It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/27/first-image-of-sony-nex-f3-leaked-outs-16-1-mp-sensor/">NEX-F3</a> leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of <em>Yang Canggih,</em> which says it had a chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but <em>Sony Alpha Rumors</em> has the images up). Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has lost a smidgen of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting a slight bit of the angular edges that once made the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/">NEX-7</a> the <strike>badass</strike> standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny <span>resemblance</span> to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.</p><p> Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">A35</a> will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37. According to <em>Yang Canggih, </em>it features the articulating display from the last generation of NEX cams,<span><span> </span>Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/13/sony-alpha-a57-official/">A57</a>), four more effect modes than the A35 (up from 11)</span> and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Head past the break for a shot of the A37 and then check out the links below for even more of both.</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/28/sony-alpha-a37-slt-nex-f3-ilc-cameras-leak/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/28/sony-alpha-a37-slt-nex-f3-ilc-cameras-leak/">Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 28 Apr 2012 21:03:00 EST. For those irked, you'll be pleased to know that the company has just updated both cameras to firmware version 1.05, claiming it'll "sharpen their responses." Specifically, you'll be noticing faster <strike>cold startups</strike> shutdowns, quicker response times from the front and rear dials and faster access to images in auto review. That's not all, however, as Sony has also added in-camera shading and chromatic aberration compensation for 11 of its A-mount lenses, which can translate to less time cooking your images in post. Last, but not least, the A77 gets an extra bonus for its autofocus system that improves its abilities in high-contrast environments, while the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/10/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on-video/">SAL500F40G 500mm F4 G SSM</a> super-telephoto lens will now focus faster with both shooters. Shutter finger already twitching? Don't delay, you'll find full details in the press release after the break and download information at the source link below. We spotted the new A-mount telephoto mounted on an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Alpha A77</a> at Sony's booth at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/08/were-live-from-cp-2012-in-yokohama-japan/">CP+ 2012</a>, and queued up for a chance to take some shots. The lens focused surprisingly quickly, especially given its massive 500mm fixed focal length. Moving from subject to subject at varying distances, we were typically able to achieve focus in a fraction of a second. Long lenses have traditionally been tricky on the focus front, but this guy handled it like a champ, with speeds that appeared to rival far shorter primes. The SAL500F40G, as it's to be known, will be hand built to order beginning in March, with a yet-to-be-confirmed (likely sky-high) price tag. Click on past the break to see just how quickly we can zero in on some wild CP+ show floor action.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/">Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM lens hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809106"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809107"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809108"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on/#4809111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sony500005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/10/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM lens hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/10/sony-500mm-f-4-g-ssm-lens-hands-on-video/">Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM lens hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 10 Feb 2012 08:11:00 EST. Ever since a days-long shooting session <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview-video/">back in September</a>, Sony's prized mirrorless cam has eluded us -- and the rest of the world. As you may recall, the flagship Alpha ILC was hit by the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/20/thailand-flooding-forces-sony-to-postpone-alpha-nex-7-release-c/">Thailand floods</a>, resulting in delay after delay, eventually missing the holiday shopping season entirely before resurfacing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/sony-alpha-nex-7-emerges-from-the-waters-ready-for-action/">late last month</a>. Another week later and our beloved Sony Alpha NEX-7 has finally arrived, ready to take on the streets of New York City. So what exactly is the NEX-7, and why does it cost as much as a mid-range DSLR? First off, the 24.3-megapixel APS-C ILC captures, well, 24.3-megapixel images, offering the highest resolution of any mirrorless model on the market. Its APS-C sensor is identical to the one found in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Sony's A77 DSLR</a>, measuring larger than Micro Four Thirds and on par with most full-size digital SLRs.<br /><br />If having the ability to capture mural-size images ranks fairly low on your digicam wish list, you may take comfort in some of the NEX-7's other features, such as its gorgeous and durable magnesium alloy body, built-in XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, 3-inch, 921k-dot articulating LCD and unique tri-navi control interface that enables direct access to key settings adjustments, including both aperture and shutter speed in manual mode. There's also 1080/60p HD movie capture with full manual control and microphone input support, a 10 frames-per-second continuous shooting mode (with exposure and focus locked) and a BIONZ image processor that's capable of delivering low-noise images all the way through ISO 16,000. These features combine to make the NEX-7 one of the most powerful mirrorless cameras to date, but are they enough to justify the $1,200 body-only price tag? Join us past the break to find out.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/">Sony NEX-7 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex701eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798075"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex702eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex703eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex704eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-review/#4798078"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/sonynex705eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha NEX-7 mirrorless camera review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/sony-nex-7-review/">Sony Alpha NEX-7 mirrorless camera review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/05/sony-ericsson-to-become-sony-in-mid-2012/">Sony <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">Ericsson</span></a> has a clear stance on the Android dev community: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/sony-ericssons-android-bootloader-unlocking-site-goes-live-mod/">one love</a>. In what is, apparently, a first for the company, an alpha ROM of its in-development <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/28/sony-ericsson-xperia-handsets-to-receive-ice-cream-sandwich-upg/">Ice Cream Sandwich port </a>is available for install across a trio of <em>unlocked</em> Xperia devices -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/06/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-s-review/">arc S</a>, neo V and ray. But hold your horses on that download trigger finger, this early build is only for "advanced developers" and quite a few features, like Google apps, WiFi, Bluetooth, voice, FM radio and ANT+, simply aren't functional. In other words, don't depend on this as your daily driver, but do dive deep if you know what you're doing and want a peek at Google's soon-to-be ubiquitous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-review/">OS upgrade</a>. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/sony-a77-reviewed-a-24-3-megapixel-game-changer/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/77.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
It's been a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">long time</a> coming, but the patience has paid off with Sony's A77 finally getting its first pro review. Sure, the $1,400 cost of entry (body only) will weigh heavily on even the most enthusiastic cameraman conscious. But, what's a few hundred dollars when it comes to a camera that <em>Popular Photography</em> says has "radically changed the world of DSLRs"? It seems only the rival <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/07/canon-eos-7d-gets-high-marks-all-around/">Canon 7D</a> holds a candle to this would-be king, besting Sony's latest when it comes to noise and performance at higher ISOs. However, the A77 wins on its all-around charm, with a 24.3 megapixel Exmor APS-C sensor, articulated LCD screen, world-first OLED EVF and impressive video-shooting chops. Video-wise, that top dollar gets you a high-end performance of 60fps at 1920 x 1080 with the fast <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">phase-detection</a> auto-focus we've also seen on its predecessors, the Sony A55 and A33.<br />
