Capcom announced today that the 3D Edition of Super Street Fighter IV has shipped one million units globally. The robust 3DS title was well-received when it launched, thanks to its showcsing of the handheld's functionality and adherence to the game's fightin' spirit. With that type of success, the publisher isn't slowing its support for Nintendo's latest handheld, having previously announced Mega Man Legends 3 and two Resident Evil titles: The Mercenaries 3D and Revelations. %Gallery-114648%

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition is an incredible technical achievement on Capcom's part. It's unmistakably the console Super Street Fighter IV, with all the characters, moves, sounds, silly faces, and OH! MY CAR bonus stages, but on a handheld. It's got every mode from the console games, including the online play, and a few new ones. In fact, I could only come up with one major, identifiable problem, and you already know what it is.%Gallery-114648%

The North American launch details for Nintendo 3DS have been finalized. In addition to Face Raiders and AR Games, both pre-installed on the hardware, the system will launch with three first-party games: Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver, and nintendogs + cats. Each first-party game has a suggested retail price of $39.99. Thirteen third-party games will be available on March 27th, including Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition and Rayman 3D. Nintendo promises that thirty games will be available for the platform by E3 expo. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising and a new Mario Kart game will all be available before year's end. You'll find the complete launch lineup listed after the break.

Any fighter out there will tell you, sometimes you just gotta get down in them streets. It's a primal calling, originating deep from within and taking hold until its nigh-bottomless desire for wins is satiated. If the thought of that is starting to send a shiver down your spine, ready to turn you into a whirling dervish of dragon punches and kikoshos, know that you're likely in a place where you aren't allowed to do that. With, like, delicate furniture and stuff. But you've still got an itch and we wanna help you scratch it. How does an eccentric European marketing stunt sound? It's a live-action bout between Ken and Ryu, meant to demonstrate the lifelike 3D quality of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. While we can't comment on that, we will say we've always been suckers when it comes to dudes dressing up like Ken and Ryu and fake-fighting for our amusement. C'est la vie!

Shortly after Nintendo's 3DS event, Capcom released an English version of the Nintendo World 2011 Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition trailer, along with new gameplay footage -- both of which you can see after the break. More importantly, however, is the assertion that it will be "available as a launch title for the Nintendo 3DS." That makes Super Street Fighter IV the first known launch title in North America! We'd like to pretend it's the only launch title, which would make it really easy for us to find other SSF4 owners to play it with. Capcom also says that the online features will be available from launch, making it "the only title to utilize the full capabilities of Nintendo's online network at launch." Said features include online multiplayer and a Spectator Mode that allows users to watch other online fights. Other new features include a 3D display mode, "Simple Controls" that use the touchscreen to launch combos, and StreetPass-based multiplayer that uses virtual figurines, which automatically fight other figurines they encounter via local wireless connections.%Gallery-114648%

  • 3DS 'launch window' to include more than 30 games leading up to E3

Did you hear? It's got a built-in pedometer! The 3DS measures your steps as you walk -- right there in your pocket! Even better: You can pull the thing out whenever and snap all kinds of pics -- the thing's got three cameras! And get this: It also pipes out music, browses the internet and even plays games. True, you've already got a pile of old DS games (and now defunct DS devices) that you could be playing on your new pedometer, but more than 30 three-DEE titles are expected to be released during the 3DS "launch window" (which begins March 27 and promptly closes on June 7 with the start of E3). We've listed 24 of the apparent launch-window releases after the break (though Nintendo's being coy about exact dates), including Nintendo's own Nintendogs + cats and Pilotwings Resort, plus a hearty helping of third-party support; with notable newcomers, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (previously unannounced outside of Japan) and Crush 3D, a possible port of the 2007 PSP platforming puzzler from Sega. Don't look at the date ambiguity in dismay -- see it as an opportunity! Beginning in late March, you can walk to and from GameStop in anticipation of a new batch of games each Tuesday for ten whole weeks, and the 3DS will count your steps -- each and every one of them! And just imagine how many Street Passes you're going to rack up?

In case you missed the Nintendo World 2011 trailer for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Capcom Japan posted it to its own YouTube channel for easy viewing in HD ... not that the game's actually in HD. The trailer shows off the "3D View" option, which tilts the camera such that your character's back is to the camera, for dramatic 3D effect. It also introduces the manifold multiplayer options, including local, StreetPass-based, online, and even the passive Channel Live, wherein you just watch other people's matches. And, of course, there's good old-fashioned fightin' footage.

