Mobile developer flaregames is co-developing its take on tower defense series Fieldrunners after signing a deal with its creator, Subatomic Studios. Flaregames CEO Klass Kersting told PocketGamer the follow-up is in early development, but he added the team will "stay true to the brand and help create a fun game that both hardcore fans of the two original games, as well as new players, will love." Kersting said the existing Fieldrunners games still collectively see hundreds of thousands of daily activities from their playerbase. Subatomic's original Fieldrunners effort also won Best Art and Best Mobile Game awards at the IGF Mobile Awards in 2009 and followed lanes to the DS and PSP, so flaregames' adaptation has a bit of a reputation to live up to. Since its emergence on the App store in June, Fieldrunners 2 has been quite the success for developer Subatomic Studios, surpassing $1 million in sales back in September. Today, the lauded tower-defense game jogs onto Steam. For the big Steam debut today, Subatomic Studios has knocked a buck off the asking price for Fieldrunners 2, bringing it down to $9. The original Fieldrunners launched back in 2008 and quickly established itself atop the iOS App store, eventually being ported to a whole bunch of other platforms. It would seem Fieldrunners 2 is destined to repeat that walk on the road to success.

  • Fieldrunners 2 surpasses $1 million in sales, Subatomic defends premium App Store pricing

Fieldrunners 2 recently broke $1 million in sales, about a month and half since launch. The original Fieldrunners by Subatomic Studios launched during the infancy of the iOS App Store nearly four years ago and was a runaway hit, eventually being ported to several platforms. It wasn't a sure bet by Subatomic that a sequel would do well, given the increased competition in the marketplace now and, particularly, at the premium price of $2.99 for the iPhone version and $7.99 on iPad."These high price points have generated a lot of criticism," Alec Shobin, marketing manager at Subatomic, told Joystiq. "But when I explain our strategy to fans, they always understand our situation. Fieldrunners 2 was made over the course of two years by a team of about 20 people. When I explain that we have to go with premium prices because we want to cover our costs in order to continue making super high quality games for a niche, hardcore audience, it really clicks with them and makes them want to support our cause."Shobin notes Fieldrunners 2 launched and immediately became the second-highest paid app on the US App Store. What he thinks is more important is the game reached number eight in the top-grossing category without being free-to-play nor having in-app purchases.

The sequel to one of the iPhone's first big hits, Fieldrunners, is now available on the App Store. Fieldrunners 2 is a really impressive update to the genre of tower defense. You'll find brand-new Retina Display graphics, over 20 different towers (some completely new to the genre), twenty new levels and different modes like Sudden Death, Time Trial, and Puzzle levels, and lots and lots of great new features. Levels can now have bridges and tunnels for some interesting strategic choices, and Subatomic has kindly now painted out the path of the Fieldrunners, so you can focus in on killing them, and much less on worrying about that sneaky little bit of pathfinding you missed. Fieldrunners was a great game, and Fieldrunners 2 is even more amazing -- it's a high quality sequel that fans of the first game should download without a second thought. The app is $2.99 for the iPhone right now. Unfortunately, there's no iPad version out yet, but it should be coming soon.

Subatomic Studios, the makers of one of the iPhone's biggest early titles, Fieldrunners, have announced that a sequel is headed our way as soon as next month. The popular tower defense title is being updated with twenty new hand-painted levels, twenty towers (including a Link tower, which seems to be two towers with a deadly attack between them, as well as both a Nuke and a Railgun tower, for AoE or sniper damage, respectively). And there are two new game modes, to go along with the standard survival and time trial maps, there are now puzzle and sudden death maps to play as well. It sounds like a great title -- if you've been playing iPhone games since the beginning, you'll probably have fond memories of Fieldrunners. Fieldrunners 2 will arrive on the iPhone at the end of June, with an iPad version coming soon after.

Previously confined to the Amazon Appstore, Fieldrunners HD is now available via the Android Market. The title launched on the Amazon Appstore with promotional pricing, an offer that evidently required it be exclusive to the service for two weeks. Those two weeks are up so, if you've yet to experience the popular tower defense title, it can be had for $2.99.

Just in time for the Fourth of July fireworks, Subatomic Studios is bringing its hit iOS tower defense title Fieldrunners to Android -- and it'll be a buck on day one. The Cambridge, Mass. based developer has announced that the $2.99 price for its game will be cut to $.99 on Thursday, June 30, which is when it arrives on the Android Market. From July 1 on, it's full price. (Note: The press release, which says the game is free during the first 24 hours, is incorrect.) As its title suggests, Fieldrunners HD has undergone a visual upgrade for Android devices, with all its art assets getting a fresh coat of 950x540 resolution paint. Other than that, the game looks to be a facsimile of its previous iterations on iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad -- all of which were great. You don't need to be a West Point graduate to realize that grabbing this gem on day one is the winning strategy.

The European PlayStation Blog has announced that iPhone mega-hit Fieldrunners will be a PSP Minis launch title on October 1. The tower defense game went straight to the top of the App Store charts (and won an IGF mobile award) for its intuitive design and beautiful visual style, which appears to have made the trip over to PSP -- along with new maps and towers. No word from Sony America on whether the game will make it onto the next PSN update in the States or not. We've been told the next update will be gigantic because of the PSP Go's launch, so keep an eye out for an earlier-than-usual PSN Thursday and the mega update.

Several games took home honors at this morning's Independent Games Festival's Mobile awards ceremony, but the event's true winner was apparent: the iPhone. While the awards were geared towards -- and open to -- titles for all wireless / mobile devices, every game that won is available exclusively on Apple's telephonic wunderkind (and, of course, the iPod touch). Subatomic Studios' tower defense favorite, Fieldrunners, won for Best Art and Best Mobile Game (overall). Sergei Gourski and Jamie Gotch (above), the two developers responsible for the game, have been viewed as rising stars in the indie mobile gaming scene since Fieldrunners' release; today's wins cemented their star status. We spoke with the duo about their award-winning creation -- look for the full interview soon on the 'Stiq. Two awards also went to Secret Exit for its sublime Zen Bound. The part game, part relaxation exercise was named Best iPhone Game and earned a Mobile Audio Achievement award. The Best Innovation award went to the simplistic, yet infinitely replayable 4x4 space strategy title, Galcon. The only unreleased game to win was Firemint's Real Racing, which earned Best Technical honors. We'll have a hands-on with the impressive looking (hey, it won the tech award for a reason) racer soon.