<br />
<em>Popular Photography</em> does add a single caveat to the largely very positive conclusion: video enthusiasts should probably hold tight to see what Canon and Nikon counter with. Especially if you're in possession of multiple lenses. Aside from that, what's stopping you? Dig in to all the nitty-gritty details below, and we'd advise cutting down on those impulse eBay purchases -- this magnesium-alloyed beauty will certainly make a financial dent when it lands, if not a physical one.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/sony-a77-reviewed-a-24-3-megapixel-game-changer/">Sony A77 reviewed: A 24.3 megapixel game-changer?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 03 Oct 2011 13:18:00 EST. Looks like we weren't the only one afflicted by the Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-nex-5n-replaces-nex-5-adds-16-1-mp-sensor-25-600-max-iso/">NEX-5N</a> camera's annoying <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/16/sony-alpha-nex-5n-makes-clicking-sound-when-moved-renders-captu/">click problem</a>. In case you missed it, the camera displayed the disruptive tendency of producing an audible click loud enough to ruin any 1080/60p video if it was moved suddenly while shooting. Tonight Sony updated its support site to promise a "performance improvement" available to all owners under the camera's warranty that it claims reduces the sound. At the moment we don't have any more information on what's causing the sound or what the improvement entails, but owners can dial 888-868-7392 to get their units upgraded.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/23/sony-offers-adjustment-for-nex-5n-camera-to-reduce-clicking-so/">Sony offers 'adjustment' for NEX-5N camera to reduce clicking sound while recording video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 21:42:00 EST. We've spent a few <strong><em>click</em></strong> days shooting <strong><em>click</em></strong> with <strong><em>click</em></strong> Sony's new <strong><em>click</em></strong> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-nex-5n-replaces-nex-5-adds-16-1-mp-sensor-25-600-max-iso/">NEX-5N</a> <strong><em>click</em></strong><strong><em> click </em></strong><strong><em>click</em></strong> and were very <strong><em>click</em></strong> impressed with its <strong><em>click</em></strong> still image performance <strong><em>click </em></strong><strong><em>click </em></strong>but <strong><em>click </em></strong>noticed some... Oh man, we've <em>gotta</em> hit Stop. As you can see, the camera suffers from a rather significant yet-to-be-diagnosed condition that outputs a mysterious clicking sound whenever you move it about. Since it's quite faint, this is little more than a minor nuisance when shooting stills, but when you go to playback video <strong><em>click</em></strong> it's impossible to ignore, rendering the audio component of your video virtually useless.<br />
<br />
We've been able to isolate the sound to the camera body itself, so it's completely independent of the lens and other accessories. We also happen to be testing a variety of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/sony-alpha-nex-7-hands-on-preview-video/">new Sony products </a>this week in San Diego, and had Sony reps on hand to acknowledge and confirm the issue, which seems to plague every NEX-5N that we've tried. This is still very fresh, so Sony doesn't have a fix or even a statement to issue, but because 1080/60p video is one of this camera's headline features, we're going to recommend holding off on your purchase until the company can confirm what's causing the issue. Jump past the break to hear it for yourself in our demo video.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>To clarify our experience, we've only tested four cameras, all of which were likely manufactured at the same time. All four cameras presented the same clicking sound, but Sony is still investigating the issue, and has by no means implied yet that all NEX-5Ns are affected. We will of course share any updates as we receive them from Sony.<br />

There are some cameras that we would be willing to use in a bind, some that we wouldn't hesitate to shoot with, and a very select few that would motivate a cross-country journey, just for the chance to spend a few days behind the lens. Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">Alpha NEX-7</a> falls within that incredibly unique final category -- in fact, we've done just that, flying from New York to San Diego to go hands-on with one of only a half-dozen pre-production samples to have landed on American soil. After seeing a very early NEX-7 prototype a few months ago, it didn't take much convincing to get us on a plane.<br />
<br />
Sony's 24.3 megapixel APS-C masterpiece represents a giant leap forward for the interchangeable lens market, theoretically capable of capturing images identical in quality to its much larger <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Alpha A77</a> counterpart, but in a body only slightly larger than the NEX-C3. Pair that image quality with an XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, a revamped tri-navi interface, standard hot-shoe, 1080 / 60p AVCHD video, microphone input, and a built-in flash, and you have one very worthy compact DSLR replacement. That said, the NEX-7 kit's $1,350 price tag is far more than many are willing to spend on a camera. But is that premium pricing justified? Sony is on a roll with some fairly incredible product unveilings this morning. The Alpha A65 is almost an afterthought when compared to today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">NEX-7</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">A77</a> announcements, but this $900 (body only) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSLR/">DSLR</a> targets the vastly popular entry-level category, while still including a new OLED electronic viewfinder, 24.3 megapixel CMOS APS-C sensor, and 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture. Many of the A77's other features made the cut as well, including Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology, an ISO range of 100-16,000, object tracking autofocus, and a high-speed shooting mode (though the pricier model can shoot 12 fps, compared to 10 fps on the A65). You will be missing out on the A77's nifty three-way tilt and swivel LCD, though the A65's display does support tilt. Also missing is a 19-point AF sensor (the A65's has 15 points), a secondary text LCD, and support for an optional vertical grip. Jump past the break for a brief video walkthrough from Sony, along with a sneak peek at the A77.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/">Sony Alpha A65</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385733"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65cardslot-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385734"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65flashupwsal1855-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385735"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65front-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385736"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65leftside-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a65/#4385737"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-slt-a65rearvertical-1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-announces-entry-level-a65-adds-yet-another-dslr-to-the-alp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony announces entry-level A65, adds yet another DSLR to the Alpha family</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-announces-entry-level-a65-adds-yet-another-dslr-to-the-alp/">Sony announces entry-level A65, adds yet another DSLR to the Alpha family</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. When it comes to cameras, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/digital+slr/">digital SLRs</a> are a breed all their own. Many DSLR owners don't upgrade their bodies often -- if at all -- and even fewer would consider a switch to a competing camera system, especially after investing in a handful of high-end lenses. Manufacturers need to push innovation even further to target this segment of the market -- when some cameras cost thousands of dollars and already offer excellent performance, simply releasing a body with more megapixels and HD shooting options won't prompt photographers to pull out their credit cards. With its massive 24.3 megapixel sensor and high-res OLED electronic viewfinder, however, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony">Sony's</a> $1,399 Alpha A77 may just be the DSLR upgrade you've been waiting for. We spent a few days with a pre-production A77 paired with Sony's brand new 16-50mm f/2.8 lens ($1,999 in an A77 kit), and were very impressed with what will undoubtedly be a worthy successor to the well-received A700. Jump past the break for our initial impressions, along with plenty of still photo and HD video samples.