Far Cry 3 will emphasize tactical freedom, but isn't skimping on scripted moments, details from Edge magazine (as spotted by Gaming Everything) reveal. The first glimpse lists the strategic improvisation possibilities, such as tying C4 to a jeep and driving it into an enemy camp, or hang-gliding over entire areas. The mission Edge played saw the protagonist, Jason Brody, hallucinating while trying to take out enemies. He was still able to stab two guards then throw the knife at another -- something we doubt we could do while (almost) perfectly lucid. The main antagonist, Vaas, is "a sociopath, and very nearly a psychopath," Edge says, and the Ubisoft development team wants the game to be "emotional and raw" while still remaining a shooter first. There will be no weapon degredation, Gaming Everything adds. Check out the entire run-down of Jason Brody's descent into mushroom madness right here.

A new MMOSG (that's Massively Multiplayer Online Social Game, which I don't recall seeing before, but sure, why not?) has sprung up, and it's called Sociotown. Now, not to knock something before it's even been released, but when I hear 'socio-' anything, I immediately think sociopath. And that's not the image you want to send across for a virtual world.Regardless, from looking at the latest footage, there are a few things I need to comment on. Won't you follow along with me? First of all, point-and-click movement is awkward. I've never liked it, despite the fun to be had in Diablo and Mythos, and prefer WASD movement. Second of all, the look of this world is similar to a lot of other similar social spaces, so no innovation there. Third, there is some interest in not being able to immediately see another person's name, forcing you to introduce yourself to him/her. Fourth, 'Socio dollars' is just more awkwardness -- why not SoBucks?

  • FOX cautions meetings between "cyber gaming" friends

Though I'd like to think that I grew callous to the treatment of MMOs in the mainstream media a long time ago, there's this bitter little flame deep inside me that is stoked every time I read a piece in the newspaper or see a bit on TV that's sensationalist, ill-informed, or just plain stupid. In the latest article to raise my ire, Fox reports on how MMOs create a uniquely unsafe environment, that puts online predators and mentally unstable people at an advantage in stalking their prey. Specifically, they claim that while people tend to have their guard up when surfing other online portals like dating sites or MySpace, people let are more at ease and trusting when it comes to bonding with guildmates, and this leaves them open to exploitation. The article seems to be a reaction to the recent "Baby Grace" case, which really had less to do with the fact that the couple met on World of Warcraft and everything to do with the fact that they were complete sociopaths. While there are some positive stories buried in the article -- including the 40 married couples who made the transition from guildmate to soulmate between Everquest and Anarchy Online, author Catherine Donaldson-Evans just can't rein in the hyperbole, concluding her article by referring to the internet as a modern-day pandora's box.
