Sony has revealed the disturbing list of top SingStar tracks downloaded from the SingStore. The Guardian is clearly of the same mindset as us when it speculates that only the impulsive purchases of those coming home after a long night of drinking at the pub can explain this list:10. "American Pie" - Don McLean9. "Baby One More Time" - Britney Spears8. "Take On Me" - A-ha7. "Eye Of The Tiger" - Survivor6. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" - Cyndi Lauper5. "Torn" - Natalie Imbruglia4. "Suspicious Minds" - Elvis Presley3. "Just Like A Pill" - P!nk2. "Final Countdown" - Europe1. "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" - Bonnie TylerSince the launch of the SingStore, four million songs have been purchased from the service. A majority of these tracks are from the '80s, with the artists split across genders. We're just stuck on "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in the top spot -- really!?

Wireless microphones? Yes, they've been a long time coming, but -- at last -- they're almost here. Europe, you'll be able to get your hands on them March 20, though there's no word on price. The mics are compatible with both PS2 and PS3 versions of SingStar and their launch supposedly "coincides with the release of SingStar Pop Edition" -- the same press release says Pop Edition won't be out until April. Go figure. There's also mention of a new control system which will be introduced with Pop Edition. You can now select songs by simply speaking the name into the microphone. You'll never need to touch your Sixaxis again. Check after the break for the full track list.

  • SingStar PS3 backwards compatibility patch available now

A free patch for SingStar PS3, allowing non-backwards compatible PS3s to play PS2 SingStar titles, should be available now in Europe. The download will automatically activate when owners pop in their copy of the game, enabling those karaoke divas to swap PS2 SingStar discs in "for the rest of the session." The game is still technically playing the PS3 version and just pulling the data from the disc, so all DLC should still be available.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Sony has announced (via ThreeSpeech) that the SingStar PS3 backwards compatability patch is on its way very soon. Tomorrow, in fact. The patch, which will allow you to switch between PS3 and PS2 SingStar discs without quitting the game. It's a feature that's been highly anticipated and which was announced at the Leipzig Game Convention this year. The patch will arrive on December 16th at 10am GTM (EST +5) and will be automatically downloaded when you start up the game. Not only will this remove those awkward atmospheric lulls during parties, but it should add My SingStar Online functionality to the entire SingStar back catalog.

  • Sony says 'we're leading in user-generated content'

At least Sony has one thing to smile about this morning. According to Sony's Michael Denny who spoke with Gamesindustry.biz, Sony is leading the charge in user-generated content for home consoles. Denny backs the claim by counting successes for LittleBigPlanet, Buzz! and SingStar. "... SingStar is now an online community of over 300,000 users. With Buzz as well ... there's over 100,000 user-generated quizzes that have had over seven million plays." Denny also noted that LittleBigPlanet has almost 180,000 community created levels having been played for a combined total over 22.4 million times. Denny admits that a strong community backbone in previous hardware generations eased the move to the PS3 for some of these key Sony games -- speaking specifically about Buzz! and SingStar. While LittleBigPlanet hasn't performed in terms of sales as many, including us, would have predicted, it looks like the community response to the original IP has shown a tremendously healthy sign of interest.

  • SingStore finally getting updated, PS2 disc swapping by Xmas

Oh, yeah. SingStar. Looks like SCEA may not have forgotten about that game either. It's easy to lose faith when games like Rock Band, Guitar Hero and even Karaoke Revolution, offer regular updates -- but no new news gets released about Sony's music game. According to a new post on the PlayStation.blog, US fans of the singing game can look forward to over 60 songs to be released over "the next few months." (Not too specific, we know.) Hopefully, this is a sign that regular content will start hitting the SingStore. You can only sing Buddy Holly for so long before you want some new music to play with.In other SingStar news, it looks like the game will be patched to support PS2 disc swapping. Let's say you have SingStar 90s (PS2). Just boot up your PS3 SingStar. When you hit Select on the Song Select screen, you'll be able to insert the PS2 disc into your system. Voila! You have access to all the content of SingStar 90s. This feature will work on any PS3 system (even those without backwards compatibility). The patch will be available by Christmas.

SCEE is bringing some holiday cheer to Singstar in the form of a song pack. Officially named the Festive Fun SongPack, this five-song selection will debut on November 27th. This information came from ThreeSpeech, so this announcement applies only to Europeans, at least for the time being. No pricing info was announced, but we are guessing it will be £4.49, just like the Queen song packs.