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/">Sony Alpha A77 (hands-on)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385083"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0456_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385084"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0463_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385085"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0466_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385086"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0470_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on/#4385087"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-img0474_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha A77 hands-on preview (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Sony Alpha A77 hands-on preview (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. Without a doubt, today's biggest news on the NEX front is Sony's 24.3 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">NEX-7</a>. But for photographers looking for a bit less power (and a lower $600 body-only price tag), the NEX-5N delivers some of the 7's headline features in a slimmed-down magnesium-alloy body. Sony boosted the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/sony-nex-5-preview/">NEX-5's</a> sensor from 14 to 16 megapixels in the N, also adding 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture, a 10 fps continuous shooting mode, a touch-enabled 3-inch LCD, and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 25,600. The mid-range NEX cam also supports an optional XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, which attaches to its accessory port and carries a price tag of $350. We should note that although the accessory port appears to be similar to that used on the NEX-C3 and previous gen NEX-5, the OLED attachment is only compatible with the 5N. Want to know more? Jump past the break for a brief overview video, and check out the rather comprehensive gallery of press shots below.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-5n/">Sony Alpha NEX-5N</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-5n/#4376705"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08057_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-5n/#4376706"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08059_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-5n/#4376707"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08062_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-5n/#4376708"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08082_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-nex-5n/#4376709"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-fda-ev1swnex-5nblackrear1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-nex-5n-replaces-nex-5-adds-16-1-mp-sensor-25-600-max-iso/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony NEX-5N replaces NEX-5, adds 16.1 MP sensor, 25,600 max ISO, OLED viewfinder option (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-nex-5n-replaces-nex-5-adds-16-1-mp-sensor-25-600-max-iso/">Sony NEX-5N replaces NEX-5, adds 16.1 MP sensor, 25,600 max ISO, OLED viewfinder option (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. During our trip to Sony HQ <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">earlier this summer</a> to check out the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/">NEX-C3</a>, company reps hinted that the best was yet to come -- and held true to their word. Today's NEX-7 release breaks a handful of digicam records, becoming not only the first mirrorless camera to pack a 24.3 megapixel APS-C sensor, but the first APS-C cam of any shape and size to smash through this notable barrier -- potentially delivering unparalleled image quality for a camera of its size. Sony's new flagship mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (ILC) also features the same OLED viewfinder included with its brand-new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/">Alpha A77</a>, delivering XGA (1024 x 768-pixel) resolution directly to your eye. There's also 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture, a full-size hot shoe, and a completely redesigned "Tri-Navi" interface. We spent a few minutes with a pre-production NEX-7 earlier this month -- jump past the break for our initial impressions.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/">Sony Alpha NEX-7 (hands-on)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376643"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08064_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376645"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08065_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376646"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08067_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376647"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08070_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-7-hands-on/#4376648"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-11-2011-08-11-dsc08073_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony unveils NEX-7: 24.3 MP sensor, OLED viewfinder, $1199 price tag (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/">Sony unveils NEX-7: 24.3 MP sensor, OLED viewfinder, $1199 price tag (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 01:00:00 EST. <br />
Look away now if you're desperate for a beach holiday, because the above video features a Sony camera chilling out in the sand, before some lucky fella picks it up for a quick snap of the calm sea. Now, the clip doesn't actually indicate which model this camera is, but the video uploader -- with a fresh account hosting just this one video -- simply wrote "Sony Alpha <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a77">A77</a>?" in the title, along with "Taiwan" in the description. Our gut feeling tells us that this leak comes straight out of Sony's Taiwanese PR team, who's keen to show off this mysterious camera's quick autofocus in live view mode (presumably there's a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Translucent+Mirror/">translucent mirror</a> inside to enable this), as well as its sand-friendly body. That said, the folks should really get that Zeiss lens inspected -- as pointed out by <em>Sony Alpha Rumors</em>, we seriously doubt it shares the same level of protection as the body. Poor thing.<br />
<br />
Focusing on the camera again: we only get to see its back, but this alone is enough to prove that we're looking at a never-before-seen model from Sony -- while it sports a similar swivel screen as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/A55">A55's</a> (whereas the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a560%2Ca580">A560 and A580</a> only have tilting screens), it also has a different set of buttons. In fact, said button layout is identical to that on the transparent prototype <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/08/sonys-see-through-alpha-dslr-gets-the-hands-on-treatment-proba/">manhandled by <em>Pocket-lint</em></a> back in March! Combining these factors together, we say this A77 teaser is pretty legit. Now, how about a date and some prices for this 24 megapixel beast, Sony?<br />
<br />
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<br />

Sony may have yet to officially announce its upcoming <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a77">Alpha A77</a> camera, but thanks to a nomination page ahead of this month's Good Design Expo, we can finally get a glimpse of what this imager will pack internally. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/sonys-a77-and-a65-spied-in-leaked-image-announcement-to-follow/">Indeed</a>, the A77 will come with a 24 megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor, along with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/translucent+mirror/">translucent mirror</a> that enables full-time continuous autofocus. Additionally, with the help of its new BIONZ engine, we have a "world's fastest" burst rate of 12 frames per second, which goes nicely alongside the camera's 60p and 24p video recording modes (presumably in AVCHD). What also caught our eyes was this "world's first" XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, while the A55 and A35 come with just LCD versions. Well, only time will tell whether this camera lives up to expectations -- by the sound of it, we'll probably be able to play with one within a few weeks from now.<br />
<br />
[Thanks, pontsuku.]<br />

