We've known that Telltale Games - the developers behind sterling adventure game adaptations of The Walking Dead and Fables - is working on a Game of Thrones game for some time now, but that won't stop the studio from teasing fans with hints of what's to come. The image seen above recently graced the Telltale Games Twitter account alongside the phrase "...of IRONWOODS as old as the realm itself." While that's clearly part of a quote directly from the Game of Thrones novels, there's more to this image than a mere reference to its source material. This is where you come in, dear reader. Relying on your no doubt encyclopedic knowledge of George R.R. Martin's bloody fantasy world, we want you to offer your best interpretation of what exactly Telltale is showing us in the comments below. First person to say "it's a tree with a sword in it," wins only an eye-roll. [Image: Telltale Games]

Telltale's The Walking Dead seasons one and two will arrive on Xbox One and PS4 this month. That much we knew with certainty as of September. Now according to IGN, the first season will go next-gen on October 14 followed by the second season one week later, October 21. Xbox 360 and PS3 owners will get to enjoy each full season on October 21 as well. The release dates align with previous listings offered by Amazon. Those dates are for North American players; fans in Europe will have to wait a few extra days to receive both seasons on PS4 and Xbox One on October 24. Likewise, Vita players won't have access to the full second season until November 4. The adventure game series began with the launch of episode one in April 2012, and wrapped with the underwhelming fifth episode of Season 2 in late August. [Image: Telltale Games]

  • The Walking Dead Season 2, Episode 5 review: Exit wounds

This review covers the latest episode in an ongoing season, and may contain spoilers. Players of Telltale's The Walking Dead have offered a singular, echoing criticism throughout its first and second seasons: "My choices don't matter." Detractors claim that the story is set in concrete and only the journey changes – and even then just slightly. They decry the game's decision-making mechanics as shallow and containing a falsely advertised level of impact on the narrative. I've never had a problem with The Walking Dead's subtlety. Regardless of the differences among every person's experience, the game always told a deep, uneasy story packed with drama and action in equal measure. The narrative rode waves of tension, crashing down on important dialogue decisions and cresting up to harried firefights and split-second amputations. In the final episode of Season 2, "No Going Back," the detractors win. In this episode, your choices matter in the deepest way – altering how the story ends. Unfortunately, this means that the balanced narrative loses in a spectacular and surprising fashion.

The fifth and final episode of The Walking Dead Season Two launches for PC, Mac, PS3 and Vita on August 26 in North America, and then on Xbox 360 on August 27. Episode five hits iOS on August 28 as an in-app purchase. Episode five is titled "No Going Back" and it wraps up all of the bone-chilling insanity within Season Two so far. The trailer released today contains spoilers for seasons one and two of The Walking Dead, though Telltale promises no spoilers for episode five itself. It does, however, contain a heartbreaking home video of Clementine before the outbreak. Grab some tissues and see the trailer below. If you've been playing along this season, read our reviews of each episode under the Walking Dead home page. Episode four's review can be found here.

Destiny writer Joshua Rubin left Bungie for Telltale Games, announcing his departure via Twitter after two years with the developer. Rubin will be working on Telltale's take on the Game of Thrones franchise, and noted that the creators of the HBO television series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have "set an incredibly high standard for writing" and that Rubin is "inspired by their work every season." "In the end, Bungie makes games about shooting aliens in the head," Rubin told Gamasutra. "And while there's a true art to 'writing between the bullets' - as Mr. Staten once said - I couldn't turn down an offer from Telltale, to create games that are entirely about story." Telltale announced its spin on Game of Thrones in December during the VGX awards, just weeks after reports about the game surfaced. Destiny will launch September 9 for PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. [Image: Telltale Games]

