With all the holiday hype surrounding new MMOs, it's easy to overlook veteran titles like EverQuest II. SOE is doing its part to make sure that you don't, and one of the ways the team is keeping the six-year old title in the public eye is the introduction of the new Freeblood character race. The blood-sucking avatars are available for purchase from the Station marketplace, or if you have a little patience, as part of your subscription fee via the winter rewards program coming in February. Regardless of when you choose to roll your vampire, you'll get a bunch of new abilities, new unarmed combat animations, and access to Freeblood-only accessories like new housing and a speed-boosting bat shapeshift ability. These accessories aren't obtainable in-game and can only be purchased with Station Cash on a Freeblood-enabled account.

Sony's Account management and Commerce systems, Station Store and CSG store are all shutting down later this-morning to add Mastercard/Visa Securecode support to payment and billing systems. All the game servers will remain up, but the outage window for account, billing and payment services is only approximate at about four hours from 9AM US Pacific time today, Tuesday 4 March. The securecode system has come under some criticism for lending itself to phishing scams, and indeed there have been some attempts to target cardholders with such scams since the program's introduction. At the end of the day, we're not actually sure if Securecode will make your accounts and cards more secure, but a correct implementation of the system will leave Sony Online Entertainment less liable in the event of fraudulent transactions.

A lot of people out there prefer not to have an ongoing direct debit from their bank accounts for game subscriptions, and this crowd will be pleased to know that there are now 30-day game cards available for Pirates of the Burning Sea. The cards can be used on a new or existing PotBS account, and this sort of thing is also a great gift for MMO-inclined friends -- or for convincing the reluctant ones to try the game out with you. 30-day game cards cost USD$14.99 and can be purchased from Sony's Station store.