<strong>Update: </strong>And just like that, the nomination page has promptly been taken down. But their enormous size and weight, lofty price tags, and intimidating design have forced casual photographers to focus on compact and superzoom point-and-shoot cameras instead, often leaving those bulky, confusing monstrosities to the pros. Enter mirrorless models, which scrap an optical viewfinder in favor of shrinking both body size and price tag, have provided the rest of us with a welcome mat to the world of powerful sensors, high-speed shooting, and swappable lenses -- with relatively little sacrifice along the way.<br /><br />The 16-megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">Alpha NEX-C3</a> builds upon the successes of its predecessor -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sonys-nex3-5-cameras-priced-june-release-date-leaked/">NEX-3</a> -- sporting a slimmer body and redesigned APS-C sensor. It also adds a reported 20-percent boost in battery life, improved low light performance, and a slimmer, more attractive design. We spent well over a month using the NEX-C3 as our primary camera for product shoots, trade shows, hands-on videos, and vacations, and were blown away by its performance as both a versatile still snapper and a powerful video camera. It's important to note that while the C3 does capture 720p video, it can't shoot in 1080p, so you'll need to look elsewhere if you need full HD. Like all mirrorless cameras, there's also no optical viewfinder, nor is there a traditional hot shoe. Instead, Sony included the same propriety connector found on the NEX-3 and NEX-5, enabling connectivity with a dedicated external microphone and a limited variety of external flashes, including the compact strobe that ships in the box. While some photographers may find the NEX-C3 inadequate for their needs, we absolutely loved shooting with it, and we think you will too. Jump past the break to see why.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/">Sony NEX-C3 review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305232"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07756_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305233"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07758_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305234"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07761_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305235"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07763_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-review/#4305236"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/2011-07-20-dsc07767_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha NEX-C3 review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/sony-alpha-nex-c3-review/">Sony Alpha NEX-C3 review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 08:00:00 EST. First shown <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/sony-advanced-model-alpha-a77-dslr-emerges-at-photokina-e/">nearly a year ago</a>, what appears to be a leaked official photo might finally mean the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">forever teased</a> A77 is finally on the horizon. If you'll recall, the high-end Alpha was sporting a svelte <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/08/sonys-see-through-alpha-dslr-gets-the-hands-on-treatment-proba/">see-through body</a>, and the only tidbits the Japanese firm would confirm were the 2011 ship date and that all forthcoming Alpha's would have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/26/sony-indicates-all-future-alpha-models-will-include-translucent/">translucent mirrors</a> -- you know, the spiffy kind that enables DSLRs to focus <em>while</em> shooting video. Opportunely, the above pictured image also came with a bevy of specs, which we'll have to assume apply to the pricier A77: a 24 megapixel sensor, 11 point AF, 10 frame per second burst and an ISO of 102,400. Also on the docket is USB 3.0, and a ship date of October. Sony announced the successor to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a> digital camera <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">earlier this week</a>, so we decided to take a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/e3+2011">post-E3</a> road trip down to the electronics maker's US headquarters in San Diego to check out the $599 NEX-C3 for ourselves. We'll analyze the new sensor's image quality in a full review before the camera hits stores later this summer, but from our initial impressions, the new cam appears to offer fairly minor tweaks compared to its predecessor. It's incredibly small for a camera with an APS-C sensor -- perhaps even awkwardly so, when paired with the comparatively massive 18-55mm kit lens or Sony's enormous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215321">18-200mm optic</a> -- but not small enough to be any less functional than the previous iteration. Like the NEX-3, the camera was designed to be held by resting the lens on your left palm, rather than by the grip, so size isn't likely to be an issue. Cosmetic changes include a magnesium alloy top panel, front microphone positioning, and a more efficient display hinge, which helped reduce the camera's thickness. We'll be posting a full review in several weeks, but jump past the break for more observations, and a hands-on video from Sony HQ, shot with the NEX-C3.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/">Sony NEX-C3 Hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215304"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1185_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215305"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1187_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215306"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1191_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215307"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1197_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-hands-on/#4215308"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-6-10-img1202_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony NEX-C3 hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/11/sony-nex-c3-hands-on-video/">Sony NEX-C3 hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 11 Jun 2011 13:00:00 EST. We've been (impatiently) waiting for Sony to update its NEX line of digital cameras since the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a> was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/24/sony-nex-3-discontinued-probably-has-nex-5-to-blame/">discontinued earlier this year</a>, and it looks like a worthy successor has finally been named. Announced today, the NEX-C3 appears identical to the model <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/22/sony-nex-3-successor-nex-c3-alpha-a35-images-leaked/">leaked in April</a>, and uses the same format APS-C image sensor as its predecessor, bumping resolution to 16.2 megapixels in a camera body smaller than the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX5/">NEX-5</a>. Sony says the new entry-level cam is designed to fill the gap between point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras, and is the smallest body to pack an APS-C sensor, offering DSLR-level image quality -- the same 16.2 MP chip is also included in its new full-size Alpha A35, which replaces the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/A33/">A33</a>. Both cameras can shoot at up to 5.5 fps (the A35 adds a 7 fps mode at 8.4 megapixels), and include 3-inch LCDs, with the NEX keeping its hallmark tilt display, and the A35 adding Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TranslucentMirror/">Translucent Mirror</a> live-view mode, and an electronic viewfinder. We have plenty more to share, including a new lens and flash, along with pricing and availability for all, so jump past the break for the juicy details. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/">Sony NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188960"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188962"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188961"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188963"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-gallery/#4188965"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/06/2011-06-08-sonycam14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony announces NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 cameras, new macro lens</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/sony-announces-nex-c3-and-alpha-a35-cameras-new-macro-lens/">Sony announces NEX-C3 and Alpha A35 cameras, new macro lens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 00:00:00 EST. If you didn't jump on an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">Alpha A33</a> when you had the chance, you'll probably be disappointed when your eyes glaze over the next few words -- Sony has discontinued production of the translucent mirror-packed shooter. On its site, the company has noted that production has halted in Japan, without specific reasoning as to why -- though some might say that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/sony-a55-a33-video-recording-limited-by-overheating-sensor/">overheating sensor</a> was just too much to bear. It's not often that a seven month-old DSLR gets canned, but if Sony's got a refined sensor waiting in a doubly refined successor... well, that'll put a plug in the waterworks real quick.