IRL: Going skiing with Smith I/O Recon goggles
Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment. Does a fortnight of snowboarding in the French Alps with an army of family and friends sound like fun? Imagine my nerd squeal when a fellow editor offered to lend me a pair of Smith I/O Recon goggles (featuring heads-up display tech from the company Recon), along with a two action cams, to gadgetize my trip. As I later discovered, GoPro footage isn't nearly as spectacular when you're not permanently backflipping, or hurtling down vertical off-piste. But hey, I managed to salvage a three-minute, personalized fail compilation from the drudgery.
Recon partners with Scott and Smith, brings MOD to the masses
We love Recon's MOD system for Ski-goggles, especially now that it's open to developers. Starting soon, an avalanche of new winter-sports enthusiasts will be able to wear the multi-sensor based statistics system atop their eyeballs, thanks to a new partnership with both Scott and Smith. The GPS touting in-goggle display will be unveiled in the new family of eyeware at a slew of outdoor sports events this month. New Blacksmithing patterns from the Beta
Elizabeth Harper was able to snap a few screenshots of the new Blacksmithing patterns from the game last night. The items all require at least level 75 and are of superior quality. That's good news for those that are looking to craft gear as they level – which can be a viable alternative to fill in certain missing pieces.You can browse through all the latest patterns below in our gallery. For a quick analysis however, take the piece that is featured in the right hand image of this article. They're tank legplates that have 1661 armor, 57 strength, 84 stamina, and 55 defense. No sockets or anything else like that. Let's compare it to the T6 warrior legs, which have 24 agility, 78 stamina, a red socket, 40 def, 41 parry, and 32 block value.%Gallery-28675%
Smith brings "world's largest all-electric truck" to the US
This one's been spreading its all-electric charm around Europe for a little while already, but it looks like Smith Electric Vehicles' Smith Newton truck is now finally making its way to the US market. According to the company, with a gross vehicle weight of over 24,000lbs, the vehicle is the "world's largest all-electric truck," with a rack of "suitcase-sized" 278 volt batteries and a 120 kilowatt motor required to push it along at speeds up to 50 mph. That combo also gives the vehicle a range of some 150 miles, and an acceleration from 0-30mph that the company says is faster than the equivalent diesel-powered truck. No word on what it'll set you back, but Smith is set to open a factory in Fresno sometime next year to accommodate its new US presence, with a larger factory capable of turning out 10,000 vehicles a year to follow in 2010. Blacksite: Area 51 director says development was 'f*cked up'
Blacksite: Area 51's creative director Harvey Smith let loose about the title's "f*cked up" development during the Montreal Inernational Game Summit. Reported by Wired, he says he wasn't too interested in the project to begin with and the game was "disastrously off rails" a year before finishing. He also says the game went from alpha to final in a "completely reprehensible" fashion. The critics agree.Smith says his openness about the problems is due to "personal accountability." It's pretty obvious that publisher Midway just wanted the game out and maybe get some daft holiday shopper purchases, rather than hold off and do the title justice with a Spring '08 release -- like many publishers opted for this year. Remember Midway, don't ruin your name (more) by just pushing cow pies out the door -- go ask Atari how that ends.[Via NextGen]
Dr. Phil talks Manhunt, but Steinberg steals the show
We're totally enjoying CBS' coverage of Manhunt 2. After Katie Couric's eye-roll inducing Notebook entry two days ago, the odiously designed CBS.com site bubbles up a clip of Dr. Phil with Early Show host Harry Smith and journalist Scott Steinberg. We're sorry, but just try not to laugh as Smith introduces Dr. Phil to the show and Steinberg starts flailing the Wiimote trying to execute the guy on screen. Of course, you'll have to go to CBS.com to watch it. We're sorry, but the networks haven't discovered the basics of embeddable code.Dr. Phil is far more careful here then the last time he talked about video game violence's effect on children during the Virginia Tech massacre -- probably because his hypothesis was dead wrong last time and he looked like a total (insult of choice goes here). Dr. Phil says about Manhunt 2, "Now the truth is, if somebody plays this game and then they go and do this in their life, there was something seriously wrong with them before they got the game. But it's modeling." We'd prefer if the mainstream media did a simple PSA and told parents not to let their children play M-rated games instead of all this fear mongering.[Via GamePolitics]
HDTV Listings for September 19, 2006
What we're watching: A brand new show, Smith, premieres on CBS tonight, with its professional thief-oriented storyline, hopefully it fares better than Heist did. Returning shows with season premieres include fellow CBS shows NCIS and The Unit, Boston Legal on ABC as well as Law & Order CI and Law & Order: SVU on NBC. That's not even mentioning new episodes of Dancing with the Stars, House and Standoff. The only way HDTV tonight could be better is if we had some sports...oh wait we do, with Tigers and White Sox playing a game that could decide the fate of the AL Central and wild card race. Just to get things kicked off properly, Cinemax is airing Saving Private Ryan in HD just after 5. What more could you ask for?Our traditional high-def listings continue below.