Fight fans looking for some portable pugilism take note: Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition will have online multiplayer support. Word comes via G4, which spoke with Capcom's Yoshinori Ono at last week's Nintendo World event. There will be two different types of online multiplayer in the game: worldwide online play and Channel Live. The former is pretty self-explanatory (this is the place you go to fight people from all over the world), while the latter is a place to go to watch live matches. Of course, there are also the figurine-collecting and random street fighting modes, which were previously announced.

Super Monkey Ball 3D won't arrive in time for the 3DS launch in Japan on February 26, but it will only miss that Monkey Target narrowly. Sega announced today that the three-dimensional ape tumbler will be released in Japan on March 3. You can see a few new screens, including the GonGon portrait above, on Famitsu. Also on Famitsu are new screenshots of Tobidasu! Puzzle Bobble 3D, which feature some really nice 2D art, and a few new screens of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. We've posted the box art after the break, so you can get a nice look at the crazy backwards design.

  • Super Street Fighter IV 3DS features the one-touch Shoryuken

The 3DS has a touch screen instead of an arcade-spec joystick, which makes it a bit less than optimal for fighting games like Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. But in bringing the fighter to 3DS, Capcom has done its best to concoct a little touch-screen-ade. The game's website details the touch screen implementation, which allows players to assign their choice of moves to four sections of the screen. You can set things like Focus Attacks, special moves, Ultra Combos, or combinations of three simultaneous button presses, according to the examples shown. Capcom has been known to make concessions like this for systems without ideal fighting game controllers. SNK vs. Capcom EO on GameCube allowed players to launch special moves by pressing directions on the right stick, for example, and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom had optional simplified controls for use with the Wiimote and Nunchuk.

Capcom released a new trailer for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, allowing us a much less brief look at what Super Street Fighting looks like on a 3DS. The trailer reveals two new features, both of which take advantage of the advanced wireless communication features in the system. "Figure Collection" mode allows players to collect fighter figurines, which engage in automatic battles whenever two 3DSes with Street Fighter data come into contact. The winner in each match wins the opponent's figure. The other feature is more traditional, but also more awesome. If you happen to come across another SSFIV player while you have the game running, you'll be able to jump automatically into a versus battle ... which means you could literally fight someone you met on a street.

  • Capcom not planning to launch 3DS games in this fiscal year

    08.03.2010

Capcom's investor Q&A for the last fiscal quarter doesn't just look back on the company's recent stumbles -- it also includes some info about the publisher's plans for the rest of the year and beyond. For example, the launch of its two announced 3DS games, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition and Resident Evil: Revelations, belong in the "beyond" category. "We broke the news at E3 2010 that development is underway for Resident Evil: Revelations (tentative title) and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition," the publisher said in the Q&A, "but we do not expect these titles to be ready for release this fiscal year." Capcom added that we "we haven't set any specific dates at this time." The current fiscal year ends in March 2011. That means that Capcom is likely to miss the 3DS launch window by at least a little, though these two major franchises are still likely to excite audiences a few months into the system's lifespan.

  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition vs. Street Fighter IV on iPhone: FIGHT!

    07.29.2010

Capcom opened a site for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, its upcoming 3DS Street Fighter game, featuring several new screenshots. We thought we'd take the opportunity to compare the graphics in this handheld version to the existing Street Fighter IV on iPhone. However, there's not much of a comparison. The iPhone Street Fighter uses pre-rendered 2D sprites based on the console/arcade game's 3D models, for a look reminiscent of Killer Instinct. The 3DS game, on the other hand, appears to use lower-detail versions of the actual 3D models, judging by the dynamic camera angles. That's why you get to see the extreme close-up of Ken's goofy punch face up there. Of course, it's worth noting that these are early screenshots, and the final game may come out looking different. Given the relatively low texture detail, though, this looks like something that could be possible on a handheld system. Compare the two games yourself in our galleries. %Gallery-98483% %Gallery-86253%

  • Ono: Super Street Fighter IV for 3DS won't alter gameplay

    07.28.2010

According to producer Yoshinori Ono, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition on the Nintendo 3DS won't offer radically different gameplay. In a Famitsu interview summarized by Andriasang, Ono assured fans that, among other things, the 3D visuals won't lead to 3D gameplay (turn to Tekken X Street Fighter for that.) "The gameplay will be the same as Super Street Fighter IV," he said. There might be some additional control options, however. The article states that the team is considering mapping special attacks to the slide pad or touch screen. He also suggested that Capcom wants to use the system's wireless connectivity for both communication and gameplay, though he didn't specify whether he meant online or local wireless. According to Famitsu, the game will have all 35 Super Street Fighter IV characters, and is currently 10 percent complete. %Gallery-95709%