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/03/sony-kills-a33-dslr-production-auctions-off-unused-birthday-cak/">Sony kills A33 DSLR production, auctions off unused birthday cake</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 03 Apr 2011 05:15:00 EST. We've been teasing you with images of this see-through beauty since Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">announced plans</a> to bring its translucent mirror to the A77. Unfortunately, we've still yet to get our dirty paws on its hard shell, but we're happy to live vicariously through <em>Pocket-lint's</em> hands-on of Sony's clear-bodied <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony+alpha">Alpha</a> camera. According to its post, the concept DSLR is based on a heretofore unidentified mid-range camera that touts an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Exmor">Exmor</a> APS HD CMOS sensor and "fast continuous autofocus." The camera is slated for a late 2011 release, but chances are it won't come with that sweet transparent body. So soak it up while you can, because this could be the last you see of the crystalline casing -- hit the source link for even more eye candy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/08/sonys-see-through-alpha-dslr-gets-the-hands-on-treatment-proba/">Sony's see-through Alpha DSLR gets the hands-on treatment, probably won't get a launch date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 03:49:00 EST. That satisfying clunk of the mirror swinging up and away, the rapid-fire clatter of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dslr">DSLRs</a> going into burst mode, could be on its last legs. Well, for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony,alpha">Sony Alphas</a> at least. The company has confirmed that its translucent mirror tech, most recently confirmed to be coming to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">A77</a> and earlier shown on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">A55 and A33</a>, will be coming to the entire Alpha line. The sensor actually captures light through the mirror itself, which is just reflective enough to allow for real-time focusing even while capturing video. It's something of a bold move in the generally stoic DSLR market, and only time will tell whether it helps to boost Sony's street cred up to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/canon">Canon</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nikon">Nikon</a> levels.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/26/sony-indicates-all-future-alpha-models-will-include-translucent/">Sony indicates all future Alpha models will include translucent mirrors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 26 Feb 2011 02:53:00 EST. We've been hearing rumors about a mystical, magical <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony,a700">A700</a> replacement <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/sony-advanced-model-alpha-a77-dslr-emerges-at-photokina-e/">since last year</a>, and now Sony's gone ahead and made things more official. The teaser image shows a transparent case, but the bigger news here is the transparent mirror, the same as found last year on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">A55 and A33</a>. This allows for advanced, real-time autofocus while capturing stills or HD video. Behind that mirror will be an Exmor CMOS sensor and, while Sony isn't saying how many pixels it'll be packing, expectations are that it will fall in the 20 megapixel range. Sony has also announced a new battery grip and a new flash for the camera though details are slim on those as well. All are slated to ship "later this year," giving you plenty of time to make room in your camera bag -- and maybe your budget.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/sony-announces-a700-replacement-the-a77-will-ship-this-year/">Sony announces A700 replacement, the A77, will ship this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 09:34:00 EST. Do you feel constrained by the drabness of silver and black cameras? Well its time to let your fashionable freak flag fly, because Sony has announced that it'll now offer its NEX-5 camera in <i>gold</i>. The camera remains otherwise unchanged since its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/sony-alpha-nex-cameras-now-up-for-pre-order-start-at-549/">debut this past summer</a>, and unfortunately the company hasn't released the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/sony-reveals-color-variation-concept-models-of-nex-5-and-nex-3/">other colors seen at Photokina</a>, but hey, a little bling is better than none.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/14/sonys-nex-5-now-available-in-gold/">Sony's NEX-5, now available in gold!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 06:12:00 EST. So <em>this</em> is why the promo video accompanying Sony's launch of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">A55 and A33</a> was set against a snowy backdrop. It turns out that these oh-so-revolutionary translucent mirror shooters can't keep their cool for any longer than 11 minutes when recording video at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius with Image Stabilization turned on. The A55 is even quicker to overheat at 9 minutes, though it's worth noting that with IS switched off you can obtain the maximum of nearly half an hour of footage -- provided the weather doesn't heat up. Sony blames this on the APS-C-sized sensor within, and it' true that plenty of DSLRs come with artificial time limits -- our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/28/nikon-d5000-review-head-to-head-with-d90/">D5000</a> won't let us get past five minutes however we try to sweet-talk it -- but it's an irksome limitation to consider if you're thinking of buying either of these Alphas for their otherwise awesome <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/">video capabilities</a>.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/sony-a55-a33-video-recording-limited-by-overheating-sensor/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony A55 / A33 video recording limited by overheating sensor</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/sony-a55-a33-video-recording-limited-by-overheating-sensor/">Sony A55 / A33 video recording limited by overheating sensor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 04:19:00 EST. We've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/06/sonys-flagship-and-advanced-amateur-alpha-dslrs-nearly-here/">heard</a> Sony use the term "Advanced Model" when dealing with concepts before, and it seems that it's using said code once more to disguise what may end up being the A77. Rumors have been flaring over the past few weeks, noting that this particular <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Alpha/">Alpha</a> DSLR would be showcased at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Photokina/">Photokina</a> before being officially unveiled at CES 2011. Few details were given, but we're able to tell that it'll shoot HD video in AVCHD and will be compatible with a vertical grip. Moreover, it'll ship with a translucent mirror (as found in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/">A55 and A33</a>) and an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. At the company's Photokina press conference, an executive noted that the cam will be "far more powerful than the a55," and that it'll be aimed at "serious enthusiast photographers."<br />
<br />
A slew of concept / prototype lenses were also encased (including a comically large 500mm f/4 cannon) at Sony's booth, not to mention a few that'll definitely be available from 2011 and 2012. Back at the presser, we were informed that a grand total of ten A-mount (Alpha DSLR compatible) lenses will be on sale by 2012, and it's also considering working with a number of partners in order to develop third-party E-mount lenses for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX/">NEX</a> range. Moreover, a firmware update is slated for mid-October to bring autofocus support to A-mount lenses used on E-mount cameras, aperture control in video mode and customizable keys, while the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/15/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/">NEX-VG10 Handycam</a> will see an A-mount lens firmware update in November. Speaking of E-mount cameras, Sony's also developing its own micro flash for use in low(er)-light situations, and considering that it recently grabbed a full 50 percent of the mirrorless market share in Europe, we'd guess it's nowhere near slowing down on the innovation. Smiles all around, right? <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-3/">Sony's concept box at Photokina: 'Advanced Model' Alpha DSLR, flexible flash, lenses</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-3/#3385846"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-prototype-a-e-mount-cameras-photokina1147_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-3/#3385847"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-prototype-a-e-mount-cameras-photokina1146_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-3/#3385848"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-prototype-a-e-mount-cameras-photokina1145_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-3/#3385849"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-prototype-a-e-mount-cameras-photokina1144_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-3/#3385850"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-prototype-a-e-mount-cameras-photokina1143_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/asas/">Sony's