The Walking Dead: Season 3 was confirmed yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con, much to the delight of fans and emotional masochists. We're not even sure how Clementine and co.'s travels will end in Season 2, but time - and the shuffling hordes of undead - wait for no man. Season 3 is coming, prepare while you can. Which ... might be awhile. Or not! We're not really sure, as no details regarding a release window were given. Oh, those darn zombies - so inconsiderate to not let us know when they plan on dropping by. [Image: Telltale Games]

  • The Walking Dead Season 2, Episode 4 review: Life and Death

    by
    Jessica Conditt

    07.22.2014

This review covers the latest episode in an ongoing season, and may contain minor spoilers. Death is better than zombification, but life is the best option of all. Even in a hellhole of a world; even with rotting corpses hunting you down every path, salivating for your flesh; even when you have to kill your friends every day – life is the better option. That's what "Amid the Ruins" teaches us. More than any previous episode of The Walking Dead, it throws the importance of life in our faces – the fragility of breathing, the futility of fighting, the need to do it anyway – and it makes us wish for life harder than we ever have. Not necessarily our own lives, either. Clementine, for her part, is capable and in charge in this episode. She's rarely in direct danger herself (at least not in any way she hasn't already conquered 50 times before), but she bears witness to the potential deaths of many others, multiple times over. She saves some people. She kills some people. And she survives. She lives.

Telltale Games confirmed today that its Fables-based adventure game series The Wolf Among Us will be collected in retail bundles for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 later this year. Telltale's confirmation follows up on the game's database appearances at GameStop, Best Buy, and GameFly, among other retailers. The series recently wrapped up on all available platforms with the release of its fifth and final episode, "Cry Wolf." A specific release date for the retail version of The Wolf Among Us was not announced. [Image: Telltale Games]

Episode 4 of The Walking Dead's second season is dubbed "Amid the Ruins," but we doubt it takes place in an ancient Mayan temple or anything like that. Two new screenshots from the episode depict tense, mid-battle scenes: One shows Clementine splattered in blood and wielding an axe while surrounded by zombies, and the other has her back-to-back with other survivors, pointing a gun at someone – and not looking very pleased about it. Amid the Ruins should be out this month. On today's photo feast, Telltale says to look out for news next week regarding the episode's launch. [Images: Telltale]

  • Telltale expects the next Walking Dead episode to hit this month

Up until today, we expected July to be made up of a more relaxing breed of decisions. We were thinking stuff like whether to go with hot dogs or BBQ chicken, which sports to melt in front of, and which unnecessarily flashy sunglasses to buy. Blissful, meaningless decisions. Then Telltale's Job Stauffer said the studio expects Season 2 Episode 4 of The Walking Dead to arrive this month, and all of a sudden we're faced with choices that have consequences. You know, it's very rare someone's suffered a gratuitously cruel death after we've plumped for the BBQ chicken. When we buy our Ray-Bans almost no-one gets left behind.

  • Telltale tells the tale of two tales in Tales from the Borderlands

    06.12.2014

Telltale's The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us have much in common. They're both based on comic books, they both feature some fairly bleak situations, and they both start with "The." Tales From the Borderlands, on the other hand, is based on an established video game series, is quite funny, and ... ok, it also has a "the," but it's near the end. It also has two playable characters: Rhys, the tech-using Hyperion employee, and Fiona, the steampunky grifter. After watching the first 30 minutes or so of the first of Tales' five episodes, I talked to Telltale's Richard Iggo about what else is different this time around. (Spoiler: Loot. Lots of loot.)

