T-Mobile coaxing unlocked iPhone users to its network with Value Plan push, aggressive in-store service
If, like T-Mobile, you're one of the few major US networks that doesn't carry the iPhone, there's a few stages you have to go through. First comes the heavy-handed hints, then you pull a racy leather number from the wardrobe before declaring that you're fine without it and never wanted the thing anyway. Now it's hit stage four -- throwing caution to the wind and inviting users to bring their unlocked handset into stores and sign up for its $70-a-month (amongst others) unlimited plan anyway. From September 12th, iPhone 4S display units will be rolled out in stores, with helpful sales staff around to swap out your AT&T microSIM for one of its own. You'll also be able to get hold of network-specific apps like myAccount, Visual Voicemail and T-Mobile TV as soon as they're ready. In order to make this marvel possible, it's rolling out 1900MHz HSPA+ access to allow customers access to its "faux-G" service -- which is one way of enticing you away from upgrading to whatever's coming on Wednesday.
T-Mobile provides support, good vibes to its iPhone-using clientele
Despite not being its official US carrier, T-Mobile still seems to wanna maintain an amicable relationship with all those who came over with an iPhone in tow. According to a report by The Consumerist, a recent update to the carrier's voicemail system caused some of the smartphones, including Apple's touchscreens, became unusable, with a volley of blank text messages dated from the future arriving instead. Those who contacted customer service were called later to acknowledge the issue and offered an one month service credit. Said the rep, "T-Mobile, though they do not offer the iPhone, and that they are committed to supporting users on their network who have them" -- not too surprising a stance, but a kind gesture for sure. T-Mobile set to be Europe's exclusive iPhone carrier?
With the Apple iPhone set for release in the U.S. next month (with AT&T), which non-U.S. mobile carriers will be the first to get some Apple mobile lovin'? According to the churning rumor mill, T-Mobile has secured a pretty solid seat in the running to be the first European carrier for the iPhone, but Vodafone is in hot pursuit as well. T-Mobile may have the leg up, according to Gartner research, since the iPhone's iTunes would possibly clash with Vodafone's Live! portal. The bigger question is whether Apple wants to limit itself to one initial carrier in Europe, since that market and the U.S. wireless market are completely different beasts.