Photokina 2010 press conference</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/asas/#3386150"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-photokina-2010-press-event1400-1285081146_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/asas/#3386151"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-photokina-2010-press-event1399-1285081148_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/asas/#3386152"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-photokina-2010-press-event1397-1285081150_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/asas/#3386153"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-photokina-2010-press-event1395-1285081152_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/asas/#3386154"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/sony-photokina-2010-press-event1394-1285081153_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/sony-advanced-model-alpha-a77-dslr-emerges-at-photokina-e/">Sony 'Advanced Model' (Alpha A77?) You didn't expect us to let something as delicious as Sony's all-new Translucent Mirror Technology slide by without us playing with it, did you? The freshly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">announced and priced</a> A55 and A33 Alpha DSLRs slipped out in Taipei this morning, where our crack Engadget Chinese reporters were at the ready with their own picture-taking equipment. Early feedback describes the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/#3291430">electronic viewfinder</a> on these shooters as beautiful and very bright, though some rainbow-effect artifacting starts to become apparent if you shift your viewpoint. The bodies of the two new cameras appeared identical in the hand, with the big differences contained within, such as the A55's faster 10fps burst mode. The A33 is still no slouch at 7fps, though, and video of it chewing through pictures at that rate can be seen after the break. We've also got a sample from the camera itself showing off that fast continuous autofocus. All in all, our Chinese brethren found themselves mildly disappointed that Sony didn't go for a radical physical redesign given the internal rearrangements, but the performance and feature sets were nothing to complain about.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/">Sony Alpha A55 and A33 hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/#3291424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/10x00824salphaa3355z412_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/#3291425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/10x00824salphaa3355z413_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/#3291430"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/10x00824salphaa3355z418_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/#3291426"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/10x00824salphaa3355z414_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/#3291427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/10x00824salphaa3355z415_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha A55 and A33 hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-hands-on/">Sony Alpha A55 and A33 hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 07:13:00 EST. Just a few days after seeing the Alpha <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/20/sonys-alpha-a580-and-a560-leak-out-with-1080i-video-recording-m?icid=sphere_blogsmith_inpage_engadget">A580 and A560 leak out</a> onto the DSLR stage, here we are with the official word from Sony. As followup to the Alpha A550, both the 16.2 megapixel A580 and 14.2 megapixel A560 with new Exmor APS HD CMOS sensors and the latest Bionz image processors, capable of 7fps continuous shooting and capturing video with stereo audio in both AVCHD 1920x1080 60i or MP4 (QuickTime Motion JPEG) formats, the latter being better suited for consumer-oriented video editing software. Other commonalities are a new 15-point phase-detection autofocus, 3-inch articulating LCD with new Focus Check Live View mode, 100 - 12,800 ISO ranges, support for Memory Stick Pro Duo and SDHC/SDXC cards, and an optical viewfinder with 95 percent frame coverage. Wait, there's more: both cams also feature 3D sweep panorama that can be played back on 3D televisions and a refined Auto HDR mode that combines a burst of three frames into a single ultra-realistic image. The A580 will be available in October for &euro;900 while the A560 will land in the first quarter of 2011 for &euro;800.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a580-and-a560-press-pics/">Sony Alpha A580 and A560 press pics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a580-and-a560-press-pics/#3290972"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/engadget-5dslr-a560ltoplg-800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a580-and-a560-press-pics/#3290973"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/engadget-4dslr-a560l-500tiltscreenalg-800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a580-and-a560-press-pics/#3290974"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/engadget-3dslr-a560l-500ss01lg-800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a580-and-a560-press-pics/#3290975"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/engadget-2dslr-a560l-500lv01lg-800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a580-and-a560-press-pics/#3290976"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/engadget-1dslr-a560lwflash-upwsal1855lg-800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a580-and-a560-shoot-avchd-1080i-or-mp4-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha A580 and A560 shoot AVCHD 1080i or MP4 video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a580-and-a560-shoot-avchd-1080i-or-mp4-video/">Sony Alpha A580 and A560 shoot AVCHD 1080i or MP4 video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 01:54:00 EST. We told you August 24 would be a significant day for Sony, and sure enough, the company has let the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/13/sony-circles-august-24-for-all-new-alpha-dslr-launch-event/">translucent mirror</a> cat out of the bag nice and early today. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/18/sony-alpha-a55-makes-articulating-cameo-a33-and-some-rumored-sp/">A55 and A33</a> offer Sony's brand spanking new Translucent Mirror Technology, which allows for such fine things as continuous <em>phase-detect</em> autofocus while shooting at up to 10fps (7fps on the A33) or recording Full HD AVCHD video. A newly developed 15-point autofocus system is also included, with 16.2 and 14.2 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensors for the A55 and A33, respectively. Both shooters come with a fully articulated, 920k-dot, 3-inch LCD screen, while 3D panoramas, automated HDR shot creation, and an Auto+ mode fill out the software goodies. Prices are set at $750 for the A55 in October and $650 for the A33 in September -- you can figure out if they're worth it by checking out the early previews below.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Alpha A55 and A33 official: translucent mirror, Full HD video, continuous autofocus</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/sony-alpha-a55-and-a33-official-translucent-mirror-full-hd-vid/">Sony Alpha A55 and A33 official: translucent mirror, Full HD video, continuous autofocus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 01:41:00 EST. If Sony's camera division were a ship, the crew would be shiftily eying the rowboats right about now, because <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/18/sony-alpha-a55-makes-articulating-cameo-a33-and-some-rumored-sp/">yet another pair </a>of Sony Alpha DSLRs have just sprung out another gaping hole. <em>Sony Alpha Rumors</em> brings convincing pictures of two <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/09/sony-alpha-a550-dslr-reviewed-new-tricks-new-trade-offs/">Alpha A550</a> successors, the A580 and A560, which reportedly feature 16 megapixel and 14 megapixel sensors respectively. Like their predecessor, both feature 100-12,800 ISO ranges, Memory Stick and SD card slots and a fancy tilting LCD display, but now also reportedly sport 15 autofocus points (up from 9) and a 1080i AVCHD video recording mode. Pricing and availability are still in the cards, but don't fret -- we'll find out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/13/sony-circles-august-24-for-all-new-alpha-dslr-launch-event/">soon enough</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/20/sonys-alpha-a580-and-a560-leak-out-with-1080i-video-recording-m/">Sony's Alpha A580 and A560 leak out with 1080i video recording mode?