The eighth anniversary of the launch of Guild Wars is coming at the end of this month, and ArenaNet has announced the planned celebrations to run from April 22 through April 29. Those fans who have been with the game for several years might recognize the familiar Shing Jea Boardwalk and Roller Beetle racing festivities, but don't forget to test out your dodgeball skills in the Dragon Arena and talk to Ceira over at Embark Beach for some goodies. Those characters celebrating eight or more years in the game will be honored with a special in-game gift card that allows them to grab their choice of birthday gift boxes from years past. Of course there's much more to the event than this, and you can read all about it at the official announcement page and look for our own anniversary article celebrating 8 years of Guild Wars coming soon.

It's that special time of year again! Despite the amount of effort that has got to be getting poured into the upcoming Guild Wars 2 beta weekend event, ArenaNet isn't neglecting the baby game's elder sibling. The Guild Wars site has been updated with some information about festivities for the in-game celebration. From April 24th through May 8th, players will be able to enjoy the time-honored traditions of Guild Wars' birthday celebrations: Players can stroll down the Shing Jea Boardwalk for some festival games, race Rollerbeetles, unlock birthday hats, and collect some sweet, sweet treats. In addition, a new pet is being made available. The Hound of Balthazar can be unlocked for free by visiting Ceira, Sworn to Fire in Embark Beach and then traveling to the Zaishen Menagerie and tracking down the fiery beastie. After the anniversary has drawn to a close, the Hound will still be unlockable, but at the cost of 100,000 Balthazar Faction or 20 golden zaishen coins and 100 gold -- so maybe don't dawdle if you're interested in a shiny new pet. The updated page also promises "drops and activities never before seen in anniversary celebration," so join in the fun to find out what's new! [Update: According to a Gamebreaker TV special, all of the normal weekend events observed in Guild Wars will be running simultaneously for the anniversary celebration!]

Token farming, Rollerbeetle racing, and AFK-ing the rings. Hot on the heels of Wintersday Redux comes Canthan New Year 2010. Guild Wars players joke about the AFK-fest, and while it's a great opportunity to work on those lucky and unlucky titles, there is much more going on. ArenaNet puts together a great festival every year, with old favorite quests and NPCs returning to dole out Lunar tokens and Fortunes as well as a heap of other treats. There is a lot going on, and it can be a bit overwhelming if this is your first Canthan New Year, so let's take a peek at the festivities.

Last weekend was not only a time for partying in the real world; it was the Dragon Festival in Guild Wars as well. Players got to compete in mini-games for fun prizes that not only gave permanent costume pieces, but cool temporary effects like the one above. This fantastic Guild Wars One Shots comes to us from Ken Z. who writes in: I thought you might enjoy seeing Shing Jea Monastery from the Boardwalk. This is what happens when you drink a Mysterious Tonic and get lucky. I had my mini kuny out too, it gave it a nice effect. You are looking east from the boardwalk to see the special decorations in a side area of the monastery itself. From little details to big landscapes, we love to see what you're doing in your favorite MMO! But we need you to send in those One Shots screens, so drop them in an email to oneshots AT massively.com along with your name, a brief description, and anything else you'd like to add. We'll post them here for everyone to enjoy and give you the credit!%Gallery-9798%

As Guild Wars approaches its four year anniversary this April 28th, they plan to kick off some birthday festivities a bit early, starting on April 23rd and running through the 29th. The Guild Wars 4 Year Anniversary Celebration will include rewards for long-time players such as miniatures, plus special items tied in with the event and festivities held at the Shing Jea Boardwalk.NCSoft has also mentioned The Zaishen Menagerie, a new Asian-themed area, replete with torii-inspired arches, red bridges, and a picturesque backdrop. NCSoft gives this description of The Zaishen Menagerie: "In a beautiful, lush new explorable area in the Battle Isles, the Zaishen Order runs a tight business breeding and training all the common and prestige pets from around the world for their clientele. There are a few ways you can start your own collection in the Menagerie. Bring any pet with you or your Heroes to the Tamer in the Menagerie Grounds. The Tamer will check your pet's evolution and unlock that tier and any lower tiers. Adding charmed pets to the Menagerie is absolutely free. You can also use Balthazar Faction or pay with Zaishen Coins and gold to have the Zaishen Order unlock and train evolutions of pets for you. This way, you've got several choices for unlocking all your pets."There's also a Pet Unlock Pack that Guild Wars players can buy for $10 which will unlock all common pets in the Menagerie. We've got a video embed of The Zaishen Menagerie preview for you below the cut:
