We're all out of flabbergast over here. Sony Ericcson's still unannounced PlayStation-branded smartphone -- the "Xperia Play," or "PlayStation Phone" to us normal folks -- now appears in a commercial that found its way to YouTube. Beyond showing the (usually adorable) Android mascot having human thumbs sewn onto its arms, the advert depicts an unknown fighting game and two Gameloft titles. The two Gameloft titles -- a racing game and a space combat game -- look an awful lot like entries in the publisher's Asphalt and Star Battalion franchises. Check out the creepy commercial after the break.

  • Sony Ericsson posts $247 million Q4 loss, isn't looking forward to Q1 2009

Sony Ericsson's had a rough couple of months (along with just about everybody else), and things certainly aren't looking any more stellar in Q4. The outfit has just posted a fourth-quarter drop in net income of €187 million, or just south of $248 million. That figure becomes all the more striking when you consider that it showed profits of €373 million in the same period last year. As expected, the company blamed the "global economic slowdown" for the contracting demand, though it did say that the previously announced €300 million cost savings initiative was still on track. President Dick Komiyama noted that he still sees "continued deterioration in the market place in 2009, particularly in the first half," giving us all reason to believe that similar sadness will be emitted from its Q1 / Q2 2009 reports. Still, we'd argue that things could turn around quick, fast and in a hurry if it figures out a way to get Android onto a shipping handset. We all know SE's got the design angle down -- toss a decent OS on there and you've got a winner.[Via mocoNews]

  • Sony Ericsson M610i "Lizy" sees FCC approval

So is it the "Elena" or the "Lizy?" We'd previously though that Sony Ericsson's upcoming M610i bore the "Elena" codename, but the FCC filing for this sucker just came through with "Lizy" plastered all over it. No bother; the important thing is the device itself, which seems to be a promising upgrade to the M600 and will probably slot in right under the recently-announced P1 in Sony Ericsson's UIQ-based smartphone lineup. Highlights include a triband UMTS radio (no 850 -- surprise, surprise), Bluetooth, WiFi, and that love-it-or-hate-it QWERTY keypad rocker buttons to access letters. No word on release or pricing just yet, but we figure we can't be too far off from an official announcement.[Via Unwired View]

  • Sony Ericsson Ai pictures: the non-fuzzy edition

It's practically a foregone conclusion that the first shots of anything these days just have to sport the most atrocious quality possible, as anything better would just ruin the mystique and allure. Running par for the course, the first snapshot we saw of Sony Ericsson's presumably forthcoming "Ai" thinphone looked more like a smattering of pixels than an actual image, but we've now found a few pictures that confirm the general shape, size, and layout. While we're not sure if the firm will stick with the "Ai" moniker, there's word that it could be marketed as a Chocolate-rivaling Walkman (W880i?), but time shall tell. Be sure to hit the read link for a few more shots.

  • Sony Ericsson V630i 3G musicphone shows up in UK

Sony Ericsson keeps cranking out the high-style musicphones, and the V630i looks to be the latest edition to the line -- for UK Vodafone customers, that is. The phone, which eschews the Walkman branding used in other recent music-centric models, includes 10MB of internal memory, Memory Stick Micro support, a 176x220 display, 2 megapixel camera, trimode GSM support, and A2DP for Bluetooth stereo output. In sum, it reminds us a lot of another recent Sony Ericsson, the W810i, which has a similar feature set, but lacks A2DP (and that alone, of course, makes this one a new fave). [Thanks, Goku]

Sony Ericsson has yet another Walkman phone lined up for Q3 launch with the W710 clam for active types. As such, the W710 features a motion sensor and slew of fitness applications which can be managed from both the internal 176 x 220 TFT and 128 x 128 external STN displays to measure running speed, distance and time, or simply count steps back and forth to the Twinkie source. It ships with a 512MB Memory Stick Micro card (expandable up to 1GB) and features a standard 3.5mm jack, RDS FM radio, 2 megapixel shooter, MusicID service, Bluetooth (A2DP stereo audio not specified), and measure in at about 1-inch thick and 3.6-ounces. And just in case you'll be using it to make calls, it goes quad-band GSM with EDGE support meaning this device is also a US athletic supporter. More snaps after the break.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sony just announced their new W850 Walkman cellphone and this baby's hot. Available in black or white as designs tend to go these days, this tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 slider also delivers UMTS 2100. It comes pre-loaded with the latest Walkman 2.0 player with TrackID allowing you to lookup and identify recorded music samples via the Gracenote Mobile MusicID service. Not only that, but it ships with a 1GB of Memory Strick PRO Duo'in storage (with up to 4GB supported) and features a horizontal mode 2 megapixel shooter with LED light. Rounding out the features are a 2-inch QVGA TFT 260k color display, RDS FM Stereo radio, and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP stereo audio. No price but we can expect these to ship sometime Q3 2006... in Europe. More pics after the break.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