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 10:07:00 EST. In the market for a Sony shooter or two? The company's upcoming lineup can't seem to stay off the internet, which lucky for you serves as a great source for planning holiday gift plans. First up the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Alpha/">Alpha</a> A55, pictured above with an apparent articulating display. According to the <em>DChome </em>forums, there's a 16.7 megapixel APS CMOS sensor, a translucent mirror, 15-point AF, 1080 / 60i video, 10fps continuous shooting, an ISO range of 100 to 25,600, dual memory card slots (we'd guess <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/sony-announces-line-of-sd-memory-cards-no-really/">SD and MemoryStick</a>), and an eventual retail price of $900 to $1,000. Also pictured on the site is the A33 -- with an unmoving display -- spec'd at a reported 14 megapixels, ISO range of 100 to 12,800, and 1080i video. The expected launch is August 24th, but bear in mind this all is just a rumor for now -- keep your wallet and check and don't do anything rash, k?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/18/sony-alpha-a55-makes-articulating-cameo-a33-and-some-rumored-sp/">Sony Alpha A55 makes articulating cameo, A33 and some rumored specs tag along</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 17:54:00 EST. News has been a bit barren on the DSLR front lately (not counting <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/13/pentax-k-x-introduced-in-four-new-colors-double-rainbow-now-ful/">Pentax's color explosion</a> earlier on), but that's not going to last for much longer. Sony is starting up the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/nikon-d3100-bundle-pops-up-in-best-buy-database-with-september-1/">fall refresh cycle</a> with "never-before-seen" Alpha models, which will be shown off at an event on August 24 alongside the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/15/sony-nex-vg10-hd-camcorder-preview/">NEX-VG10</a> and some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/08/sonys-latest-cyber-shots-boast-3d-sweep-panorama-background-de/">3D-capable Cyber-shots</a>. We've no way of knowing what's in store, but if you're in a speculative kind of mood, <em>Sony Alpha Rumors</em> suggests the new shooters will include a semi-transparent mirror (most intriguing!) and a pleasingly fast 10fps burst shooting mode. While Sony may have its pricey <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nex-vg10">NEX-VG10</a> camcorder sucking up the limelight at yesterday's showcase, let's not forget the electronic giant's more humble photographic devices. Just a few steps away we stumbled upon these near-identical <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/09/sonys-value-minded-a290-dslr-gets-official-drags-big-bro-a390/">Alpha A390 and A290</a> entry-level DSLRs, with the former donning a tilting LCD and live view capability to live up to its bigger price tag. We can't comment on picture quality due to the lack of sample shots, but we were certainly impressed by both cameras' build quality -- kudos to Sony for the much improved grip, and we also liked the firm chassis (plus its various knobs and flaps) that didn't feel cheap despite sounding hollow. On a similar note, the 2.7-inch LCD looked sharp and served us well for all purposes, although we didn't get to test it outdoor. What really bewildered us was the lens continuously auto-focusing while the camera remained stationary -- that couldn't be good for the battery, and we'd like to see how battery life fares in upcoming reviews. Anyhow, enjoy our hands-on photos.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a390-and-a290-dslrs-hands-on/">Sony Alpha A390 and A290 DSLRs hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a390-and-a290-dslrs-hands-on/#3178941"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonya390a2902010-07-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a390-and-a290-dslrs-hands-on/#3178906"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonya390a2902010-07-15-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a390-and-a290-dslrs-hands-on/#3178907"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonya390a2902010-07-15-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a390-and-a290-dslrs-hands-on/#3178908"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonya390a2902010-07-15-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-alpha-a390-and-a290-dslrs-hands-on/#3178909"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/sonya390a2902010-07-15-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/16/sony-alpha-a390-and-a290-dslrs-hands-on/">Sony Alpha A390 and A290 DSLRs hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 19:53:00 EST. What a way to celebrate 25 years of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Handycam/">Handycam</a> brand, right? Out of <strike>absolutely</strike> (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/sony-teases-high-end-camcorder-with-exmore-apc-hd-sensor-and-int/">almost</a>) nowhere, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sony/">Sony</a> has just upended the entire prosumer <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/camcorder/">camcorder</a> universe, and it may very well sway you from purchasing that Canon EOS 7D for video purposes. For all intents and purposes, this is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/MicroFourThirds/">Micro Four Thirds</a> for your camcorder, but since Olympus and Panasonic own that specific technology, Sony's left calling the NEX-VG10 an "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/21/sony-intros-alpha-dslr-concepts-micro-four-thirds-model-include/">interchangeable</a> lens HD camcorder." Moreover, it's the first Handycam to sport an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor (the same one found in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/sonys-nex-3-nex-5-interchangeable-lens-cameras-get-reviewed/">NEX-5 and NEX-3</a>), and it'll shoot 1080p (1,920 x 1,080/60i at 24Mbps, if we're being precise) with a wealth of E-mount and A-mount lenses. When not handling live action, it's also capable of snapping stills at 14.2 megapixels, and the 18-200mm lens that's bundled with it is about as versatile as they come. Budding videographers will also appreciate the Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone (yes, seriously), not to mention the 3-inch swivel display, Optical Steadyshot image stabilization, BIONZ processor and twin accessory shoes. There's no internal storage to speak of, but it <i>will</i> accept SDHC / SDXC (huzzah!) in addition to MS Pro Duo. Get ready to get wowed this September when it lands for around $2,000. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-handycam-nex-vg10-hd-interchangeable-lens-camcorder/">Sony Handycam NEX-VG10 HD interchangeable lens camcorder</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-handycam-nex-vg10-hd-interchangeable-lens-camcorder/#3170669"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/nex-vg10-sony-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-handycam-nex-vg10-hd-interchangeable-lens-camcorder/#3170670"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/nex-vg10-sony-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-handycam-nex-vg10-hd-interchangeable-lens-camcorder/#3170671"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/nex-vg10-sony-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-handycam-nex-vg10-hd-interchangeable-lens-camcorder/#3170672"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/nex-vg10-sony-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-handycam-nex-vg10-hd-interchangeable-lens-camcorder/#3170673"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/nex-vg10-sony-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/14/sony-issues-nex-vg10-first-interchangeable-lens-hd-camcorder/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony issues NEX-VG10: first interchangeable lens HD Handycam camcorder</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/14/sony-issues-nex-vg10-first-interchangeable-lens-hd-camcorder/">Sony issues NEX-VG10: first interchangeable lens HD Handycam camcorder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 00:42:00 EST. In every geek's life, the time must come when he or she steps away from the pocket-friendly compact point-and-shooter and straps up with a hefty DSLR to do <em>real </em>photography with. Or such was the received wisdom until not too long ago. It's still the case that lenses, bound by the laws of physics, will protrude more than most of us want them to, but mirrorless Micro Four Thirds shooters from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/01/olympus-e-pl1-review/">Olympus</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/03/panasonic-lumix-dmc-gf1-hands-on/">Panasonic</a>, along with Samsung's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/samsung-nx10-reviewed-a-worthy-alternative-to-micro-four-thirds/">NX series</a>, have shown that prosumer camera bodies don't always have to be that bulky. This is the stage upon which the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/nex-5">NEX-5</a> enters, with Sony predictably aiming to outdo everyone using an ultraslim magnesium alloy body that delivers 1080p video and 14 megapixel stills. Join us after the break to see what we thought of the Japanese giant's latest product.