  • Tales From The Borderlands nets a nerdy voice cast

Tales From The Borderlands, the upcoming adventure game spin-off from the Borderlands series, will feature the voice talents of Nerdist's Chris Hardwick, developer Telltale Games revealed today. Hardwick's character, named Vaughn, is described as the best friend of Rhys, one of the game's primary protagonists. The promo art revealing Vaugh shows him with a scared expression, but what's there to be scared about? Pandora is just a planet overrun with insane robots, psychopathic bandits, telepathic mercenaries and giant monsters, after all. Other names attached to Tales From The Borderlands include Patrick Warburton (Family Guy) and Mr. Video Game Voice himself, Nolan North - or does that title go to Troy Baker now? Tales From The Borderlands is expected to make its debut sometime this summer. [Image: Telltale Games]

  • Zen Studios creating The Walking Dead pinball table

Zen Studios is developing a table inspired by Telltale Games' The Walking Dead series for its pinball games. The table will launch across console, mobile and PC versions of Pinball FX 2 and Zen Pinball 2 this summer. The table will "bring the story and choice-driven gameplay" of the game's first season to the pinball series, complete with original dialogue from The Walking Dead's cast. Zen Studios' undead pinball table will offer locations based on Telltale's first five episodes, including Clementine's treehouse, Everett's pharmacy and "down the tracks to the walker-infested streets of Savannah." As the game rolls on, players will need to choose who lives and who dies during a zombie attack, search for food and supplies and improve their group's morale, not unlike the decisions they were pressed with in The Walking Dead as well. Zen Studios issued a brief teaser trailer that shows series stars Clementine and Lee as well as the table itself. [Image: Zen Studios]

Listings for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Telltale Games' episodic adventure game series The Wolf Among Us have surfaced at multiple retailers in North America, strongly hinting at an upcoming retail release for the current crop of consoles. GameStop, GameFly, and Best Buy each list PS4 and Xbox One versions of The Wolf Among Us alongside series compilations for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. To date, Telltale Games has not announced a retail release for The Wolf Among Us for any platform. We've contacted Telltale for comment, and await a response. • The Wolf Among Us 'In Sheep's Clothing' review: Wild and woolly

    05.27.2014

This is a review of the fourth episode of The Wolf Among Us, and as such it contains spoilers for previous episodes. Doors are pretty symbolic things, when you think about it. Part of a structure, but not really of the structure, they separate different states of being as well as different rooms. You are one thing before you walk through a door, but something else entirely once you've passed its threshold. The events of The Wolf Among Us have been leading to the fourth episode, "In Sheep's Clothing," and this door, this single door, which Bigby has passed through alone. His passage marks the beginning of the end. The culmination that he, Snow, and the rest of the Fables have unknowingly been racing toward this entire time. The meeting was inevitable. The outcome is not.

  • The Wolf Among Us Episode 4 darkens the city next week

In touch with the ground, Bigby's on the hunt in the fourth episode of The Wolf Among Us next week. If you're hungry like Bigby, look out for "In Sheep's Clothing" on May 27 for PS3 (North America only), Windows PC and Mac, and then Xbox 360 on May 28 and iOS on May 29. Telltale says release details for the European PS3 release are forthcoming. As ever, the episode is $5 or you can get via various season passes on different platforms. Joystiq's Susan Arendt felt Episode 3 of The Wolf Among Us was, relative to the previous episodes' standards, acceptable if not fully satisfying. As she put it, the middle episode was a "good storytelling soldier, letting itself be bland and bleak so that the other chapters can shine." So hopefully things will kick on in the penultimate chapter of Telltale's whodunit. [Image: Telltale Games]

You can ignore the approaching horde for only so long – listings for The Walking Dead Game of the Year Edition on PS4 and Xbox One have popped up at online retailers over the past month or so, and recently the listings hit Amazon UK. This puts next-gen The Walking Dead Game of the Year Edition listings at GameFly, GameStop and Amazon. According to the Amazon description, the bundle includes the complete first season of Telltale's The Walking Dead, plus the 400 Days DLC and a download of the original soundtrack. GameStop lists it as $30, while Amazon UK puts it at £30. GameStop and GameFly note release dates of July 31, while Amazon has a release date of July 25. It's up for pre-order across the sites. We've reached out to Telltale for comment. The Walking Dead season one and 400 Days DLC both have big impacts on season two, which is currently in its third (and perhaps best) episode.
