The 2013 VGX show provided more than 1 million people with entertainment and/or fodder for Twitter jokes and angry forum posts, depending on who you talk to. According to a Polygon interview with Executive Vice President of Digital Media for Viacom Entertainment Group Erik Flannigan, Executive Vice President of Event Production Casey Patterson, and show host Geoff Keighley, the show "exceeded expectations," despite an abundance of negative responses. "There was a lot of great feedback that came out of it," Keighley told Polygon. "Sure, there were people calling for the date and time of my suicide, but there were people who also were saying very constructive things about the show." Keighley said that he believes such feedback is reflective of a passionate audience. Flannigan meanwhile said that apathy would have been "death" for the show. People from 109 countries tuned in to view the three-hour long VGX, with the average viewer spending 32 minutes watching. We imagine that was long enough to catch at least one snarky comment about how many layers of clothing Keighley was wearing from co-host Joel McHale.

Despite ending with musical performances that closely resembled a form of torture, the Spike VGX show packed some decent surprises! Joel McHale and Geoff Keighley endured four three hours of nonstop programming, and they only seemed to want to murder each other a handful of times. Let's recap everything that was shown: Telltale Games' success with the first season of The Walking Dead seems to have granted them a Golden Key to any partnership they desire. Naturally, they've revealed Tales From The Borderlands, a collaboration with Gearbox Software that will be set in the Borderlands universe. They've also started work on a Game of Thrones series, which will be based off the HBO show. Both projects are slated for 2014. Cranky Kong has had it with these youngsters and their rambunctious romps through jungles, so much so that he's decided to chase them all as the fourth playable character in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Cranky must have gotten a few good strikes in with his cane for that delay, too, because the Kong family has settled on braving the Wii U's incoming frost on February 21. Titanfall had already shown a decent arsenal for blowing up buildings with, but in case you doubted its capabilities, Respawn Entertainment debuted two new mech types tonight. Aside from the Titans, Ogre and Stryder mechs will spread destruction across Titanfall's cityscapes. Ogres will be slow, clunky and powerful, while Stryders will focus on outrunning everyone on the field. Hello Games, the developer of the Joe Danger series, brought along the show's biggest surprise - No Man's Sky is a procedurally generated, exploration-focused sci-fi game planned for 2014. The game's trailer showcased vivid landscapes before blasting its way through asteroids in spacecrafts.

The Stryder class titan will be stridin' across your Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC when Titanfall lands on all three systems on March 11, 2014. This lithe and shapely mech outperforms every other class of bipedal death machine in speed and mobility but it lacks the heavier armor of other classes.

    12.07.2013

A secondary type of mech to the Titans, the heavy-plated Ogre, was revealed for Titanfall during Spike's VGX show. Ogres are a little heavier and slower in movement, but when you're waging war with jetpacks and mechs falling from the sky, options are good! When questioned about a beta, Vince Zampella explained that Respawn Entertainment is "thinking about it." Respawn's debut effort for the new IP will be exclusive to the PC and Xbox platforms "for the life of the title." Titanfall's raging, acrobatic firefights will be open to all once the game titanfalls onto the PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on March 11. While that means there won't be a PS4 version of Titanfall, Respawn has clarified that they intend to bring other projects to the PS4.

As an ad on Spike's VGX site suggested earlier today, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is scheduled for a shipwreck on the PS4 and Xbox One in January 28. The Definitive Edition will include improved visuals, including TressFX, and all of the previously released multiplayer DLC. It will not support 3D visuals like the PC version. Definitive Edition is a collaborative effort between Crystal Dynamics, Nixxes and United Front Games. It's also already available for pre-order on Amazon. Ports of this year's Tomb Raider reboot were hinted at last month when Xbox One and PS4 versions were listed on Brazil's rating board. At that time, Amazon Italy also briefly hosted a PS4 listing for the Definitive Edition.

Telltale is working on a crossover project with Gearbox Software that takes place in the Borderlands universe. Like other Telltale games, this will be an episodic series where the storyline is defined by player choices. Gearbox is providing assets, but the development is all Telltale. Telltale has created new characters for this game; they're not quite Vault Hunters, and a male character shown bares more than a passing resemblance to Borderlands 2 villain Handsome Jack. Coincidence? We'll find out in 2014.

  • Spike 2013 VGAs show gets a date, new name

    by

    11.15.2013

This year's Spike VGAs graces our screens and our hearts on December 7, the same date it aired last year. Not everything's the same as it was last year, however, because as Spike host Geoff Keighley revealed, the awards show/trailer fest is now called VGX. As for the why of the name change... we don't know. It could be due to the show's "expanded digital footprint" as noted by Keighley. Or maybe it'll be extra exciting? Perhaps X-rated? Maybe it'll have a sister show called VGY? Your guess is as good as ours (or much better.) There's no word on the nominations, who's hosting (Samuel Jackson took the reins last year), and which awkward celebrity cameos to expect. In any case, two new consoles should make for an eventful billing, and we'll be sure to cover all the major news from the night.