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-preview/">Sony NEX-5 preview</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-preview/#3088245"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynex-5p7025_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-preview/#3088290"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynex-5p7068_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-preview/#3088291"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynex-5p7069_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-preview/#3088292"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynex-5p7070_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-preview/#3088273"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynex-5p7051_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-versus-nikon-d5000-shot-with-another-nex-5/">Sony NEX-5 versus Nikon D5000 (shot with another NEX-5)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-versus-nikon-d5000-shot-with-another-nex-5/#3088470"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynsamp5089_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-versus-nikon-d5000-shot-with-another-nex-5/#3088460"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynsamp5080_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-versus-nikon-d5000-shot-with-another-nex-5/#3088459"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynsamp5079_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-versus-nikon-d5000-shot-with-another-nex-5/#3088458"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynsamp5078_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-nex-5-versus-nikon-d5000-shot-with-another-nex-5/#3088457"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/10x0616sonynsamp5077_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/sony-nex-5-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony NEX-5 preview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/sony-nex-5-preview/">Sony NEX-5 preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 19:04:00 EST. Stock of Sony's premier new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/sonys-nex-3-nex-5-interchangeable-lens-cameras-get-reviewed/">compact system camera</a> is still pretty scarce on the ground, but British photography retailer Jessops has managed to round up a batch and is ready to ship you one right this minute. Provided, that is, that you're equipped with &pound;589 ($867) and a lusting for the silver variety of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/sony-nex-5-is-small-really-really-small-video/">NEX-5</a>. The swarthy variant and the kit that includes a 16mm pancake lens are not yet ready for their time in the spotlight, but you can pre-order them now as well. Or, should your needs not stretch to quite such stratospheric heights, peek out the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sonys-nex3-5-cameras-priced-june-release-date-leaked/">NEX-3</a>, which can already be had from US e-tailers at far saner <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/sony-alpha-nex-cameras-now-up-for-pre-order-start-at-549/">price tags</a>. See the mini shooter in-store after the break.<br />

Fujifilm's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/01/fujifilm-finepix-real-3d-w1-now-shipping-to-soon-to-be-disappoin/">REAL 3D W1</a> didn't exactly get the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/24/fujifilm-finepix-real-3d-w1-slammed-in-early-review-company-res/">warmest of welcomes</a>, but even today it remains one of the few point-and-shoots that can natively take 3D photographs. Here at NVIDIA's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Computex/">Computex</a> press conference, the company slid in this little nugget: Sony's new Alpha series of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/21/sony-intros-alpha-dslr-concepts-micro-four-thirds-model-include/">interchangeable lens compact cameras</a> are now compatible with NVIDIA's 3D image processing software (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-3d-pictures.html">3D Vision Photo Viewer</a>). You won't get your Alpha growing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/18/sony-working-on-3d-alpha-dslr-cameras/">a second lens</a> or anything (at least not <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/22/sony-confirms-plans-for-consumer-friendly-3d-cameras/">yet</a>), but any image you shoot with it can be post-processed as 3D thanks to the new partnership. Details beyond that were few and far between, but the company's obviously stoked to have Sony onboard. 'Course, with Sony's own <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/sony,3d">3D obsession</a>, we wouldn't be shocked to hear that every single one of the outfit's cameras will soon be on the three-dee bandwagon in some form or another.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/31/nvidia-bringing-3d-images-to-sonys-alpha-camera-lineup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NVIDIA bringing 3D images to Sony's Alpha camera lineup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/31/nvidia-bringing-3d-images-to-sonys-alpha-camera-lineup/">NVIDIA bringing 3D images to Sony's Alpha camera lineup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 31 May 2010 05:25:00 EST. Sony hasn't seen fit to fully announce the successor to its current entry-level Alpha model, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/a230">A230</a>, but <em>Tinhte</em> forum member dt0306 has posted what looks to be conclusive proof of its existence -- not to mention shots at every angle and detailed specs. This re-designed model now packs a 14 megapixel CCD with a BIONZ image processor, along with the same maximum 3200 ISO, 2.7-inch LCD, and 2.5fps maximum shooting speed of the A230. Storage is handled by Memory Stick or SDHC, and there's even a price mentioned: 9,990,000 VND, or about $530 including the 18 - 55mm lens that the A230 comes mated to. There's no telling what the domestic MSRP will really be whenever this kit releases here, but we're not sure that a couple of extra megapixels and a new body warrants much of a premium.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/14/sonys-entry-level-a290-dslr-smiles-for-the-camera/">Sony's entry-level A290 DSLR smiles for the camera</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 14 May 2010 10:03:00 EST. Listen, you've had enough time to think on it -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sonys-nex3-5-cameras-priced-june-release-date-leaked/">just over 24 hours</a>, to be less imprecise -- and now it's time to make a monetary decision on Sony's Alpha <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NEX3/">NEX-3</a> / 5 interchangeable lens cameras. Pre-orders are now being accepted via the online Sony Style store; each camera comes as a kit with either the 16mm lens, or for an extra $50 the 18-55mm. Thus, we're looking at a minimum of $549.99 for the NEX-3 with 16mm, up to a penny under $700 for the NEX-5 with the more versatile eye. Lenses aren't yet sold separately, so make your choice wisely, and while you can gawk at the accessories -- optical viewfinder, A-mount lens adapter, and stereo mic, among others -- they're not yet taking your credit card details for anything but the kit right now. What's that... you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/sony-teases-high-end-camcorder-with-exmore-apc-hd-sensor-and-int/">wanted the camcorder</a>? Keep dreaming, for now.<br />

It looks like Sony's having a field day right now in Japan, making its official reveal of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/26/sony-gives-nex3-and-nex5-names-to-its-first-ultra-compact-interc/">NEX3 and NEX5</a> cameras, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/21/sony-intros-alpha-dslr-concepts-micro-four-thirds-model-include/">"ultra-compact" DSLRs with interchangeable lenses</a> we saw back at PMA. The presentation is going on as we speak, and the rumor sites seem to suggest <em>Digital Photography School</em> posted (and subsequently pulled) a review of the NEX3. <em>Quesabesde</em>, however, still has its preview of the not-quite-<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/microfourthirds/">Micro Four Thirds</a> shooters live, and is also listing some specs and prices. First with the technical details: the NEX3 has a 14.2 megapixel sensor, support for Memory Stick and SDXC media, 720p / 30fps video, and an articulating 2.95-inch LCD. The NEX5 boasts AVCHD 1080i video, and we're not sure yet as to other differences between the pair. As for pricing, the bodies on their lonesome appear to be worth about &euro;250 and &euro;350, respectively -- that's $320 and $448 in US currency. Throw in a 16mm f2.8 lens for &euro;250 and you're now looking at a minimum of &euro;500 (or $640) to join the fray. The kits are said to be going on sale in June. Sony's official site hasn't updated yet, but with any luck we'll get the legit scoop in very short time.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Sony <a href="http://presscentre.sony.eu/content/Detail.aspx?ReleaseID=5880&amp;NewsAreaID=2">made it official</a>, says a firmware update will be released this summer to capture stereoscopic 3D sweep panoramas. <br />
