It may not be hitting consoles until sometime this fall, but Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has been in Japanese arcades since September of last year, which in fighting game terms is a hundred billion years. The next step in the fighting game chain of evolution is, of course, the upgraded/altered/enhanced version, and thus Tekken Unlimited Tag Tournament 2 is born.Unveiled during this year's AOU Amusement Expo in Japan, Tekken Unlimited Tag Tournament 2 allows for 2-on-2 battles like the original TTT2, but also 1-on-1 fighting like traditional Tekken games, as well as 1-on-2 fighting. The game's character balance has been adjusted to ensure that 1-on-2 battles are mechanically fair, according to Andriasang. Arcade owners who have already purchased Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be able to upgrade to Unlimited free of charge. Let's hope these additions and improvements are reflected in this fall's console release.

It's good to know that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will continue the Tekken series' tradition of being completely and uncontrollably bonkers. Winged wrestlers? Fancy-dress kangaroos? Dragon Ball nimbus clouds? Yup, this is Tekken all right. See if you can spot the homage to Blazblue's Noel Vermillion.

Before this year's Spike TV Video Game Awards properly started, the event's pre-show debuted a live-action, non-gameplay trailer for Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Aside from being well choreographed and remarkably stylish, the trailer offers little insight into the title other than the fact that it will be coming to unknown consoles sometime during the 2012 holiday season. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is already out in Japanese arcades, and five select North American arcades across the country.

"But wait," we hear you say from the other side of the Internet. "Isn't the American arcade scene dead? Haven't coin-op establishments gone the way of the dodo? What kind of fool do you take me for? Hey I'm talkin' to you!" Chill, friend! It's true that the American arcade is not as prolific as it once was, but the scene is far from dead. In fact, the U.S. of A.'s fighting game community has gone to great lengths to preserve its arcade heritage, and the scene is doing so well that Namco Bandai will be testing the latest entry in the Tekken series across our amber waves of grain. Announced during Northeast Championship XII, the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 field test will take place in 5 different arcades across the nation: Next Level Arcade in New York City, Round One Entertainment in City of Industry, CA, Super Arcade in Walnut, CA, Fun Works in Honolulu, HI and Arcade UFO in Austin, TX. As Austin is positively bursting with Joystiq editors, we'll be keeping an eye out for scheduling information as it becomes available. For now, we're just going to sit back and daydream about punching a robot with a bear. Mmmmm, satisfying.

  • Deja Review: Tekken Hybrid

We're of the firm opinion that your time is too precious, too valuable to be spent reading a full review for a game that was already reviewed many, many years ago. What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games. "Woah, wait a second, Joystiq," you might be typing into the comments section of this review right this second, "how in the world can you do a Deja Review on something that's new like Tekken Hybrid?" Well, it's simple: Tekken Hybrid is mostly old stuff. Parts of it are new, but the most substantial offering in the package is a PS2 launch title which has had a face lift. I should preface this all by saying I'm a pretty big Tekken fan. I've been playing the series since it existed and the original Tekken Tag Tournament is responsible for one of my favorite memories as a human being. But, for most fighting game fans, you've either been with the franchise for a while or you've got your reasons for not giving Tekken a chance. Don't expect Tekken Hybrid to sway that opinion. %Gallery-129093%

  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 crowns the King of Japanese Arcades on Sept. 14

Japan will receive the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 arcade cabinets on September 14, with an international launch loosely slated for late September at the earliest. Now that we've gotten the easy stuff out of the way, here's the hard part: actually finding an arcade you can play this in. If you don't live in Japan, are you willing to take one expensive vacation just to play an arcade game? Of course, Namco's thinking about you stay-at-home types. You have plenty to look forward to in Tekken Hybrid, which not only includes the CG movie and an HD remake of the first Tekken Tag Tournament, but also an early taste of the sequel.

  • Ryu will have his hadouken in Tekken X Street Fighter

"Obviously, the Street Fighter characters will have to have their fireballs. Ryu without a fireball just wouldn't be ... right," Tekken game director Katsuhiro Harada told PlayStation Blog at EVO 2011 last weekend. "Obviously we'll need it." While Tekken X Street Fighter development is still in the earliest stages, the confirmation that characters will still be able to toss projectiles is curious. The only thing we've seen of the game so far has been a render of Ryu (above). Harada doesn't know exactly how projectiles will make their way into the game yet, but it doesn't stop him from hypothesizing on how fireballs will be implemented. Additionally, he provides some details on a handful of the other upcoming Tekken games, including character list talk for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue and an "85%" confirmation of stereoscopic 3D in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 -- all of which you can read about in the full interview through that Source link below!

When you buy the Tekken Hybrid set, you'll get an HD version of the first Tekken Tag Tournament for PS3. You'll also get a playable sample of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, producer Katsuhiro Harada announced at Comic-Con. Oh, and the Tekken Blood Vengeance movie, of course. The trailer shows Alisa and Xiaoyu, who will be playable in the "Prologue," fighting Devil, who hasn't been previously revealed as a character appearing in this game. And speaking of unconfirmed news, a console release still hasn't been announced for Tekken Tag 2 -- even though it now has a console demo. The Hybrid set will be out sometime in November, but if you have a hankering for a bite-sized Tekken Tag experience now, you can get Tekken Bowl on iPhone -- for free!%Gallery-129093%%Gallery-129091%%Gallery-129098%

Dead or Alive has always been lauded for its interactive stages, and it would seem Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is taking a page out of its playbook. A feature in the latest issue of Famitsu (via Andriasang) gives us word that the environmental interaction is being expanded in Tag 2. Like the crumbling floors seen in Tekken 6, players will be able to access entirely new areas of a stage by knocking opposing players through parts of the environment. A specific scenario is documented in the Famitsu piece, where one player knocks another through a wall, causing them to land in an entirely different part of the stage, where the attacker's partner is waiting to resume the assault. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 also brings back items, which has become a staple of the Tekken series in its most recent iterations. They won't just be cosmetic this time around, however -- two items mentioned are a baseball bat and a goofy hat with a hammer head jutting out from the face of it, both of which can be used in combat.

  • Interview: Katsuhiro Harada talks Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Just minutes ago, immediately following the Tougeki fighting game championship finals held during the Tokyo Game Show, Namco Bandai game director Katsuhiro Harada announced Tekken Tag Tournament 2, the first iteration in the Tekken Tag series since the 1999 debut over a decade ago. We had a chance to speak with Mr. Harada following this unveiling, and learned more about the long delay, the game's arcade destination, the current state of fighting games and what's going on with Tekken X Street Fighter. Joystiq: How long have you been working on Tekken Tag Tournament 2? Katsuhiro Harada: Actually there was some talk at first of doing this before Tekken 6 came out, but when we discussed it amongst ourselves and the team we felt like we first wanted to make a proper sequel to 6 to see how far we could push the limits of our graphics engine on that hardware before going to Tag. As you've seen for yourself in the trailer, we have three or four characters on the screen at once so that's simply twice as much power needed than previously for example in Tekken 6. So obviously trying to do that right off the bat earlier on would be much more difficult. If it's running on the same technology as 6, which came not only to arcades but to consoles, what are your console plans for Tag 2?

Attendees of the Tougeki fighting game tournament in Japan received a special surprise today. Namco Bandai unveiled a brand new Tekken game for Japanese arcades. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a follow-up to 1999's arcade original, updated with a new roster and a current-gen graphics engine. Neither a US nor console release have been announced at the time, but we're certain they're in the works. Even the debut trailer (after the break) states that "other region release dates are TBD." %Gallery-102650%
