that XP gains have now been turned on. Happy leveling! Update (12:54 a.m. PST): Blue poster Bashiok has confirmed on the official forums that XP gains are on universally, so long as you read "not" as "now." The official Blizzard customer service Twitter account says XP gains are active as well. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has destroyed Azeroth as we know it; nothing is the same! In WoW Insider's Guide to Cataclysm, you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion, from brand new races to revamped quests and zones. Maintenance, you say? Unheard of! After all, what is wrong with a Paladin standing upright while riding her horse? Or what's wrong with constant errors telling intrepid adventurers additional instances cannot be launched?Well, okay. Something might be wrong with those things. Hopefully tomorrow's maintenance will bring fixes to them. But more importantly based on all account it'll be bringing patch 3.1.3 with it as well.Maintenance will last from 3:00 a.m. PDT until 11:00 a.m. PDT. Unless, of course, you on one of the few dozen realms listed after the break. For those special realms, maintenance will last from 12:01 a.m. PDT until 12:01 p.m. PDT. Why is it starting at the :01? Because Blizzard wants you to have an extra minute to complete raids tonight. That's how much they care. And you know what? So do I... (Click it... I dare you.)The full list of realms under the extended maintenance after the break.

The opening announcement in-game tells us that there will be maintenance tomorrow from 3:00 a.m. PDT / 6:00 a.m. EDT until 11:00 a.m. PDT / 2:00 p.m. EDT. Hopefully this downtime won't be a repeat of the patch 3.1 downtime we saw last week where the servers were offline for most of the day and evening. There is a lot of recent announcements about events happening in the game in the near future. There will be a talent reset accompanying a client-side patch soon, a long list of in-game fixes, and the likely start of season six.If there is a patch tomorrow, we'll keep you updated on the site with the latest.

  • Connection problems strike WoW

There appears to be connection problems going around as multiple people are unable to log in tonight, including multiple tipsters and yours truly. It's definitely a widespread problem, as the Blizzard Tech Support team is currently asking for ISP and tracert information over on the official forums while they try to track it down. While some people are positing that this is a merged battle.net account problem, it's worth noting that we also know of many people, including a couple of our bloggers, are still able to log in fine with a battle.net account. At the same time, some posters in the aforementioned thread are saying that they can log on fine when they use an unmerged pre-battle.net account from a family member or roommate.Once we get a clearer idea of what the problem is or when it's been fixed, we'll let you know.UPDATE, 10:30 PM EST: Okay, This is Daniel again, and I can log on with a battle.net account. This is the same one that wasn't working not 10 minutes ago, for the record.UPDATE, 11 PM EST: It looks everything is working fine again. Play on!

  • Friday night authentication server trouble [UPDATED x2]

The login server has announced that Blizzard is aware of some authentication server problems going around tonight. It didn't seem very widespread when the notice first went up, but we've been gradually getting more reports of it as the night has gone on.Oddly, I was able to log into WoW when the notice was first posted, but I can't anymore. I wasn't doing anything important, so I decided to check it out and sure thing, it was time for a ride on the failboat. I'm also stuck on a loading screen while trying to test out the Iron Council on the PTR, so I'm currently riding on a Cruise Failboat. How decadent! If we get any other updates before the authentication server starts working again, we'll be sure to keep you all posted.Edit: Welp, it works again. Go forth and play!Edit: Welp, it (mostly) works again. Go forth and play (some of you)!

  • Authentication, or the lack thereof

About an hour and a half ago I made the mistake of logging out of the game. Now I can't seem to get back in and evidently many people on multiple servers are having the same problem. It's a shame, really, since I was planning another attempt at the heroics, but alas it was not meant to be. My guess is that one of two things could happen. One is that we will be back up and running soon with little problem. The other option, and the far more likely one in my opinion, will be that these problems will keep occurring throughout the night. I am betting that something is happening with the Patch 2.1 install and it is messing authentication up. Nothing official on what is happening, but we do know that all is not well in Azeroth. Until then, I guess it's time to dust off your consoles, read a book, or catch up on all that homework you've been slacking on.
